Well, I know there are certainly Carrolls in the Sligo area. I have been going through the LDS film and have seen that name frequently. The children of Margaret Cavanagh and Martin Nealon were mostly born in Easky, Sligo, Ireland. One child was born at sea on the way to the US. I don't think any were born in the US, but there may have been one.

Their children were:
William b. 1867
Belinda 1869
Catherine 1870
Margaret 1871
Mary 1872
Martin 1876
Sarah 1881
Michael 1882
Nellie 1883
Anna 1885

I think there was a Thomas too... born at sea in 1880.
Uh... take those dates with a big grain of salt... I did something wrong because all those kids came to the US in 1880, so couldn't have been born after 1880.... I did something wrong there. I might be off 10 years on all of them.

I'm tired just thinking about 11 kids over 18 years.... wow. Anyway, the only info I have on any of the children is that Belinda married a Carr. This family should be easily researchable through census records and probably the Lackawanna County genealogy website (sometimes can find marriage indexes).

If your Cavanaughs are from Sligo back to 1794, you're probably going to have a hard time finding a record for them. Parish records are extremely spotty for the 1800s, and I don't know if they even exist in that area in the 1700s. I'll keep my eye our for you though.

I hope some of that helps.

Lori

Hi,

I've been struggling with my branch of the Cavanaughs, and their origins in Ireland.

You haven't found a Timothy Cavanaugh in Sligo? Father, Patrick b. abt 1784 Ire.? Timothy had sons, Thomas b. 1848, Matthew b. 1851, and John b. 1855, all supposedly born in PA.

Also, if you do come across a Martin Carroll b. abt 1846 in Ire, father James, mother Mary. Then that would help, too. Martin, his parents and brothers are found in England census in 1861. I believe they went to Eng to escape the famine. Then in 1870-ish Martin travelled to Scranton. His wife, Mary Ann and their 4 children followed in 1872.

Unfortunately, Carroll is one of the most common surnames in Ireland. But Cavanaugh is less common.

I also have a Loretta A. Riebel b. 1902, marrying Joseph Nealon in Scranton. Loretta Riebel is the daughter of John B. Riebel and Loretta Carroll. Loretta Carroll is the 5th child of Martin and Mary Ann Carroll I mentioned above.

Did Margaret Cavanaugh and Martin Nealon have a son Joseph, or perhaps a grandson?

Regards,
Alix

Only 4 made it to adulthood. Their daughter, Theresa (Tessa, Teresa, Tessie) married Michael Cavanaugh. They lived in Scranton, PA.

I am researching Cavanaughs in Scranton. Your branch may have come earlier than mine, but some of the intermarriage names are the same. We may be related? Winifred Carden married James Cavanaugh of Kilglass Parish, Sligo, Ireland. Came over around 1869. James had a sister Margaret, who married Martin Nealon. There are lots of Carrolls in that area of Sligo as well (am currently searching the microfilms from Castleconnor, Kilglass, and Easky.)

If you find one who is willing to do the DNA test and it matches someone who knows their Irish heritage, it will be a giant step forward on your research. We have a good match with a gentleman who was born in Co. Mayo, so that's where I'm going to be doing research next.

Cavanaughs in Scranton PA

I'm researching the Cavanaughs in Scranton. Timothy Cavanaugh b. 1818 in Ireland can be found in the 1880 census with son John Cavanaugh b. about 1855 in PA, or VA, wife Catherine Curley Cavanaugh, b. 1857 in England, and John's children: James, Timothy, and John.

I believe that Timothy's father was Patrick, b about 1784 in Ireland, as I have found them in 1860 in Hyde Park area of Scranton. Along with Timothy's sons, Thomas, Matthew, and John.

Due to birthdates, etc, I believe they must have come US between 1818 and 1847, although I have not found them on any census before 1860.

John (b 1855) and Catherine Curley Cavanaugh's son John Leo(b. 1879) married Catherine Arnold. Their son John Francis, married Frances Riebel.

Other names in the family are Moran, Carroll, Burkhouse, Nealon, Hudak, Keenan. Most stayed in the Scranton area, but some moved to Baltimore.

I am trying to find out where in Ireland the Cavanaughs, Curleys, and Carrolls may have come from. Does any of this sound familiar?

Ellen Cody Cavanagh - West Troy/Cohoes, NY

Ellen Cody was born in Ireland in the late 1830s, possibly in Co. Kilkenny. She was a cousin of Margaret Lahy/Lahey Brennan, daughter of Michael Lahy and Mary Cody. James and Margaret Brennan lived in West Troy, now Watervliet, in the Port Schuyler area. Ellen's son John F., illegitimate, was born in 1858. Ellen married John Cavanaugh in the early 1860s and son John took his name. I don't know if he was the natural father. The family lived in Cohoes before 1865 and husband John, a Civil War veteran, died in the late 1860s. Husband John was the son of Denis and Catherine Cavenagh and that family lived in Cohoes prior to 1840. Other Cavanaughs and Laheys lived nearby. Ellen and son John remained in Cohoes until 1893, when John moved to New York City and Ellen returned to Watervliet to live with the Brennans again. I am not sure when her son returned, but it appears he ran a saloon in Watervliet until about 1914. Records are confusing because of the other Cavanaughs in the area. Ellen remained with James and Margaret Brennan until Margaret's death in 1910. She then lived with relatives Edward and Cecelia O'Brien Dignum in Menands. The notation in the 1913 City Directory said that Ellen was “removed”. It does not state where she went and does not say “died”. I have not been able to locate additional information or death certificates for Ellen or son John. Does anyone have any information on this family?

John Cavanaugh & Maggie Ryan, and their son, William b. 1825 Ireland

I'm looking for any information on William Cavanaugh, born in Ireland around 1825. He died May 1, 1898 in Allegan County, Michigan. He was Catholic, and buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Watson, Allegan, Michigan. I'm not sure when he arrived or where he was from, but his wife, Julia Kerwin, daughter of Lawrence Kerwin and Kit Marshall, arrived in 1851. She was born March 4, 1830 in Ireland. They were married in the United States in 1856 (according to a 1900 census record for Julia).

I also believe that he had a brother named Lawrence, and possibly a brother named Edward that died before having children.

His death record says that his parents' names were John Cavanaugh and Maggie Ryan.

A researcher in our line is planning a trip to Ireland this summer, and it would help to know where to begin looking.

Thanks,
Amanda

I have an old photo album that says:

JE Cananaugh
Terraville, SD
Nov 22nd, 1890

The first photo says on the bottom that it was taken in:
Grand Junction, Colorado

There lots of old photos in this album that do not have any names or information on them so I can't guarantee they all belong in this album, but some photos that do have names are listed as these people:

AJ Biggs
Ida Cotteral
Lola Dunham
Francis Paulsen
Edna Bissell
Dr. Moore
Hadie Allen

If any of these people sound familiar, I would be happy to get these photos to their families.

I no longer have an email address for Bill and the one that is on this site for Veronica was returned to me. I have found the copies of my great grandmother's pages from her bible. She was Margaret Cotter Cavanaugh. Would these be of use to you? Please let me know.
At a Cavanaugh/DeVriendt family reunion in 1985, we had only Betty, Joe and Gale listed as children of Glen, obviously an incomplete list. When was Gale born? How do you fit into Glen's family tree? Winifred, Helen, Madeline and Virginia were present at the gathering in 1985 as well as some of Russell's children. Was anyone from your line there? I have some early pictures of Lucy and Edward and a family storyline gleaned from the sisters over the years. You can email me at kko2637@hotmail.com. Looking forward to hearing more from you! Edward Cavanaugh's first son, Frank, was born on Nov. 1, 1882 and his mother, Maggie Branigan died Nov. 7, 1882. Edward later married Lucy Chapman and had 8 more children.

Steve, I'm not sure a DNA test on me would work very well. The last 'full-blooded' male Cavanaugh in my EXTENDED family line died in the late 1940's without issue, and I descend from my mother's mother who died in 1913 and who was the last 'full-blooded' Cavanaugh in my DIRECT line.
Her father came to America from 'Leitrim' in 1853 as a young boy, and all I know for sure about his parents are their names (Bernard and Ann McMahon Cavanaugh).
Bob Wilson
Beaufort SC USA

Yes, that is William Daniel's family. My father is William John b. 1894. Their marriage certificate shows Alexander and Isabel McDonald of Cape Breton as his parents and Katie McNeal daughter of Daniel McNeal and Catherine McKinnon of Cape Breton as his wife. They were married 20 Feb. 1887 at St. Ann's Church Gloucester Mass.
In addition to the children listed, they had another daughter Mary C. b.1892 and a son Vincent (a family name?) b.1901 who died later that year.
Hello.
My name is Juan Madrid. I used to be class mates with Corey at Caringbah De la Salle.I was deeply saddened when I found out about his passing. As kids, sometimes we would get along and sometimes not so well, however I wish I had the chance to have gone to his funeral to say a hearty goodbye, mate, for all the good times and the not so great as well. I couldn't help feeling sad at your comments as well. I know you will always have this void inside but I am sure that his spirit in in peace in a nice part of our father's eternal kingdom. Please send my regards to the twins that were 2 years below me at the time of High School and please wish them all the best. I don't often pray but tonight I will for him and his family.

I am looking for any information on William Cavanaugh born in Chicago, Illinois abt Feb 1868. His wifes name was Magdeline born about 1870 (looking for her last name).
Any information on her children:

Michael Cavanaugh born Oct 10, 1891
John Cavanaugh born abt 1890
Margaret Cavanaugh
Henry Cavanaugh

They were all born in Chicago, Illinois.

I found a 1900 Census with this information but nothing further.
