Dear Bob,
I think we have 2 Lillians here. Her middle was possibly Fredaline and she was married to Joseph Clouatre in Dracut Mass. She was born June 5, 1895 but I haven't been able to find her on any census except 1930. I think she was born in Massacusetts but I don't know where. I'm thinking the Lowell Mass area or Canada.

Thank you for your help. I have lots of data on the Clouatre side, so I will keep hunting for the Champlains. Maybe I'll try using the Champlin name.

Thanks again
Kathy Morris.

Dear Kathy:
Don't know if this is the right person but I have a Lillian R. Champlin (LIN) born in Hampden County, Mass in 1895. Many Champlins changed their surname to Champlain thinking they were correcting and earlier error. Many Champlains in the USA are actually members of the Champlin family.
My Lillian was the daughter of Sobieska E. Champlin and wife Margaret M. (-?-). Her Champlin line in America was: Jeffrey (1), Christopher (2), William (3), Elijah (4), William (5), Raymond William (6), Henry L. (7), Sobieska E. (8), Lillian (9).
All "white" US Champlins descend from Jeffrey (1). So do almost all Canadian Champlins.
Other than Lillian and her parents being enumerated in the 1900 Census as living in Chicopee Township (Hampden County) Massachusetts, I have no more info on Lillian but plenty on her ancestors. If you think this might be your grandmother, I'd be happy to send more info.

Bob Champlin
Canada
While studying up on local history in the Hemlock (Richland Township, Saginaw County area of Michigan) I ran across the details of a 1921 murder in which a man named Richard Champlain (age 22) shot his mother and father and then set their bodies on fire. His father was Adrian Champlain. If anyone needs any additional info on this family, let me know, as I have acquired a lot of material on them, particularly about the murders. Also, I have a website at http://www.homestead.com/HemlockHistory

My husband's mother was told before she had my husband that is is a desc, of Samuel. A few years back, we looked in an Encyclopaedia. The picture of Samuel was the spitting image of my husband. The family names are Page, Markuan, Champagne and Massey. It's the Page and Markuan family that is from Lake Champlain and Canadian regions. Family lore also says it's indian blood. There has to be illegitimate somewhere.

Margaret:
Frederick sounds like Frederick Sylvester Champlin, son of Richard Champlin & Carolne Slate Peck. He was born in Old Lyme, Conn Dec 25, 1873 and died in San Louis Obispo, Calif Jan 29, 1958.
Frederick was born a Champlin but changed his surname to Champlain after moving to California. One relative said that he did that so he could be descended from Samuel de Champlain.
Dear Diane - I believe the name has something to do with Lake Champlain in NY state and the name "Champlin" is probably a shortened version. My husband's mother, Gertrude, was a Champlin from Delaware County NY. Her parents were James Clark and Florence (Clist) Champlin. Her grandfather was Charles R. Champlin married to Nancy McWilliams. The Champlin Linneage I have is from the Schoharie County Historical Society File and begins with Jeffrey Champlin living in Newport, R.I. in 1638. If you're interested contact me at the above. Joyce

His Parents might be Antoine de Cham-
plain and Marguerite Le Roy?
The town he grew up in is La Rochelle close
to Brouage on the Brittany coast France.
And I have an other book of The History of
Canada dated 1898 with the first flag and the
first maps of Canada from 1500 to 1763.
W.H.P. I found the Jeffrey and "Ellis" on her deathe certificate, but haven't been able to find a trace beyond that!

Please send anything you have as an e-mail attachment to the addy above.

Did the name really change to "Champlain," as my records have it (not only in a handwritten family history but on D's death dertificate, and if so, do you know when?

The tradition in our family was that Delilah was French, but if you say Jeffrey was a 7th gen. American, that may be a pretty far stretch, no? This must take them back to pre-Revolutionary days??

I have that D. was born in Delaware County, NY, in 1839 (that from the family history written by her husband's second wife).

What is your connection to the family?

I'll be eagerly awaiting hearing from you again!

Esther Gross, Dallas, TX

Samuel de Champlain

It is not likely that you are related to Samuel. "Champlain" was an alias as he was born "Complain", so the only way you could be related to him (using your in-common last name as reason to think you might be related) would be through Samuel's children.

Samuel married a 12 year old girl, Helene Boulle when he was in his 50's They never consumated their marriage and she never had any children - in fact, she became a nun, founded an order of nuns and became a Mother Superior. In France in those days, you could marry a girl of 12 but couldn't co-habit until they were 14. Samuel left for the new world before Helene was 14.

Unless he had illegitimate children in Canada who could prove their relationship to him, you are not related.

It is very common in the Champlin family for people to believe they are actually Champlains and descended from Samuel. Some go as far as to legally change the spelling of their surname to make it so!

I say this because most of the Champlains in the USA are actually descended from Jeffrey Champlin who settled in Rhode Island in the mid 1630's.

If you live in the US and are interested in trying to see if you are a descendant of Jeffrey's, let me know. I have lots of data on this family.

Sincerely;

Bob Champlin
bchamplin2@hotmail.com

Samuel de Champlain

Samuel had no legitimate children that I know of. His wife's name was Helene Boulle. She had her marriage to Samuel annulled as it was never consumated. Helene later became a Mother Superior and I think that she has been elevated to some near saint status within the Catholic Church. I'm not catholic and am not very familiar with the terminolgy. The road to Sainthood takes several stages and I'm fairly certain that Helene has crossed a few of the hurdles.

Bob Champlin

Keith:

Samuel de Champlain's mother was as you wrote but his father's surname was de Complain. That was Samuel's surname as well until he changed it the de Champlain later in life.

It is also my understanding that Samuel had no children.

The Champlins of North America are all descended from Jeffrey Champlin of Rhode Island. He settled there in the 1630's and was an Englishman. Most US Champlains are also descended from this man. There is one Champlin family in the Toronto area that came from England earlier this century.

Bob.

Jean Champlain

That far back in time, Jean is more likely to have been a descendent of Jeffrey ChampLIN of Rhode Island than a real ChampLAIN. Certainly, he/she was not a descendent of Samuel as he had no children that bore his name.

Many ChampLINs changed the spelling of their surname to ChampLAIN but that only changes appearances, not DNA.

I have a Frederick C. Fitch married to a Huldah A. Champlin. Huldah was born c1816 in Colchester, Connecticut and her family moved to East Haddam, Conn in 1824 - so she was heading toward where you said she was from.

I know nothing more about Huldah's life except her Champlin ancestry and I know a LOT about that.

Huldah was 8th generation Champlin in America, the line going: Jeffrey (1-2-3-4), Benjamin (5-6), Gardiner (7), Huldah (8).

Gardiner Champlin married Esther Potter.

I would love to discuss this further by email.

Bob Champlin
bchamplin2@hotmail.com

Dear Pamela: Please contact me at email address: bchamplin2@hotmail.com
I would like to discuss this issue with you. The proper family name is Champlin. A number of Champlins changed the spelling of their surname to Champlain for various reasons (to become French, to become related to Samuel de Champlain, to correct what they thought was a spelling error, etc.). Fact remains though that most Champlains in the USA descend from Jeffrey ChampLIN of Newport, RI.

Bob
