obit: Edmund Douglass 1918 father of Ellen CHAMPION

I am posting this here since it mentions that his daughter married a Champion. Does anyone have more info on Ellen (Douglass) Champion?
I believe "Mr & Mrs. Chas. Severns" is Ellen's daughter.
And if anyone has the photo mentioned at the bottom- I would LOVE a copy. This is my ggggrandfather

Republican Northwestern Newspaper, Boone county, IL 15 February 1918

HAD LIVED CLOSE TO HUNDRED YEARS
Edmund DOUGLASS, Known to Many in Belvidere, Had Voted for Eighteen Presidents – Saw many Stirring Times in the Pioneer Days of the Mississippi Valley
The death of Edmund DOUGLASS, father of mrs. Ellen CHAMPION of this city, who passed away at the age of 98 years at Postville, Iowa, ends a life remarkable in several respects. He was known to many in Belvidere, having visited his daughter at her home with Mr. and Mrs. Chas. SEVERNS of Warren avenue at different periods. His home was at McGregor, Iowa, but for the last years he had lived with a son in Postville.
An Iowa paper in commenting upon his life several years ago said:
“He came to this part of Iowa in 1846, settling where the town of Garnavillo now stands. This was two years before the Winnebago Indians were removed to Minnesota, while the soldiers were yet at Fort Atkinson and in the days of the Mexican war. Those were stirring times even though the country was sparsely settled. In 1853 he went overland with a party to California, riding a pony and driving stock across the plains and through the mountain passes. The plains in those days were the abode of hostile Indians and the Mormons made trouble for the government, culminating in the infamous Mountain Meadow massacre in 1857. So the route was dangerous, tedious and long. He spent three years in the west and then returned to this section, residing near here for many years.
Mr. DOUGLASS has voted for eighteen presidents covering a period of 72 years, and there are but few men in Iowa who can equal this record, let alone exceeding it. During the visit here he met many oldtime friends, who expressed their pleasures at meeting him once more. On Friday evening there was a little gathering in his honor at the home of his son, George DOUGLASS, who by the way is seventy-five years of age himself. At this time a photo was taken of four generations.”
Re: Possible answer to Rogers/Rodgers spellings

My oldest Rogers is John Rogers born in Virginia about 1745
and died before 1834 in Shelby Co. Ky. He married Mary Metcalfe of Virginia who also died in Shelby Co, Ky. He is listed as Rogers on his deed's and census but his son George and my direct ancestor is listed as Rodgers in the will book. However some of his census also listed him as Rogers. Several of his siblings went with the Rogers spelling. Does keep us on our toes. I thought I was getting pretty good at finding the sound alike names. Like Hagen for Hagan. Then a few years back I found Aegan.
Thank You

George Champion, fireman of pile driver injured in train wreck south of Ardmore, Oklahoma

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 30 July 1903 Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

SANTA FE WRECK

Two Trains on Santa Fe Crash Near Ardmore

Flagman Fell Asleep An Let Train By

A Local Freight Ran Into a Pile Driver Train – Three Men Seriously Injured – Flagman Arrested, by Afterwards Released

Ardmore: The north bound local freight on the Santa Fe ran into a pile driver fourteen miles south of Ardmore Friday, causing a serious wreck and injuring several of both crews, some very badly. The seriously injured: George Champion, fireman of pile driver, injured internally and lower limbs paralyzed. Recovery doubtful. Dan Hoyt, engineer of pile driver; very badly crushed, will probably die. Tom Moore, workman on pile driver, internal injuries and crushed, may not recover. The engineer, fireman and brakeman of the local jumped from the train before the collision.

E. C. Harris, a flagman had been sent down the track to warn approaching trains, but went to sleep and allowed the local to pass. Just before reaching Little Hickory Creek where the pile driver was at work, there is a sharp curve; so that the freight crew did not see the danger until too late. They then jumped from the cab, almost as the collision came and were all badly bruised, some of the wreckage falling on them.

All of the injured were brought to this city and were taken to the Santa Fe hospital at Temple,

The flagman was arrested and given an examination before Commissioner Robnett, but was released.
Who is Mrs. Celia Champion, who died 26 Feb 1873?

Mrs. Celia Champion, who died 26 Feb 1873, is written on the "deaths" page of my Johnson family's Knights Templar Bible. I'd like to know more about her.

She likely died in Pennsylvania, as my Johnson family lived there. Agnes M. Johnson (b. 1867/1838, d. 19 May 1892) was likely the wife of J. C. Johnson. If so, they lived in Clinton Co., PA, for the 1870 & 1880 census.

The Bible is dated 1871. It was given to her son, Elmer Ellsworth Johnson (also used Johnston), at her death.

Other than the inscription page, the only writing in the Bible is on the deaths page, with none of the five listed people having any known connection to the Johnson family.

Do you have any ideas?

Hello!

I am hoping someone knows which NC Champion family members moved from somewhere in NC to a place at/near Carrsville, Livingston County, KY---and owned slaves.

My ancestor, Gracie Champion was born in 1785 in North Carolina. Her parents were born in Africa. I am trying to track the owner and hopefully/eventually obtain a slave inventory list. If I can find the names, I can find the slave ship.

Gracie had 3 sons: (Carrsville, Livinston County, KY)
Gus (Gustavus?)b. 1826
H--- b. 1829
A--- b. 1832

Gracie was just shy of 100 years old when she died.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My email is qem122@earthlink.net

Champions in Ohio-Laima Champion ++++++

I'm been twisting myself in knots trying to locate the parents of Achsah "Axie" (aka Axia) Champion. Today I came across an 1870 Census from Plymouth TWP, Richland, Ohio that lists Laima Champion as head of household, age 45. Axia is listed with Gemima age 20, Malinda age 18, Joseph age 16, Axia age 15, Hariett(?) age 9, Emily age 6, George age 4, and Ida age 1.

Axia was born November 1854 in Ohio. She married Edward Thoman in 1872, although it shows her name as Axie Thoman. They had several children, including my grandfather, Nathan Thoman.

I'm desperately seeking info on Axie's father and mother, as well as any other info possible. Please contact me. I have Thoman relatives in Ohio also.

Champion family of Rhode Island, originally from Ireland

I am interested to know if anyone else here is related to the Champion family of Rhode Island.

William Champion was born 9/1/1849 outside of Belfast, Ireland. He was a seaman and eventually met and married Jane Matilda Hill of Prince Edward Island, Canada. They married in 1872, then lived in Boston for a short time before moving the family to Newport, Rhode Island. There they raised sons William, George, James, Nathan, Harrison and daughters Jane, Lillian, Ethel and Amy. The family still exists in and around Newport, R.I. as well as in New York and other places.

Anyone here related?

Champion Family in IL and KY

I'm descended from the Champion Family of central GA but have just encountered a Champion Family connection on my husband's side of the family.

William H Champion, (b) May 1850 in KY is living in Jackson Co, IL in 1900 and apparently married the daughter of William and Nancy Brown. I don't know her name (she must have died before 1900) but two of her sisters married Silas Chancey, my husband's gg grandfather. Does anyone have a connection to this William H Champion? I'd like to know his wife's name.

I'm also searching for additional information on the Brown family. Nancy (??) Brown lived to be around 100 years old and we've been told she was native american indian. We'd like to find out what tribe.

Thanks for your help.

Central Mississippi Champions

My name is Herb Champion. My people came from Granville or Stokes Co, NC, to West Point, MS. The father was John Champion (married to Nancy), and my direct ancestors were Winship Green Champion and Lettie Ann Melton. I believe they made the covered wagon trip to MS around 1842. Winship's siblings were William, Jane W, Sidney, and Jehana. My direct line includes Andrew Jackson Champion (b. 1851), Murray Bennett (b. 1896), and Herbert Arnold (b. 1927). There is one group of descendents still in the West Point area, but I am trying to determine where the others went, especially if any went east into Alabama. Does anyone have anything on this, please?

Champion Family Migration from KY > TN > MS

I am trying to determine which members of the Champion Family living in KY from 1795-1825 emigrated to Hardeman County, TN around 1825-30.

In the 1820 KY Census it appears that there are the following Champion families in KY (most likely all related to the Edgecombe/Halifax County NC Champions - although I do not know for sure)-

Livingston County:
James Champion aged 45+
Drury Champion (listed as Laurry) aged 45+
Mary Champion aged 45+
William Champion aged 45+
Willis Champion, Sr. aged 45+

Caldwell County:
Thomas Champion aged 26-45

Washington County:
Nancy Champion aged 45+

Woodford County:
Edward Champion aged 45+

In the 1830 TN Census the following Champion families exist in Hardeman County:
Drury Champion aged 60-69
William Champion aged 40-49

I am fairly confident that these Hardeman County Champions are from the same Champion families from KY listed above given the unusual but common name Drury. Additionally, my GGGGrandfather James M. Champion (who was born in Livingston County, KY around 1808) married his wife Parthena H. Anderson on October 2, 1833 in Hardeman County, TN. [They later moved to Tippah County, MS and raised their family of 8 children; William Henry Champion, Elliard D. Champion, Nancy H. Champion, Leander M. Champion, Sarah Leota Champion, Thomas Hardeman Champion, James Greeley Champion (my GGGrandfather), and Amanda Adaline Champion].

I would like to determine which adult Champions emigrated from KY to TN around 1825 and of these adults, whcih one had a son (or nephew for that matter) that traveled with them named James H Champion. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Their names were Gertie Nora and Claudie Isabelle.
If you have any info on any of these or anyother Sewards or Champions that might be related I would appreciate any assistance.
Thank you, for your assistance!
