POW/MIA Korean War, CHAN

I am searching for the families of a soldier with the surname CHAN that were lost in the Korean War. At this time the government has no family contact. At the time he was lost his remains were not recovered. Family DNA is needed to identify remains if and when they are recovered. At the time they entered service they gave their Home of Record as posted below

Soldier: CLARENCE CHAN
Born: 1930
Date of loss: April 23, 1951 MIA
Home of Record: Contra Costa, California

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. Our government has no family contact for this soldier.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
517 Mohican Trail
Wilmington, NC 28409

40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Yew Onn Chan:
I am looking for a classmate that graduated at the same time as myself in 1985 from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. Yew Onn received her Master's degree. In the 2004 Alumi Directory of LSU it gives the address of Yew Onn Chan as: 14 Aroozoo Ave., Singapore 1953, Singapore, China. I don't know if the 1953 is part of the address or her birth year, but I feel that is close to her birth year. I think she was around 30 years old at in 1985. Each of us wanted to kep in touch with each other and I have thought about her all these years and would love to hear from her. Should you know her whereabout please let her know I am looking for her. She will remember me as "Roxie Booker" and I think she will remember that I was from Texas. My email is: roxiebooker@yahoo.com

Hullo Alex, Where abouts in NZ are you? I have spoken to my inlaws and they confirm that Alex Chan is a relative of ours, and they knew him very well. I used to visit him all the time in the 80s, as he lived not far from us.
Helen,
Thank you. Granddad came in through Auckland (we think it was in 1920 as we can't quite read the date on the copy of his poll tax certificate), and I believe he spent some time up north in Dargaville before coming back to Auckland.
The information we have is that he was born on 3 Aug 1901. His father was Ru Jin Chen and his mother was Huan Sen Liu (believed to be her maiden name).
Apparently he had the following siblings:
Qiao Ji Chen, Jie Hai Chen, Lian Xing Chen, Lian Feng Chen, Zi Guang Chen and Heng Yan Chen.
Looking at the spelling of the parents and the siblings names, it would appear that the name was changed from Chen to Chan by the immigration officer on his arrival. I believe this was quite common.
Any further information would be most appreciated and can be sent direct to our family at chanclub@globe.net.nz

Thanks

Alex Chan

Hullo there, I may be able to assist. Where did your grandfather go to when he came to NZ? I am doing some ground work with Prof Henry Chan, Sydney University, of the Chan family, and partly with the hargee village. My in laws are from there and we have 3 elderly family members (87, 89 and 93) who have a lot of knowledge. They will be related to your family. Let me know what information you have, and what you need to find out. Richard Chan is also looking for information on Hargee villagers as well.

Helen Wong

William Augustus Chan is the grandson of a Chan immigrant who came from China as an indentured labourer during the period 1853-1879. He became known as Mark Chan and bore 6 children with his wife Hannah Yong-A-Pat. The last son, Joseph, known as Shing, had 3 sons, the eldest being William Augustus. The other Chan clan members have maintained a large family tree and have periodic family reunions, but there is not much awareness about your branch of the family. I'm glad to be able to fit you in. You can see more about the history of the early Chinese immigrants to Guyana at my website.

Please visit Chinese in Guyana: Their Roots at
http://rootsweb.com/~guycigtr

Hi Stephanie, Was doing some research again on the family and came across the message you had sent on your grandfather Robert Chung Chan. He could be the brother of my grandfather San who I believe was born around 1895 in, we thought Seattle, Washington. I have pictures and the marriage license of my grandparents that state his birth date and place of birth as Seattle. If you would like I will try to e-mail the picture of possibly your grandfather and mine and we can maybe prove that we are related. Hope to hear from you, Beth

Hi Stephanie, I had sent an e mail to the address of Sth9200@aol.com but I'm not sure that you got it. I'm on aol also so it will be easy for us to exchange our information. I have my grandparents marriage certificate and several pictures of them and other friends and family members. One picture is of a family with seven children, I am unable to find out who the family is.I have written to and telephoned Seattle, Washington vital statistics which is where San listed as his place of birth and they have no record of him. I am very interested in finding some information about my grandfather and had given up until I received your e mail. It is not easy trying to find out about any Chinese person who came to this country in the late 1800s or eary 1900s. One person I spoke to in Seattle told me that most of the Chinese answered the questions on the forms with any answer that sounded good. That is probably why it is so difficult to verify any of my information. Also, he was sent back to China on family business and was killed there. I know I will never be able to locate a record of his death in China.I hope that we can help each other in our search, hope to hear from you. Beth

First and formost let me thank you guys for informing me of some things I didn't know. But I would like to correct the name of my dear father which is: William Augustus Chan,Jr. and mu mother's spelling of her name which is: Frances Steele. Also if you like to add that even though our dear beloved Grand-Father is passed we still have him in our minds and hearts. Also would like to say that for all of our deceased family may they peacefully rest in peace, and for the ones that we cannot see, like my wonderful uncle/god-father, who has been sent back to his native home, and the other uncle who no one can see may GOD bless them and hope that they are OKAY!!!
