These names are close to mine, but I don't know how. My ancestor, John Clark Wilcox (1775-1837), son of Arnold Wilcox and Susannah Champlin, born in South Kingstown or Westerly, RI, raised around Stonington, CT, moved to Sherman, Chautauqua Co., NY, in 1825. John Clark had 5 lines of descent from the Hazard family.

John C. Wilcox's uncle, Robert Wilcox (1753?-1808), of Lebanon, CT, had a daughter Mary, who married Aaron Brown. Robert married Sarah Wilbur.

I'm familiar with the Hamburg, Michigan, area. It was strictly Indian country in 1807. COuld it refer to Hamburg, NY?

I would be interested in reading the letter. As my Wilcox family connects to the Champlins 2/3 times and to the Hazards 6 times (much intermarriage among cousins), I might be able to help.

Paul Gifford
Seeking to locate the relationship between Champlin and one of the surnames - Wilcox, Wilbur, or Morgan. The surname was mentioned in an old letter written by Robert Brown in 1893. He also mentions that a Champlin, Wilcox, and Hansand/Hazard branch of the family from Rhode Island. Says in 1807 a Jeffrey Champlin, Robert Wilcox, and others to Lake Lond [possibly Lakeland, Hamburg, Michigan]and how a group went out later and settled in Michigan. The letter is very hard to read still trying to figure things out.

With nearly 3,000 burial grounds and cemeteries in RI, it is very unlikely that you will find a marker in such a cemetery. Many of my ancestors are buried in small family plots without a headstone. Headstones were expensive.

Midge

When I visited the "Champlin-Wilcox Lot" (WY-003) in 1995, I got cut to shreds by the thorn bushes that had overgrown the place. I found only two stones with writing on them. One was Jeffrey's middle son, William.
Since then there must have been some clearing of the thorn bushes because I have seen photos of a great many more stones, mostly Wilcox's.
I haven't seen a photo of Jeffrey's stone as yet.
Is there any evidence from old records that he is even buried here?
Bob Champlin
bchamplin@can.rogers.com
I would just like to add a note of caution to all of this. That Joanna was Joanna Watson, is I believe merely speculation. Neither The Champlin Memorial (c1888) nor The House Of Champlin (c1933) provide a surname for Joanna. Other old genealogies fail to name her as well. I have seen her called Watson with a question mark added a number of times over the years but have never seen the names any Watsons (parents, siblings, cousins, etc.) associated with her in any way. I have her in my own records as "(Watson?)".

I have, as their children: William (c1720), Michael (c1723), John (c1727), Elijah (c1729), Dorcas (c1732) and Temperance (c1738). No Amey (c1711).

I have Amey b.1710, Michael b.1723, Samuel b.1724, Elijah b.1726, Dorcas b.1732, Temperance b.1738. These came from several family trees on Ancestry. I searched the birth, death, marriage and census for Joanna and didn't find her or her parents. It's hard to find women in 1600s records.

Judy

Hi Bob,
My tree is not open to the public, only to the dozen or so people I have invited to view it, no one else can add to it, but if they have access to my tree they can copy records to their own tree.
I think it is best to start at the 'home person' screen; click next to the little green house at the top right. Click also on 'view family tree' next to the tree title on the top left. From the tree view, click on my first Champlin; Birdie Bell. To see that person's page, hover over the name and click 'view profile'. From here you can click on any family member to navigate to their profile. Click again on 'view family tree' at the top left, at any time, to go back to tree view. Once you master that, it's pretty user-friendly.

I also have a Champlin weblog I have put some time into, you may enjoy having a look at it. It is not published either, I only put it together to help me get a better grasp of things. I have only invited a couple family members to view it but I would be pleased to have your imput. I will send an invitation to view to your email.

I really benefited from the information you sent me back in 1999; you sort of launched me on my family history quest. Please feel free to straighten me out anywhere you see I have gone wrong, and let me know if I can do anything for you.
Jody
Yes, I am.
I looked at your new tree. I've never seen one of these before and so don't think I was very successful exploring it. Then again, it might be very new and still under construction.

I'm a bit confused about it's goal. I noted 100 Champlins but they are from an assortment of family lines. What is the common denominator among the Champlins? What's their connection to the other 1800 people?

I'm not being critical. Just a bit lost. Looks like a nice site. I think someone else just added some info so I guess it's open to others? Is there some sort of explanation about the site, how it works and what's there?

Bob

Bob

Dear Joyce:

Are you speaking of Cecil Arthur Champlin (1918-1983), son of Louie Ray Champlin & Leta G. Alderman?

If so, I have plenty of data on him. He was an 11th generation Champlin in America. His Champlin lineage was: Jeffrey (1), Christopher (2), William (3), Elijah (4), William (5), Samuel (6), William Elisha (7), Ebenezer (8), Loren (9), Louie Ray (10), Cecil Arthur (11).

My home email is: bchamplin@can.rogers.com

Send me an email address and I will forward what I have on your father and each of his Champlin ancestors in America.

Bob

Wow. Thank you for pointing this out. It was an 1880 Fed. Census and a DIFFERENT Edward and Sarah Davis with close birth dates. I believe Sarah remarried in 1858, which would put Edward's death between 1853-58. That is if the trees I got the info from are correct. I tried to find Edward in the death index, but didn't. Sorry I couldn't help you.

Sarah is my husband's first cousin 5x removed.

Judy Adams Goodman

Does anyone have any information regarding the George W Champlin, b 1825 in NY, who married Ruth Churchill in Tioga County, PA?

Only information I was able to dig up on his background was a notice printed in the 30 Jun 1870 Yates County Chronicle that read: George Champlin, formerly a resident of Tioga Co., Pa., and still earlier of Yates county, went west in May 1868, and was last heard from at Topeka, Kansas in May 1869. Letters directed to him at that place by his daughter Emma, residing in the family of John Dains in Jerusalem, come back to her through the dead letter office. She is extremely anxious to hear from him, and papers at the west are desired to copy this notice or its substance, so that he may, if living, be apprised that his eastern friends are extremely anxious concerning him.

gmett182@verizon.net
