Illegitimate Edward Cavendish Yates and mother Fanny Yates

I am trying to find out something about Fanny Yates, mother of Edward Cavendish Yates, my maternal great grandfather.

I have E.C.Yates's birth certificate: Born 1845; mother - Fanny Yates; no father; born at 6 Sherborne Street, St Marylebone, Middlesex.

Residents at this address in 1941 census are all of the surname Bundey (including one called Fanny but I don't think this is his mother). The 1951 census is unreadable for this address.

I can find no record of an Edward Cavendish Yates again until his marriage in 1873 to Priscilla Jane Mecham. I only have the record not the marriage certificate.

His eldest son is of exactly the same name but born in 1874.

There are a few Fanny Yates' (his mother's name) around at this time and I have various 'theories', but none that I can back up with hard evidence.

The family story goes that as a child Edward, whose later lifestyle was that of a gentleman, would watch his mother in a carriage on the way to the Epsom Derby from the Epsom College School gates. I can find no record that fits his dates at this school.

I would love any clues that anyone may have.

Viv Wilson

I am a descendant of Catharine Cavendish and
Hiram Skelton who married in Habersham Co. GA in 1821.
I have info on the children of this marriage. All lived in
GA, AL, and TX.
They named their first son William Moore Skelton (1822-1900)
I found on the AGBI a William Moore Cavendish on the
censuses in Pendleton SC. His birth listed as 1750. Wondering if this is Catharine's father.

Does anyone have info on these people?

Hello Jayne

I have just started researching the Cavendish family for a friend and have come across your posting.

I have found Henry Augustus Cavendish who married Eliza Newman in 1851. They had the following children:-
Richard 1852, Henry 1854, Arthur 1855, Edward 1857,George 1859, Minnie Mary 1860, James 1862, William 1866 and John 1869.

Henry Augustus was born in Southwark and Eliza in Newington. The children were born in various parts of London.

Do you have any further information? I got as far back as William Cavendish who married a Mary (parents of Henry John Cavendish b 1798) but that is as far as I have got.

I see you posted in Jun 2009, hopefully there may be some more info now.

Thank you

Stella

Wm. Cavendish was married three times and had children by the first two wives but not by Alice Mann, who was his third wife.
The 1st wife was Mary Nancy McCoy Williams, widow of Thomas Williams. She and her children had been captured by Indians and taken hostage. After her release they married. Don't know when she died, but he mnarried Jane Murphy 2/6/1794. Children born prior to his second marriage were Jane (b.1779, m. Joseph McClung); Andrew (b. 1787, m. Janet McClung); and Rebecca (b.1790,m. Alexander McClung). Children born to his second wife were William H. (b1794, m. Jane McCoy); and Mary (husband's 3rd grt. grandmother; family says she was called Polly; b. 1798, m. Isaac Callison).

Hello.
I am descended through Andrew Cavendish and his daughter Margaret Cavendish. I was unsure who his mother actually was. I thought that it was William's second wife. I have been to Fayette, County WV several times. I have read that Andrew is burried in the Crist Halsted Cemetery, but I have never found a marker. Do you have any more information regarding the Cavendish family? I am working on my DAR. I would appreciate any help that you are able to offer.
Sincerely, mjbohme

Gary, The McClung Genealogy written in 1904 mentioned that rebecca was related to Lord Cavendish of England. This should prove that she was related to WHC. WHC is the only Cavendish that I have located in Greenbrier Co., so he is the only one that could be the father of the children. WHC entered Greenbrier Co. in 1769-Augusta Co. Court Records. I have no other proof. No I do not have a copy of the will, but it is located in bath Co., Va. I would like to see proof of his first wife. The only hope about proof of his mother and sisters would probably be in Augusta Co. Court records. Keith
