John M. Causley, Sr., 74, of Hessel, Michigan passed on unexpectedly at War Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, March 19, 2002. He was a veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States where he was released from active duty on November 6, 1951. He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church. Being a full-blooded Anishnabe, John dedicated years of service as a member of the Sault Ste Mariee Tribe of Chippewa Indians, as an active member of the Elderly Committee and had served on the Housing Commission. John was also an active Board of Director for the Mackinac Bands of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians. His leadership to all his family and friends will be missed immensely.

John's entire life evolved playing music which the sounds will never be forgotten. He loved his family and time spent together with his favorite pastime. He was the family's foundation. All could look to him in times of trouble or heartache. John loved golf and was the founder of the Native American Golf Tournament (N.A.G.T.) After 17 years, the tournament will be renamed and dedicated to his memory.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorriane (Perry) CAUSLEY on August 11, 1996; his mother, Mary Osogawin; and father, Perry Causley; two brothers, Wilfred and Joseph CAUSLEY of whom resided in Hessel.

John is survived by one brother, Raymond (Lorriane) CAUSLEY of Hessel; three sisters, Margaret Vasser of Cedarville, Catherine Lapointe of Sault Ste Mariee, and Ann CAUSLEY also of Sault Ste. Marie; six sons, John (Pat) CAUSLEY, James (Dorothy) CAUSLEY of Kinross, Jerry (Phyllis) CAUSLEY and Daryll CAUSLEY all of Sault Ste Mariee, Jeff CAUSLEY of Grand Rapids, and Donald CAUSLEY of Cedarville; and two daughters, Dalinda CAUSLEY of Hessel and Debra CAUSLEY of Sault Ste Mariee. John was a grandfather to 27 and a great-grandfather to 19; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. John was very much loved by all.

Visitation hours are Friday, March 22 from 3 until 5 p.m. and from 7 until 9 p.m. with Father Ted Brodeur officiating. Prayers will be at 8 p.m. at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is Saturday, March 23, 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Hessel with Father John Hascall officiating.
