Oh, so much to update, but not sure it helps anybody or not. My gg grandfather, James Cavanaugh, died before PA kept good death records. I managed to get his sister's death record, and I finally got parent names: Michael Cavanagh and Bea (Bridget) Cawley. As it so happens, I had gone through all of Kilglass Parish records from County Sligo (microfilm #1279204) and wrote down all of the Cavanaghs, then grouped them by same parents. I HAD Michael and Bea. Horray!

1. Michael CAVANAGH
sp: Bridget CAWLEY (m.29 Oct 1837)
|-2. Mary CAVANAGH (a.1 Sep 1839-Kilglass Parish,County Sligo,Ireland)
Residence: Rathclo??ny
Sponsors: Michael Sheridan, Mary Cavanagh
Father's first name not readable on record, but think Mary belongs to this family.
Likely died young as has sibling of same name.
|-2. James CAVANAGH (a.4 Jun 1842-Kilglass Parish,County Sligo,Ireland)
Ireland, Sligo County, Kilglass Parish
Baptismal Sponsors: Bryan Cawly, Mary Finigan
Residence: Cav Town (likely Cavanagh's Town)
|-2.
Cavanaugh- from Co. Kilkenny to NYC 1849 on Brig Lydia

I'm researching my Cavanaughs - specifically the families of Thomas(Cavanagh)Cavanaugh b. abt. 1796 and William (Cavanagh) Cavanaugh b. abt. 1809 who may be brothers traveling to NYC from Dublin on Brig Lydia (some indexes list this as Lyura)arriving NYC on 26 Apr 1849. Thomas' family stayed in NYC for several years. Some of his 10? children went to San Francisco around 1866. I have researched Thomas' son Thomas b. 09 Jan 1840 Co. Kilkenny, Ire. m. Eliza Armstrong d. 19 Aug 1914 San Francisco, CA. He was the uncle or great uncle of my great grandfather Albert Edward Cavanaugh b. 1891 San Francisco, orphaned before 1900. Have been unable to find the name of Albert's parents. Some possibilities are the other sons of Thomas I-
Patrick- b. bet. 1834-1837, residing NYC 1860
William- b. abt. 1836
Michael- b. bet. 1845-1846, residing NYC 1860
Edward- b. abt. 1848, residing NYC 1860.
I have not been able to track these Cavanaughs after 1860. Any of these names in your tree? We spell our name Cavanaugh but have seen the name spelled Cavanagh, Kavanagh, Kavanaugh, Canvanah in various census, passenger lists.

One good place to look for ancestors who lived in the US in the 20th century is the Social Security Death Index. There are several good search sites (www.familysearch.org is free) and Ancestry.com has lots of info including the SSDI.

A quick search of the SSDI shows the following:

Name: Richard P.

I am just beginning my search for information about my family. My father was Richard Patrick Cavanaugh and as far as I know he lived most or all of life in Baltimore, Maryland. He was born in August and I believe int he 1930's. He died in 2005. He does have siblings, I believe that he has a sister named Nora. Does anyone think they might be searching the same line?

She was beloved by her sisters and brother, Catherine (Donald) Portolese, of Massena, N.Y., and the late Patricia Werner, of Rochester, N.Y., and Edward (Marjorie) Whalen, of Windsor, Calif. She was the niece of the late Irving W. and Catherine Wilson, of Pittsburgh, and the late Emily and Anne Whalen, of Massena, N.Y. Born in Oswego, N.Y., and raised in Massena, N.Y., Elizabeth earned her bachelor's degree in English from Buffalo's D'Youville College. After graduating in 1952, she took an interest in the work of her uncle, Irving Wilson, then president of Alcoa Aluminum, and began a career in personnel at the company's Massena operation and, later, at Alcoa in Philadelphia. She left the company to devote herself to raising her family. Always eager to share her love of the written word with her children and with others, she taught adults to read as part of the Literacy Volunteers of America, Nassau County, N.Y. In later life, from 1988 until 2001, Elizabeth was a peer counselor for the Older Adult Recovery Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. In that role, she found it most rewarding to address medical residents at the University of Michigan who were learning about the appropriate uses of medication in elderly patients. In addition to her siblings, children and grandchildren, Elizabeth is survived by 10 loving nieces and nephews and also leaves behind many dear friends, all of whom will remember her kindness, tenacity and courage. Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS INC., 4900 Centre Ave. at Devonshire Street . A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests donations to the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council or the National Office of the Sierra Club.
(Pennsylvania - Pittsburgh Tribune)

Thanks, Chris...Patrick Kavanagh tells me that you are one of his own family connectives to Leitrim. And at this point, I'm willing to settle on the possibility that my Bernard MAY have been from Newtowngore and may be the same man who married a Bridget Magohan in 1842 at the Carrigallen church. If that is so, then that same Bernard within the next couple of years may have remarried to an Ann McMahon by 1847, and his son Charles, my ggrandfather, may have been a child of that remarriage. That possibility has been suggested by Celia Boylan of "The Clan". In any case, the only "other" Bernard recorded in that era was at Carrick-on-Shannon, according to Pat. So IF "my" Bernard can be associated with EITHER one, two, or all of the Newtowngore, Drumnamore, Mohill, Carrigallen or Carrick locations, I'm willing to settle for that at this point...

there is a site called IRISHROOTS.IE. you can access BDM and Griffin Valuations, It Costs €5 to view a record, and keeps for 12 months, However some of the information can be missing such as the town land or the parents names, if it gives it only the father's name is on the marriage cert.
The churches for Drumnamore are Aughavas, and Cloone. Cloone is also the Civil parish covers Cloone and Aughavas,
Fenagh in a neighbouring church, Rowan Civil District also covers the area. the site is a hit and miss, you might get all the info you need on a cert then again you might just get a name. Like they say "BUYER BEWARE". Have you tried family labs.org, (the mormans). I got some info there, Mohil is the civil district that currently covers the area but Rowan can appear on a few occasions, and carrigallen.
Drumnamore is one of those places that borders a few civil areas, and reg might be done in the are athe mother came from, That is she might have gone to her mother to have the baby, or the man married in that area
You can contact me directly on dohertycp@eircom.net. if you need any other info or explanations
Chris
My greatgrandfather Charles Cavanaugh came over from somewhere in County Leitrim at age 7 in 1853 on the ship "Underwriter" to New York, and was traveling with slightly older siblings or cousins named Lawrence and James, and a younger sibling or cousin named Mary. All of them were under 16, and they were with a party of 20+ year old single men headed by a Robert Lavin. Charles went to New Windsor NY to work in the brickyards there when he came of age and married Mary Jane Gaffney in 1868. (Her parents were immigrants from the Aghanagh area of County Sligo, near the Roscommon town of Boyle.) I believe that Lawrence went to Syracuse and became a fireman. I don't know about James, but Mary may have been a spinster who lived out her life with her parents, Bernard Cavanaugh and Ann McMahon in Port Jefferson, Long Island, NY until at least 1880. It is possible that Bernard and Ann had come over at about the same time, but on another ship.
It seems to me that it's possible that this Cavanaugh group may have come out of the same place (Lisgillock, Lissagarvan, Cloone, in County Leitrim) as your Bridget, and it's further possible that she was a cousin to Charles.
Finding a specific location for Charles' Leitrim origin would be a wonderful family fact addition for me. Do you have any more info that would help?

Minnie was my great grandma, there was so many secrets to her parents and past, along with her first marriage (which she never divorced before her marriage to Mr. Bennett) to which my grandfather was conceived (inregard she had him take on Mr. Bennett's last name to keep the secrets going). I found her in a 1900 US Census for Atchison, Ks at age 14 as a border along with Lizzie Sample (who I think is her mother), Ava Prescott (who I think was her sister), under Levi & Elisha Bacon. It states that she and her father was born in Iowa, after researching I found out that her mother followed the railroad & had three daughter's with different men that were working the railroad at the time but that all or some of them had died. On another document I found that Minnie's parents names were Edward Cavanaugh (in a census it states he worked on the railroad, was from Ireland & died on 5/5/1890 in Belknap, Davis, Iowa; buried in Ottumwa, Iowa) and Elizabeth Stevens (no further info or haven't found her anywhere else). I have also researched the name Lizzie Sample but to no avail, I am trying to figure out the mystery so that I can find out who my grandfather's real dad is along with the history of Minnie's family but have ran into dead ends. Any help would be much appreciated! I have recently moved to Iowa but have had no luck on researching her here!

John Cavanaugh- Pennsylvania

Hello,

I was just looking for information on John Cavanaugh. My great-grandmother was Bridget Cavanaugh daughter of John and Mary Ann Healey Cavanaugh. I was told that John died in a train accident, but not sure when and where at. I am assuming before 1897 because Mary Ann Healey Cavanaugh then married Anthony Clifford. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it. Thanks

Tiff

Minnie Cavanaugh from Iowa

I am trying to find information on my great grandmother Minnie Mae "Cavanaugh" born in abt. 1886 in Iowa. The hard part is her life was "hush hush and don't tell" when it came to her past. I know she gave 3 different (maybe 4) as her maiden name: Samples, Cavanaugh, and McCaven is what she signed on her young son's death certificate and that she was born in Iowa. I know she has two sisters, she married a "Daily or Daley" then not divorcing married Lloyd Hollis Bennett Sr., she died in 1969 in Atchison, Kansas and is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery. The rest has been a mystery to our family for yrs. If you can help me email me at nickyhagen@live.com
Thank you!

Francis Patrick Cavanaugh / Maude Judge

Looking for descendants of Frank Patrick Cavanaugh, b 1884 in Minneapolis, MN and Maude Judge, b 1886 in Chicago, IL. Their children were Joanne, John Judge, Mary Lou, Virginia, Frances Maude and Albert. We are close cousins. My grandmother was Maude's sister, Mary Amelia Judge. My father's name is John Judge. The name was originally carried by the girl's father whom I know nothing about. I remember Maude from when I was a child. She traveled east to MA to visit her sister several times.
