Hi Hazel,

I don't know much about Annie except that she was a landlady of my boyfriend's grandparents, and gave them a very old photo album which contained quite a few old photographs of various people taken in Nottingham. I am not sure if they are her relatives. I have scanned in the photos, and they can be found here:
http://coffeecat.smugmug.com/Found-Photos/Miss-Caunts-Photo-...

Marja-Kristina

Hi , I don't know if this will reach you as it is a while since you posted this, but I am related to Annie Caunt (at least I have not yet been able to verify our Annie with Miss hemmings as yet. Do you have any other information about her? My maternal Grandfathers family are the Caunt side of my family (my mother, a Caunt, married a Winter so my maiden name is Winter) but Annie Caunt one of many children on my grandfathers family's side - my mother's father's side of the family. She is also known as Anne at times I have noticed. I have just tonight come across her as I only started researching this side of the family a few days ago. I myself was born in 1957, daughter of Cynthia Winter (Nee Caunt). My grandfather was Burley Francis Caunt of Nottingham, married to my grandmother, Dorothy May Whistance. Well enough for now..I was just so excited when I saw your photo..so now I will go and make sure of my information on Annie, and if you have anyhing further I would love to know!
best wishes, Hazel

I've got some old photos that were in a photo album that belonged to a Miss (or Mrs.?) Annie Caunt from Nottigham. She was in her 80s during 1950s, and lived with a Miss Hemmings. They rented out rooms to lodgers in/near Mapperley. In the attached photo, she is on the right, and wearing a black coat.

You probably do have relatives in Australia. Douglas Caunt who lives in Australia was just wonderfulin helping me trace my line, especially as it concerned Ben Caunt. The last known screen name I had for him was skegby@wanet.com.au
this was about three years ago. You could try e-mailing him. I believe he was fairly elderly when he wrote me, so whether this is a valid addy, I just don't know. Bqack in 2005He sent me quite a bit of information on the Caunt's at least back to Hanna Caunt who would have been Ben and William's granddmother. If you would like the rest of the info I have please send me your e-mail address. I am at Wldblume2@aol.com

I think there must be some connection as the names seem very familiar.

My Thomas GAUNT had daughters Sarah, Selina, Judith, Lucy and son Arthur. Selina went on to have Annie who married and became a WEBSTER and Amy (b. 1910) who married and became RIMMER. Judith m. MANLEY. Lucy m. ROBERTS. Arthur m. Gleason.Sarah m. first ROBINSON and then HORNE.

Since they often named children after people in their family the link between Selina, Anne and Amy seems quite a strong possibility for a link to me. Also we know that there was an Elizabeth, a Catherine and a Kitty (possibly the same Catherine's pet name) but we don't know the relationship or where they came in the family, these are just family names my relative remembered being mentioned. Maybe Thomas was James's brother? I will call again on my relative (daughter of Sarah ) to see if she remembers any married names or middle names etc.

Thanks for such a quick reply.
Regards Lynette

None of those names ring bells. The Caunts that I am researching did live in Jump at one time or another. I am researching James Caunt, born in 1835 in Calverton, Nottinghamshire, England who married Selina Lester, born in 1836 in Calverton as well. They married in Calverton and then moved to the Wombwell area. Their children that I know about so far are Ann, Catherine, Sarah, David, John, Hannah, Eliza and Amy. I am having problems tracing them past 1901, but if I find any connections I'll let you know.

I'm researching Caunts and mine were near to Wombwell at Hoyland, Jump and Rawmarsh but I haven't found out where they came from before that. Thomas Gaunt married Mary Ann Hague and in 1887 had their fifth child Lucy (who was Christened 'Gaunt' unlike her siblings) at Rawmarsh. Subsequently they lived in the Hoyland and Jump areas and later in Highgate near Goldthorpe. Do any of these ring bells.

My Grandmother was Emma Caunt Peters born in Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire. She came to the U.S. in the mid 1800's with her husband and I believe two of her children.
They settled in the Utica-Vernon area of NY State.

I have been inquiring into the Boxing Hall of Fame about having 'Big Ben' one of our favorite ancestors included. The International Boxing Hall of Fame is in Canastota, NY, 13032. Would be nice if others of the family lobbied for his inclusion also.
After all Bendigo Thompson, Jem Ward and Nat Langham are included and I believe Jem Ward was related to Ben.
Hope to hear from some relatives.
Kerry, Sorry I haven't gotten in touch with you earlier re the Caunt family. What information I have has been researched by Doug Caunt who is in Australia. It seems that
Benjamin Caunt the boxer was my Grandmother Emma Caunt Peters' Uncle. That I believe would make Ben and my ggrandfather brothers. Their father was Robert Caunt, b.1779, who was the base born child of Hannah Caunt and Samuel Butler.
This seems to be verified by the fact that Samuel paid for support of Robert ordered by the Court. Hannah was born in Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire on 6 Apr 1759. She married Richard Blackner/Blakener in 1790 and had another child, named Richard. If you would like further information you can contact me off line a Wldblume2@aol.com

I have fresh information regarding Rose Ellen Caunt my Great Great Grandmother. Her father was called John Caunt who was a carpenter according to her marriage certificate.I have still NOT connected any of these to Big Ben Caunt as yet.In the article you wrote about Ben you mentioned a Jeremiah Caunt. The thing I can't work out is who his father was.The only Jeremiah I can find was born in Skegby and his father was William.Big Ben did infact have a brother called William but another Caunt source is pretty sure he never married. Also I was wondering if Jeremiah had a brother called John who could be the connection to Ben I have been looking for.I really want to put this to bed once and for all so I can move on.

Chris Allum
