Family Name

I joined the Cawthorne Family Site several years back and at that time thought my research would soon lead to England and that spelling of my family name of Cothern. Now my book of Cothern Clan is up to 1,000 pages with the indexes and I have the following spelling of the names of our line:
Cothern (731 people), Cauthon (703), Cawthon (424), Cauthron (115), Cothran (87), Cothren (56), Cawthorn (44), Cawthron (29) and Cothen, Cotheran, Cothon (2 each) and Cathon, Cathron, Caughthorn, Cauthan, Cauthorne, Cawthren, Cothorn, Cothram (1 each). So obviously Cawthorne IS NOT a good choice name for the site that I am in. It would be wonderful if all people with the various spellings of the name could be in ONE site so that information could be shared more readily. Any thought? Jean Rodwick
Benjamin Franklin Cauthorn (c1827-c1865)

Searching for information on Lt. Benjamin Franklin Cauthorn, born about 1827 in Virginia. He was apparently a lawyer, and at a very young age was elected as the Clerk of the District Court of Ouachita Parish Louisiana, a position he held in 1850. In September of that year, he married Emily Bry, daughter of a very influential man in that region, Michael Henry Bry. Cauthorn lived in Monroe in the 1850s and 1860s.

Perhaps due to his official position, he did not join the Confederate Army in the early years of the war. Probably to escape the Yankee incursions into Monroe, he apparently went north to Union Parish. There at Farmerville, on 7 May 1864 he enlisted in Company F, 2nd Battalion Louisiana Heavy Artillery. He was elected as the 2nd lieutenant of that unit on 30 August 1864. He was stationed at Pineville and Natchitoches for the remainder of the war, but throughout this period he was detailed as the Acting Assistant Quartermaster of the Battalion.

Cauthorn was alive on 30 April 1865, but he apparently died soon afterwards.

Does anyone know his parents or anything else about him? His children all lived with their grandfather Michael Henry Bry in 1870, so Cauthorn's widow had also died by that time.

Tim Hudson

Dabney Cauthorn-Clark County, Virginia

I am working on the family of Dabney Cauthorn, born in Virginia-married to Catherine Lloyd. Most marriage records say her name was Caroline. Pieces of info I have found say her name was Catherine. I am a Lloyd just piecing together more Lloyd history. Info that says her name was Catherine are: 1838 letter written by Joseph Lloyd, great uncle of Catherine. In actual copy of letter, Joseph names her as Catherine, daughter of Stephen Lloyd and Sally Pingstaff.

1850 census from Clarke County, Virginia, records a Dabney Cauthorn - age 60-with wife Catherine-age 65-living at Cattleman's Ferry.

Death record from Clarke County
Source: Clarke County, Virginia Deaths 1853-96

Name: CATHARINE CANTHORN
Race: W
Sex: F
Death Date: 25 MAY 1853
Cause of Death: UNKNOWN
Age: Years: 70
Months:
Days:
Father's Name: STEPHEN LLOYD
Mother's Name: SARAH
Birthplace: FREDERICK CO., VA

The census and the death record also put into question her birth date which as been listed by researchers as 1795.

The marriage records from that period record her as Caroline. I would like to be as accurate as possible so if anyone can help, I would appreciate it. Mary Beth Marchant
