James Cesssford/Jane Howden

I am trying to identify the parents of James Cessford b. 1821 in Channelkirk, Roxburghshire, Scotland and d. 9 Feb 1894 in Leith, Midlothian, Scotland. He married Jane Howden in 1847 in Crichton, Edinburghshire, Scotland. I have identified their 9 children. He was my great-great grandfather.

what do you know about James Cessford's other marriage? Was there a son James (b. 1821) in an earlier marriage ? Also, I have documentation on most of James and Cecilia Beattie's children, but not for John Beattie Cessford (b. 1826) (who is the object of my search -- to confirm his parents)

Mary E Cessford was my gg grandma born in wood side co durham in 1864 her father was david born in chillingham northhumberland in about 1828 his occupation was a police man in the 1881 cencus the family were living in haswell co durham.

Hi, i am Jennifer Cessford, i live in morebattle which is the village just next to cessford farm, really my family is the one cessfords in the place where we were founded, haha. my granny told me it's to do with when the kerrs first built the castle at cessford they gave the cessfords who must have been good friends with them, some land then they called it after them 'Cessford' and the castle is next to the farm so it's called cessford farm, hope this helps.

Hello, I am Jennifer Cessford and i acctually live in Morebattle at this moment. i do know that my family have names going through the past as John, George, John, George, John, George ect. my father is a george and my grand father a John. As i noticed it was a george who got married and they then had a son called george. So i think i may be a decendent of this family tree, although i do not have anymore information and you started this search over 10 years ago i would like to hear what you have found and what you may find in the future. Mary E Cessford is my fatherinlaws grandmother ( Andrew Paterson)his father was John Paterson. I believe your grandfather must have been Andrew Cessford Paterson brother of John. We would love to see what Mary Elizabeth looked like my fatherinlaw has no photo's of his grandfather or grandmother or any of his uncle's and aunts.I have some information on the Cessford side of the family tree and quite a lot on the Paterson side .Maybe we can help each other.

My Grandfather was Robert Cessford who is another of David and Eliza's children. He married Annie Baker from Hendon, Sunderland and moved South during the depression. I will check with my living relatives but we don't have much from that period.

we may well be connected.
Our family descends from an Isabella Stewart from Allyth (born 1801), and she did have a sister named Janet. I do have a bit more information on that family.

What is interesting is that a great grandson of Isabella Stewart was given the second name of Cessford, as was his son- and we never knew from where it came. Now I see perhaps it was a via a great aunt's line- if your Janet Stewart, and our Janet Stewart are the same person, that is.

We also have a connection with Ann, born 1833 in Allyth, who married Edward Willmer from Lincs. I'm wondering if Ann (or Annie) may have been a cousin line, as she later adopted a daughter of my great great grandfather, shortly after his death.

you may have the information you want iam related to your side of the cessfords just stared my family tree, my great granny born 1864 was mary cessford her dad was david, if you go on www.curiousfox there are several people on there researching the cessfords the one i contacted was called mark he has gone right back to the 1700,s and further,all i can tell you is john and margery are 4 greats for me that is grandparents. frances

Richard Cessford married Catherine Davidson (either q/e June 1912 vol 10b pg294 or q/e Dec 1913 vol 10b pg126) in Newcastle Teesdale district, England,UK. They had a son, Richard Cessford in q/e Dec 1916 (listed in Newcastle, Teesdale district, England,UK vol 10b pg209). Since Catherine Cessford nee Davidson, the mother, died in q/e dec 1916(Newcastle, Teesdale district,England,UK vol 10b pg180, assuming childbirth death. Anyone have any info on what happened to baby Richard Cessford born 1916?

I know this is an old post, so you may already have the information, but the two Cessford families you mention are linked. John Cessford and George Cessford were half-brothers. John is the son of James Cessford (b. 1871) and his first wife Agnes Hunter, whilst George Cessford is the son of James and his second wife, Jane Morton (Morten). I have more info on these families, some of which is on my website wwwdotfoxeywhiskersdotnet (look at Berwickshire Todds).

Hello! Wow, I don't really know what to write ha. Erm, well I live in the North-east of England with my brother Martin and my dad Trevor. I have a sister (Claire) who's 23 this year. RUTH ESTHER CESSFORD of Redlands, California, passed away on December 24, 2007. Born in Buffalo, New York on May 16, 1918, Ruth was a resident of Elmhurst, Illinois, for 35 years, Sun City West, Arizona, for 17 years, and Redlands, California, for 3 years. I am from Sunderland, and I am trying, hopefully to be able to get any photos of my nana and her family. My nana was Mary Emma Cessford born 1911. She was the daughter of David and Eliza Cessford. David was a tailor.

I have a john cessford brother of David. John married Grace Brown. One of their sons is David cessford who married Eliza Armstrong. One of their daughters is Mary Emma Cessford who married William Armstrong. My father is from John Taylor not William Armstrong, and we kept my nanas maiden name Cessford.
If you have information on David and Eliza would really appreciate it.

Ann Cessford's parents were :

William Cessford and Janet Stewart.

William Cessford, Schoolmaster at Allyth, had died by the time of the marriage of his daughter Ann in 1874.

I have a very good friend called Cessford who did a little work on his family history many years ago. Sadly, he now suffers MS and is in no position to carry on with the research. He traced his family back to Chillingham, late 18th century as I recall. I helped him a little. I remember there was non-conformity and a possible irregular border marriage.

He once met a SAcot also interested in the name but he will be dead now thouigh it bis possible his work was deposited with the Scottish Genealogy Society.

I expect he would be very interested in any further progress with three though it would be unrealistic to think he could help in any detailed way.

I'm sorry to say my friend Bill Cessford died about 18 months ago. I'm not aware that his family is researching the Cessford ancestry.

I do recall a Rothbury connection - a marriage I think. There is also non-conformity but I dare say you have seen all that in the IGI. One ancestor was a game keeper - perhaps on the Percy estate but I fear many of the estate papers were destroyed but check with the local record office. I also think it would be prudent to look at the local poor books and for any signs of a Will or two.

All this is my memory of work (limited) done in the 1960s so not much help really. There are Sessfords in Cumbria but I don't know of a connection but I expect there is one.
