Hello

My name is Tony Sedgman and my mum is Barabar May Chaffe but was born in Redruth, Cornwall. Her father was William Henry Chaffe and married Dorothy May Barkle. Although I know his father was Frederick John Chaffe (and he married a Katie Blewett) I am not sure whether he was the one born in Buckfastleigh or another one born in Camborne. Mum can remember his death in the 1950s but can't pinpoint the year as this would help to determine her ancestry.

Although I can't help immediately with your specific request I would be ever so grateful if you could share any details of the Chaffes in Buckfastleigh as my mum reckons she was told as a child that her relatives originated from Devon. If she is related to the Buckfastleigh Chaffes I can give you all the details that I have of the Chaffes in Cornwall.

Many thanks for your time.

Tony

Chaffe family

I am married to a Chaffe who is descended from a James Chaffe and Margaret Elliott. They had a son James Chaffe who married a Clara Rice. They had 3 sons, William James, John Gilbert, and George Rice as well as a daughter, Clara.
My family records indicate that John Gilbert went to St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada and was a carpenter and builder. George Rice went to Darmouth and was a motor boat engineer. Clara never married and kept a stationers and tobacconist shop on Fore Street. The William James Chaffe from whom my husband is descended managed and owned a woolen mill in Buckfastleigh, Devon, England. All the above mentioned Chaffes were from Buckfastleigh. The thread related to the origin of the name Chaffe and Chafecombe are similar to my notes. If anyone has any further information on the Chaffes please post. I am particularly trying to get information on James Chaffe (married Margaret Elliott).
He was born in 1820 and died in 1904.
Oh Hi Donna!

Haven't seen you and Jim in a while perhaps we'll get together at a Christmas gathering. Anything you can send would be great! I have just been looking up things on my side and thought I would check some stuff out for Carl. He doesn't have much info but Jim's dad probably does and Carl's sister Sue seems to know alot. I have a copy of Redvers' service papers from England if you would like a copy. As far as lineage I have Redvers, Sampson, Nicolas and (Richard and jenny - no last name for Jenny) and then that's it. As far as any siblings of Sampson and up I don't have anything. My e-mail is ccannon4@cogeco.ca. Thanks Donna its great to hear from you! say hi to Jim for Carl and I.

Carol :)

Yes, Chaffcombe still exists in England. It is located within a couple of miles from Chard, which is in Somerset County, England. One can get to the site using Google search engine and search for "England Counties", it will take you to a site from England which one can select any county in England to locate records. I was surprised to find Chaffcombe there! Any of you interested please, like I did, contact any/all of connections given to gain info on Chaffcombe and the true origin of our name. Also have asked for assistance in tracing Thomas Chaffe, first known Chaffe in the New World, Hingham, MA July 1637 from Hingham land-grant documents. I will share any info I get with all of you. Thanks.

Dear Sir

I think people should be careful about this origin in Chaffcomb claim.
We do not all come from there and also I doubt very much the surname came from this place at all.
It means Ire or to anger.
Chauffe is probably closer to its original spelling and this relates to the boiling process in cognac production.

Nicola

Reply to email about Richard Chaffe/Sampson. Tracing my father's "uncle" Bill who married Thirza, I got confused with lines. Apologies. I know how difficult it is though so will hunt my notes and keep eye open for your line.
I still hunt my Thirza and Bill Chaffe who had gone to Holbeton by 1930s. Cannot trace them in 1901 yet in 1936 they were in mid60s-70s. Thirza not a very common name especially with Chaffe added to it so quite bewildered.

This is a quiet board, so I hope someone sees this.
My father's grandfather was Redvers S. Chaffe. He married Flora Slater in Waterdown Ontario (Flamborough Co)..in the 1920s?
Flora's mother was an Attridge, and I can trace them back to 1809. The Slaters I can go back to Germany in 1790.
The Chaffes I can find no record of.
Redvers was an architect in the Toronto area and owned a home at Leslie and the 404 (gone now)
If anyone knows anything about Redvers I'd love to hear from you. thanks

Re: CHAFECOMBE or CHAFFCOMBE

Hi Terry,
I have been in touch with two surname researchers who disagree on whether or not the family founded the village of Chaffecomb or not. Just as there are a number of meanings of the name.

1. "keeper of the calves"
2. "the worthless part to throw away." (ouch!)
3. " a________valley" (re: Newfoundland contact)

Name is reported to have been originally speled as simply "Chafe"

I read on a History of England link on line that William the Conqueror, when he split up the country into the sections, that a large are that included the village (correct spelling?) was given to a Bishop. I can't remember his name.
The Bishop then designated who would get what and the "whos" then placed tenants on parts of their awards except for the land they held for themselves, their families and their Manors. Many of those that received partials were Loyalists to William and those that fought by his side etc.

I tried to copy all that history the copy machine jammed up and almost became a lawn ornament. I haven't tried to find the info since.

If I locate the web site I will put it on the board.

Also was told that no variation of the name is in the Domes (doomsday) book. That has some significance but can't recall what.

Also, if you find a map of Somerset that shows the village, I would love to have a copy. I tried and gave up.

A cousin and one of my sons on separate trips to England several years ago each walked those old streets of Chaffecombe/Chaffecomb, before any of us knew that there might be a connection to the family. Eerie.
Happy Spring Happy hunting,
Helen
