If this is the Indian tribe my great-great-great grandmother came from it is Abenaki Indian. Her last name was CAYA too, her first name was Marie or Mary.

I think that Louise has good chance to be the daughter of Antoine (Anton) Caya (Cayo) and Ellen (Mary) O'Neil.
Antoine is the son of Joseph and Élisabeth Clair-Houde.
Ellen is the daughter of Michael and Mary Sheridan.
Records of Two Rivers Wisconsin are kept in Green Bay.

This is your cousin again. The Cayo surname is originally French beginning with a Thomas Cailleau born in France. His son Pierre my direct ancestor also born in France emigrated to Canada in 1641 and later changed the Cailleau to Caillia which many generations later became Caya then when my grandfather Ernest Patrick Caya came to the US he americanized it to Cayo. That is the version for my ancestry there are probably others ot there. Once again I'm willing to pass on any information to you and other Cayo relatives. I lost e-mail address, I noticed on this query that your ancestor was Oma Cayo. There is a gentelman that is doing some research on the Two Rivers Cayo. He does have Oma listed as the child of Anton and Mary O'Neil. It seems there were at least two or three Anton Cayo's in that area at the same time.(more then likely all related) Which has been very confusing, if you would like his e-mail. Dear Agnes, My great-great grandfather was Edward Cayo and he married Adeline Valley and their daughter Elizabeth (Lizzie) married Theodore Firme and they had my grandmother Adeline Firme who had my mother Lois McKenna and I'm Mary. I know hardly anything about the Cayo's I have photos and her french Catholic prayer book. We were all raised Catholic. I understand GGgrandfather Edward died of suspicious causes and had signed all his land over. I probably won't be much help to you because I just started trying to put the pieces together. Thanks for the message. You can email me directly at I can find out but at this point, I just beginning my research. Edward Cayo had a brother named Julius and he became the family patriarch. I know Edward Cayo had land in Marinette County and I was told they lived around Iron Mountain Michigan and Niagara Wisconsin. They were close with the Valley family of whom he married Adeline Valley. Edward died about 1902. His wife Adeline died two years prior to him of a burst appendix. They had ten children. Elizabeth Cayo had a sister Essie and Belle . Does this fit the Edward that you have? Let me know. Thanks

Did you ever find information on Agnes Cayo? I found an Agnes on the 1860 WI census of Manitowoc county. Listed is an Agnes, age 11 with parents Anton and Bor?ley (probably Basilica) Kyol with older brothers Joseph, Anton and Alexander as well as older sister, Erliza. All the Cayo/Caya's in 1860 census in Manitowoc county were spelled Kyol. Hope this helps you!

Ann, I have been working on the Cayo family tree for over a year. Louis Cayo ,born 1854 in Manitowoc rapids, Manitowoc County ,WI , married to Chlofield Payant is a sibling in the Cayo family that I am tracing. I don't have as many children as you have---Edward Alphonse is one person, etc. I would be glad to share with you all that I have. I have the line back to Louis's parents, but can't seem to go beyond that and make the jump to Canada. Contact me.
