486 Pte William Cowie served with the 5th Dragoon Guards in the Crimea. He was married at the time, as he sent a remittance to his wife (who was not formally named). Though he was on duty the day of the Charge, he was not awarded a Balaclava Clasp which indicates he was probably doing duty somewhere away from the battlefield on that day. He did receive the Crimean Medal and Inkerman Clasp, and was certainly eligible for a Sebastopol Clasp, although I was unable to find evidence of this on the Medal Rolls as I believe that list has been lost.

John William Chalmers - Portsmouth, England relatives

I am looking for information on my Great-grandfather, John William Chalmers.I don't know much, except that he was born around 1900 in Portsmouth, England. He married Norah Olloman Gerrie Chalmers in 1938 and fathered two daughters: Shirley Chalmers Barnes in 1938, and June Chalmers Slocum in 1939. It is suspected that he may have had another family as well, and that he may have left some of his children with his brother in Portsmouth. However, I have no information as to who these children are or what his brother's name is. My grandmother has told me that she never met any of her father's family. If anyone has any information that may be helpful, I would really appreciate it!

The went on to have children, one of whom was Mary Shiel and I believe Lilias, Walter I and possibly another. If anyone has connections I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Janet,
Well, that will teach me for rattling off an email in a hurry and not checking all the facts! So now that I have a clearer picture in my mind, lets proceed.
I do have a family tree but not on Ancestry. If you could provide me with your email address I will include it, and the password with my next letter.
I have in front of me a letter of recomendation to my grandfather James Duncan Chalmers, b1892, from the Stevenston Co-operative Society Limited, Fullarton Place, dated may 10,1912. I am curious to know, is Fullarton Place still there? Was that part of Saltcoats? I have a picture from a postcard that was sent to my grandfather shortly after his arrival in Canada. It appears to be taken at the store where he worked. When I get your email address, I will forward it on to you.
As for my email address, I wonder if you cut and paste it to your address book, it may have picked up the 'period' at the end. Just a shot in the dark.
OK,enough for know, off to scan that picture. Do enjoy your trip at the end of the month, Kathleen mentioned your visit.

Regards, David.

Hi David The e mail rejected so I am sending my reply via this site

Great to hear from you Thanks for the message. Re you theory of which of the Chalmer’s descendants I am: you are off on a tangent but there is a bizarre twist to your assumption which I will explain later.

My birth name was Janet Morrison I was raised in Saltcoats & I am the daughter of Thomas Morrison & Alice Chalmers Shaw (b 1937)

Mum’s parents were Agnes Christie & Thomas Shaw (b 1909)

My Grandfather was born out of wedlock & his mother was Agnes Shaw (b 1890)

Agnes was the daughter of William Shaw & Jane (Jean / Jeanie) Chalmers sister of your James Cowper Chalmers.

Now for the twist I also made contact with Kathleen via ancestry.com earlier this year and we have had plenty of contact since then. My Husband David & I were already booked to take a trip to Australia & New Zealand at the end of August and will now be meeting (& staying with at times)all the Chalmers girls while we are on the Gold coast. As a child their father Hector had ill health & was dispatched to stay with my Great Great Grandmother in Saltcoats for a holiday

Hector made recordings of many of his childhood memories etc in one of which he reminisces about this holiday which was wonderful to hear

Do you have a tree on a.com I have one its Called Morrison family tree 2. I also have a more detailed tree on Genes Reunited. I have plenty of family related research (courtesy of 10 years of investigation) let me know if you are looking for any info in particular.

Look forward to hearing from you

Janet
Hi Janet.
It is nice to see that these message boards really work! James Cowper Chalmers was my great grandfather. He married Elizabeth Jessie Dunsmore, they had 6 boys, one of whom was my grandfather, James Duncan Chalmers, b1892 in Saltcoats, d1955 in Quebec. Nearly all came to Canada.I have many pictures of my grandfather and his brothers of which we have had to guess who was who.James married in 1916 to Blanche Bee Wilbur. They had 3 children one of whom was my mother - Dora, b1917, d2006. She married in 1942 and I was born in 1944. Presently I live with my wife, Carol in Shelburne, Ontario, Can.
Something tells me that I know who you are. So going out on a limb, I am going to say that you have 2 sisters, one I know lives in Brisbane Australia. Her name is Kathleen Chalmers, and your father was Hector Chalmers, son of Thomas Chalmers, brother to James Cowper Chalmers.
No, I have not been cyber snooping, Kathleen got in touch with me several months ago and we have exchanged a number of emails. She has also granted me access to her family web site on Ancestry.
So, if I am all wet on this, please excuse the assumption, ignore the above paragraph, and we can start all over in the next round!
In any event, please get in touch with me directly at dandcandrews@yahoo.ca.
Regards, David Andrews

According to the information on his death certificate, his parents were Alex and Mina MacKenzie. I'm guessing that Mina was short for Whilomina. I did find a marraige certificate for an Alex and Mina in Scotland. Mina's last name was "Black."

I know that my Mom, Winifred was only 5' tall and my Dad, Wilmer was only about 5'10".

Susan Riesmeyer Murray
Searching for the _____ CHALMERS who married Daisy DOBBINS when she was about age 26, about 1911. (1930 Census info)

Likely married in TN, MS or NC.

At time of 1920 census (Asheville, NC) when she had reverted to the DOBBINS surname.

But she used surname of CHALMERS in her 1926 marriage license to Chase P. AMBLER. (Am guessing legal questions forced her to use her legal name.)

Any clues appreciated!

Hi There

My name is Audrey Diane Chalmers (married name Oag). My Great Granddad was James Chalmers who moved to Blackheath, Hill of Forss, Caithness from Stronsay in the 1940s(?). In anycase, he had 2 sons and 2 daughters - Peter, Gordon, Jean and Barbara. My grandad was Peter, who is now sadly dead. Barbara is the only one who survives. As Stronsay is such a little island I'm sure that we are related. Chalmers, I think, is French. A lot of our ancestors were mercenaries who travelled abroad to fight. If you have any more information I'd be really glad to hear from you.

Many Thanks

Audrey
Charles Oscar Chalmers was my great-grandfather. His son was my grandfather Charles Milton Chalmers (1899-1957) and Milton's son was my father Charles Milton Chalmers, Jr. (1941-1987). I had the same problem finding a definite connection between my great-great-grandfather Charles and CC Chalmers in Smithfield, VA. The ages work out that CC could have been Charles' father, but I haven't been able to find any direct evidence of that online.

Re: Aberdeen Chalmers

My family on the maternal side came from Aberdeenshire, Scotland immigrating to Oregon from that county in 1868/9. My great-great grandfather's name was William Chalmers and his eldest son, Alexander Chalmers, was my great- grandfather (there were 6/7 children Alex was the eldest). The Chalmers family has a recorded history at the Washignton County Historic Society in Hillsboro, Oregon. They were founders of The Old Scotch Church in Washington County. The church has a website, so you can get more information there. My ancestors were breeders of Shorthorn cattle and Clydsdale horses in Scotland for over 200 years at their farm "Old What" situated on the Mains of Old What in Aberdeenshire and leased. They decided to move to the United States because they could own their own land. When they arrived in Oregon, they purchased a farm of around 1,000 acres from Colonel Cornelius and another of around 400 acres.

My great-great grandfather's brother James Chalmers was a missionary for the London Missionary Society and one of the first missionaries to China in the late 19th c. prior to Hong Kong becoming a leasehold of England. He was the first person to translate the bible into Chinese, one of the founders of the Anna Memorial Hospital (non-denominational-charity) in Hong Kong, son-in-law developed the Peak in Hong Kong and knighted by the Queen, Dr. Chalmers and his wife are buried in the Happy Valley Cemetary in Hong Kong, there is a plaque with his name on it at the Presp. Church in Hong Kong. I tell you of him because Hong Kong is close to your location and the given name your are researching. If you can get a copy of the book "William Chalmers" 1725 --- from the Washington County Historical Society, it may answer some questions for you as it has quite a bit of information and respective family trees in it. Sincerely yours, Alexandra Chalmers Clarke

James Chalmers, David Chalmers

Am seeking family tree information about the following family.

James Chalmers born circa 1830, married Jane Chalmers nee Galloway on 31 Dec 1867 in Glasgow Scotland. James was christened 4 Dec 1831 in Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland and his parents were William Chalmers and Helen nee Rae.
James and Jane's children were Annie born circa 1868, Thomas Galloway born 28 nov 1870, Agnes born circa 1873 and David born circa 1875. At the time of the 1881 census they lived at 31 Comely Park Street, Glasgow, Scotland. Thomas Galloway Chalmers emigrated to Rhodesia in the 1890s and he married Rachel nee Shaw and they had 3 children Cecil James born circa 1902, Jean ("Jennie") and Margaret Stuart (my paternal grandmother) born 25 may 1906. Margaret Stuart married my grandfather Francis Eric Kimberley. In about 1905 Thomas Galloway Chalmers had a possible cousin called James who lived at 175 Duke Street, Dennistown, Glasgow, Scotland with wife and child. No further details known. Thomas Galloway Chalmers also had cousins living in Bedford UK in the early 1900s by the names Valarie and Cynthia Chalmers. Annie Chalmers apparently emigrated to Canada. I know nothing about Agnes and David Chalmers. I would like to obtain any further family tree info from any descendants of these people mentioned. Thank you in advance for posting a response here and copying to cjakimus@yahoo.com
From the 1841 census at Frecen.org.uk:

Piece: SCT1841/218 Place: Longside -Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 2
Civil Parish: Longside Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 2 Page: 17
Address: Gowrie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
CHALMERS James M 50 Crofter Aberdeenshire
CHALMERS Jannet F 50 Aberdeenshire
CHALMERS Isabell F 13 Aberdeenshire
CHALMERS Adam M 8 Aberdeenshire

As Adam and Bathia were married in 1854 prior to statutory records being introduced in 1855, unless the OPR record of the marriage reveals more than the usual "Adam of this parish and Bathia of that" and New Zealand records of Adam's death don't mention parents you are out of luck.

There was a census taken in 1855 in Scotland, that has not been published, so it may be possible to learn something from that. I'll ask a friend who has access to that to see if it reveals anything.

Look to naming of Adams children. If first son name was James - that's positive. If you can find Bathia's birth and her parents names and the names appear in the family - I would assume Adam is son of James and Bathia.

John

Re: Margaret Chalmers - 1814 - Renfrewshire, Scotland

Hi Richard,

My guess would be that Margaret's parents were Colin Chalmers (or Chambers) and Agnes Baird and that she was Christened 11 Jun 1795, Low Church, Paisley.

It seems William and Margaret had at least 3 daughters. The eldeest one was Agnes. If they followed Scottish naming traditions this would mean that Margaret's mother was Agnes too.

I searched IGI for a Margaret Chalmers b. 1790 +/- 5 years and came up with the VERY likely one above. If Margaret lived on until after 1855 in Scotland, you should be able to find her death record which may be able to confirm her parents names.

John
