Hi Grace, I've been searching for info on my mothers parents, Thomas James Cauthon (maybe James Thomas) and his wife Theresa DaMitz, of the Fort Scott, Ks. area. The state took their kids from them and at one time they were in the Goodlander home in Fort Scott, Ks. My mother, Geneva Elizabeth Cauthon-born in 1924, in Wheatland, Mo. Her brothers, Elmer and Elwood-twins, Roy, Willie. I suspect that I may be having problems due to the family break-up and/or some inaccurate information. Thanks for your educated reply to that message, but I am not a CAUTHON researcher.

My only interest in that Edith CAUTHON is for the PAGE connection and I stand by my original message on that score. I was not interested in the ancestry of the Edith who md. John PAGE....only in the PAGE connection as I do not have that family.

Suggest that you take all references to Cawthon in the St. Paul's Vestry Book and the references in the Douglas Register, and organize them chronologically and by name.

It looks like Thomas Cawthon died about 1743-47, and Christopher also disappears from the St. Paul's record in 1743. The first reference to a widow Cawthon is in 1763 when she appears to have died of a cancer. The gap of 15-20 years between these references suggests that this widow was the widow of another Cawthon. George becomes a suspect.

At the same time, there were three apparent orphans kept by various members of the parish.

Elizabeth was kept by John Tyler in 1763-64. She is not mentioned again and likely died or married.

John Tyler and Joseph Gentry Jr shared the keeping of George Cawthon in 1763-64 and 1764-65. The Douglas Register shows that George Cothan m. Diana Gentry 22 Mar 1761. These entries could mean that George the husband was ill and needed care, or that he died and his child George was kept by a Gentry relative.

Likewise, Eadith Cauthan m. John Page 31 Oct 1761. The Edith Cawthon cared for 1763-65 could not be the same person or she would have been Edith Page. This may reflect the same possibility with George. Edith could have been a daughter of George and Diana. She was cared for by George Gentry and the same John Tyler. Later she was ordered to be cared for by James Cawthon.

This suggests that Douglas's entries for Edith and George reflect siblings or close cousins, such that George named a daughter for Edith.

This is one way to explain these records. Given the absence of records because these are "burned counties," your search unfortunately is unlikely to get beyond speculation.

No.. I got out my info and my George C. Cothran married a Frances Cox in 1854 ....which is before your George C was born. Do you have any info on his family??

We have just hit a dead end with him and cannot find anything before him.

He was born in Tn and died in TX.

George C. Cawthon B. Jan 25, 1857 in LA.
Mar. Eugenia cummins, daughter of James Cummings and Mary Ann Moore on March 1, 1883 in West Carroll Parish, LA. Mar unknown aout 1905.
Died June 18, 1914 in LA.

Is this the same as your George C.?

Can you tell me some of the names of the George C. Cawthon family that you have? Do you have who he married??

We have a George C. Cawthon in our family and we even have a copy of the marriage certificate but have not been able to locate anyone by that name. We could only find a George W.

Who did your George marry??

Have any of you CAUTHON researchers who have been looking for the ancestry of the Eadith CAUTHON who md. John PAGE in Goochland Co., VA in 1761 know that there was an (evidently older) Edy CAUTHON (and others of that surname) mentioned in the Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish in neighboring Hanover Co. from 1763 to 1766 as being cared for by various persons.

Could this have been the mother of the Eadith who md. John PAGE (above)?????

I don't have the George C. Cawthon that you mentioned in Tennessee. This closest I have is a George C. Cawthon born in the 1850s in Louisiana. Sorry!

We have found most of the spellings you listed in our family history research also. Sometimes several spellings for the same person on the same document. We are looking for a George C. Cawthon - born in Wilson County TN in 1824..... married to Frances Cox. Do you have him in your family listings?

I joined the Cawthorne Family Site several years back and at that time thought my research would soon lead to England and that spelling of my family name of Cothern. Now my book of Cothern Clan is up to 1,000 pages with the indexes and I have the following spelling of the names of our line:
Cothern (731 people), Cauthon (703), Cawthon (424), Cauthron (115), Cothran (87), Cothren (56), Cawthorn (44), Cawthron (29) and Cothen, Cotheran, Cothon (2 each) and Cathon, Cathron, Caughthorn, Cauthan, Cauthorne, Cawthren, Cothorn, Cothram (1 each). So obviously Cawthorne IS NOT a good choice name for the site that I am in. It would be wonderful if all people with the various spellings of the name could be in ONE site so that information could be shared more readily. Any thought? Jean Rodwick

Dear Grace,
I haven't found a stich more on Carlotta Cauthon/Cawthon. She states she is from Appomattox, VA. Her first son, Hiram is born there. (looks like she ran home to mama when he was due) I haven't been to the records repository yet, but will soon. Need to track this lady down.

My Wm. r. Cauthon/Cawthon, etc. raised a family in Tenn. and went on to St. Clair Co. Mo. in the 1840s. The census of 1850 says he was born in Georgia. I know Georgia boundries were different then. I trying to find exactly where in Ga. he was born. I have searched many counties--including Franklin and nothing matches. Grace
