Re: FLORENCE CHAMBERLAND

I see the 1880 Census lists her birthplace as Alabama, about 1857. Also I see that there are no Chamberlain's (various spellings as listed below) listed in Lincoln Co., TN in 1860, 1870 or 1880.

- 1880 Census, District 18, Lincoln Co., TN, Columbus Mullins, p. 230B, #327/240, 18 Jun 1880, age 23, TN/TN/TN; Assena, age 21, AL/AL/Unknown, illiterate; Patrick B., age 1, TN/TN/TN; Virginia M., age 11/12, b. April, TN/TN/TN

It is unlikely, though possible, that her surname was originally spelled Chamberland. Where did you obtain the surnames you listed, of Chamblee, Shamby, Shamblee, Shamley? More likely her surname was Chamberlain, Chamberlin, Shamblen, Shamblin, Chamblin, Chamblen, etc. I searched my Census listings (1860 & 1870) in Alabama for these names, but don't find her listed there. I DID NOT search the Ancestry.com Census database for the surname spellings you listed - I'll leave this for you to do. Please contact me, James B. Parker, via Email, at jbparker@provide.net, if you wish to discuss this information.

Re: 1951
My father and I went fishing to a small town called Poltimore and rented a log cabin from a family called Chamberland. There was a small lake we fished that had mostly small & large mouth bass. Iwas only 11 at the time, but will never forget the experience. There was no refrigeration, so could only keep what we would eat. The Chamberlinds had some children. So, was always courious what happeded to that family.
Can anyone advise?

Re: Seeking relatives of Raymond L. Chamberland

I'm a Chamberlain (all spellings) genealogist who attempts to review and answer queries such as yours in Ancestry.com, GenForum and other places. I'm not in touch with this family, and not related to it either, but here is information from my research files that may be helpful, by identifying the names of Raymond's siblings, parents, etc. Raymond was born about May 1924, in Rhode Island, probably West Warwick Township, Kent Co., one of four known children of Joseph & Clair Chamberland and grandson of Octave & Lumina Chamberland, natives of Canada (probably Quebec). The following census record pertains:
- 1930 Census, West Warwick Town, Phenix Village, Joseph Chamberland, p. 123A, #10 Aberdeen St., #274/393, 15 Apr 1930, head, age 35, married age 24, $25, rents, has radio, butcher – meat merchant, CAN/CAN/CAN (all French), immigrated 1910, naturalized; Claire, wife, age 31, married age 21, CAN/CAN/CAN (all French), immigrated 1900, naturalized; Laurent, son, age 9, RI/CAN/CAN; Madeline, daughter, age 7, RI/CAN/CAN; Raymond, son, age 5 11/12, RI/CAN/CAN; Claire, daughter, age 4 8/12, RI/CAN/CAN

So, this identifies the family in 1930, and their place of residence at that time & his father's occupation. Probably the family can be traced in other records there after 1930, such as city directories, tax records, phone books and the like. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail and what else can be done via Email by yourself, from Italy or anywhere, to trace the family: James B. Parker, at jbparker@provide.net.

Octave CHAMBERLAND, born 1803

I have been looking for the birth record of Octave CHAMBERLAND, born 1803, for some time. He is the son of Charles CHAMBERLAND and Thérèse RIVARD.

I believe I have finally found it in the register for the parish of La Visitation, Pointe-du-Lac, St.-Maurice, Québec. It is dated 5 Oct. 1803, which closely matches his reported age of 75 at the time of his burial in St.-David-de-Yamaska on 1 Jul 1878.

His parents are the same as on his marriage record of 1 Aug 1831 at Louiseville, Maskinongé, to Felicité St.-YVES. The godmother appears to be his maternal grandmother Geneviève LAFONTAINE.

The quality of the original handwriting and scanned image is poor, but his full name appears to be Claude Charles Octave CHAMBERLAND. The family is recorded as being of Yamachiche parish.

My grandmother, still living, can vividly remember her and Mederic and i have heard many stories. I would love to get access to your GEDCOM file and i tried the website, unfortunately i dont understand French. Would you be able to email it directly to me at rdenesha@comcast.net.

I also have pictures of Mederic and Marie Louis Laforest as well as other Chamberland family members that i cannot identify.

Thank you

Ron Denesha

Re: Chamberland Relations

After two hours of searching, I've been able to identify the family involved, though not every name listed in the 25 Mar 1936 newspaper article whose image you posted. The family definitely comes from the village of St. Paul, Joliette Co., Quebec, which is located about 20km north of the St. Lawrence River, and about 60km directly north of Montreal. This is Joseph Mederic Chamberland, b. 13 Aug 1865, St Paul de Joliette, Quebec, Canada, d. 18 Jan 1946, Holyoke, Hampden Co., MA, who married c1892, Marie Louise LaForest, b. 8 Oct 1870, St Paul Ermite, Quebec, Canada, d. 29 Dec 1950, South Hadley, MA, with 2 children listed for them:
- Marie Irene Josephine Chamberland, b. 15 Mar 1903, d. 17 Oct 1987, Holyoke, Hampden Co., MA, wife of Thomas Louise Gregoire
- Paul Edward Chamberland, b. 18 Jul 1907, St. Paul de Joliette, Quebec, d. 10 Oct 1994, Holyoke, Hampden Co., MA, whose first? wife was Estelle L. Crete, and whose other wife, if this is to be believed(?!), was his sister Irene, by whom they had a daughter Theresa Mary, b. 23 Apr 1928.
Most of this information comes from sn Ancestry.com Family Tree online, which traces the ancestry back a couple of generations, then makes an incorrect connection with one of the descendants of a pioneer ancestor, Simon Chamberland of Quebec - so beware - problems here!
1930 Census data as follows:

- 1930 Census, 55 Summer St., Holyoke Ward 1, Hampden Co., MA, p. 62A, #50/151, 14 Apr 1930, Mederic [listed as Medeine] Chamberlane, head, age 65, married age 27, $16, carpenter - construction co., rents, doesn't own a radio, CAN/CAN/CAN(all French); Laforest, wife, age 59, married age 21, CAN/CAN/CAN(all French); Irene, daughter, single, age 27, spinner - cotten mill, CAN/CAN/CAN(all French); Paul, son, single, age 22, paper maker - paper mill, CAN/CAN/CAN(all French); also Stella Crete, boarder, single, age 20, winder - thread mill, CAN(French)/CAN(French)/MI

I've maintained a complete listing here of all 1881 Census for all Chamberlain/lin/lands throughout Canada, and I see that there are 9 different listings in Ste. Paul, Joliette, Quebec, one of which matches one of the twins Baptiste and Joseph:

- 1881 Census, Ste. Paul, Joliette, Quebec, Canada, J. Baptiste Chamberlain, p. 040, dist. 87C, household #226, male, age 21, domestique; listed in household of Joseph Rivais, widowed, age 73, cultivateur; Alfrid, age 27, cultivateur; Joseph, age 1; William, age 1, b. Jul 9/12; also Matilde Prudhomme, age 20 (prob. wife of Joseph Rivais] - all ethnic French, Catholique, b. QUE

But I haven't determined how the twins are related to Joseph Mederic - probably cousins, I suppose. Anyway, more can be determined from other Canadian Census data, no doubt. And, if you will track down the person who sumitted the Ancestry.com listing recently, you will no doubt be able to find living descendants in the Holyoke, MA, vicinity, and elsewhere. For instance, the Gregoire children, whose names are listed, lived there in Holyoke and several of them died just recently. Theresa May Chamberland married Grover Cleveland Twiss, with several children (names withheld), and this couple died just recently in Granby, MA.
The earliest known ancestor is Joseph Chamberland, b. 1830, Ste. Paul de Joliette, Quebec, who married Esther Racette, 24 Oct 1870, St. Thomas, Joliette, which is located a couple of miles east of St. Paul. Perhaps you or someone else can help me identify his parents there.
Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail, or if you can share additional information with me, as you proceed, for my research files, with regard to this interesting family.
Thank you for the info. on Esther Clément's second marriage
i have access to the Legal church records which tell me that Esther's parents were Thomas Damase Clément & Délia Bessette.
Unfortunately the Clément info is marked private on the GenCircles site. I'm still looking for some of Esther's descendants--she's my great-aunt.

Sorry, Martin William b. 08/18/1892 d. 10/18/1965 married to Martha Berger is John's son w/ Clara Knowlton, not father.

We've received a copy of Martin's death certificate.

Tilitha was John's 3rd wife (that we know of).

Your posting provides direction to access considerable census information for this family, including the proof that John T. is the brother of Virginia, hence the son of Jonathan J. Chamberland and his wife Martha/Martthey (-?-). I'm very pleased to see this new and revealing information, and have updated my records for this family accordingly. Good for you! Regarding Jonathan's identity, the 1880 census says he was 32, born TN, parents birth place unknown; the 1900 census lists his age as 49, b. April 1851, birthplace TN, parents both born France; and the 1910 census lists his age as 53, birth place LA, parents birth places unknown. I have no way of knowing which is correct, but the following census data match well, and perhaps pertain:
- 1860 Census, New Orleans Ward 8, Orleans Parish, LA, J. Chemilin, p. 575, #1966/2942, 30 Jul 1860, age 32, clerk, b. FRA? [looks like H. Rhin Fl]; John, age 8, attends school, b. New Orleans, LA; Mary, age 5, b. New Orleans, LA; also J. Delen Jr., male, age 42, b. New Orleans; Leraphin? Gallin or Gallier, female, age 80, b. Italy?; another family also listed at this address, headed by L. Aupe, age 33, b. Leine or Seine?, France or Florence?
For whatever it is worth, Jonathan's sons Henry Harrison Chamberlain and John T. Chamberland both in 1920 listed their father's birth place as France, but Virginia lists his birthplace as Missouri.
It would be helpful if someone could locate a death record for Jonathan (about 1954, Oregon), and an 1870 census listing for him. It would also be appropriate to obtain a DNA test from a living male descendant carrying the surname of Chamberland or Chamberlain, if this has not already been done, for comparison with other families within the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society DNA study. Please contact me via Email, if you wish, to discuss this information.
