Norris - Chalfant connection

I'm looking for information on the Norris - Chalfant connection. Amanda Norris (unknown maiden name) was born 06 Jun 1833, died 13 Oct 1874 and was buried in the Chalfant Cemetery along with a son, Joseph Norris b. 23 Mar 1868, d. 01 Jun 1868. Born to this union were children Ada L. (Mrs. George Clay Anderson), Jennie (Mrs. J. D. Woolery), Mary (Mrs. John McCracken) and Lucy or Lulu Norris. I'm aware that George Clay Anderson's mother was Elizabeth Jane Chalfant, wife of J J Anderson. Am interested in any information on any of the above mentioned names or relationships. Thanks

Obituary: Elizabeth Watkins (Cunningham) Chalfant Prince

Ukiah Republican Press
Wednesday, September 18, 1935
Lovely Life Of Elizabeth Prince Over—
Buried Monday

A fine mother of the old school was called to the arms of her Maker Saturday last, after an illness extending over several weeks terminated in the death of Elizabeth W. Prince. The dead lady was a Californian. Here she was born January 31, 1856, and here she lived the whole of her
life. At the Presbyterian church funeral services Rev. E. H. Benson spoke endearing and consoling words.	Dr. Robherd Thomas sang, accompanied by Mrs. Thomas. The day before Dr. Lynn T. White paid a deserved and kindly worded tribute to his dead parishioner. Interment was in Ukiah cemetery, the pallbearers being G. E. Jamison, C. H. Duncan, B. M. Davidson, P. W. Handy, William Bromley and George P. Anderson.

The Remaining Family.
There are left to mourn the passing of their exceptionally fine mother, the following children—Mrs. C. G. Allen, Stanford, Dr. C. W. Chalfant and Recorder A. J. Chalfant.

A General Favorite.
The dead lady had friends on every hand hereabouts. Hers was one of those kind, motherly dispositions that appeal to all. Mrs. Prince lived a quiet, Christian life and, wherever she could, she bestowed such charities as she could afford. Even while ill herself, Mrs. Prince saw to it she made frequent visits to those who were more sick than herself and many a call was made by her to help cheer up the ailing ones

Not Long Sick.
Up to a short time ago Mrs. Prince enjoyed excellent health but allowing the death of her husband there came a gradual failure and a noticeable change was observed. The illness which ended in death started about three weeks ago.

Dispatch Democrat
Friday, September 20, 1935
Church Rites Mark Passing of Beloved Elizabeth I Prince

A personal loss to every man and woman who had the privilege of knowing Mrs. Elizabeth Prince, was sustained in her death, which occurred at the Ukiah General hospital last Saturday, after an illness of several weeks, during which time her sons and daughter and many friends alternated between hope and fear, as indications marked her improvement or decline.

A resident of this valley since childhood, no one was more favorably known or more generally beloved than Mrs. Prince; no one more richly deserved the esteem of all than she.

Funeral services, held Monday afternoon in the Presbyterian church, were outstanding evidence of the worth of the life just closed; of the fine character and the truly Christian spirit.

Mrs. Prince was a native of California, born January 31, 1856, and came to Ukiah with her parents at the age of seven, where she had since resided and where her children grew to manhood, and womanhood under her watchful eye.

The funeral was under direction of the Eversole Mortuary, with Rev. E. H. Benson officiating. Dr. Robherd Thomas was the vocalist.

The pallbearers were George P. Anderson, William Bromley, P. W. Handy, B. M. Davidson, C. H. Duncan and G. E. Jamison.

Burial was in Ukiah cemetery.

Bereaved by their loss are her three children. Mrs. C. G. Allen of Stanford, A. J. Chalfant and C. W. Chalfant of Ukiah.
Obituary: Samuel J. Chalfant (1845-1891)

Mendocino Dispatch Democrat
Friday, October 23, 1891
Death of S. J. Chalfant

On Monday afternoon at about 5 o'clock, after a long and painful illness, the life of S. H. Chalfant, of Ukiah, passed away. The death of the deceased was not unexpected. For several weeks he had been lying between life and death, suffering from that insatiate enemy--consumption. He had been afflicted with the dread disease for about two years, and slowly but surely it sapped his life away, and on Tuesday afternoon his remains were borne to the tomb. The funeral, which was conducted by Ukiah Lodge No. 174, I.O.O.F., of which deceased was an honored member. Large delegations from Ukiah Lodge No. 33, A.O.U.W., Ukiah Lodge No. 45, O.C.F., and Eagle Fire Co., No. 1 (in uniform), in all of which bodies deceased was a member, also accompanied the remains to the tomb. Rev. T. A. Atkinson officiated at the services at the house, and at the grave the solemn ceremonies of the Odd Fellows' ritual were performed.

S. J. Chalfant was born in Maryland on March 25th, 1845, and was therefore 46 years and nearly seven months old. He came to California when 19 years of age and joined his brothers, John E. and Aaron, on the coast of this county, where he engaged in the lumbering business. In 1871 he was elected Sheriff of this county on the Democratic ticket, and re-elected to that office in 1873. He performed the duties of his office with marked ability, to the credit of himself and the satisfaction of the people. Retiring from the office he returned to the coast and again engaged in the lumbering business, for several years being Superintendent for the Albion Lumber Company, at Albion. Seven years ago he came back to Ukiah, buying the furniture business of W. W. Cunningham & Son. He continued in that business (the last two years in partnership with his brother-in-law, Charles Cunningham) until sickness prevented him from attending to his duties, and a short time ago he sold his interest in the business to his father-in-law, W. W. Cunningham.

Deceased was married on December 25th, 1872, to Elizabeth W., the only daughter of W. W. Cunningham, of Ukiah. Three children--two boys and a girl--are the result of that happy union.

Jesse, as he was familiarly called, was one of God's noblemen. He was a loyal friend, and those who knew him best loved him most. There was neither equivocation nor deceit in his make up. Straightforward manliness characterized his whole life, and his death is most sincerely regretted by a large community which had learned to honor and respect him.

His wife and children and immediate relatives have the warmest sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement.

Phil Carnahan
Sebastopol, CA

Wondering if anyone has a Myers Chalfant in this line. He was born about 1834 I believe in Chester Co. In 1860 he was married to Anna McKim (children Lewis, Clara, Ida) and living in Chester. By 1870 he had moved to Media, Delaware Co. and was married to Elizabeth Brown. He died in Media in 1896 (hung himself from the rafters of his barn). He is my gg grandfather and I have had no luck in finding out who his parents were. Thanks so much!

To whom it may concern;
I have a photo of Daniel Spring Chalfant, Columbia Pa. He was my grandmother's great uncle. Besides being Street Supervisor. In the year 1848 he was also Assist. Chief Burgess of Columbia. In the photo Uncle Dan as the family knew him is sitting on a horse pulling a political campaign wagon with his name on it. I know his children's names but not much else of the connecting family. My Great grand parents were Frank 1859 and Emma Chalfant 1857 I would be more than glad to trade pic of Dan for pic of Sarah and nay other family info
Thank you; Jim Smith

If you have any information about this I would like to know as if this is accurate this could be a son of another Nickoson that I am trying to trace.

Hi Michael. Maybe you can help me. I’m looking for an Adam Harbolt (found different spellings; one of them Harpold) who was born sometime between 1756 and 1758 according to Pennsylvania Archives having to do with the Revolutionary War. He showed up in Bedford County, PA in the 1790 Census and was still there in the 1820 Census. He is also listed as a witness for another pensioner in 1823 so he was still alive then. His widow is listed in the 1830 Census so he died sometime between 1823 and 1830, but I’ve found no record of where and/or when. People have told me that he’s the Adam Harpole (many different spellings) born in May of 1757, but I can’t prove it. Any help from your lineage, please?

Re: Chalfant genealogy

Hi cousin-
The Chalfant linage is very extensive and long!!! I just recently started my search and came across some extensive work someone did on the internet - If you do a google search for "Chalfant" you can find a webpage - I think it is paperdolls or something like that is a place you can start.
The Chalfant line basically came over from England - 1699?? and settled in Pennyslyvania around Brandywine on 250 acres - called Rockland Manor. This is where it is somewhat confusing - There were 3 John Chalfants that came over - John Sr. and wife Ruth Chandler with their sons - John and Robert and a nephew named John Chalfant. My lineaage is with the nephew John. This line goes from Pennsylvania-Ohio-Indiana area and then my branch comes to Michigan in 1920 times. There were a lot of Chalfants in the Indiana area for a long time. The other branch I believe some went south and then west. In this line there are some relatives that were in the Revolutionary War and Civil War!
I hope this gives you so insight and a basic starting point - good luck and email me if you need any help : )

p.s. their was also some extensive research done by Paul Chalfant in Colorado and in a book the Addington/Chalfant book.

CHALFANT & ASTBROKE/ASTBROOK

Just a note to say that while poking around on the web today, I realised that the father-in-law of William CHALFANT, sometime Mayor of High Wycombe, was no doubt Robert ASTBROKE, not, as it's generally given, ARTBROKE. Robert ASTBROKE was also Mayor of High Wycombe several times, interspersed with William's terms of office. He was the purchaser of Loakes Manor and there are clearly several other surviving records of him besides the will which is generally cited.

While I was at it, there was also an exciting reference to the real estate of William CHALFONT at http://www.petergoodearl.co.uk/ken/totteridge/totteridge2.ht.... The reference is from Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies Document D/BASM/87/1, and says that in 1543:

At this court came Wm. CHALFONT & did fealty to the King for the messuage & lands called TAWYERS 17sh. yearly rent which he lately purchased.
Hello, My name is Burnith Chalfant. I am from Iowa and am living in Arizona. My gradfather's name is (was) Kenmore Gerber. As is (was) my father, my brother and son. I do not remember my great-grandfather's name, he died before I was born. I believe my grandfather's brother's were Ralph & Charles. My older brother, Kenmore III (Sam) knows more. My Dad's brother's are Lerry (Nevada), Vernon (Missouri) & Ronald (Connecticut). I have heard that our ancestor came over from England with William Penn but do not know for sure.

I have the two photos of George J. Chalfant for a book I am writing. The others were seen in the mentioned archives while researching him for the book.
Of the two I have, one is from the US Military History Institute in Carlisle PA and the other was sold privately about eight years ago and the whereabouts are currently unknown, but luckily the last known dealer made a digital copy for his mail order catalog & I have a copy of that scan. Unfortunately it is not of a very high resolution, but it is all that I have found so far.
Are you related to George? There was some mystery surrounding his cause of death and I am seeking primary source information.
Thanks,
Chris

I am researching the 87th PA Vol Inf and trying to locate photographs of the men from that regiment. In my research I have located two photos of Capt George Jonathan Chalfant, Co A 87th PVI. One has been published in the regimental history but the other is a rarer image.
In addition to these I have also found that the York County Heritage Trust in York PA has photographs of the following Chalfant family members in their archives:
3 photos of George Chalfant's wife, Eliza Jane Myers, one being a group photo with two or three unID'd women and one man. (YCHT file 17570)
One photo of George Chalfant's mother Mary Ann Jessop Chalfant and one photo of his sister Hannah Chalfant (YCHT file 17571)
Obit with photo of George's son James E. Chalfant (YCHT Chalfant family file)

If anyone has any photographs of Capt George Chalfant or information that would aide in writing the biography of Capt. George Chalfant, please contact me.
Thank you
Chris

I too would love to have some information on Daniel Spring Chalfant and his wife, Sarah. He was my g-g grandfather and I have very little information on this family. My mother was a Chalfant and her father was Luther Daniel Chalfant (Daniel, Jr.'s son). My grandfather had two sisters, Gertrude Anna, and Beatrice Mary. They were all born in Columbia (my grandfather in 1903). Daniel, Jr. was married to Anna Mary Gross who was born in Cumberland, MD in 1878. I know that Daniel, Jr. died at a relatively young age. My great-grandmother remarried a man named Howard Lehman from York, PA and she passed away in 1961 when I was 14.
If you have any information on this family could you please share it with me?
Thank you,
Marianne Nevin Spangler

Chalfant Photos

I've recently come into possession of some Chalfant photo's. I'm willing to email copies to other family members. I have the following:

Benjamin, Myrtle (Story), Nelson Reid Chalfant. Photo looks to have been taken before the birth of Nelson's younger brother (@1900). Assumption that the photo was taken in Neligh, Antelope County, Nebraska. Ben's father was Duncan C Chalfant, mother was Mary Louise Hammitt.

Edwin Chalfant. I don't have much information on Edwin - he may have married. I have that he was born in Nebraska (probably Antelope County). Parent's were also Duncan & Mary Chalfant.

Clyde Leslie Chalfant. This is just a photo of him. He was married to Mamie Stewart. They had 3 children: Orville, Lyle, DeWayne Chalfant. His parent's were also Duncan and Mary Chalfant.

Orville & DeWayne Chalfant. See above. This photo was taken when they were quite young. Lyle is missing from the photo. I actually think that this is a picture of Lyle & DeWayne, Orville was born in @1901 & DeWayne @1912 - so the older of the boys would have been @11 years. He looks younger than that. Lyle would have been born in May of 1904 - so would have been about 8 years old in the picture. Could be a labeling error on my G-Grandmother's part.

I also have a few photos that are labeled simply "Chalfant", most are of young children. One is a seated couple. I'm assuming that they are Duncan and Mary Chalfant - but I do not have verification of that. Any help in identifying these pictures would be appreciated. Because of familial ties - and of these should be Duncan & Mary's descendants or somehow tied to the Beecham family of South Dakota and Nebraska (As follows in order of birth: Robert W, Eugene, Samuel H, Elizabeth, Edwin M, Isaac Cortland, Anna M, Benjamin S, Clyde Leslie, Russell (died young))

Thanks very much!
Brandon W Erikson.

Hi Nancy, I hope you do not think I am terrible. You had sent me a photo copy of my Grandmother Dolly and Aunt Maggie. I think you have figured out which is which. Dolly had some problems with the family in the late 30's, she was a disruptive in a lot of ways. A young man at that time had been to Idaho to visit her. His name was John as I remember. He was suppose to stay a month, but left after a week. I think the trip Maggie took to Idaho was kind of a peace make up thing. anyway the Photo you have was taken just after my Mom and Dad's divorce. so would be late 1944 or early 1945. She was a really neat Lady, very nice to me and my mother. If you look closly you can see the son in service pin on my Grandmothers dress. Mom's divorce put my Dad into the Military WWll. My e-mail address is ekawano@worldnet.att.net The person you wrote to about the correct name is a friend. She is the one who actually owns the web site on ancestory. Got me started when Harry died to try and keep my mind off things. I am going to send you Dolly's Bible. It really is not much since she started it with her own marriage, but I have no one else in the family that I know, and it should be kept with some connection to her. I will need you address, as I have really misplaced so much, I can't find anything. Thanks for replying.
Edie
Edie Kawano
1604 W.

I am looking for descendants of Washington Chalfant (b. 2 Sep 1813 in Jeff. Co., Ohio) and Elizabeth McFarlane (b. abt 1827, prob. Jeff Co., Ohio). I only know of two daughters seen in the 1850 Census: Eliza J. (age 4 in 1850) and Rebecca A. (age 1 in 1850). Washington and Elizabeth were not married until 1848, so Eliza is apparently from an earlier marriage. I am told there may have been a first wife named Smith. I would like to know her name and the names of any other descendants of this couple. Thanks.

Carrie B. Chalfant - Jefferson Co., Ohio

I have been researching the descendants of William and Eleanor Johnson/Johnston Chalfant off and on for a number of years. I recently found a name in my notes that I can't attach to anyone definite, but I'm sure she must be a member of this Jefferson County branch of Chalfants.

In the Jefferson Co., Ohio Probate Court Death Records, v. 1-3, 1867-1908, there is a little girl named Carrie B. Chalfant, 7 years old, who died 4 Nov. 1891 in Knox Twp. Her place of birth was also Knox Twp. She died of "dropsy of the chest".

I cannot find a Chalfant family living in that township in either the 1880 nor the 1900 Jefferson Co., Ohio Census.

Do any of you have any idea who her parents were?

I would also like to know more about Eleanor Johnson or Johnston above.

Thank you

My grandmother was Margaret Lee Ellen or L'ellen Chalfant, daughter of Levi Linton Chalfant, who was the son of William (1821), son of William and Eleanor Johnson Chalfant.

Thank you,
Annette Stacey
(801) 309-0827
annette_stacey@yahoo.com
