You mentioned a bible with the name William Cavil and a date 1814 - I don't know if the following information might be relevant though it's a long long time since you originally posted your query!

On familysearch (the LDS) a William Cavel is shown christened 10 April 1773 Rotherham. His father was also called William Cavel.

His Batch No. is 7806835 which is the number which contains one of my great great grandmothers Ann Cavill born 25 March 1812 bap. 30 May 1812 Greasbrough (Rotherham), died 28 Sept. 1855.

I am related to William Cavill and Susanna Mell and there are still living many relatives in Canada.

Please reply for more information and feel free to search my profile.

William Ringham

This is a somewhat belated reply but I’ve only just begun researching Cavill. Ann Cavill born 25 Mar 1812 Greasbrouogh was my gt gt grandmother. Proving her parentage is difficult. She may have some connection with your line as I found John and Milcah Cavill next door to Joseph (born c. 1779 and Rebecca (born c. 1782) Cavill on the 1841 census for Brampton Bierlow – they MAY be Ann’s parents and therefore my G3 grandparents. I’m disabled and can’t travel to Rotherham to do research locally so everyhting has to be through the computer. Do you think we have any connection?

I wonder if this could be your Susan in 1861? Living in Stansted (no other address given), is the following household

Thomas Watson, Head, Wid. 79, Poor Person, Stansted
Fanny Cable, Daur. Wid. 52, Charwoman & Housekeeper, Stansted
Susan Cable, Gr.Daur. 8, Stanstead.

I have looked through all the Susans in Stansted and this is the only one anything like Cavill and a spoken Cavill can sound like Cable. There was also the death of a George Cavill reg. in B Stortford in Dec.1854, which could be her father. Her birth certificate will reveal if this is correct.

The birth of a Susan CAVIELL was registered in the Bishop Stortford district (which includes Stanstead), in the June Quarter 1853, Volume 3a, Page 153. A copy of the certificate will give you her parent's names, including Mother's maiden name.
In 1871 a Susan CAVILLE age 18, born Stanstead, was a Servant at Walkers Farm, Farnham, Essex. I haven't yet spotted her in 1861

I understand that there is little chance of you seeing this, as it is nearly 10 years since you posted! I am descended through Elizabeth Cavell, who was Walter's sister. Their parents were James Cavell (born 1839) and Elizabeth (born 1845). I have traced a further generation back to James's parents who were John Cavell (born 1809) and Milcah (born 1819). They were in the Wath area, in a place called West Melton, or Brampton. I believe they are buried in the churchyard there and I regularly visit home. The next time I go, I am intending to visit the churchyard and search for at least some birth and death dates of John and Milcah as I have hit a bit of a dead end. If there is any more infomation you would like, do drop me a message on here! I have only just started researching but I have a fair bit of info.

Hello!

As you can see, my mother's name is Blanche Cavill. She is the daughter of Cecil Archie Cavill and Winnifred Besant (Pembrokeshire). William Cavill came to Penally via Reading, and before that Somerset, where he left a wife, Elizabeth and their children. I have tracked this through census and other documents. His father was Henry Cavill born in Stoodley, Devon, and his grandfather was William Cavill Somerset.

Please feel free to get in touch.

Hi all,

After doing a lot of research on my family, I'm embarking on some research into the Cavill family who are related to my second cousin (she doesn't have the patience to search but wants to know about her family).

I'm looking for further info on William George? Cavill, born around 1910, married Lily (pronounced Ly-lee, I'm told)around 1931 or so, lived in the Mile End area of east London, and had children: William Frederick (1933), Maureen (1935?), Sylvia (1937?), and Roy (1939?). William and Lily divorced, and he remarried an Ellen. Lily remarried a Jim Davies.

The only other info I have is that William was apparently in the Scots Guard, played bagpipes. Does anyone have any possible links to this Cavill family? I'm starting from scratch with very basic info here, so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Kat

One of my great great grandmothers was Ann Cavill, born 1812 who married George Beeley in 1831. She was the daughter of a James Cavill and Rebecca. I know nothing of the family as I've not yet researched this line. However I thought it might be useful to make contact. Please let me know if your Cavills link up with mine or not. Thank you.

Hello Michael, I read your message about the Cavills with interest as I am descended from John and Milcah Cavill through their daughter Rebecca. Elizabeth Ann is buried in Brampton Bierlow Churchyard with her parents. She died 29/6/1870 at 14 years old. You are right in your assumption about Firth Lane it is know called Firth Road and is close to the Church.
Best wishes, Vivien Norton

G'day,
I was born in North Middlesex/London in 1938, and have lived in Western Australia since 1967. To date, I have traced my direct Cavill line back to the late 1400's in north-west Essex; where my Cavill ancestors lived until the late 1800's, before moving to North London. I am not an expert genealogist, but I am very experienced; and welcome all and any messages from my "kin" Cavills, wherever they may be.

Re: Walter Cavill and wife Dorathy/Dora from ENGL to PA

Could your Walter Cavill possibly be my great-great-uncle, born 1856 in Ellerton, Yorkshre, married to Dorothy Ann, born Loftus in Cleveland, North Yorkshire? Walter's family (father George, mother Sarah nee Brown [my gt gt grandmother], and 5 children) moved to Loftus between the 1861 and 1871 censuses. George is mentioned in an 1890 directory as a "clothier and emigration agent" having previously been referred to as a tailor.

In the 1881 census Walter (cabinet maker) & Dorothy (dressmaker) are living in Liverton, near Loftus (with no children), but they do not appear in the 1891 census.

If this could possibly be the same person as yours (and even if not), please let me know. And if there is any evidence of Walter's sister Miranda or Marinda coming with them, I'd be fascinated to know as my great-grandmother apparently used to talk of "Aunt Miranda who went to America".

Thanks!

Diana, England

Re: Thomas Torr Cavill

Hello Maureen

Here's what I've got on Thomas Tor at the moment - I can send you images of the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census returns if you like, but I'll need your email address, if you don't want to do that I'll transcribe them for you and post them here, jsut let me know. Here are the highlights:

Thomas was born in Upper Hollow Meadows, Sheffield around 1833. He was the eldest of 10 children.
He is listed with his parents for the 1851 and 1861 censuses then in 1871 he's suddenly a widower with 2 possible children and enumerated at the house of his brother Charles. In 1881 he has married Matilda and is living at house 2 court 2 Bramwell St, Sheffield with no sign of the possible children from his first marriage but with 2 children with Matilda. (incidentally, the daughter you mentioned
Alice Allott Frudd born about 1873

isn't mentioned on this census, could you confirm that she is Matilda's daughter please? then I'll add her into my records.

In the 1891 census the surname has changed to Cavell and they have 6 of their children living with them.

Interesting points:
1. can't find him in the 1901 census (yet!)
2. In the 1881 census and in later records that may be his children and grandchildren (still to check this out) the name has acquired a hyphen to become Tor-Cavell

I hope this is of interest to you.
In a bizarre coincidence, I've just received an email from a Judith enquiring about Matilda Frudd! I've directed her to the Frudd board and given her your name so you might get an email from her.

Best wishes
Amanda Cavell

I guess you'll have fund your info by now, but just in case: Thomas Torr was the brother of my gt gt gt grandfather, his parents were
Charles Cavill (b 1809 Sheffield) and
Ann (Hannah) Gibbons (b 1812 Oughtibridge)

Thomas was their eldest son, Matilda was his second wife, he had 2 children with his first wife and I know of 6 children with Matilda. He and Matilda lived in Sheffield and Thomas worked as a Table blade Forger.

It's been a bit tricky following him in the census returns... or would be if it wasn't for the Tor - his place of birth changed from Sheffield to Wales for 1881 and his name changed to CAVELL in 1891 - as it did for most of the family.

hope this is useful to someone!
