I have also found records in Peerage and Baronage books with some sort of grants as yearly as the late 15th century in Kirkcudbrightshire. In the mid' 16th century, there were at least 5 grants to a Mary Cavan there. Two in the town of Kirkcudbright.

I found a few articles about Kirkcudbrightshire. In the 12th century there was what was known as "The land of Cavens," or "The Land of Cavers," depending on which one you read.

By the 13th century, the Douglas' were land owners there.
Clan Douglas claims Cavan, Caven and/or Cavin as a sept.

In the early 13th century, the King of Scotland sent over 300, or more, Scottish warriors to France as "Guardians of the Court" as an alliance against England. Clan Douglas claims several of their Clansmen went.

I know someone who knows a Franciscan Monk named Cavin. He is from a monastery in New York State. He is presently doing work in the Andies mountains. This Monk claims several Cavan's also went to France in this alliance.

The monk claimed his family to have come from County Cavan, Ireland, to the "Colonies" 250 or so years ago. The farthest back any records in County Cavan go is the early 19th century.

Dublin and Kirkcudbrightshire are not that far from each other, so who knows. Either way the Cavan's of Scotland are Dalriad's, which means their ancestors came from Ireland.

Jamie Cavin
four750@msn.com
We have been to view the Kirkcudbright Cavan graves and to see Cavan park there.
My understanding is that there are records of land transfers in the Kirkcudbright area dating back to the 1400s. I think the family originated in Scotland and not Ireland,

Hi,

My father's mother was a Cavan. She (Margaret Frances) was born in Belfast, of the second marriage of Robert Cavan, to Margaret Wallace. Not certain of the first wife, but I think Elizabeth. The names that I believe are assosicated with the first marriage are John, Robert, Joseph, Ann Jane and Elizabeth.

Any connections?

Judith

My GGGG-Gpa, William is as far back as we can go. He received a land grant in the Tennessee territory, USA in the very early 1800's. He then appears on a census 10-15 years later, but it does not state where he was born. Several distant cousins have done allot of research, but hit a brick wall.
If you know your family to be from Belfast, start searching for the Parish's. They kept very good records for birth, death and marrage.
As I stated in my first post, the earlier I go back, I only find Cavan's in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. Since I will probably never know for certain where my William came from, I just want to know the origin and region of the name.
Jamie.

Thanks for answering from my posting in 2007! The Cavans are rather confusing, and I do have the Linwood census 1841 that you mentioned, but that is all, no further proof. I was researching for a friend who was very sick and has since died, she was related to Daniel Cavan- he married Catherine Gallacher/Gallagher in 1880 at Old Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire.

Looking for Irish Cavan/Caven as well. Noticed in 1841 census there was a Daniel & Mary Cavan and six children listed in Linwood Village. These might be yours.

I think there may be a connection - Samuel Cavan (my husband's GGG Grandad) was born in Kircudbright in 1794. He had a younger brother - John - born 1801 - who could be your William's father.
According to my records, the father of John, Smauel and their siblings was Samuel Cavan born 1760, who married Margaret Porter in 1790.
Let me know if this ties in with your records,
Jill

Cavan/Caven/Cavin origin

I have gone through all the Peerage and Baronage books I can find. There are five which are considered the most accurate. They list five different origins of the name. Kingship of O'Caubauin, (Ireland); Kingship of Keevan, (Ireland); from Kavanuagh, (Ireland); Northern France, meaning "the cave dweller;" and as a Sept of Clan Douglass from Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.
I found the earlist listings for land grants to Cavan's in Kirkcudbright. The oldest being eighty acres given to a Archibald Cavan in the 1480's.
I am trying to find a Franciscan Monk, living in the state New York, who's last name is Cavin. He claims that several Cavin's went to France in the 1220's, with about 300 other Scotsman, as an aliegence between the Kings, against England. I know the Scotish king did send about 350 warriors to France in 1221, (I think that's the correct year).
There are alot of Cavan/Caven/Cavin in Southeast Ireland. This area is very close to Southwest Scotland, Kirkcudbrightshire.
I do know the name has nothing to do with Co. Cavan, Ireland. My Father and I went there 4 years ago. Dating back to 1820, no one by the name of Cavan has ever lived/ died/married there. The word Cavan is the anglosized version of a gaelic word meaning "the hollow." The township was established in a very round valley, or hollow.
If anyone knows the "real" origin of the name, let us all know.

Jamie Cavin

Just hoping you may be able to give me a link to my ggg grandparents in Scotland, My gg grandfather' (Peter Cavan) according to information I have was born in 1812 in I t hink Kirkmaiden, Ayr, Dumfries Shire Scotland, and his parents were Peter Cavan (??Caven) and Elizabeth McKie.
MY gg grandfather emmigrated from Scotland to Australia arriving in 1841 but I have lost trace before Australia I cannot find him on any ship lists and cannot find his birth or parents.
I found a reference in the Morman lists but although the birth year was correct 1812, the surname was spelt differently, it was Caven.

I know this is a long shot but perhaps you have some knowledge that may help.

Regards

Carol Vella
