I am starting to search again and felt that you might lead me the correct direction. I was told I had a grandfather that died in the 1916-1920 around that time. His last name was cervany. By any chance you would know any cervanys in oklahoma doing research. He died when my mom was young. my grandmother remarried a cofer, her maiden name was Hejna. My mom passed away when I was young, seem like every one has passed away so I am running into a brick wall. I almost given up thinking he did exist, but found a census saying that my mom Beulah and her sister Blanche had the cerveny last name. Mom grew up in Crescent, OKlahoma. Somewhere in Oklahoma this man existed. So any help would be appreciated.

Elsie Cerveny (old proper pronunciation for this name is Ched-veny) is the daughter of John and Mary (maiden name Dvorak) Cerveny. Elsie Cerveny married a man named Mr. Harry Turner. Nick name T. They resided in the Mckinley park district area of Chicago. They had Rosemary, Beatrice, Dorothy, Sonny, Mary, and Sylvia. Aunt Elsie was known as Aunt L. Elsie had many brothers and sisters. Mamie, Blanche, Emma, Lillian, Josephine, Charles, James and John. Ancestors and Heritige back to the foothills of the Carpathian mountains. The Cerveny castle, that is now known as the Cerveny-Kamen castle. Royalty of old Europe. John L Cerveny (Elsie's brother) is my grandfather. He died in 1969 at 52 years old. He is buried at Bohemian National cemetary in Chicago, with my grandmother Mildred (maiden name Gniadek) Cerveny beside him. Every year on his birthday June 21st, they raise the flag and ring bells for him at the cemetary. He was a United States Marine, who fought in World War 11. Lillian (maiden name Cerveny)Hintz is also buried at Bohemian National next to her husband Harold Hintz. John and Mary (Dvorak) Cerveny (Elsie's parents) are there also. Blanche (maiden name Cerveny) Shicolski is at St. Adalbert cemetary in Chicago.I don't know where Emma (Cerveny) Fredrick is buried. She lived in Warrenville,IL. Her properties bordered the Warrenville forest preserve. Her husband was a police officer and died in the line of duty at the Chicago Worlds Fair. Years later she married the Mayor of Warrenville. A lot of this whole family is buried at Bohieman National or St. Adelberts cemetarys in Chicago,IL. I also beleive a few Cervenys to be buried at St. Marys cemetary. This is Susie, John L.Cerveny's (reds) grandaughter. Please feel free to email me. susanr223@att.net

This name had many different spellings over the years. cerveny originated from the spanish name cervantes. during the spanish reveloution they settled along the foothills of the carpathian mountains in old world transylvania. where cerveny reigned for years. in the later years during all the fighting in the country, royalty john and james, two brothers left the castle and set out for america. The cerveny castle is now the cerveny kamen castle at the foothills of the carpathian mountains in bohemia. these are the ancestors of john cerveny that was married to mary (dvorak) cerveny. the couple who had john, mamie, elsie, blanche, josephine, charles and james. John jr. married mildred (gniadek)cerveny and had thomas, gloria, maryanne, josephine, and john.

Hi Don, I'm not sure you are still checking messages as the one I am replying to is from several years ago.

There is a possibly that the Cerveny family I am researching may be the brother of your great-grandmother Josephine Roberts.

"James" Cerveny, as enumerated in the 1900 federal census and again in the 1905 MN state census. In the 1910 census his name is enumerated at "Vincent". Two newspaper estate articles I found in 1919 refer to him as "Vencel"......so I'm not sure what his name actually was.

I believe he died after the 1910 census enumeration but prior to the 1920 census. His wife was Katherine Wondrasch, also from Plzen (Pilsen).

Does this sound like it may be part of your line?

Linda

Vencel Cerveny - born 1866

Vencel Cerveny married Katherine Wondrasch and they had the following children; John(Jack)b.1892, Vencil (b.1893), Edward (b.1894), William (b.1901) and Mary (b.1903).

I located the family in the 1900 and 1910 census living in St. Louis Co., MN. In the 1920 census Katherine is listed as widowed. Vencel Cerveny must have died sometime after the 1910 census enumeration, but before the 1920 census.

I've located a couple of old newspaper articles from 1919 that refer to Katherine and the estate of Vencel Cerveny.

After Vencel's death Katherine must have remarried to a George Forst as this is where she appears in the 1930 census, residing in St. Louis County, MN. Katherine's name as it appeared in her sister Barbara's obituary in 1947 was Mrs. George Forst, so I believe this to be her.

I would love to hear from you if any of this fits into your family research as I have many blanks in this Cerveny family.

Best regards,
Linda
HI all, Just obtained a long searched for marriage license and certificate for my sons' great grandfather, Josef Cerveny (born 1861) and Barbora Priban. They were married on Aug. 4, 1881 in Chicago. I only know of one child (William dob Nov. 1889) who married Rose, and had at least five children. The fifth child was George Joseph Cerveny, died in 1940 after having one son, George Joseph Cerveny, Jr., my son's father and my ex. Any information on the marriage date for William and Rose would be helpful, or information on Josef and Barbara.
Re: The Cerveny Name

Your mention of the name Anton caught my eye. My gggrandparents were Michael and Magdelene Cervena (pronounced and written in several places "Cerveny".) They were from Bavaria (with much discussion of the Black Forest), but simply said Germany. I know Magdalene was a Bindel, so when I found a letter addressed to their daughter (my ggrandmother) Mary from a woman named Anna Eckl who says she is Mary's cousin I wondered where she fit into the family. She (Anna) talks about an older brother named Anton. My guess is that her mother, Mary, had been a Cerveny.

The other name the Eckl family and the Cervena families have in common is "Aloysius," as this was Anna's father's name and Mary's brother's name. Have you found this name in your family?

My speculation about my Cervana family is that since they didn't settle with any of the other Cervenys who came to America and because neither could read or write English that the spelling just got changed without their knowledge.

The only history I have about them is that Magdalene had several (six?) children before they moved to American, all of whom died. The baptismal records of their oldest surviving daughter, Francis, says that Michael was from Vilzing and Magdalene from a place spelled something like Prinzfelburg. Michael applied for his naturalization in June of 1886.

Unless my gggrandparents picked a new last name out of a hat when they came to America, I have to assume they are related to a least one other Cerveny family out there.

The reason you don't have much on that side of the family is because I have alot of it!! I am currently in California for the winter and will not return to my summer home until May. All of the things are in my safe there, so I can't really accurately describe what I have until I return. As I mentioned, I have Anna and Francis' marriage certificate and her burial receipt. I have quite a few old photos-mostly of female children (probably the Brichta children)--and maybe some photos of adults. Most of the photos are labeled and dated and the name "Brichta" is prominent in the labeling. Most of the photos are from the 1890's. There are probably 8-10 photos. I will be glad to copy them and send them to you when I return. I imagine Jennie is in quite a few of the pictures. Feel free to call me here in CA anytime: 760-328-4446

Her parents were Albert and Catharina.

I would be interested in knowing what Brichta memorabilia you have. I have seen a picture of Frank Brichta but little else has come down through this side of the family.

Cerveny or Cervana or Cerveni or...

My great-great grandparents came to Wisconsin from Bavaria sometime before 1887. They setteled in the Chippewa Valley near Bloomer where gggrandpa was a wagon wheel maker.Their names were Michael and Magdalena Cervana (as our family spells it), but I have seen it spelled several other ways on the little documentation I have been able to find. The most thorough information I have come across were on baptismal records for my ggrandmother and her sister from the Catholic Church in Bloomer. The records indicate her sister, Frances, was born on March 23, 1887 to Michael and Magdalena (Tindel) Cerviny. My grandmother's baptismal records say she, Mary Paulina, was born on October 20, 1893 to Michael and Magdalena (Bindel) Cerveni. It also says Michael was from Vilring (spelling?) in Bavaria and Magdalena was from Prinrfelburg (spelling?) in Bavaria. Michael and Magdalena also had a son named Louis who was born in 1899. The church has no burial records of Magdalena even though her name is on the grave stone with Michael. I don't know if either of them had siblings or where they came into the United States. I cannot find any naturalization or census information for any of them. I'm also sure that the country borders changed so much back then that I'm not even sure what country to search in. If anyone has some suggestions of places to start looking, I would love the assistance. I just think they probably never spoke English or very little and therefore the recording of their last name has been muddled so much the inconsistency is making this a real challenge.
Thanks, Cindy

Cerveny name

I can add a few more spellings to your list for Cerveny, as I have spent countless, fruitless hours looking for my family's spelling of Cervana, which I have also seen as Cerveni. I am wondering since my family always pronounced it Cerveny, if we somehow fit into all of these other names but somehow changed the spelling once again. My great-great-grandparents, Michael and Magdelena (Bindel or Tindel) were born in Bavaria and came to Bloomer, Wisconsin sometime before their first child, Francis was born in 1887. Their only son, Louis died at a young age, so as far as I have been able to track, our name, Cervana, begins and ends with my great-great grandparents. Does this seem like it fits in with anyone's family information?

My grandmother was Alida Anna Wanek. She was born in 1891 in Albert Lea,MN to Thomas J. Wanek and Eliza JaneWanek. She lived there while a child before they moved to Idaho. "TJ" Wanek was a cigar manufacturer . I am not sure who Anna is. She may be my grandmother's sister. Or aunt, etc. When was Anna Cerveny born? I don't have the death certificate availbable right now (in storage), but I believe she died in the early 1900's, so was probably not a sister. I have the marriage certificate of Anna and Francis Cerveny. Also the itemized bill from the mortuary when Anna Cerveny died. She was somehow related to Alida Anna Wanek because these two documents were in Alida's possession when she died. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Cerveny

Hi! My name is Lauran Gerbens and I am researching one of the numerous Chicago Cerveny families. On June 8, 1876, 21 year old Bohemian immigrant Vaclav Cerveny married 19 year old Bohemian immigrant Josefa Prachar in a civil ceremony in Chicago. This marriage resulted in the births of four children. Two children survived infancy: John born on July 31, 1878, and Mary born in December 1879. Sometime after 1881, Josefa dies(?) and Vaclav marries 24 year old Bohemian immigrant, Annie Rada, on December 12, 1885. Vaclav and Annie went on to have three sons: William (abt 12/1887), Joseph (5/20/1890),and George (2/1893). I am a descendant of Vaclav and Josefa's daughter, Mary (who marries Joseph Kubu in September 1900). I am working to identify her brother, John, from the many John Cervenys that lived in the Chicago area. John was not living in his father's house for the 1900 census so he probably was married. When his father died in 1912 John was married to a woman with the first name of Mary (listed in the obituary). This seems likely to be the John Cerveny that married Mary Dvorak and went on to have ten children. The age listed in the 1910 census for the John Cerveny that was married to Mary Dvorak was about correct for Vaclav's son, John. I have sent to Illinois for more records to help prove or disprove this connection. If this sounds like your family, please write. I'd enjoy sharing my family information.

I'll check at home tonight for my records of Anna Wanek Cerveny. As I recall she and Francis Cerveny were married in 1875; he died in 1907 and she in 1911.

An anecdote relating to Anna has come down through my family. Francis' daughter (my great-grandmother) was Minnie Veronica Cerveny, who married Frank Brichta and had four children, the youngest of whom was my grandmother, Johanna Julia "Jennie" Brichta (born 1882). Minnie died young (and in an insane asylum) and Jennie lived for a time with her grandparents, the Cervenys. In the summer, Anna used to send Jennie to the store to get ice cream. Jennie used a porcelain pitcher, which would hold almost half a gallon. It cost five cents to fill it up! The pitcher is currently owned by my mother, Jennie's youngest daughter.

Barry Noonan
Madison, WI

A Cerveny did not "invent the trombone" but Vaclav Frantisek Cerveny (1819-1896) was a noted musical instrument maker, who invented many brass instruments, none of which are regularly played today. He founded a factory for production of such instruments which still exists.

He was also my great-great-grandfather's brother!

Barry C.
Anna Wanek was the second wife of my great-great-grandfather, Francis V. Cerveny. I am descended from the first wife (Johanna Hubatscheck); Francis and Anna had no children. Anna has no death certificate but I eventually found her date of death in Union Cemetery (Milwaukee) records (1911, I believe).

I would be interested to know whether you are related to these people and how you acquired the marriage certificate.

Barry C.
To find information on the CR towns: http://mesta.obce.cz
The Czech phone book is at http://phone.quick.cz
www.iarelative.com Czeching out our Ancestors
www.csagsi.org
www.cgsi.org
The CR archive in Plzen should provide the information as long as you know names, dates, religion.
The phone book for city of Plzen is listing 43 CERVENYs.
I would suggest writing a letter but to which Cerveny. Just too many of Cervenys but you know there is one Martin Cerveny in Plzen's phone book. Maybe he was named after a family member. Never know.
I do not have much here, but my sister had sent me some copies of birth certs. and I was noticing that Helen Cerveny (my grandmother) her Fathers name was Frank Cerveny, I am wondering if possibly he was the same Frank Jr. you mentioned was the brother of your father? If he was he (Frank) married Anna Salficky who then had my grandmother. I did notice that they were both living in Cecero, IL at the time of my grandmothers birth, and they were also from Bohemia, which is a part of Czech. Please email me back if you have any info.

Thank you,
Brenda
