My mother, Gertrude Louise Griswold (Billie Lou) was a student at Berea College and became engaged to H.B. in the late 1920's when they were in college together. I have several photographs of H.B. and my mother and my grandparents, Katherine and Glenn Griswold (Madison, Ohio) that were taken in the studio of H.B.'s family business.
I also have a few camera photos. I am not certain of the reason they broke their engagement; my mother maintained a part of her heart forever for H.B. even though her marriage to my father was a true love for 61 years until her death in 1996. My name is Carole Jean McLaughlin Fowler and I live in Morganton, North Carolina. Our oldest son lives in Jefferson, Georgia with his family.
If you would like any of the copies of the photos I have, I would be happy to e-mail them to you.
Sincerely, Carole Fowler

Your comments and my replies. Hope they help a little.

"I also discovered that the research comes to a grinding screeching hault in 1715 with Jacob Chamblee"

It screeches to a halt because it's absolutely false info. I think you have gotten a hold of some bad stuff with out basis in fact. I know this family cold in the U.S. and NO Chamblee goes back to 1715 on paper. People have really confused Jacob Chamblee's line and the misinformation is like a speed train out of control, and I would suspect that it is out of control because they are just merging files and not actually reproving or proving things.

"see that different folks have connected him with parents with a different name - in Virginia - but that same individual is noted to have lived in Ireland and emigrated to America sometime around 1734(?)."

Those "different folks" are guessing. I have looked at the trees at ancestry.com. 99% are a big mess.

We have a private Chamblee/Chamlee website with hundreds of photos and information all free. Our aim is to help clarify the bad information and help people so they don't have to recreate the wheel.

We do have a Chamblee/Chamlee/Shamley at all DNA study going on right now. Because of that we know we are NOT connected to the Chumbley/Chumley surnames in the U.S. Horrah for that.

"He appears to have married an Elizabeth Welch who in turn bore him Robert Chamblee b. 1738, d. 1819, robert being first of Bertie N. C. and later dying in Wake, North Carolina."

Robert of Wake Co Nc had no connection with the fabricated "Elizabeth Welch". There is no such person as Ms. Welch being connected to ANY Chamblee/Chamlee/Shamley record.

Rocky's site is correct. I happen to know that research.

The Chamblees in Mississippi were originally from NC of course. There were a few different migratory groups leaving from the Wake Co Nc area to Mississippi. One is very easy to track and the other a killer.

How may I help you? I'd love to.

D. Stoddard

Jacob Chamblee

I am a genealogy hobbyist like many here. I began a search for a friend of mine about her mother's people - the Chamblee family of the Mississipi, previously of the Carolinas. I soon found that the name had changed many times. I also discovered that the research comes to a grinding screeching hault in 1715 with Jacob Chamblee. I see that different folks have connected him with parents with a different name - in Virginia - but that same individual is noted to have lived in Ireland and emigrated to America sometime around 1734(?). Does anyone - has anyone seen more definitive information? I have nothing else about his parents. He appears to have married an Elizabeth Welch who in turn bore him Robert Chamblee b. 1738, d. 1819, rober being first of Bertie N. C. and later dying in Wake, North Carolina. Please note some conjecture and leads may be noteworthy from http://www.rockystrickland.com/chamblee.htm.

A family genealogy of the South Carolina family is in the Anderson County Library, titled "Burriss Family Genealogy". It was published in 1990, from information that had been gathered from the late 19th century up to 1990. A committee was formed to raise money to have it published, in the 1940's, but WWII interrupted the process. It contains just short of 1000 pages, and starts with the seven children of Joshua Boroughs (Burriss) and Sarah Mary Chamblee.

I've always thought the estimated birth date for Joshua Burris was way too early considering the ages of his children and some of the court records. I pulled up every record citation I could get in Bertie and Hertford Counties at the NC Archives years ago to aid age estimations, etc. for the Chamblee tribe.

It would be important for the Burris tribe to do the same. There are some early written and documented books on the Burris' in NC, I remember seeing a few at the Family History Library in Salt Lake years ago. This would help your search, but clearly if you find initial land deeds and consider the legal age requirement (see Helen Leary's book on the laws of NC), it will help

Can you help me understand where the date for Joshua of 1724 is coming from?

>>
We know we have a NC connection, but don't have the historical information to prove it.<<

Here are just a few things I picked up on Joshua in NC:

1768
"In Nov 1768, Hertford Co NC an account of the letter of adm granted for the estate of James Burress dec'd. Joshua, Esther and Joshua Burress, (I do not know if the two Joshuas are a repetition or if two of the name are mentioned)" (Ethel Updike in her book, p 1)

26 Sept 1772, Bertie Co NC
Joshua Burress and Sarah his wife of Bertie Co NC sold 100 a. adj John Berry corner to Joshua Burress corner, wit: John Spreight, Robert Summer and Thomas Smith. (EU)

14 Feb 1776
Joshua Burress of Martin Co NC, a planter sold 420 a called "Pellmell" adj George Mitchell and Jonathan Miller. Wit: Walter William Wynn, Thomas West Whitnall (EU)

29 Nov 1779
Joshua Burress of Anson Co NC sold 100 a on Pee Dee River and Jones Cr adj William Ratcliff and Daniel Murphy. (Order Book 1 p. Bertie Co Deek Bk M, p 255, 277, Book 4 p 22)

1788, Edgecome Co NC
Sarah Burros was wife of Joshua Burros Nov 28, 1788. (Deed Bk 5, 302)

Important to know at this point that there was a massive migration to the Old Pendelton Co (Anderson), SC area bringing many Chamblees, cousins, nephews, uncles and neighbors together. Reading the early census enumerations in Anderson Co SC is like a Who's Who of Wake Co NC earlier.

1797 Joshua Burris "planter" purchased 450 acres of land on waters of Big Generostee Creek; 150 pounds sterling paid for this property. (The Chamlee/Chamblee folk purchased land on Big Generostee as well. Neighbors migrated together and lived together for safety and familiarity)

You could easily have proven everything if Hertford Co, NC courthouse had not burned twice, once by arson. Robert Chamblee himself (b. 1738ish) petitioned for Bertie County to be split because of the distance. Since the Burris and Chamblees seem to have lived close to each other in the Bertie Co NC area, the Burris' tribed lived on the Hertford Co NC line I would assume. I have not dug up deeds or NC land grants on the Burris people. One day I will

As far as the relationship of Joshua Burris' wife to the Chamblee tribe, NOBODY knows. Never proven. We don't have a clue how she figures in and it's all due to record destruction in NC probably.

D. Stoddard, Chamblee Family Organization

The couple, Joshua Boroughs (also spelled Burriss or Burress), and Sarah Mary Chamblee, came from North Carolina. We show Joshua's birth year as 1724; died 4 Feb 1804. Sarah Mary Chamblee, born; abt 1755, died abt 1806. Our information indicates all of their children except one, were born in North Carolina. The first child, Elizabeth Margaret b. abt 1768, Elisha b. 1774, James b.1775, Sarah Mary b.1778, John b.1779,Thomas b.1782, and then a South Carolina birth, Nancy, in 1784 in 96 District, SC (Anderson County). I have never been able to connect who and where the North Carolina family were. It seems most NC Boroughs use the spelling "Boroughs", which we believe was how Joshua's surname was spelled. Most up-state SC Boroughs, use the surname Burriss, Burress and much less use Boroughs, Burroughs. My line of the family uses "Boroughs" and we descend from James , the third child of Joshua & Sarah. The family has had extensive information on the family from earliest days in up-state SC and almost nothing prior to South Carolina.

We know we have a NC connection, but don't have the historical information to prove it.

I put the estimated birth date of Joshua Burris based on the proven earliest citation I have found in records as 1749-1750ish. Matches well with the children's ages, too.

Most people don't know that Joshua and his wife were in Bertie/Hertford Co NC before migrating eventually to SC.

26 Sept 1772, Bertie Co NC
Joshua Burress and Sarah his wife of Bertie Co NC sold 100 a. adj John Berry corner to Joshua Burress corner, wit: John Spreight, Robert Summer and Thomas Smith.

Your bible record is interesting. This record also filed in Hertford County (split from Bertie Co, but Hertford Co courthouse burned twice and we lost all early records on Chambless and Burris folk):

"In Nov 1768, Hertford Co NC an account of the letter of adm granted for the estate of James Burress dec'd. Joshua, Esther and Joshua Burress, (I do not know if the two Joshuas are a repetition or if two of the name are mentioned)"

Does this fit in with your thoughts about the bible record you have at all?
Attention Chamblee, Chambley, Chambly, Chamlee, Shamblee, Shambly, Shamlee, Shamley researchers:

There is a DNA project underway for the above listed surnames at http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Chamblee. Our goal is to find a common link between these families and prove relationships between the earliest known ancestors with these surnames. If you are a man with one of these last names, you are eligible to take a yDNA test. We recommend taking at least a 37 marker test, although 67 would be more informative. Women are encouraged to solicit their fathers, brothers, uncles, or cousins to take the test! Donations may also be made to the project through FTDNA http://www.familytreedna.com and would be greatly appreciated.

For more information on this project, please contact me or reply to this message.
I am also looking for Nicholas Reynolds and his wife Rachel. I am a descendant of James W. Reynolds and his wife who lived in Lauderdale County, TN. I would like to hear from you. I hired a genealogist to find material in N. C. for me, but she wasn't very successful. I will be glad, however, to share any info that I have with you.

Actually, Jacob Chamlee served in the Rev War and was awarded a military warrant for acreage in TN. He lived there awhile per land records then migrated down to SC to join other relatives.

There is no proof that 6 brothers (can anyone name the "six brothers"?) came from Scotland to America. No ship's records, no records in Scotland, no records in early Virginia, none to date have ever been found. If there is a new source that has been missed, we would love to know.

Thank you.

Probably are speaking of grandchild of Zadock Chamblee, named Zadock D.L. Chamblee marr Margaret E. Warnock. This Zadock lived ca 1833-1880/1890 in SC. Probably did not work out the line so jumped at the first Zadock they saw.

Be necessary to know what the service record actually said to determine. years ago I made a list of all Chamblees (all spellings) and their service records. It's moot now, all records are easily available online.

I noticed in many trees that have Zadoc Chamblee (b. 1775 - d. 1832) there is a Civil War Service Record attached. This would not be possible seeing that this particular Zadoc died in 1832. Even if he was still living, he would have been about 85 years old in 1860.

The Zadoc in the Civil War must be some relation - grandson? greatgrandson?

Her first marriage was to my Grandfather. She left my Grandfather with two sons. One of which is my father. She then remarried to a Waldrop.
I have worked my way from the beginning, from myself to my father and so on... It seems that Jacob Chamblee 1913 to 1979 from Cass County Texas was my Grandfather. His Father was Sanvandus V. Chamblee 1878 to 1960 Born in Louisiana, Married to Julia Unknown, born 1885 to 1970 in Texas. previous generation was Alex D. Chamblee born 1856 and Married to Chairay Unknown, born 1860 both from Louisiana. Yes, I am stuck. I have had time to go over and over my records and those are what I believe them to be.

Thank you for any help you can render
lba2us@yahoo.com

We are not sure where the Chamblee/Chamlee/Chamley et all clan lived in Virginia. Some records point to Prince George Co (records burned in War of 1812). All I know is that we have tracked positively the clan to early Bertie Co NC before 1740.

You need to carefully go backwards one step at a time (one generation at a time). If you skip a generation when things get exciting you could lose the trail very easily. The Chamblee/Shambley et al families are no different than any other--very complicated and filled with detours and skeletons.

If your family is down in Texas I would assume they took the migration trail down from Wake Co NC to old Pendelton Co NC (now Anderson). From there they migrated into Georgia and just kept coming West, with a few migrating up to Alabama (though a large group left Wake Co NC and went to the Blount Co AL area in the early 1800's.

When you get to the roadblock of slavery, (before the Civil War) let me know, perhaps I can help. Some of the early Chamblees/Chamlees had slaves and some did not. Go back one step at a time reverifying ALL information. Look at all lines.
