I knew your grandfather and Velma too. I was so sorry to learn that he passed away. I had been to see him once after Velma died but couldnt find him but finally reached him by telephone. They were both such kind and helpful people and dearly loved their grandchildren. Does anyone have a family photo of the two of them that could be copied for me as I treasured their friendship. Thanks from karen jones Lamb. Henry Cayou was my father's uncle. I met him once at a pioneer picnic when I was small. My mom and dad use to tender with the boat Fearless and they also knew General Cayou out at Stuart Island in the early days of their marriage. Also Juanita Rouleau who recently died had told me how much she enjoyed teaching Chester at the school at Stuart Island. I was the one-room school teacher on Decatur from 1972-2006 but because I want to finish a book I am doing on Decatur History and because I am getting forgetful I decided to retire. I have really enjoyed meeting the Cayous. I also met Sallie Billy before she moved from her home at Sedro Woolley. Thanks for any communication. I am so proud of your family and mine too.
Karen

Joseph Cayou, St. Louis

I am not a Cayou relative, but I am researching the Second Catholic Cemetery in St. Louis and there was a man buried there named Joseph Cayou. He died on September 23rd, 1848 at age 32. He worked as a blacksmith and most likely died in the Cholera epidemic that reached it's peak in 1849.

I'd appreciate it if anyone had any information about this man.

Both of these I found in the St. Louis History museum's historical library, if you contact them they will probably fax you anything you want. The directory I mentioned also has his address listed, and the other book might tell you where to find his obituary.

If you find out anything about him, I'd be interested to know it.

John -

Thanks so much for the info. Do you have any info on their Indian heritage? I spoke to an uncle this weekend who says he remembers his Great Grandpa Ralph always coming over to dinner on Tuesday nights and said he was 1/2 Indian, yet no one seems to know any more than that. The only 2 people in the area who'd have info about Ralph are in the nursing home and are not of sound mind.

I came across some pictures of the Cayou's that my Grandma Beverly had in a tote? Also some of Cynthia Ellen Prichard. If you are interested, I will try to scan and post them or email them to you....I'm new on here, but can try to figure it out. I have one of Sylvester's family in front of their "sod" house.

He would be my Grandma's great grandpa. I've been told their is Indian in the Cayou family, but am extremely confused when I started researching because everything I find say they are French/Canadian. Can anyone shed light on this? Her Grandpa was Ralph Merle Cayou and great grandpa was Sylvester. That's as far as I've got. But, from here it looks like Louis Francois is Sylvester's dad. Any info provided would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS!

LOL!! I meant to say thank you for the offer of the excerpts! I have some pages of something from another researcher of Louis Cayou. It seems mainly about the Cayou family rather than native ladies. In any case, I'd love to see what you have proposed to send me. What a great thing to do - a biography of native women of that period - how interesting it must be - and the research also!

Thank you for your speedy response and for the excerpts from your book. I must explain that I am putting Louis and his family on my tree so that I can do parallel research on them as I research my ancestor as a favour to his descendant - they tend to be on the same sites. My great grandfather was Henry Bertrand Thompson who married a native lady, Allie (or Alie) from Kyuquot in BC. I'm not sure where they married. Henry Bertrand Thompson was the elder brother of Ernest Chester Thompson who married Elizabeth Cayou. Skip, the initial correspondent on this thread is descended from Ernest and I from Henry B.

I wonder if you have heard or read any mention of Henry B. Thompson and his wife Allie, daughter Lucy. They lived beside Ernest and Elizabeth in the 1890 and 1900 census, Orcas Is. I believe Louis lived near by as well. Henry and Allie eventually moved to BC. My mother was orphaned very young and her grandfather died also when she was very young. She was unaware she had any family left. I am trying to fill in some blanks for her - she is soon to be 90 years old.

If you wish, you may contact me at my e-mail address: wlslater@live.ca. Thank you, Lenore

In my Louisiana and French Canadian research I also found it means Little Pebble and has in history been spelled Caillioux. Sometimes it is spelled Cayeau. Good luck on your research.
from Karen Lamb

The info I had in my book about the 2 wives came mostly from Sherman Thompson who I consider very reliable. I had also heard from my father was that The first wife disappeared. He heard that from Henry's first wife or from Henry Cayou himself. My father was very close to his uncle Henry even when I was a girl as was my grandfather John T. Jones who owned some of Deer Harbor Canning. My grandfather was Henry's brother-in-law. I can photocopy from my book on that and mail it to you if you wish. My family loved the Cayous but I only knew Henry as an older man at Pioneer Picnics. I have tried for years to find the name of Louis' father.

1870 census has Louis b. approx. 1833
wife Mary Ann, b. 1850
1880 census has Louis b. approx. 1829
wife Mary Ann, b. 1840
1900 census has Louis b. approx. 1828
wife Mary, b. 1860
A bit of variation between each for Louis, yet all censuses were taken in June. Huge variations for Mary! I have been told that Louis had a 2nd wife called Mary but, still, the three birthdates over 3 decades differing up to 20 years? Could he have had three wives called Mary? Mary'S birthplace is listed in all 3 censuses as both British Columbia and Washington Territories - understandable as the land was being disputed between USA and Canada. Interesting, Louis is listed as white in two censuses but as half indian in the 1880 census. 1900 census lists no. of years married and states for Louis and Mary 35 years. I get a total of 11 children, birthdates ranging from 1864 to 1894 with variations in some individual dates of up to 4 years. Makes it hard to identify these individuals conclusively. The writing is all clear but don't trust the transcriptions, look at the images. I think the transcriber was 'tippling'! LOL! Can anyone shed light on this or add information or have you found documents?
Are you still watching this message board? My family also comes from Deer Harbor. My great grandfather was Henry Bertrand Thompson from Maine. He married a Kyuquot (BC Canada) native lady called Allie or Alie. They had a daughter, Lucy, born in Deer Harbor. in 1901 they moved from Deer Harbor to British Columbia. If your family knows stories, I would be interested if they know of these three people. I am also in touch with Skip who seems to have started this thread and has not shown up in the messages since. He is related to the Cayous. I am related to him as his great grandfather Ernest Chester Thompson was brothers to my great grandfather. Please contact me regarding this history.

My grandfather is very healthy and knows much of the family history since he grew up on the SanJuan Is. Louis Cayou's wife was Mary Anne Cayou and she was buried in Duncan B.C. after a tragic drowning. My grandfather is 84yrs old and is quite unique, he is a very traditional Indian man.
I have written a collection of 10 Native American women biographies and I know directly from Sherman Thompson, a great-grandson of Louis about Louis' 2 wives, the first gone very early but it is still difficult to prove whether louis is from KY or LA or even Tn due to wide opionions of descendants and sources such as "Orcas, Gem of the San Juans" by Fred Splitstone, published very early and other census comments by descendants. Thank you for trying to help. I just always wanted to find an official source that proves where exactly Louis is from. My fathers great aunt Mary Reed was married to his eldest son ,Henry and they lived here and at Deer Harbor too. Thanks again.

I love your grandparents if they are chester and velma. I think Louis Cayou was born in Kentucky or Louisiana in about 1833. Does that seem correct to you? My father's aunt Mary Reed of Decatur Island was Henry Cayou's first wife before he married Mrs. boddington. I guess we are shirttail relatives.
Thanks from Karen Jones Lamb

Helen Johnson,
Please e-mail me directly at sylchet@netzero.net.
John F. Cailloux, my great uncle had 2 siblings, but they were 1/2 sisters ( one of whom was my grandmother) and they had different last names. Vinton, LA is on the western edge of LA near Orange, Texas ( and near Lake Charles, LA).
When we can communicate directly, I can share more. I too am looking for Uncle Johnny's father as he would have been my great grandmother's 2nd husband. I have a couple ways of continuing the search. We'll keep in touch, OK? Sylvia

Hello Sylvia:

Thank you for the reply. During my years of research, I have come across the name John Cailloux and the reference to Vinton, LA. Where is Vinton?
I also know that there were other Cailloux's in Texas but have not been able to find information that would connect the families. Since John F. Cailloux was born ca. 1899, my interest would be in his parent's or grandparent's names; would even settle for names of his siblings.
I'd appreciate any information you share; I have not found very much on this ancestral line.

Regards,
Helen

My great grandmother married a Cailloux and had one son, John Ferdinand born 7/11/1889 near Vinton, LA. There are descendants from my Uncle Johnny that I can share. I am looking for his father's name. My great grandmother was Lucy Ann Spencer, born 5/5/1858 in Vernon Parish, LA, died 6/4/1954 in Tulsa, OK. You can also e-mail me at:sylchet@netzero.net Thanks!

My great, great, grandma was Adeline Cayou. She was born to Louis and Mary Anne Cayou in 1872. I know she married Sam Penter and that they had a large family, including my great grandfather Cleve Penter, but I don't know a whole lot of history. It would be great to get any new information I can. I look forward to hearing from you again soon. Dana
