Hello Lewis,

I have a connection to the Champ Surname through my Great-Grandmother. I have been doing Gnealogy research on all areas of my family since 2006. A lot of the info isn't on Ancstery yet. I am American, but living in Germany. The Champ story from my side starts with my Third Great-Grandfather Charles Champ who came from France via England. I think he was perhaps born in England, but maybe his parents came from France after the time of Napoleon. Anyway, I have some death records and written Family Histories. I am still working on obtaining Marriage and Birth Records.

Kevin

Hi Roux,

I am glad you have been able to work on William's line since 2007. That's interesting that we share great great grandparents.

I attach one picture which I have of Ethel & her children taken in Abingdon in 1915. Ada is the child on the left, with Alexander at the front and Patience, my grandmother, on the right. I hope the picture comes over, it is my first time at sending an attachment!

I would appreciate access to your tree, although I have a lot of information,I am especially interested in the Prior family going back beyond James & Fanny Prior, also the Greens, back from Edwin & Sarah (nee Prior).

Regards S
Hello

I am sorry but I do not know the parents of Richard Champ born in or around 1747. He married in Tyneham in 1773 having moved to East Lulworth sometime before. My gut feeling is that he came from Axminster in Devon where ther are numerous Champs in the late 17th, early 18th centuries, but I have no proof. He could be a son of Richard and Susannah (Hutchins).

Sorry I cannot be more helpful. I did know that several EL Champs went to the United States but I was not aware of George, the father of Joseph Francis (b1887) being the son of Frederick Champ and Frances (Roberts nee Lucas). Their son, George Herbert, was born in 1856, became quite wealth and died in Utah in 1919.

Although I know Joseph Francis was born on 22 August 1887, I have not been able to find him on the 1900 or 1910 U.S. Censusus for those years. Have you found him please? In the 1920 and 1930 censuses his birthplace is listed as Mosele Missouri.

Lewis

Hi Lewis,
I believe we made contact some years ago. My ancestor is William Thomas Napier CHAMP, son of Thomas CHAMP & Mary Ann BLACKALLER. Thomas was born circa 1773 at Weybridge, Surrey circa 1773 and was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth CHAMP. I have attempted many avenues to identify Thomas's father - without success.
I am interested to know what progress you have made with your One Name Study. Do all the Champs originate from France - as I have always assumed it is a French name.
Feel free to email me at peter.champ@bigpond.com
Peter Champ
Melbourne Australia

Hello Mr.White,

What a wonderful surprise! Do I have a lot of questions for you! And stories to tell you handed down through my family.

My mother is 19 years older than I and I am 44.

The reason why I mention this is because we kept our ears open for all these years and we are working on the family project together.

I live in Vermont, USA.

This is the best well written and researched document of the Champ family I have yet read. It has pieced together a chronological string that is similar to my own, esp. in the last 100 years of Coolegagan House.

More of that later. But did you know that our Clarke family owns a cottage named Coolegagan?

That is where Grandma Nan and I spent our last Summer together.

Brian Poole and Harold Storey, I agree, were enormously helpful to my understanding of the history around them. Harold sent me some valuable material from England 4 years ago. And I have read Brian Poole's responses to queries on Ancestry.com

The third man I am not aware of.

Be back soon.

Katy
(Ernest?) William Champ of Sunningwell, Abingdon, Berkshire, England

Hi

Is anyone here descended from or related to (Ernest?) William Champ b. abt 1879, of Sunningwell, Abingdon, Berkshire, England?

He married Ethel Green of Sunningwell... the youngest daughter of my GG grandfather Edwin Green. Ethel's mother was Sarah Green (nee Prior).

William and Ethel had a daughter called Ada Victoria SM Champ.

I think William was actually christened Ernest William Champ, but known as William.

There was another Ernest William Champ in Berkshire around this time, but he is in Reading (some distance) so I don't think he is a relation.

regards,

RouX (TJ Clelford-Phillips)

Dear Philip,

I am glad you wrote back.

I had guessed you live in England. Grandma Nan ( Annie ) may have mentioned English relatives but I remember little from age 12.She certainly loved all things British. Flew the Flag too.

I have made copies of your document and your letters for my mother to see.

I was glad to see photographs of Coolegegan. Mine are from late 10's to early 20's. Same position.

Apparently Nan and her daughter, Aunt Betty sailed on QEII in the late 60's to deal with property issues for Coolegagan.

Did all the cousins have to do that ?

Were there still debts?
Do you have better ones? Your grandmother was beautiful. She looks nothing like Annie Champ though.Your Grandmother and Is
aac are similar-looking.

Her life was tragic and filled much hardship. It is so sad.

Do you have anymore photos of the 17 sisters and brothers ?

Apparently, Annie Champ elderly parents adopted Babs as a little girl.Do you know who her real parents were ? Is she alive ? who are her children?, and on.

Annie's brother, Isaac, lived at Coolegegan. But for how long, his entire life. I have photos. Was he a dwarf ?

My mother and I know very little about Babs Whittaker.

I have sereral photos of her. One from Clarke wedding during the 1rst WW at Coolegagan and others when G.Grandparents returned with my grandfather "Peter" F.G.Clarke as a baby. (early 20's)

Do you want me to download and send these photos to you?

I will do the best I can. My skills are not great but I will try to be very specific in naming the people I do know in them for you.

Thank-you for help,

Sincerely, Katy

Hello Mr White,

Thank-you for your kind response.

Yes, in answer to your question, My g. grandmother's married name was Clarke. I knew her. She was a great letter writer.

I spent the last Summer of her life with her in Canada as an early teen.

I will be very glad if you communicate anything about the Champs and their relatives that you wish.

Any little fact or of fiction will be of use to me. I have heard many fictive-sounding stories, but who knows ? If you want to know some, let me know.

I am putting together a family-project. It is very interesting.

My very best to you,

Katy

I have the Champ Family in my tree from actually two different angles. 1st (closest to me) My sister whom is a Phillips married Gene Francis Champ. (still living)
I have ran the Champ Family data back from the information given to me via Gene Francis Champ and traced them back into Devon England. This family (tracing backwards from my brother in law) St. Louis from Old Mines/ Washington Missouri whom was Francis Champ, died young from a heart attack. Then from there - Joseph Francis Champ 1887 same location - George Champ who married Alice House (House closely related to me) 1860 Illinois moved down into previous location in Missouri. - Fredrick Champ who came from England mid 1800's through ellis island, movied into illinois. Thomas Champ 1791/1843 England - Richard Champ 1745/1824 East Lulworth, Dorset, , England who was a smuggler and ran the local pub.
Myself Im looking for the parents of Richard Champ. Any information is very appreciated. I do hope this has helped you with the Champ name.
Sincerely
Linda
