Good Morning!

I received a notice that you had posted a query about Joseph and Anna Cerny and just wanted to let you know that they are not the same people I have been researching. The Joseph I have been looking for was born in Moravia in 1892 and emigrated in 1913. He was a tailor by trade. In 1919 he married Anna Scharmann, and they had a son, Joseph Jr. in 1920. They resided in LaGrange, Illinois.

As you may know, Cerny is one of the most common Czechoslovakian surnames, so there are a lot of them out there. Good luck in your search!

Sincerely,

Mary Christensson

I just was playing around tonight on the computer with the family name and I came across this site. My Great Grandfather's wife's name was Cerny and my Great Grandfather was a Bracha. My Grandfather was Steven Bracha who was a child of Jan Bracha who first wife was a Cerny so I guess in some way we are related.
This is a long shot, after so many years, and I hope that you (or someone!) will respond. I am looking for information on Joseph and Anna (Scharmann) Cerny, and their son, Joseph. Joseph, Sr. came to the U.S. in about 1912 and was a tailor; he married Anna in 1919, and Joseph, Jr. was born in May of 1920. They lived in La Grange, and apparently remained there until Joseph, Sr. died in 1973. The SS death index indicates that Joseph, Jr. died in September, 1977, but does not give a place of death.

To the best of our knowledge, Anna was my husband's aunt, and we want to substantiate this, and find descendants, if any.

Anna and Joseph Cerny

Seeking information on Joseph and Anna (Scharmann) Cerny. Joseph was a tailor by profession from Holosovice, Moravia, who came to Chicago and later lived in La Grange, Illinois. He married Anna Scharmann in January, 1919, and the couple had a son named Joseph in May of 1920. He became a naturalized citizen in 1938. WWII draft registration in 1942 indicates that both Joseph, Sr, and Anna were still alive and residing on 56th S. in La Grange. SS death index shows that Joseph died in November, 1973 in La Grange, Illinois.

PLEASE respond if you have any information.

I'm looking for a branch of the Cerny family that would have arrived in Missouri probably in the 1840s, and moved on to possibly Illinois, or the Pittsburgh area, by about 1870. The Anna I'm looking for (gggrandmother)eventually married a Thomas Janda in Allegheny City, PA in the early 1870s, and died in about 1883 leaving a son.

I've been combing St. Louis' Ward 2 (around St. John Nepomuk Church) and Racine, WI areas, but no luck finding a likely Anna. Any help would be appreciated!

Anna and George Cerny

Am looking for information on Anna and George Cerny, who lived in Chicago in the early 1920s. Anna Sarman came over to US in 1916mand married George Cerny. They lived on Turner Avenue and in 1921 two more of Anna's sisters, maria and Ludmila came over. Ludmila ultimately became my husband's mother. She said that she had a feud with her sister and there was never any contact between them. We are trying to find any descendants of either Anna or Maria.

Thank you very much. I am obviously new to this and I appreciate all your help and guidance. :) I am not the one who posted prior. I did post to them and hopefully will here from them also.

I will check out the 1900 census because it does look like it might be a lead. I do have them listed as immigrating in 1888. His name is Charles and his wife is Christina. I have no Frank as a brother, but a sister born that year named Francis. Edda could be Edward, my grandfather. He was born the same year in Illinois. As for Esberta, I know my grandfather has a sister born that year but they called her Betty.

I have just started to search the last few months and am hoping to find a lot more information.

Thank you again for all of your help. If you find anything else that might be helpful to me please let me know. I appreciate all the help I can get.

I have added much on my Anna Cerny line in the last few years due to some great distant cousins surfacing with information. As stated before, I understand that Cerny is a very common Bohemian name and thus at this point find no connection between our lines. Nonetheless, that is not to say they may be related somewhere in the distant past.

As I refresh myself on your original posting of years ago, I believe the 1920 and 1930 census records were all you could basically go on. A quick search finds that the "LC" on the mother tongue listing probably means "language of custom or country", although that still is somewhat vague.

On a quick search again of your line, I come up blank for 1910, but am wondering if you have discounted the 1900 census listing that is a close match? I have found census records to vary widely with spellings, dates, etc, but to be for the same family. See what you think:

1900 Federal Census Series T623,Roll 282, p.86
Town of Lake, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois

CERNY, Chas. 35, Jan. 1865, Boh Ger Ger, imm. 1888, occu?
Christa, 27, Sept. 1872, Boh Boh Boh, imm. 1889(?)
Frank, 4, Sept 1895, IL
Mary, 3, Jan. 1897, IL
Edda (Eddie?), 2, Mar 1898 IL
Esberta (Elberta?), 6 mos, Mar 1900

1900 census lists them married 6 years- have tried various spelling on Il Marriage Index for that time period with no luck. This may give you further clue along with 1888 immigration to find the naturalization papers, but 1900 census states PA which usually means papers pending or 1st papers applied for- have to wait 5 years after arrival for paper process to start was my understanding.

Be patient and don't give up the search. Mine have taken years to get a crumb sometimes, but worth the wait. Good luck. Perhaps others in your line will surface out there and help fill in some blanks.

Thank you for the information. I have started the search because these are my great great grandparents. So far all I can find on them are from the 1920 and 1930 census. Do you know what lc stands for on the language section in the census?

I hope you have been successful in your search.

Is anyone out there researching Cerny in St. Louis between 1850 and 1930? Looking for family of Anna Cerny Ferris (husband Richard Ferris) born 18 Sep 1883, Missouri, died 27 Feb 1958 in St. Louis. She is buried at Gatewood Gardens/New Picker Cem in St. Louis in lot with Frank Cerny 1856-1898, and Anna Cerny Heilmann (nee Strosta) 1859- 1936 whom I believe to be her parents. Also in same lot is Emma Venegoni, whom I believe to be her sister who was first married to George Amstutz. Anna and Emma Cerny also had a sister named Celie and a brother Frank.

Would love to compare notes with others researching Cerny in St. Louis.

I wrote this family down because of the name Cerny....as I remember My grandfather saying this name. I will have to ask him agian. My family is the Kacin family that lived next door to the Cerny's at this time. They came from Hryzely, Bohemia, Klatovy, Czechoslovakia and the other family related to the other Hamerniks came from: Village of Pusta Rybna, near Policka, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia.

Some how I bet we could put the families together and find how everyone is related. I am sorry I do not have any information on the decendents of this family.

I used to live on a farm near one of the Pistulka families (they would go through our farmyard to get to one of their pastures). I have quite a bit of data on the Fairfax Pistulka's if you are interested. Dewey was a classmate of mine - I just learned he drowned a few years ago.

I found a Cerny family listed in the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church records. It says that Frank Cerny b. 2 May 1893, Clara Cerny (nee Layton)b. 12 Aug 1899, Earl Cerny b. 10 June 1918, Elaine Cerny b. 19 Dec 1920, and Donald Cerny b. 30 May 1923 all drowned on Easter Sunday evening April 5th, 1931.
The family was buried on April 10, 1931 in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
I am not related, but I thought the information might be helpful to other Cerny family members.

Thanks for the information.I had found a picture of the grave on the internet.I think if we find any Shimbersky's that they will be related.I belong to the Czech Society here in Minnesota and they said, that because of the year that they immigrated that they
would have been some of the earliest to come to America.
I wrote down your e-mail and will sent you anything that I might come up with.I feel that after my Gr Uncles died that the name here died with them.

Thank you much for the obituary. I'm glad to know the correct name for Frank's wife, Philomena.

The first wife of my great-grandfather (Joseph Slanina) was named Mary Magdalena Simbersky (Shimbersky). They were married in Bohemia and immigrated with their daughter Mary in 1854. They first settled in Jefferson Township, Johnson County, Iowa. Some old correspondence from one of their granddaughters says that a cousin of her grandmother lived about 2 miles from them in Johnson County. For quite some time, I've assumed that this is Frank Shimbersky's father, Joseph. Mary Magdalena died in 1865 and Joseph Slanina remarried shortly thereafter - I am descended from this second marriage.

The origins of my Ggf were a mystery for several years. I know now that he was born in Deutsch Rybna, Bohemia (now Rybna nad Zdobnici in the Czech Republic). However, I have not found a record of his marriage to Mary Magdalena, so I still don't know where she was from (not Deutsch Rybna - checked there already). It would be nice to find out where all these Simberskys came from.
Hi Sandra,

Nice to hear from you after all this time. I've been poking around and found a few clues since my message of two years ago. It appears that the Shimbersky (Simbersky) family moved around quite a bit. From the Federal census, I think that they lived in Republic County, KS (1880), Jackson County, MN (1900), and Eau Claire County, WI (1910). Probably passed through Nebraska too. The children were born in Iowa (Frank Jr., Wenzel, Edward, Mary), Nebraska (Ludwig, Lena), Kansas (Emma), and Minnesota (Ella, Clara).

It's possible that this is their marriage record:
IOWA MARRIAGES, 1851-1900
Name Spouse Marriage Date County State
FRANK SHIMBROSKY /WINNIE CHIMEY 28 Jan 1871 Johnson IA

I've seen "Winnie" also referred to as "Minnie". Perhaps the correct name was Wilhelmine and these were nicknames.

I'd love to see your Ggf's obituary. Could you please post it to the board here or send me a copy? Thanks!
Re: Charles or Karl Cerny (Chicago)

Don't know if you are still searching since your post is a little dated. I believe I find your people on the 1920 and 1930 Chicago census. If you don't have that info, would be glad to send what I can read of it.

As far as your family story, so glad most of us have such interesting stories handled down- usually they are based in some fact, but sometimes deadends prevail. I suspect the Karl is Karel. Yours looks like he immigrated in 1888, so too early for the Ellis Island Records. I continue my search for Anna Cerny records and have made some headway, mostly due to Ellis Island Records. Such a common name.

Good luck in your searches.

MY Anna Cerny was born Oct. 28, 1888 in Prague. Such a common name. I have made some brief headway on her side, mainly due to info on the Ellis Island site.

I find what I believe is your family on the 1930 Chicago census. However, I also find a huge, wonderful tree on the Ancestry Family Tree site for Anna Marie Cerny/Bouskova that looks like your quarry.. Perhaps this is your own info that you found since your original postings? If not, you should be ecstatic to find someone with all that info. Good luck in your searches.
