Hello. I am trying to do some research for a friend (co-worker) of mine. I've been able to find some information on census records, etc. and am trying to include some pictures for her as I find them. She would really be thrilled if I could surprise her with a picture of Walter, Purnie or any of the others.
I would really appreciate any help. I told her I would try to find something this weekend. I was in hopes of giving her a pretty good start by Christmas. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Thanks in advance for any help.
I have not ck'd into this sight for awhile. I just came across your note. I am in a query as to the connection. Must be cousins????

My Mother was a Cayton, born in Lewis Co. Her great-grandparents were Doshia & Benjamin Cayton. Now, the connection that you have may be with Benjamin, maybe?

Do you still reside in the area? My Mother and her syblings have all passed away now, as they left the area in the 1940's.

As a child, I visited the area many times. I met several of my Mother's childhood friends and the area was like a second home to me.

That's ok, tt's easy to get confused. I would still like to receive the pics you have of Thomas and family. My Dad or one of his sisters might be able to identify the people that you can't. Do you have a pic of Anne Hazelwood Caton? One of my aunts has a photo that she thinks is Anne holding Purnie and Samuel Bernie (they were twins) when they were babies. No-one is sure, but if you have a pic of her we can compare.

Betty

I'm so sorry, I should really look at my notes before I start babbling rather than after. Jim B Cayton son of Alice Cayton signed Vinnie Cayton Brown's funeral book and a relative told me he lived near her.

Your Purnie was the little sister and marred into the Siddle family. I got the sisters confused. Jim would have been before your time.

That's interesting. Purnie was aware of her half siblings. One of her brothers by Alice lived near her and attended her funeral. Families are wonderfully complicated arent they?

Ruby Burkham Cayton had two daughters by Oscer Dee Cayton. They were Mary Ann Cayton and Billie Ruth Cayton. Billie Ruth married Hubert Glenn Hargrave, they had two sons and a daughter. They were Donald Glenn Hargrave, Robert Joe Hargrave and Judy Diane Hargrave. Judy married me. I am Kevin Carroll Evans.

Give me an e-mail and I'll send you some pictures. I have one of William Thomas Cayton that only has half the group identified. You would do me a great service if you could identify some of them.

Kevin

Unfortunately I don't. William and Anne are my gggrandparents and I know very little about them. Purnie was 16 when she married Walter Siddle, who was 20 years her senior. I wasn't even aware that William remarried and had several childen from a 2nd marriage until rescently. Wish I had become interested in family history before Purnie died.
The only child I show for Dee Cayton is Mary Ann, is this your wife's line? That is where my info on Dee's line ends. I'm willing to share what I have.

I have none...but, I think somewhere as a kid...I saw one of him. Now, I do have one of Mom's Dad, Newton. It will take me a few days to get it out..and push it over to you.

Ck out listings for Weston, WV and surrounding areas and see if you can contact any Caytons in the area, that might be able to assist you.

You might (?) be able to look into old school albums..I have no idea of what is available to be seen. I know several years ago, I tried connecting through Mom's old high school for her...but, nothing happened.

I have made contact over the years, with people that my Mom knew as a kid...but, that is all in the past, too.

I know you feel the hole....and would like to fix it. Is your Mom able to give you any idea of where Donald was from? Did he mention a large family?

Have you looked at the sight that I made up for "Cayton"...there is a listing of a lot of the relatives going back on the Cayton side in Lewis Co.

Best luck...Sue

Dear TomBarker63,

My Mother had a 1/2 brother named Donald. He did live in the Weston, WV area for awhile. I only remember my Mom mentioning him, when I was a kid.

Your timeframe age-wise could have been a point, I do not know how old he was then? Other than the fact that five kids were born first, before my Mother's Dad walked away and had more children with Mary.

The second family lived in the Weston area, as well as Arizona. Donald from memory was thin and tall with brown hair. That is all that I can tell you.

You might want to pull records from Lewis Co., WV and do a search. Donald's syblings included: Maurice, Frances, Sue and another child, I think. The father was Newton and the mother was Mary.

Good luck.

Hi! I have a CD with lots of info for VA & Maryland but haven't had time (too busy teaching) to check it out. I hope to do so soon. I have a census report that shows Ruhama as a widow receiving a civil war pension and I can send you a copy. I have where David was a member of the WV 115th out of Wheeling and once I found where he was buried outside of Weston, WV. I didn't keep that record so now I am looking again. My mother says "all the Caytons" are buried here so I should find records this summer. You can e-mail me direct if you wish: jbc2007@curtisbrooks.com

Hi Julane: I'm also a GGGrandson of Ruhama and David's. Only out of David Lloyd line. Ruhama's mother was Sarah Sally Fisher 1803-1875. In 1870 Ruhama lived in Jane Lew, Lewis Co. and David was a stage coach driver. I have not been able to find a record of David's death. I know that it was before 1890, as Ruhama tried to collect on his Civil War Pension at that time. Ruhama died in Weston on 3 Sep. 1896. Have you been able to trace David's father John Caton born in Maryland?
I hope this helps.

Bob Cayton
tigertom099

Cayton- W.VA.

Unless there are a "bunch" of Caytons from different lands...I am assuming in that small town..everyone is connected somehow. I just know of my Mom's "group". With the research that I did, I was able to go back quite a ways as you can see.

I know that my Mother tried years ago to pull what she could for a book that she was writing, that she called: Clarissa. Now, I know for sure as to where the name came from in the family.

My cousins born there are "Hammers". I was friends with Debbie Garton and Vicky Tucker when I was a kid...now, we are all old.

In coming back to Weston to visit with Mama Cayton (Doshia), I met a lot of my Mom's friends and subsequently their daughters. It was a wonderful time...and I do regret not having ever had the chance to meet the "elders" of Mom's memories.

There seems to be a LOT of Caytons in WV. Probably more descedendants of my Mother, Norma Cayton's father: Newton H. Cayton.

Newton was married to Bertha Robinson, in Weston. They had five children. He left Bertha and soon thereafter she passed away leaving the children to reside between the grandparents.

Newton went on to have more children with Mary. I know some of the names as to being Frances, Donald, Sue, Maurice and ?.

Does that sound familiar to you?

Sue

I am the great granddaughter of a Cora Belle Cayton who was born in 1868 in St. Louis. Her father (Frank Marion Cayton, a river boat pilot) had an older sister, Martha Jane, who married Milton J. Reed in Gallatin Co., IL in 1844. She and her two children lived with her mother, Catherine Cayton, in Shawneetown in 1850 per the census. Given your information, these two Cora Belle Caytons are not the same person, but perhaps that is where the confusion and Reed connection came from...

If you know anything of my Caytons, I'd love to hear from you.

Hey Julane; Sorry it took so long for me to reply. David and Ruhama are my GG Grandparents. MY G Grandfather was David LLoyd and Dove Burrough Cayton. My grandfather was Howe Claude Cayton.
David Cayton,1 Jan. 1833, and Ruhama Lough only had 2 children that I have found. David Lloyd and William H.
William H. was married to Rosa Bird Starkey. I have 7 children listed for them. You will have to watch the information you see on William H.Cayton, there were 2 in Lewis Co. and a lot of people on ancestry have them mixed up.
David's father John A Cayton was born in Maryland and married Sara Harmiston, 4 Mar.1825. They had 7 Children.
If you would like to correspond by e-mail, I'll be happy to send you more information.
Hope this helped.
Bob Cayton
tigertom099@aol.com
