Joan,
We used to write and somehow lost touch. I am so sorry about Walter. I knew he was ill in 2001 when we were sharing Chacey information becuase you were not going to the Chacey Reunion in Pagosa Springs because he could not travel because of his health. Or am I wrong? Anyway, I am sorry. So very recent for you. I am out the door this morning but will get back to you later today. I too have not been able to do much with my geanology the past few years but am looking forward to getting back to it. I will tell you more about the Galloway conection later. I am glad we have reconnected here. Claudia Sladen in California

Stephanie,
I just saw your post from over a year ago and hope this will still reach you, that you haven't changed emails in that time. My great grandmother was a Chacey and I am in touch with a number of the Chacey family members.I attended a reunion in 2001 of Chaceys. It is an uncommon name because it was changed by one man in the late 1700s from Chasey. All the Chaceys are descended from him and his sons. They are still out there though. Contact me and I will help you get in touch with people who can answer your Chacey questions. Claudia Sladen

I do not have a reference to a book on Chacey, but there is a family file at the Wayne Co. Library in Wooster, OH. I was under the assumption that I was a decendant of Samuel and Anna Salome Warner Chacey, but I desecend thru Daniel and Elizabeth (Allen) to Elizabeth Chacey, a sister to Samuel, and Joseph Galloway. I do have information on the Warner line. There is a book in the Wayne Co. Library and the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, OH on the Warner Family.
Chacey family in Iowa

I am doing research on my mother-in-law's mother's side of the family. There is a lady by the name of Celia O. Eyestone (maiden name) who was married to Ulysses S Chacey (I think that he went by the name of Sherman.) They were married in 1889 and lived in the Martinsburg, Iowa area. They are buried at the Mt. Zion cemetery near Martinsburg, Iowa. They are listed in the 1900 Iowa census in Keokuk county. They had nine children. Usysses father was a gentleman by the name of Ithamar was born April 14, 1830, in Wayne county, Ohio, and lived there until 1856. He married Miss Mary E. Wettmer, October 9, 1851; she was born in Pennsylvania; they have five children living: Ithamar J., Ida R., Ulysses S., Elmer W., Samuel C.; lost three: William S. B. Almaina E., and Mary E. A. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Robert! I live in CA. and was born in 1948. My Mother was born in MN. in 1909.Her name is Claudia Frances Goar Robinson. Her Mother was Laura Emily Semon Goar, born in Morristown (Rice County) MN.in 1875 to Claude Francis Semon (born in France in 1824) and his wife Mary Catherine (!843). Until recently none of us knew Mary Catherine's maiden name or birth place. Some of the family thought she came from France, some Canada. I found a birth record of one of my grandmother's sisters listing Mary Catherine's birth place as Ohio. Just before Christmas I found her death certificate listing her birth place as Ohio, and her maiden name as Chacey, and her father as Peter Chacey. I have now made contact with others in the Chacey line. They are all from one family which changed the name from Chasey to Chacey. All seem to be descended from a Daniel Chacey (the name changer) and his four sons, Samuel, Peter (my ancester, John, and Daniel. They settled in Wayne County, Ohio area from New York, and spread from there after the Civil War. I think Peter may have also gone to Minnesota as did his daughter, Mary Catherine and her husband, Claude Semon. Do you come from Peter's line? Or do you know? Where in MN. is your family? E-mail me directly at csladen@aol.com. I have more info. Glad you contacted me. I do not know of other children of Peter and hope we find a connection there! Claudia

Susan, It was good to hear from you! And it sounds like you have more to add to the Chacey legacy. I am relatively new to most of this information. Much of what I have gotten has been from Ron Chacey, who is the family historian. He has information back to the 1600s. Also contacts with many of the Chacey lines today. Contact me directly and I will put you in touch with him. I have his files on Family Tree Maker, but it would be better if you got the information directly from him as he can answer more questions than I can. My Great grandmother was Mary Catherine Chacey (1843) daughter of Peter Pearce Chacey (1808), son of Daniel Chacey (1777), son of Leonard Chase (1749)and Mary Colbey. Leonard and Mary had a daughter listed as Molly (1782) sister of Daniel (and others) who may have been your Mary. There is MUCH more. E-mail me at csladen@aol.com and I can get you in touch with Ron who has far more info than I do. There is to be a family reunion in Colorado a year from next month. Claudia

Mary Ann, I am the great granddaughter of Mary Catherine Chacey (1843), daughter of Peter Pearce Chacey (1808), son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Allen)Chasey/Chacy/Chacey. I am fairly new to this as well, but have gotten a great deal of information from a Chacey in Colorado who has many of the family lines traced. I have been in contact with other Chaceys and descendants as well, including very recently, Susan A. who has some differant info. E-mail me directly at csladen@aol.com, or answer here and we can exchange more information and I can direct you to others who have more info on your line. It can get pretty confusing, but the more we exchange the better picture we may come up with! Claudia.

Thomas White Chasey NJ>?>Iowa

Still seeking info on Thomas White Chasey, son of Elias Chasrey and Lucy White. My great Grandfather, Thomas White Chasey, was born in Monmouth, NJ. abt 1846. He eventually settled in Iowa. Was married to (1) Minnie Throckmorton and (2) Ottumwa Miller. He had a brother, Charles Addison Chasey. Many of the settlers of the Lamoni, IA area were originally from IN, near Terre Haute. Elias apparently remarried after the death of Lucy and remained in NJ. Thomas and Charles ended up in Iowa. Story always was that Thomas was in some way adopted by another family. Perhaps another Chasey? How did he get to Iowa? Is he connected to the Indiana Chaseys/Chaceys. Any information appreciated. Thanks

Does anyone know anything about this man? He was apparently not mentioned in his aunt's will, tho his brother was. Was he not related by blood to the Chaseys? (Family stories always had him as a foundling of some sort). Or was he given over to another family upon the dealth of his mother shortly after his birth?
Daniel Chacey

I am sorry, but I do not know who Daniel's parents were. In 1810 Daniel, who was living in Saratoga Co., NY at the time, was named among the heirs of Stephen Chasey in a deed for the sale of Stephen's bounty land. This deed connects Daniel to the Chasey's of Monmouth Co., NJ, but his relationship to Stephen and to the other heirs remains a mystery. You may want to check out the posts on the Chasey forum at Genforum.com, where there are several messages pertaining to the NJ Chasey's, Daniel, and Stephen Chasey's deed.

By the way, since my last post here, I have learned that the name of Daniel's first wife was in fact Serviah Vandike.

Susan

Chacey-Bendever

Hi Lori, I am not aware of a Chacey-Bendever connection, however if you can provide some more specific information I might be able to help you. I notice that your subject heading named Samuel Chacey. Do you have any information about this Samuel? Where and when did he live? There was a Daniel Chacey who had a son named Samuel who left a large body of descendants, so perhaps your Samuel belongs to this family.

You may also want to post a query on the Chasey forum in Genforum. The Chasey or Chacey surname was not a common one. The family originated in NJ, and began migrating to OH ca 1814. Daniel Chacey's branch is the only branch to spell the surname "Chacey".

Name of Daniel Chacey's 1st Wife Confirmed

Two sources concerning the marriage of Daniel Chacey in Middletown, NJ, give conflicting information about his wife's name, although both agree on the date the marriage took place.

Daniel was married in Middletown, NJ by Justice of the Peace Joseph Stillwell on 27 Mar 1797. According to the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, Daniel's wife was Serviah Van Dike (vol. 56, p. 55). The book "Marriages in Monmouth County, NJ", however, has Daniel married to Louicia Van Dike (p. 18). The Monmouth County Archives, who has the marriage returns in their collections, has confirmed that the name of Daniel's first wife is, in fact, Serviah Van Dike.

The date of Daniel's marriage to his second wife, Elizabeth Allen, is not known, nor whether the marriage occurred in Middletown, NJ, Saratoga, NY, or Wayne Co., OH. It is possible that some of Daniel's children, for example Samuel, who was born in 1802, may in fact be the children of Serviah Van Dike and not Elizabeth Allen.

Any information about Elizabeth Allen which may shed some light on the parentage of Daniel's children, would be greatly appreciated.

Susan

The people on the Chasey forum are descended from some of Daniel's ancestors. There is also information there about the origins of John Chasey, the immigrant ancestor.

Thank you for including Salome's first name as Anna.

Hi Mary, I just posted a message about Daniel Chacey on this list on 6/20. Just wanted to bring it to your attention in case you did not see it. Take a look at the message. I have some questions about Daniel, and would be glad to share information with you. I am descended from Mary Chasey, whom I believe might be Daniel's sister.

Susan

Daniel Chacey

Hi, I too am descended from the Chasey's and have some information to share about Daniel Chacey. Daniel was born ca 1777 in Middletown, Monmouth Co., NJ. His parents are unknown. The immigrant ancestor, John Chasey, had two sons; Pearce and John. One of these two sons is probably Daniel's father. While still living in Middletown, Daniel married a Van Dike, either Serviah or Louicia, depending on which resource you use.

I am descended from Mary Chasey, wife of William Van Dorn. I believe Mary and Daniel may have been siblings, since they both followed the same migration pattern. In 1810 Daniel was recorded on the NY census in Saratoga Co. only four households away from Mary. By 1814 he was living in Wayne Co., OH and Mary was in Richland Co., OH. Although I do not know if Daniel and Mary were siblings, they were most definitely related. In 1809 Daniel and Mary were both named among about 16 heirs of Stephen Chasey in a deed. It is not known how Daniel is related to Stephen, nor to any of the heirs.

I do not know when Daniel's first wife died, nor when he married Elizabeth Allen. Any information on this would be much appreciated. According to the 1810 census, Daniel's household consisted of four males under the age of 10. I assume these males are the same four sons named in his will; Samuel, Peter, Daniel, and John. I am reasonably certain that Daniel left Middletown, NJ and moved to Saratoga ca 1805. Samuel, who was born in 1802, was probably born in NJ. Daniel, who was born in 1811, was probably born in NY. The other two sons, Peter and John, could have been born in either NJ or NY.

In addition, I do not know when Daniel married his second wife Elizabeth Allen. Although sources regarding his first wife provide different names, they do agree on the date of his marriage; 27 Mar 1797. The mother of Daniel's four boys could be either Serviah/Louicia or Elizabeth. Any information on this subject would also be greatly appreciated!

Susan
