Rebecca Ann Chamness born 09-10-1844 was the daughter of Micajah Chamness & Sarah A. Freestone. Rebecca was born in Madison County, IN, not the town of Madison. I do not have the date of her marriage to John W. Webb. Micajah Chamness was the founder of the town of Alexandria, IN, & there is a commerative stone there with his name on it. Micajah was the son of John Chamness & Charity Haworth & the grandson of Anthony Chamness & Sarah Cole. Anthony was the first Chamness to come to America. If you would like more info, please contact me at tjlesh@aol.com.

Re: Church records of John and Ann (Weary) Chamness & son Anthony

The name Chamness is reported to be an anglicization of the French La Champaigne "of the field" - hence the assumption that they came with Normans and William the Conqueror. Other forms in England are Champneys and Champness. John and Ann Chamness had 6 sons and 2 daughters baptized at St.John Wapping in the early 1700's. There was an Anthony Champneys who married Anne Pitts in 1686 in St.James Duke's Place. I don't have any direct proof that they were John's parents, but the dates would fit as well as the coincidence of the name Anthony. All of the Chamnesses in the English birth, marriage, death records from 1837 forward are in London, Essex, or Surrey.

There was another Chamness who settled in New Jersey in the late 1600's, but I don't think anyone survived from that group who carries the name Chamness. All the present-day Chamnesses in the US seem to be descended from Anthony and/or his extended family in North Carolina. I'm not aware of any Chamnesses returning to England.

I don't think that all the Chamnesses in England are necessarily related, but you should be able to trace back, starting with yourself, using the birth, marriage, and death records on file in England.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your search!
David Chamness, Holland, MI

Hiya... I have only just come across this site and am VERY interested in your message... My maiden name is Joanne Chamness and I live in england. For years i have know i had a rare surname but have always wondered how rare. I know that Chamness is a popular name in America but I am not from America and as far as am aware our blood line has always been in the uk. I would love somehow to find out if the Chamnesses in the UK nowdays have come here from america or if they are English Chamnesses and therefore have a chance of being distant relatives.... When Anthony was taken i wonder if he had some famlily that stayed here and continued the name... i have also been told that the name originated from around William the Conqurer, apparently there was a lord Chamness he had with him!!

Thanks for your reply.James Abbott is my GG Grandfather. Their is a very unusal story to his life. The marriage to Melina was a second marriage. Where did you get your information? I have death certificates, newspaper articles and records and some of the names you have listed are not there. I can verify all info on his first family
I have, but have had a difficult time verify is second family. Your response is one of the very few I have had over the years. Please let me hear from you again.

Thanks for your info. I have researched the same census that you have, with exception on Hamey. My problem is connecting the correct people. I have documentation of certain facts, such as my GGGrandfather had two children by Melvina Bryant Abbott who he married 9/26/1873. The first a daughter,Zulema(Zula)dob 1877 and a son Otto Grant, dob 6/18/1879 both born in Makanda, Il. Zula married James W. Brown 5/13/1896. Otto married Lulu Chapman whon died in 1927.
Otto died 10/10/1935. His death certificate list his mothers maiden name as Melvina Chamness. The newspaper obit list is sister as Mrs. J.W. Brown and sister Mrs. Henry Harmes of DuQuoin. A half brother JJ.Bryant. When J.J. Bryant died 2/14/1956 it listed a sister Mrs. J.W. Brown. I have more , but this confirms to me certian facts. I have done a study on dates and it could be that Malvina had been married before and had other children before marring Mr. Bryant and then my GGgrandfather. Gets deeper, let me know if you find more info.

My orginial research was the Abbott line. James H. Abbott was my gg grandfather. He had a very unusal story. Melvina Chaminess(Spelling?)Bryant was his second wife. He left for the War Between the States and was missing for 50th years. In 1919 he knocked on his granddaghters door. He lived with her until he died 5/20/1927 at 99. I have several realitives still living that were children and remember the stories he told. He never talked about Melvina, but did talk of children. He and Melvina had one daughter Zula and one son Otto Grant. I have death certificate, newspaper articles and records, but have never been able to reach any living realtives of this line. My biggest desire is to find living realtives.

I am sorry I wasn't being clear. I am not sure but the data I have found states

Hiram Haney married Mary Myers. They had a dau Melvina Haney. Melvina married the Abbott and Bryant. I never found proof her name was Melvina Chamness. If she is actually a Chamness, possible Mary was married twice and the first husband was a Chamness and then Hiram Haney just adopted Melvina and she took his name.

I think I have spoke with you awhile back. I am related to a different Chamness line. All I have is what I wrote. I saw your post and did a quick look up for you. I have done no research except for the 5 min of census looking, but it stated her name was Melvina Haney, dau of Hiram and Mary. I will look tomorrow and see if I can find a Chamness link. Possible Mary was married twice. Melvina is the oldest. So maybe Mary's first husband was a Chamness. I am not sure. I will see if I can find anything.

I looked at the census records. It's all in there. They all lived in Makanda since before 1850. So it was an easy census record lookup.

How is Chamness linked to this family?

I have Joseph Chamness born 9/25/1771 and his wife, Ruth McCracken in my family file. I show a son, Joel Chamness born 3/10/1800 who married Esther Elliot on 1/14/1821. They have several children, one a Mary Chamness who married George Moffett. I show two sons for Mary and George, George and John. The source for this information was the book, The Chamness Family, by Zimri Hanson. Did George Moffett die and Mary remarry?...or was the book wrong?

She is not from my Chamness line. However I have the census with her mother and all her siblings from 1930,1920 and 1910. I can email them to you. Also in 1930 Anna is a widow and her neighbor is Leonard Chamness. Leonard is most likely related to Artis. I found that Leonard is the son of James and Viola. He does not have a brother on the censuses listed as Artis. However they may have used middle names on the censuses, I have seen that before.
