He wasn't legally adopted. We've known that all along. The information I have is what he had written down before his death. We've yet to find a birth certificate for him but haven't been through all of his paperwork. I'm not sure the associated Harold Chandler is the correct one. I've had very little luck in locating any information whatsoever. Unfortunately father-in-law's belongings are in another state and not easily accessed. It will be several months before we have an opportunity to get there and finish going through the papers. The only people that knew any details are all now deceased. This posting and the associated family tree are shots in the dark. I haven't found any records of anyone from his birth family yet.

Alysa Chandler,

Guess you aren't getting responses or just not interested.

Your father-in-law must not have been legally adopted as he retained the Chandler surname and you married his Chandler son.

You have the info that James Harold Chandler was born 13 Mar 1947 in Charleston, Kanawah Co, WV. You must have something (birth certificate?) to show that his biological father was Harold Chandler and his biological mother was Grace Johnson. Were they married.

Your Ancestry personal profile site reveals that your Chandler husband may be connected somehow to Thompson Chandler/Margaret Smith. How do you know this if you have not connected your Chandler husband to any specific Chandler line. Has someone taken the yDNA test and results placed in the Thompson Chandler group at CFA's DNA project.

I think this curious.

I am interested because of the names "James" and "Harold". There was a Harold James Chandler born 1919, son of James Albert Chandler, who lived in Charleston, SC, during the time of your father-in-law's birth. This Harold Chandler died 1952 in Charleston of a condition related to acute alcoholism. This Harold Chandler was married, but I do not know his wife. There may be a SLIGHT chance that this is the family line you seek.

I must add this correction to my originial post to you.

The Harold Chandler who died Feb 1972 is not the son of Albert and Roxey Mullins Chandler. Albert/Roxey's son Harold died 10 Apr 1952. His death certificate is online at WVA archives and states he was born 30 Jan 1916, was 36 years old at death, and that he was married! But his father was informant and no wife's name is listed! He is still a possibility for father to your James Harold Chandler born 1947. I do know that Albert's full name was James Albert Chandler.

So I don't know who the Harold Chandler is who died Feb 1972 with last residence as Charleston, Kawanah Co, WVA. The best way to find out is to see if there is an obit in a Kanawah Co newspaper.

Now my quest is to find Albert's other sons, Rex and Kenneth, to see if they married and had descendants.

Your James Harold Chandler could have a yDNA test done to determine if he fits in with the Chandler Family Association's Chandler groups. You might visit the CFA site. I am after a descendant of said Albert Chandler line to see if a yDNA test could be done.

Cheryl

Re: Chandler family - Dover, Kent

Nicole,

Following an email exchange with a descendant of Jacob Bayley Chandler, I have been exploring his ancestors, although to date I have found no suggestion that this branch of the family connect with our own Chandlers.

However, I did notice the post that you made in 2007 and thought that I would reply with my conclusions, which I feel hang together quite well, although they have not been rigorously proven. You may of course have made progress in this area and may now know more than you did then!

My suggestion is based the IGI, the 1841 and 1851 census, Freebmd and on information from extracted parish records from St Nicholas, Ash next Sandwich, Kent.

So, here goes.

The IGI tells us that there are 6 siblings,
Thomas b 1/2/1821
Jacob Bayley b 17/3/1822
Mary b 3/12/1823
William b 27/10/1825
Elizabeth b 17/9/1827
Selina b 12/3/1831
all children of Thomas and Mary, all baptised in Dover, and it is reasonable to assume all are born there.
Since it is an extracted record I would assume it is reasonably accurate, and certainly unlikely that all 6 are wrong!

From the 1851 census we see that Selina b 1831 in Dover is with her cousin, and we assume this to be Ann Revell. Ann Chandler married George Revell in 1842.

In the 1841 census Selina Chandler b1831 is in Ash in the household of John and Sarah Chandler. The 1841 does not give relationships or places of birth (other than telling us she was born in county)

The extracts from the Ash registers gives John Chandler b 4-9-1791 marrying Sarah Gilham on 16-5-1815, and gives the following children:
Mercy b 2-6-1816
Mary Ann b 16-11-1817
Anne b 25-6-1820, m 24-12-1842, d 30-11-1868
Charles b 28-4-1822

I believe that Selina is actually a niece staying with her uncle John at the time of the 1841 census. From other sources, I understand that her siblings had recently gone to Hobart, and I might conclude her parents to be dead by 1841.

The Ash records for Anne also gives her marriage as 24-12-1842. This would fit with the marriage of Ann Chandler to George Revell in 1842. There is also a death of Ann Revell given in FreeBMD in Eastry in 1868, aged 48.

This suggests that Ann Revell from the 1851 census is Anne Chandler, daughter of John and Sarah from the Ash church records.

Moving up a generation, from the Ash church records, John b 4-9-1791 is son of Thomas b 16-2-1755 and Mercy Sayer. Thomas and Mercy married on 16-10-1786, and had 7 children:
Thomas b 18-2-1787
Sarah b 1-3-1789
John b 4-9-1791
Mary Ann b 20-4-1794
Stephen b 16-4-1797
William b 7-4-1799
James b 11-7-1802

There is no record in Ash for a marriage or death of Thomas, suggesting that Thomas moved out of Ash.

I therefore speculate that Thomas b 18-2-1787 in Ash, moved away, married a Mary (possibly a Mary Bayley), and was in Dover when they had the 6 children we see on the IGI. It would be good to find a marriage of Thomas Chandler to a Mary, probably in Dover in around 1819 or 1820, although I can find no trace of this.

The records from Ash will then take us back from Thomas and Mercy to earlier generations.

In the light of Dick Chandler’s reply to your post, I have been in touch with him regarding the above, and whilst he finds my conclusions convincing, he also can find no record of a marriage for Thomas b 1787 to tie up the loose ends.

I hope this helps.

Chris
Hello Bruce

Yes, many CHANDLERs in Oz! In fact, the CHANDLER surname occurs at an average rate of 3-4 per 10,000 of the general population in English-speaking countries.

I would have taken the surname KOSSOWSKY as Russian rather than German. It was quite common for immigrants to Britain, especially Jewish immigrants, to take as their new surname a name more usually expected as a forename, e.g. ERNEST.

There were two KOSSOWSKY arrivals at Ellis Island, New York in the 1890s. One, forename Ch. (probably Chaim and therefore probably Jewish) aged 18 of Rusian ethnicity, arrived on 6 January 1892 aboard the S.S.Bothnia out of Liverpool. The other, forename J. aged 35 of German ethnicity, arrived on 13 June 1892 aboard the Tower Hill from another U.S. port (Boston, I think).

I recommend that you search the 1900 U.S. Federal Census
for occurrences of the KOSSOWSKI surname, but do NOT use exact matching, as there are none with exactly that spelling but quite a few close variants which are probably the same surname.

The "Migration" section of the pay-per-view site http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp has a number of KOSSOWSKI departures from England to America in the period that interests you.

Please tell me all that you know (exact date, place, parents names, etc) about the marriage of Frank KOSSOWSKY to Grace S CHANDLER in 1926. If you prefer, you can e-mail me directly at dchandler@sunwave.net

Best wishes

Dick Chandler

Hello Dick
Many thanks for your answer and information..I have however researched all of this some time ago hence my appeal for more help. Frank Kossowsky (Ernest) was my father (he married Grace Chandler)and Ernst Kossowsky my grandfather, my problem is tracing when and how they arrived here around 1895 and the ancestors of the Ernst Kossowsky. They appear to have changed their name around 1900 but there is no official record of this. We believe that it was due to the "German" name causing some distress at that time.
With also believe that there were other members of the family who rather than leaving ship in England sailed onto America or Canada.
So far we have not had any success whatsoever except for finding out about the Kossowsky family that arrived here in c1895.
As you see there is a connection between the Kossowsky and Chandlers.

With your experience, can you offer any advice on tracing the family further?

Regards
Bruce

PS have had some very interesting contact with a newly found cousin in Australia who relates thro` Chandler`s who emigrated in 1875 on the SS Great Britain. As you no doubt know, there are a lot of Chandlers in OZ.

Hello,

There might be a SLIGHT, SLIGHT possibility that your James Harold Chandler is the son of a Harold Chandler born 05 Jun 1915 in WVA and died Feb 1972, last residence Charleston, Kanawah Co, WVA.

I am sorta tracing this line of Chandlers and was thinking about getting an obit for Harold who died 1972 just to see if there were any sons/daughters surviving.

The census below shows Harold with his brothers (Rex and Kenneth) and his father (Albert). Harold's mother (Roxey Mullins) has died.

1920 CENSUS
Scott Twp, Boone Co, WVA, p. 45B:
Jack Mullins 47
Laura Mullins 44
Dooly Mullins 19
May Mullins 17
Inez Mullins 13
Rex Chandler 7 gson
Kenneth Chandler 6 gson
Harold Chandler 5 gson
Albert Chandler 30 sonL

This could be one lead for you to check out. Pls. let me know if you decide to do so and what you find out.

Thanks. Cheryl

Bruce
I see that you posted the following message on the Kossowski list early this year "Ernst Kossowsky, his wife Margaretha and their three daughters, Elsie, Erna & Lilly arrived in England from Germany about 1895.
He had a Hairdressers shop in Church Road, Willesden.
I am the grandson of the Kossowsky`s and am keen to trace any information regarding the family. The surname was changed some time prior to the 1911 census to Ernest"
Noting that the surname KOSSOWSKI was changed to ERNEST before 1911, I can advise you that the marriage of Grace S CHANDLER to a man surnamed ERNEST was registered at Willesden (the place you mentioned) in the 3rd (September) quarter of 1926 (Volume 3a Page 668). With that information, you can purchase a copy of the marriage certificate for seven pounds online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp if you wish.

There was also a Dorothy E HAGEDORN birth registered at Willesden in the 4th (December) quarter of 1912 (Volume 3a Page 568), the mother's maiden name being ERNEST.

There was also an Elsie E KOSSOWSKY marriage registered at Willesden in the 4th quarter of 1911 (Volume 3a Page 521). One of the bridegrooms shown on the same page was Albert HAGEDORN, so it looks as if Albert and Elsie E were the parents of Dorothy E born in 1912.

Good luck!

Dick Chandler

True, this message board is for discussion of the CHANDLER surname. However, if you have found a connection between your KOSSOWSKY family and the CHANDLER family, and can show where they are connected and include both surnames in the body of the post, then the KOSSOWSKY post would not be out of line.

Sarah McCray
Chandler message board administrator
saramac@windstream.net

Hi Bruce

This message board is for research of the CHANDLER surname. There is a KOSSOWSKY board for those researching that name.

You may know this already, but the first "e" in the place name Willesden is silent, so it is pronounced "Willsden".

Good luck with your research

Dick Chandler in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada

Current project is to cross reference Chandler and related surname entries in the Virginia Historical Index and then follow up with research at the Linebaugh Library, Murfreesboro, TN where several of the sources indexed in the VHI are in the collection there.

Basing this on information through the CFA website and focusing on early records of the following Virginia counties: Elizabeth City, Northumberland, York and New Kent.

Some of the associated surnames are Terrell, Henderson, Armistead, Thoroughgood, Lawson, Fairfax and Walker.

Any surnames for me to check in my research, please let me know. Reply here and I will receive an email alert.

Barry Jernigan
Smyrna, TN (Rutherford Co)

Okay I will post it here when I decide to make the trip. Trying to get as much info online before I go to save time when I get there. I think what we need is direct male line descendants of Boyd's Creek Chandlers to have their DNA tested and see if they are indeed from Group 7A (descendants of Robert Chandler of Elizabeth City Co, VA and a probable grandson of the emigrant John Chandler of Jamestown 1610).

Barry Jernigan
Smyrna, TN (Rutherford Co)

Timothy Chandler (same as the owner of Wheatlands plantation in Boyd's Creek, Sevier Co, TN?) bought land in Greasy Cove, Washington Co, TN (now Unicoi Co, TN). Any relation to your Chandlers?

Direct male line descendants of Chandlers should consider having their DNA tested and see if you match other Chandler groups. I am actually a Group 7A Chandler not a Jernigan at all. This has been proven by Y-chromosome test results.

Group 7A are the ones descended from Robert Chandler of Elizabeth City Co, VA (a probable grandson of the emigrant John Chandler of Jamestown 1610).

Barry Jernigan
Smyrna, TN (Rutherford Co)

Have you already tried finding these people/families in the Virginia Historical Index and then searching for the corresponding articles, periodicals, etc? Just asking because I am starting a project using my copy of the VHI to find Chandlers and associated families. I have seen mention of a woman whose maiden name was Woolfolk in the listing of Chandlers. Elizabeth City, Northumberland, York and New Kent counties in Virginia are the primary locations for my research. The earliest stomping grounds of my line of Chandlers were there.

Barry Jernigan
Smyrna, TN (Rutherford Co)

I am a member of the CFA and participant in their Y-chromosome DNA project. My kit # is 109219. I have documentation that leads me back to Clement Jernigan & Drucilla Terry of Sevier Co, TN (1840 & 1850 census). Not too far away is B. M. Chandler. Wondering if he might be my Chandler connection. I have seen some other researchers indicating that the Chandlers of Boyd's Creek were Group 7A Chandlers. I am currently researching this family and will probably have to make the trip to Sevier Co to do on hands research. Genealogy Trails website has a good section on Sevier Co including deed, wills, court documents, cemetery listings, bios, etc

Re: First Chandlers in Tennessee?

Further comments in this thread are continued in the thread entitled "Chandlers of Boyd's Creek, Sevier Co, TN"

Incidentally the surname Walker has shown up in several other places -- in a Chandler household in Wilson Co, TN; here in this sale inventory and on Genealogy Trails in their databases for Sevier Co, TN -- Walker and Chandlers of Boyd's Creek are mentioned as 'descendants' of Revolutionary War veteran Spencer Clack. The Clack homestead was later occupied by the Walker and Chandler families and is the location that later became the Chandler plantation in Boyd's Creek known as Wheatlands.

I'll be watching for further possible connections between the Chandlers and Walkers. Perhaps they were even relatives back in Wilkes County, North Carolina or even earlier in Virginia?

I also notice that Hendersons appear in both Wilson Co, TN and in Sevier Co, TN. The Hendersons in Wilson Co, TN were relatives of the Chandlers there. I've not found any family connections between the Hendersons and Chandlers of Boyd's Creek in Sevier Co, TN. Henderson is a very common name. There were tons of them everywhere in TN eventually.

Ditto the surname Gibson -- present in Sevier Co, TN and also associated with the Chandlers of Floyd Co, KY. But again a very common surname as well.

I know the names of seven of the children but Sarah is not among them. Now, some interest though, my information shows an Eliza Ann Chandler who marries John Lawrence Scott son of Joseph Scott and Rebecca Chandler. Eliza was born on Jan. 26, 1826. She was one of Daniel Dials children...
Joseph Chandler Ortmann

Hi Cheryl, just saw your post....back in the saddle after moving to next state. I do not know the correct order of ancestors to my 3Gr Grandfather, Welcome William Chandler. I do believe his parents were William H (Hugh? no doc) and Tabitha Elizabeth Hodges. Some state that is was Tabitha Welsh, but I have uncovered Hodges in the same Co in MS and the naming of male children fits with Hodges. Their have been many postings of ancestry that I have gone over but many conflicts so I cannot validate or accept anything.

I wish that we could sort this out as this line has not been clarified. I have uncovered the descendants of William and Tabitha Chandler, most of whom relocated to Texas starting ard 1850. Welcome William Chandler states he was born in SC, likely Greenville. William and Tabitha could have had at least twelve children, but I have only been able to doc five males....William B Chandler, Drury Hodges Chandler, Welcome William Chandler, Edmond Hugh Chandler and Moses Holland Chandler all found in Texas. Early census records indicate that their were at least four daughters, their names unknown. Are you from the William and Tabitha Chandler of MS line? Let me know what you think.
Laurelee
Hi,

I'm about 99% certain Jack is the son of Ezekiel for a number of reasons. And, after 10 plus years searching for Ezekiel's parents, am about 75% certain its John and Diane Chandler. I believe Larkin to be a brother to Ezekiel.
These Chandlers likely date back to the John Chandler that arrived in Jamestown in 1600. Most of my info is on my home computer, so I'm going to look this posting up again later tonight and email give you additional.

Ezekiel and Susannah were married in "Washington Co" TN, in the area now Flag Pond. By 1825 they relocated over into Madison County in the Ivy Gap area, receiving land grants from the state of NC. In 1833 the county lines changed, putting them on the now Yancey/Madison county line. Jack disappeared during the Civil War, and I've not found any confirmation that he was enlisted on either side, but times were tough in that region. If you were found at home, you were either drafted or hung as a Union sympathizer, so any info on this would be great. His widow and children, including Wes, turn up in Tennessee again, again in the Flag Pond area in 1870 in the family of Lawrence Effler (I visited his grave the other day!). I have photos of Wesley Chandler, Mary Elizabeth Wolfe, and Sarah Sams from family members.

So, how are you related? I'm descended from Jack, through his son Wesley, then Henry Ragan, then Christopher, then Arthur Cecil, and now me, David Chandler, age 60, living in Burnsville NC. my email is david@ccvn.com and I'd love to hear back.

Tap Roots c2002, Book by Winston Griggs Chandler

Winston Griggs Chandler published book/cd titled Tap Roots in 2002 which might contain the info that Zachariah Chandler (with "h") who d.1837 in Caldwell Co, KY, was the son of a Zedekiah. And Winston may be the one who originally used the 1791 Bedford Co, VA, marriage record of Zachariah Candler (no "h") to Rachel Thornhill as the basis for this assertion. I believe this is where the mis-info came from. I know Winston is deceased (see far below).

I would like someone with access to this Tap Roots book to please check to see how Winston came up with Zedekiah as Zachariah's father. Thanks.

Winston G. Chandler
October 19, 1919 - July 20, 2004
Winston Griggs Chandler, Sr., age 84, of Little Rock, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2004. He was born October 9, 1919, to Lester and Mattie Chandler of Walnut Grove, Arkansas in Van Buren County. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ouida (Hunnicutt) Chandler; three sons, Winston Chandler, Jr. and wife Sharon, Mike Chandler and wife, Linda, Jeff Chandler and wife, Nancy, ten Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren; and a sister, Opal Kidd Koone. Winston was preceeded in death by a brother, Wendell Chandler. Winston attended the University of the Ozarks, University of Arkansas, and Arkansas Law School, graduating with LLB and JD degrees. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Air Force, four years active duty during World War II. He was a bomber pilot and retired a Major. Following his stint in the service, he and Ouida returned to Clinton and opened Chandler 5 & 10 Cent Store. After a few years, they sold out and he attended law school. They settled in Little Rock, where he owned and operated Chandler Trailer Convoy, a nationwide transportation company, from 1953 until 1986. His community service included stints on the Pulaski County School Board for eleven years, member of the President’s Development Council of Harding University, member of the Arkansas History Commission, Lions Club, and Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member of the National Democratic Finance Council in the mid-70s, and was Chairman of the South East Section in 1976. In 1962, Winston mounted a campaign for the United States Senate, opposing Senator J. William Fulbright. One of his campaign speeches was noted for being the first political oratory to be broadcast via satellite to other parts of the globe. In 1966, he entered the Democratic Primary for Governor of the state of Arkansas. Winston remained active as an advisor and consultant on both the local, state and national scene until his passing. Winston was a member of the church of Christ for 36 years, serving as an elder, deacon and worship leader. In recent years, he attended and was a vital member of the non-denominational Little Rock church. Music was always a big part of his life. He taught rural singing schools all over Arkansas and Missouri, was a member of the McDonald Stamps-Baxter radio quartet, and performed “coat-to-coast” on radio’s Gene Autry Melody Ranch program in April of 1943. Graveside services will be 11 AM on Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Walnut Grove Cemetary near Clinton, Arkansas. A celebration of a life well-lived will be 11 AM on Friday, July 23rd, at Little Rock church, 10701 West Baseline, Little Rock. (501-455-0900). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Winston’s name to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 11324 Arcade Drive, Little Rock, 72212. (501) 217-0321. Arrangements by Roller McNutt Funeral Home of Clinton.

Boyd,

Do you have any helpful info on the Zachariah Chandler (perhaps his brothers William Chandler and King Solomon Chandler, altho I have nothing to support this Zach's brothers) who was apparently in Greenville Co, SC, in 1790 (and 1800?), but left SC and went to Caldwell Co, KY, where he died (some say 1837)? Interested in his parents and his wife(s). Just looking for documented info. Thanks.

rpcbob - Wow, thanks for this info! I was wondering if there had been a yDNA test and thought, if so, the results would be in Group 7A.

I am not of this line. But would like to get one Zachariah Chandler with an "h" separated from one Zachariah Moorman Candler with no "h".

Many researches have combined the two Zachariahs into one Zachariah. I know they are different men but having a hard time convincing those descendants of the Caldwell Co, KY, Chandlers who are convinced that their Zachariah is the son of one Zedekiah. And I most certainly know that the Caldwell Co, KY, Zachariah Chandler with and "h" is NOT the son of Zedekiah CANDLER spelled with no "h" who married Anna Moorman and, in fact, named their son Zachariah Moorman Candler no "h".

Now I don't know who the father of the Caldwell Co, KY, Zachariah Chandler with an "h" is, but now know he is kin to the Chandlers of Group 7A.

Hope this makes sense. The yDNA results help to confirm my argument.

Would you go to the Chandler genforum message board and post all the info you have about the yDNA test results for this William Chandler (supposed brother to Zachariah Chandler) descendant? I have no idea if William and Zachariah were brothers, but at least they were both in Caldwell Co, KY, together at the same time.

Thanks. Cheryl

Zachariah Chandler 1790 and 1800 Census Greenville Co, SC

There is a Zachariah Chandler listed in 1790 and 1800 in Greenville Co, SC.

1790 - 1 male over 16 and 5 females (Zachariah and wife and four daughters?).

1810 - 1 male 0 to 9, 1 male 26 to 44, 2 females 0 to 9, 2 females 10 to 15, 1 female 26 to 44, 1 female 45 and over.

If Zach had four daughters in 1790 (and that is an if) then he would have been marrid c1782. Does anyone have a real clue as to his first wife's name?

Also does anyone have a real clue as to who this Zach Chandler's parents were? Some say a William Chandler.

I know only a little about the SC Chandlers and that some were Quakers. But the JRR-Joseph-Joel went to Greenville Co, SC. But don't know if there is a connection.

Well, the Zachariah Chandler in question removed to Caldwell Co, KY, by 1810 census where he appears without a wife. Zach married a second time 21 Oct 1817 to Mrs. Elizabeth nee Kelly Boyd.
Zachariah Chandler dies Green Co, KY, in 1837 and leaves will.

The puzzle to all of this is that no one has correctly identified Zach Chandler's family and his first wife.

Has any straight-line Chandler male taken the yDNA test? If so, what CFA group did he fall into?

Does anyone out there know anything about this family?

Thanks. Cheryl
Isaac Chandler who died 1797 in Surry Co, NC, had 17 children, this stated according to his will. Has been stated that only one son, George, was mentioned.

Would seem likely Isaac was married at least twice. Has anyone seen copy of his will. Does it mention Kerrenhappuck as surviving wife.

Also curious as to why many have attached this Isaac Chandler as the one born 1732 in Amelia Co, VA, son of William Chandler died c1747 in Amelia Co and Elizabeth Unknown and as a brother to Thomas Chandler died 1795 in Dinwiddie Co, VA. I know yDNA results place Thomas Chandler in CFA's Group 4. Just wondering how connections were made.
He was a son of John Chandler and Sarah 'Sallie' Shelton. Do you have this info?
David,
Thanks so much for the info you posted on your Chandlers. I am not related to the Chandlers but was interested in them due to the fact that Sarah Sams Chandler had married my 4th Great-Grandfather, Lawrence Effler, after her husband John Wesley 'Jack' Chandler died. I have that 'Jack' died or disappeared in the Civil War, but you probably have better info on this than I do. You mentioned that you have photos of Wesley Chandler and Sarah Sams. Would you share those with me? I would love to have them, especially Sarah's, since she was (for a time) my step-4th grandmother. I hope to hear from you again.

Thank you for the reply. I am interested in knowing if Daniel Dial Chandler had a daughter named Sarah. b about 1821 of Lynchburg, Sumter, SC.
The 1880 census has a daughter of Sarah Chandler Potts ( Mary Potts) living with John Scott ( head) and Eliza J Scott (mother) in Williamsburg, SC. Mary is listed as " cousin". This leads me to believe that her mother Sarah Chandler was sister to Eliza J Chandler Scott. ( widow on the 1880 census)
Do you have any information to verify this? Can you share any information that you have on the Scott/Chandler descendants that might help me with my research?
Thank you very much.
Pat Vause, Daytona Beach, Florida
Thank you. This is helpful. Eliza Ann Chandler who married John Lawrence Scott is listed on the 1880 census in Kingstree, Williamsburg Dist., SC in the home of her son John Scott ( head of household) and Mary Potts is listed in the household as cousin. Mary Potts is the daughter of Sarah Chandler Potts.
on the 1840 census Daniel Chandler is listed on the same page as R. G. POtts, husband of Sarah Chandler.
If you come across any new information I would appreciate hearing it.
Thank you again.
Pat

Please explain curious notation "25 April 1 Edw. I."

In the book, "Chandler Record of the Descendants of George and Jane Chandler, who Emigrated to Pennsylvania from Wiltshire, England, in 1687, with a pedigree of Chandlers of Oare, Wiltshire, 1937," there is a chart of early Chandler descendants on pp. 14-15.

The first Chandler listed is Le Chaundeler de l'Aigle, Normandy.

The 2nd Chandler listed is Nicholas le Chaundeler, 25 April 1 Edw. I.

Can anyone explain what the notation "25 April 1 Edw. I" means ? I am assuming that it refers to some type of records or assessments done during the reign of Edward I, but I would like to know more.

There are other curious notations on this Chandler family tree, such as 9 Edw. I, 7 Edw. III, 17 Rich. II, 8 Hen. VI, and so on. Is there any way to pin-point exactly what dates these strange notations correspond to ?

25 April 1 Edw. I. means 25th April in the first year of the reign of King Edward the first. Care - until 1752 the start of a year was 25th March, so the date 25 April 1 Edw. I. is only one month into that year. Please see the table below for the dates of the reigns of the Monarchs of England/Britain. From this you can see that the reign of Edward I began in 1272, so 25 April 1 Edw. I. was 25th April in the year 1272 which began on 25th March.

Monarchs since the Norman Conquest in 1066
showing the dates of their reigns

House of Normandy
1066-1087 William I
1087-1100 William II
1100-1135 Henry I
1135-1154 Stephen

House of Plantagenet
1154-1189 Henry II
1189-1199 Richard I
1199-1216 John
1216-1272 Henry III
1272-1307 Edward I
1307-1327 Edward II
1327-1377 Edward III
1377-1399 Richard II

House of Lancaster
1399-1413 Henry IV
1413-1422 Henry V
1422-1461 Henry VI

House of York
1461-1483 Edward IV
1483 Edward V
1483-1485 Richard III

House of Tudor
1485-1509 Henry VII
1509-1547 Henry VIII
1547-1553 Edward VI
1553-1558 Mary I
1558-1603 Elizabeth I

House of Stuart
1603-1625 James I
1625-1649 Charles I

1649-1653 Commonwealth/protectorate
1653-1658 Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell
1658-1659 Protectorate of Richard Cromwell

House of Stuart restored
1660-1685 Charles II
1685-1688 James II
1689-1694 William and Mary (jointly)

House of Orange
1694-1702 William III (sole ruler)
1702-1714 Anne

House of Hanover
1714-1727 George I
1727-1760 George II
1760-1820 George III
1820-1830 George IV
1830-1837 William IV
1837-1901 Victoria

House of Saxe-Coburg
1901-1910 Edward VII

House of Windsor
1910-1936 George V (a Saxe-Coburg until 1917)
1936 Edward VIII
1936-1952 George VI
1952- Elizabeth II

Best wishes

Dick Chandler in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada
researching CHANDLER surname family history world-wide.
See http://www.one-name.org/profiles/chandler.html.
Member 2767 of The Guild of One-Name Studies
http://www.one-name.org/ and its Regional Representative
for Canada West
FYI - There is a living male Chandler descendant of Zachariah's presumed brother, William, still living near where they settled in KY whose DNA is a match for a descendant of William Hampton Chandler, who died in Greenville, SC about 1820. He is part of group 7A in the CFA DNA study (presumed descendants of John who came to Jamestown in 1610).
