Dovie Talbot Cawthon's Mother was Lou Bolling Talbot from Buckingham Co Va. She married John "Jack" Talbot and moved to Nashville. Her sister Sallie married Addison Ford and moved to Nashville Also. Dovie married a Cawthon and lived in Mt. Juliett TN. I have tried to correspond with her kin there - but to no avail. They are buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville. They were also kin to a Baxendale in Nashville Bessie McCullogh Baxendale and Hatch Baxendale. PF

I am his illegitimate daughter. My mother was Willi Elizabeth (Betty) Gibbons, born about 1919, in Hillham, Overton County, Tennessee. I was born September 9, 1939, in one of the homes for unwed mothers in Nashville. My mother and I stayed there for about two years, my mother working and I pulling the babies' blankets off them--this I know because a nurse who worked there part time told my adoptive parents about me.

My adoptive uncle--Victor E. Gregory--was a Church of Christ preacher and he knew Rufus Vester Cawthon and he went to see him to tell him about me and asked him to have his son marry my mother. RV said no way; he had already had a daughter die of a botched abortion. This never comes up, understandably, in the on-line write-ups on the Mt. Juliet Church of Christ and the highly respected Cawthons.

So now: Brenda. Brenda is Rufus Talbot's daughter by his wife, Mildred Irene McDonald. That marriage did not work out at all well. Rufus and Mildred divorced, and Brenda went to live with an Aunt. Her mother went on and married several times more.

I'm going to put you on the list to have access to that whole file.

So--quick answer to your question: Dovie is my biological grandmother; Herbert--I don't think I knew about him--I'll check him out. I'm sure I didn't (don't) know about the Fords, and I want to get this off before I go look up Dovie better.

Hope this is not to jumble-y. [I need to go hunt for Brenda, too. She has pictures; she lives in Washington State--I'm sad to say I haven't kept up with her. She's very nice.] I've spent most of my time in the last couple of years working on my exhusband-children's father's files.

So happy to hear from you. I'll figure out how to get access for you to my Cawthon file.

Just went back through this and saw Bollings. I have a lot of the original Virginia/Scotland Bollings.

Here is my Cawthon line:
Matthew Talbot (1729 - 1812)

relationship to you [you here meaning the father of Rufus Vester] and the "labels" here are confusing but I'm leaving them in: 3rd great grandfather of wife of son

Thomas Talbot (1760 - 1812)
Son of Matthew

Thomas J Talbot ( - 1835)
Son of Thomas

John Boyd Talbot (1832 - 1913)
Son of Thomas J

John Howard Talbot (1861 - )
Son of John Boyd

Dovie Bolling Talbot (1884 - 1952)
Daughter of John Howard

Rufus Vester Cawthon (1880 - 1971)
Husband of Dovie Bolling

... kinda hard to follow here and Ancestry.com pedigree format is annoying to deal with.

So: persons of interest here for me are the Fords.

VERY HAPPY to find you, be found.

Alex

Hey, Patt! What a delightful--and daunting--surprise your entry is. I've had my nose to the grindstone on my children's father's original Dutch and Yankee genealogy for months (eons!), and only this morning felt I should check out my biological lines. I'm so thrilled to find your entry re Louisianna's line. I had chosen a direction that seemed possible, but--turns out--was incorrect. Yikes!

So thank you thank you for setting me straight on Dovie's line. Are you aware that Dovie also has a Black line? George Steptoe was George Washington's good friend who, though white in color was Black in pedigree. The Steptoe line shows up in Washington's brother's descendants--I'll have to hunt around in my all-over-the-place research there. There's a funny observation in one of the collections that ladies-of-that-era speculated that George Steptoe would turn Black when he became 16 years old. Like: Huh!?!

So, at the risk of sounding off-the-wall, I'll see if I can find what needs to be found to pull Dovie's amazing line together. Rufus is my father who was in bed (but not married) with/to my mother Willi(e) Elizabeth Gibbons, and he is Brenda's legal father by one of his wives.

This gets to resemble chasing one's tale (tail--little joke).

I'll try now to get straight on Lou and her sisters. Never had the slightest idea they were out there.

So happy!

Thank you so much.
Alex

P.S. Hope you followed me through that (hope I follwed me through that!).

Our spelling is Cawthon but so many could not read or write, there are many spellings but did all originate from Kentucky. There was a shooting of a woman and her lover (both lived) and part of the family headed to Arkansas. A Cawthon also hit a guy in the head with a rock in an election line and I believe that group moved to Fort Worth, TX. I may have those backwards. If you ask around Kentucky, you can probably hear about the shooting as people still remembered that when my Grand Parents went to Kentucky in the 70's. It was around the Cawthon Cemetary where you can see many spellings of the name. I will try to post a pic of the yoke later. Let my know if you find anyone who remembers stories about the shooting.

Yes, oh, Indeed! I would love to have more information, photos, observations, opinions, whatever. Rufus Cawthon is/was my biological father from a relationship he had with my mother, Willi Elizabeth (Betty) Gibbons. I'm about three years older than Brenda. I haven't been working on my biological line for ages--last post here-ish. My adoptive uncle was a Church of Christ preacher, so there are some interesting things that came from that. Better left unpublished.

Sorry to take so long to "return to the fold" here. My adoptive line is huge and my children's line (from my exhusband's enormous line).

Dabney E Cawthon's Civil war records

Hello all,

I was looking at Dabney E Cawthon's Civil war records on Footnote today. His name is spelled "Dabney E Cauthon" on these records. According to the records I found Dabney and his brother Eli (last name also spelled Cauthon in these records) enlisted on the same day, 23 December 1863 with the Thirteenth Kentucky Cavalry, Company M. One record says Dabney "joined for duty and enrolled Dec. 1, 1863 at Pulaski County, KY for a period of 1 year".

Both Dabney and Eli are present on the muster roll for January and February 1864, but listed as absent on March and April 1864 Company muster roll. The records say "absent without authority" and "next roll on file August 1864".

The Company muster roll for July and August 1864 under remarks says "Deserted August 14, 1864, with Ballard carbine and accoutrements. Value $40."

The next record for Dabney is dated Januray 10, 1865, Camp Nelson, KY and is a Co. Muster-our Roll. It says he was "last paid February 29, 1864. Am't for cloth'g in kind or manoney adv'd $35.45. Under remarks; "Deserted Aug.14/64. Due U S ! Carbine 20.00, 2 Carslings 1.90, 2 Cart. boxes 1.74, 2 swivels 1.76, 1 Bridle 4.60 = 30.00. Charged on roll Aug. 31/64." (Spelling may not be correct -- it is a little hard to read.)

Eli's record is similar to Dabney's.

There is also a record for Dabney from the Adjutant General's Office, War Department, Washington, Sept. 15, 1887 that says "There is no record of return from desertion or of dischrage."

Does anyone know the story behind this?

Kathy Vacek

Hello, I am helping a friend research her family roots. Her grandfather was also Clyde Vernon Cawthon. Her was Thelma Iona Cawthon.

I know this is an older post, and a lot of research has been done in the meantime. Someone has even put together a book about the Cawthon family. I am wondering if anyone has any documentation about Martin Bird Cawthon. Is there any proof that he was adopted, and that he was an Indian.

Thanks. Kathy

Martin Bird was Indian, his dad was Redbird and was murdered for unknown reasons. The Cawthon family took in Martin Bird and raised him. Either him or Dabney (think it was Dabney) moved to Mizzou to hide out from agents hunting indians to send to OK reservations, when all done, Dabney moved to Arkansas, I have his ox yoke in my garage that pulled his wagon to Arkansas (wife hates it) and his and her pictures (charcoal drawings/wife says they are creepy) at my home. Not sure this answered any of your questions. If you want a pic of the pics, just e-mail me.

It is our family cemetary on my father's side who just happens to be named James L. Cawthon. His father was Jasper Louis Cawthon and his father was Eli Cawthon. If you are related to us please let us know. I don't know if this matters but we are African-American. I also don't know if there is another James L in our history. Dineta

I am looking for information on James Cawthon (born in TN abt. 1810) and Betheny Cawthon (b.October 7, 1814 in TN and d. August 1880 in Dodd City, Fannin County, TX). Children were: William, James, Sarah, Mary and Samuel. Mary Cawthon (born about 1849) married Asa R. Lewellen on Sept. 6, 1863 in Stockton, Cedar County, Missouri. Asa R. and Mary (Cawthon) Lewellen had one child, Asa James Lewellen, born Oct. 7, 1864. Was this James Cawthon the "Colonel James Cawthorn" who fought and died in the battle of Oak Hill (Wilson's Creek)?
