I am reasonably certain Buchanan was a descendant of one of the sons of Peter Chambliss who migrated to the Fayette area about 1804. Can you give me the date of the marriage of Buchanan Chambliss and Emily Nichols?

Geneac

See my messages to you on the Ancestry message board atop your Ancestry home page. Also, if you have not done so, you might consider checking with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in Washington, D.C., for a pension record for your William Thomas Chambliss. He was a Civil War casualty with dependents; therefore, his family may have applied for a pension. If so, the sworn affidavit accompanying the application may contain the information about his parents which you desire.

I also strongly suggest that land deeds in Pope County, Illinois (grantors and grantees), in the name of Chambliss be reviewed for the period from about 1820 to 1865. Sometimes these land deeds are very revealing with respect to how farmers came by their land.

Records in Pope County might also reveal further information not available upon the internet. The county clerk in Pope County has marriage and land records from 1816, probate records (wills and estate settlements) from 1816, Civil War militia rolls. Sometimes, the County Clerk can identify a local person willing to do a review of records for a fee.

You can contact the Pope County Clerk at:

Pope County
P. O. Box 216
Galconda, Illinois 62938-0216
618-683-4466

If you go to Pope County, check the county library for genealogical records.

Good luck with your search.

I checked my records and found no William as a sibling to the Joel Chambliss mentioned in my message. I also checked the siblings of his father, Soloman Chambliss, as your William was a generation earlier than Joel. Again, I found no William. I must add that I am not an experienced Chambliss family historian and only reviewed the records for Joel Chambliss and his parents which I had encountered during my research. I wish that I could have been more forthcoming.

Do you know if Joel had a brother or uncle by the name of William? I have been searching for Williams family for years. William was born in Illinois in 1824 and died in the Civil War in 1863. He married and lived in Pope County Illinois.

Joel Chambliss, 1846-1864

Joel Chambliss and Mary Bailey had a son named Robert Chambliss [1788 NC - 1829 KY]; Robert married Ruth Bledsoe and they had the following issue: Roberta, Soloman B. who married Elizabeth Susan Keenan, Robert B., Henry, and Eliza Jane.

Soloman B. Chambliss and Elizabeth, his wife, had the following issue: Margaret, Joel H., Mary J., Thomas J., Robert B., Sarah E., Roberta J., and James T. Chambliss. Soloman's will was recorded in Breckinridge County, Kentucky.

Joel Chambliss, son of Soloman and Elizabeth, was born in 1846 in Clay County, Illinois. He enlisted in the United States Army, Company C, 136th Illinois Infantry, on June 1, 1864, while living at Olney, Illinois. He died while in service to his country during the Civil War; the place of death was Columbus, Kentucky, and he died on July 8, 1864. This military unit was never in battle and was used primarily for garrison duty with occasional scouting missions and raids against guerrillas. Note: The source of this information incorrectly listed Joel H. Chambliss's surname as "Chamblens." See: "Roster of Company C 136th Illinois Infantry," located at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcivilw/rl55/136-c-in.htm p. l.

Of interest was the following: Columbus, Kentucky, was of some significance during the early stages of the Civil War. Both Union and Confederate forces wanted to control the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. A chain barrier had been built across the Mississippi River at Columbus in Hickman County, Kentucky. After General Grant defeated the Rebels at both Fort Donelson and at Pittsburgh Landing/Shilo on the Tennessee River, the chain across the Mississippi River at Columbus was no longer needed. This was where Joel Chambliss, died.

The garrison and guerrilla missions of Joel's unit may have been much more significant than was reflected in the record. The guerrillas were busy in Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and Missouri.Quantrell, Davison, Sue Munday, and Magruder and other raiders robbed banks, burned court houses, stole horses, chickens, hogs, and other animals. They also treated women with disrespect. Quantrell was finally caught and hanged.Davison was shot by Home Guards near Patesville, Kentucky. Sue Munday (Jerome Clark)was caught near Webster, Breckinridge County, Kentucky, and hanged in Louisville. None of these raiders were associated with a military unit. Davison, who had been a Capt. in the 17th Kentucky Infantry (USA), burned the courthouses at Hardinsburg and Owensboro, Kentucky. He killed any federal soldier he could find. He had resigned his commission after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and became a rebel outlaw. Davison had been raised near Hawesville in Hancock County, Kentucky, where his family lived in the Skillman Bottoms.

After Joel H. Chambliss died at Columbus, Kentucky, his remains were taken to his home where he was buried in the Golden Cemetery near Louisville, Clay County, Illinois. His parents were also buried nearby in the same cemetery.

I was grateful to Wayne Meador for his research concerning the bands of guerrillas which was reported herein.

I know that there is a town in England called Pirton. Other than that, I've not found anything on Robert or a Joanne.

William Chambliss - b. VA about 1831 or 1833

I am looking for the father of Robert Littleton Chambliss born 1862 in Tennessee. He is listed on the 1870 census with William S. Chambliss born about 1831 in Virginia (I am assuming for now this is Roberts Father). The 1860 census list him as William H. (posibly A.) Chambliss born about 1833 in Virginia and married to a Henrieta. In both census he lived in Coahoma County, Mississippi. It is possible they are not the same William Chambliss. Does anyone have any information on William Chambliss? Thanks.

Her parents were born in Tennessee. She is listed in 1910 census as divorced, living in Nevada, Colin, Texas. She had 9 children, one died. My grandfather, her youngest son, died in Texas when I was about 10.
Chamblisses Huguenots?

Several unconfirmed statements that the Chambliss family is of (French) Huguenot descent have surfaced. I am trying to verify this assertion. The earliest Chambliss I have found is Robert Chamniss (sic) who was born in 1603 in France, immigrated to Warwickshire, England, in about 1622, and ended up in Virginia with son John Chamnes (sic) in 1652. Does anyone have proof that the family was Huguenot in origin?

George Keist & Fern Van Dyke Keist marriage certificate ~ Looking for family to claim

I have an original marriage certificate for George N. Keist of New Berlin, Illinois and Miss Fern Van Dyke of Kewanee, Illinois. They were married in University City, Missouri on the 14th of June 1942 by Pastor Albert J. Korris, Bethel Lutheran Church. This document was recorded by the county and stamped on reversed side with book and page numbers and officially signed by the registrar. I found it at an old antique shop in Illinois. They said that when photos and other documents don't sell, they throw them away. They were getting ready to do just that. The Keist family is from Missouri and Kewanee Illinois areas. This is a true original certificate with raised seal of the church - all in original ink. I bought it with a mission to find its' rightful owners. I am searching for the family in Missouri and Illinois with this last name who may be the rightful owners. My only intention is to re-coup what I paid for them so they can return home where they belong. I did not want them to go into the trash, as I know what it means from my own searching what finding lost family photos, wills, marriage certificates means. Some appear to be wedding or anniversary photos. Starting my own search really has made me addicted and anytime I come across labeled photos or documents from now on, I am grabbing them to find their true owners. Family photos alone are treasures, but this is not my family treasure and may be yours. Anyone has any info, please contact me at calmquills@gmail.com. Thank you

Gladys Chambliss Baby photo I have found...Need to find family it belongs to

I have a baby photo of this person. I found it at an old antique shop in Illinois. They said that when photos don't sell that they throw them away. They were getting ready to do just that. This Gladys I researched and is named Gladys Elizabeth Chambliss of Davenport Iowa born 1909 to father Elwood born 1874 in Virginia and mother Elizabeth Cordelia Johnson born Sep 24, 1987 in Wales. They were married Dec 29, 1897. This is a true infant photo in what looks to be a christening dress possibly. This photo is very old but in great condition. This baby was so cute I couldn't see her thrown away. I bought it with a mission to find its' rightful owners. I am searching for the family in Iowa and Illinois with this last name who may be the rightful owners. My only intention is to re-coup what I paid for them so they can return home where they belong. I did not want them to go into the trash, and I know what it means from my own searching what finding lost family photos means. Some appear to be wedding or anniversary photos.
My GGmother was a Chambliss, but they were all in GA in the 1800's until after the War, when some went to AL, TX, MS, etc. Don't know of a TN or KY connection, so must be a different group. My Andrew's father was Jesse. They were all in Sumter Co. GA from 1830's till after the War.

Ray Faircloth from Texas

The death of Brigadier General John R. Chambliss-Civil War.

I am not of the family just a helper and I thought some one would like to have this info.
I have many more stories like this at my web site, come over and take a look you may find something you well like?

Dennis Segelquist
Civilian & Military Surname Searcher
http://www.civilwarthosesurnames.blogspot.com

Brigadier-General Chamliss, 1864.

During this truce we delivered to the enemy the body of Brigadier-General Chamliss, of the rebel service, who, as before stated in these notes, was killed at Deep Creek, on Charles City road, on the 16th instant. His remains had been buried by our soldiers near the "Potteries" on the evening of the 16th and were taken out of the grave to-day to be given to his people. So that his family might know where he was buried hereafter, I had made the following notes as to his place of burial at the "Potteries:"

Brigadier General John R. Chambliss (rebel service) buried at "Potteries" where New Market road crosses Bailey's Creek. His gave is directly in front of the house (hotel) about thirty feet from the road; ten feet from the corner of the icehouse. He was killed on the 16th of August near Deep Creek on the Charles City road. Head-board at his grave marked as follows: Brigadier General John R. Chambliss, C. S. Army, killed in battle August 16, 1864, buried by Third Brigade, Third Division, Second Army Corps.
Hi Karen -

If Nancy Chambliss (b. 1782, according to Roark Records) is not a part of that particular family, then neither is Stephen Chambliss who m. Amy McCartney 1810 in Madison Co., Alabama. The fact that Lucinda Roark went home with cousin Joel H. Chambliss, and Lucinda's mentioning Elizabeth, Nancy (a daughter of Stephen's), and others listed in most Chambliss Records is good enough for me. Sure, Nancy may have been married before, adopted, or etc. So could many of the others. Karen, if the truth were known, there are a lot of 1/2 sister, cousins, and others in records. Also, not trying to be tacky, but some children were fathered out of wedlock while a couple was married. How do we document that? It sure happens.
John Roark (1773, NC) owned land on both sides of the line dividing TN and AL. I have deed copies of such. The boundary changed or wasn't very clear before these areas became states. John paid taxes in AL (Jackson Co. and Madison Co.). Stephen Chambliss raised his family in Madison Co. after many of his siblings moved to Marshall Co. area, AL back when Alabama was a part of the Mississippi Territory, Chickasaw Nation.
I'm sorry you feel this way about Nancy Chambliss. If you think that all of your data is totally documented on your site, then you must be very naive. I'm sorry I feel that way but I do. There is no database of family trees that is not filled with errors. Women were touchy abt. their age. They often recorded different birth dates for themselves in Bibles. So, just because something has been recorded by a family member in the Bible doesn't mean it is 100% accurate.
We'll consider the matter closed. Not knowing actual facts, and not having personally met Nancy Chambliss, I will continue to leave her as is in my records. I have a year of birth and a date of death for Nancy. John Chambliss' daughter, Mary, from Darlington Co., SC has neither. Sorry I feel this way but I do. Besides, it doesn't make a rat's behind one way of the other. Thank you for your time.
Doug Roark

Doug -

I have reviewed the documents and letter you mailed to me for assistance with proving the surname of Nancy who married John Roark.

You formed a theory this Nancy is somehow a descendant of a Chambliss who lived in the same areas. The Nancy, daughter of Stephen and Ann, we discussed was born after John Roark was married. I find no evidence that any other child of that marriage is the Nancy who married your ancestor John Roark. I find no evidence any child of a John Chambliss and either Lucy Williams, or Sarah Lee, had a child that fits the theory.

Many times first and second cousins have the same given names. It occurs in most families and certainly does cause confusion. Neighbors possibly used the same or similar given names for their children. I have seen the surname of a good friend/neighbor used as the given or middle name of a child to honor that friendship.

The Nancy who married John Roark might have been previously married to a Chambliss. Or, she might have been adopted by a Chambliss. She also might have never been a Chambliss. The theories are endless. The evidence you provided only proves the given name Nancy.

I will put your documents in my a "Chambliss Puzzles" file and review it from time to time. It might be a good idea for you to look for a Roark family Bible and follow their history for clues as to the surname of Nancy who married John Roark.

I only do Pro Bono research for Chambliss lines and then when I have the time.

Best of luck. Karen Chambliss Abraham in California

P.S. My email to the address you provided in your letter to me (dougroark@att.com) was returned as not valid.
Re: Chambliss Genealogy

I am a descendant of Nancy Chambliss (b. 1782 in Darlington Co., SC.) She was a child of a John Chambliss and his second wife. This line traces back to Robert (Row-ber) Chamnis, 1603, France to England and on to colonial Virginia.
Nancy was my 3 X g. grandmother who m. John Roark (b. 1773 in NC) I would think they may have met after Nancy, her brother Stephen and several other Chambliss' left SC and moved to northern Alabama. John Roark had many Roark kin in southern TN (Frnaklin Co.) just across the border. 3-5 of their 7 children were born in AL. They moved Smith Co., TN, then Franklin Co., then west to Henderson Co. in abt. 1825. In 1834, John, Nancy, and 5 of the children moved to Coahuila Y Tejas (Texas). Two daughters stayed in TN and later moved to MS.
Nancy Chambliss Roark d. in 1837.
I have copies of two letters from daughter Lucinda Roark to her oldest brother William M. Roark in 1836 and 1837. Lucinda mentions cousin Joel Chambliss coming to MS from AL to visit. Lucinda went to AL w/Joel. She also mentioned cousin Elizabeth Chambliss and Uncle Stephen Chambliss.
The Chambliss Genealogy Records that I have seen do not show Nancy's name among John Chambliss' children. I was told by a Chambliss Researcher that she was erroneously left out or misnamed. Would appreciate your answer. Karen Chambliss Abraham, from Sonoma City, CA has a large Chambliss Record. Nancy isn't mentioned among John's children in this record either.
Doug Roark

What's up? You are certainly right abt. etomoogy. One must consider the education level throughout history. Even census takers weren't challenged when spelling a Sept incorrectly...thus..in my Nancy Chambliss (1782, SC), the name became Chambless. Family reunions have been attended by people in the same line, yet spelling their names differently.
My name is Doug Roark. I have found sixteen different variations of the Irish name, O'Rourke which was est. using the original name Ruairc. Even Heremon was part of this Irish name borrowed from the Norse then considered Gaelic then Irish.
Blame the English for forcing Irish, Welsh, and Scots to make their names "English" or Anglo-Saxon. Henry Cromwell and others forced the dropping of 'O , Mc, and Mac from Irish and Scottish names.
I was able to find the family of Nancy Chambliss only months ago. I had connected her w/the wrong family even though they were related. Karen Chambliss helped point out the parents of Nancy Chambliss. VA or NC had long been stated as Nancy's birthplace. However, she was born in Darlington Co., SC (1782), near the Pee Dee River. She and several siblings and other kin moved west to northern Alabama, (Marshall and Madison Co.s), probably just before 1800. Nancy met my 3 X g. grandfather, John Roark (1773, NC), and married him.
So, I will continue to consider education, pronunciation, and other applications when seeking branches of my family.
Geography also plays an important role. As a retired social studies teacher/athletic coach, I have found that my knowledge of these subjects has been invaluable.
Goodbye for now!
