Re: Chambless Family of Madison County, Alabama

I believe I can help you toward gaining info concerning Stephen Chambliss and his sister Nancy. Nancy Chambliss was one of my ggg grandmothers. She, her brother Stephen, and 3-4 other siblings were born near the Pee Dee River, Dovesville area, in Darlington Co., AL. Their parents were Virginians. They were John Chambliss and Lucy Rochelle Williams. John's first wife had died. Around 1800, 3-4 Chambliss brothers moved to the Huntsville, AL area. My ggg grandfather, John Roark, Jr. (1773, NC or VA) m. Nancy Chambliss. Don't know if they met in SC or Alabama. They had seven children. The first one, William M. Roark was born in old Smith Co., TN in 1803 when Smith Co. was huge.
Next were Frances C., my gg grandfather Russel, Napoleon B., Lucinda, John "A.J", and Katherine "Kit". Frances was m to Whitnel S. Randolph, stayed when John moved five of his children to Coahuila y Tejas during the fall of 1834.
Lucinda stayed w/Frances and her family, but John, his wife Nancy Chambliss, and five children made the trip. In early 1836, Napoleon B. died. Nancy Chambliss Roark died in 1837.
William M., Russel, and John "A.J." served in the Texas Militia in the fight for Texas Independence.
Stephen Chambliss did very well financially in Madison Co., AAL. He raised several children by himself. His wife, who he m. in 1810 Amy Ann McCartney died when Stephen, Jr. was young. I have a lot more concerning this family since it is my line. Would like to hear from you.
Doug Roark - dougroark@att.net

Re: Chambless surname

Hi Robin,

To you and everyone out there... the name is Most likely French but it may also be English. Names are very old things unless someone makes up a new one. What I mean is that the native tounge of places such as, and specifically, Ireland and Scotland, are of Gaelic origin. Names are never translated they are always translitterated. In other words, when we attempt to say a foreign name in our own tounge, we attepmt to make it sound as close to the original as possible. A good example of this is my name..."Matthew" which is of Hebrew origin and in Hebrew is spelled and pronounced "Matit'yahu", thus in English we get Matthew. Remember this rule when you are researching names..always translitterate, never translate. As for our last name of Chambless, it is probably from Burgundy, France and its dirivatives are many...e.g. Chamblis, Chambliss, Chambly, Chamblys, Chambless, Chambles.
The following are two excerpts from Ancestry .com....

1)Chambless
"English: unexplained; perhaps a variant of Chambers. Compare Chambliss."

and when you click on "Chambers" you get this..

2)Chambers
English: occupational name for someone who was employed in the private living quarters of his master, rather than in the public halls of the manor. The name represents a genitive or plural form of Middle English cha(u)mbre ‘chamber’, ‘room’ (Latin camera), and is synonymous in origin with Chamberlain, but as that office rose in the social scale, this term remained reserved for more humble servants of the bedchamber.

My assumtion is that our name is derived from Chanbers but implies the lack thereof of a chamber. Or in other words, someone who is no longer a servant or is without a "master." Note however, this does not imply slavery, it implies willing and trusted service, much like a butler today.

If anyone wants to get in touch with me my email is cmdrabbadon@yahoo.com and for the record, my line of Chambless is as follows: (starting with the oldest)

William C. and Mary Polly Huckabee b.1803 d?

James H.(Doc_ and Alleny Sivil Slocumb b.1836 d.1910

William Jesse and Lela Viola Miller b 1866 d.1908

Guy and Vera Long b 1895 d?

Guy II and Ruth McCurdy b 1921 d 1986

Joel Miller (div Helen Marie Wilson) Living

Matthew Joel and Shannon Renee' Gilliand Living

Ok here is what I have.

John J Chambless 1862-1927 married Sallie Blair 1862-1954. Their children: Lizzie Chambless Carnley m. Greenbury Carnley, Walter G. Chambless Oct.1, 1887 -1965 m. Daisy Sims 1885-1930. Walter remarried Cleone Cotton Jackson 1903-1990. Luana Chambless Phillips 1898-1939 m. Leonard Fay Phillips 1898-1952. Etta Chambless Burke died 1922 m. JD Burke. Lacy Chambelss Martin died 1911 m. Wiley Martin. Dewwy Chambless 1905-1991 m. Euna Vae Rhodes. Nealie Chambless Scofield 1895-1961 m. C.O. Scofield. Ollie Chambless 1895-1972 m. Exa Dollars. Coralee Chambless Phillips 1900-1979 m. Robert Phillips 1895-1959.

I obtained the above info. from my late granny Sara Chambless wife of Eldrich who lives in Opp. Walters children (you probably have this already) Eldrich Chambless born 8/31/15, John Leland Chambless 5-8-?, Aubid Lee Chambless Lawrence 12-31-?, Marie Chambless Collier. If you have the dates I am missing would you please provide them.

I also have a listing someone sene me 10 years ago that has a little more info. but I have not been able to validate...just haven't had time. However, in this listing she has John J. Chambless' parents as being a Jim Chambers (Chambless) who died before 1920 and married a Martha J. born about 1847. Their children Benjamin 'Ben', John J., George H., Jenny, and Jerry. I would be more than happy to provide you with this info. however it is hard copy and I would have to mail it.

Hope this helps.

Roger Chambless

Need Help finding info on Wm Jos Chambless

Can anyone help? I seem to have hit a brick wall. My grandfather was William Joseph Chambless b.1883 in MO. Marriage databases list his mother (Sarah Fodge) as married to an A.T. Chambless. I can find William and his mother in the 1910 Census but it lists Sarah as widowed and where the info for "father" should be it simply states "Can't Find". I cannot seem to tie Wm Jos to any of the Chamblesses I can find. I'm sure the info is there somewhere - I'm just not looking in the right spots. Thanks in advance for any info. Eva

Near William Andrews' grave is a headstone that says "Matilda R. 2/28/1834 - 4/9/1905 Wife of Nathan Chambless". I would like to know if anyone knows who Matilda & Nathan were.....were they William Andrews' parents? He just passed away in Warren, Michigan (where he lived from 1953) on July 13, 2005. I have a 15 year old son, William Grady III, and he is known as "Grady".
