Info on Charles Chandonnet 1804 Michigan

July 13, 1804, Charles Chandonnet and Charlotte Marcot: son of Andre and Charles (Fichot) Chandonnet: daughter of ______: see No. 49. Charlotte Chandonnet died January 2, 1806, and was buried in the old Roman Catholic Cemetery, on Astor Street. Mr. D.A. Winslow, in his historical sketch of Berrien County, describes the death and burial of Charles Chandonnet as follows: During the war of 1812, and in that year, John B. Chandonai was in the service of the United States, and was engaged in carrying dispatches from Detroit to Chicago. On one of his trips from Chicago, in company with the elder Robert Forsythe, he stopped near the mouth of St. Joseph River, and camped near the upper end of the Burnett orchard. His uncle of the same name, then stationed at Mackinac, but that place being in the possession of the British, was sent by the commandant of that post, with a force of some thirty Indians in canoes, to intercept John B. with the dispatches, and to take him prisoner to Mackinac. This force arrived in the night, and early in morning his uncle called on John B. and made known his business. John B. had a double-barreled gun in his hands, and told his uncle he should not go with him, or be taken prisoner. He then drew a line on the ground, and told his uncle he must not cross it: but his uncle, determined onhis victim, drew his sword and advanced. As he stepped over the line, he was shot dead by the nephew. The report of the gun aroused the Indians, who went to John's camp. He met them as he did his uncle, and speaking their language pointed to his uncle's dead body and to the line: said he had shot his uncle to save his own life. and that he was sorry he had to do it, but if taken prisoner, he himself would have been killed: that he would not be taken alive, and the first one that attempted to cross the line was a dead Indian. The Indians held a council and terms were agreed upon.

Different spellings of Chandonnet

There were 5 other spellings for that name. I have been researching this for a while. Check out the site on my family.com for Chandronnet also. You might find something there. What is your fathers name? Is his family from Canada and other places? Ask him if Victor Isador Chandronet rings a bell. Let me know, I'll help.
Beth

Hi, well I only have one Mary Louisa Chandonnet and she married into the Bresette family which is my husbands side. Do you have any info on the Chandonnet family lines at all??? The Chandonnet family line goes back past 1765 and earlier. They were furtraders from Quebec and lived also in Michigan, Kansas, Indiana, Missouri, Louisiana. It is a very very old family name and has alot of history to it. Please let me know, I have alot of info on the this family line. It goes back to Gatien Chandonnet and his wife who were born and lived in France. Gatien was born in 1646. I look forward to hearing from you, email me at irish-4@swbell.net

Hi, I think I might know something about Mary. I myself am looking for information on her. If I am right on the name, Mary was my great grandmother on my fathers side of the family. I called my grandpa tonight to get more info for my family tree, but he didn't know anything except her name was Mary Garret and she was born in Quebec, living in Muskegon, MI, and married to Oscar Chandonnet. Let me know if I'm right or not......thanks...Meghan

I tried to talk to my dad about it, but he just turned 80 and has some medical problems so he's easily confused. I will, though, continue to check with other family members whenever possible and promise to pass on any info I get. Good luck with your search.

Elaine

Some of the names I remember are Ray, Genevieve, Del, and Alice. I will be attending a get together with my family the first week of March and will try to find out more. Perhaps there's a connection between Joe Chandanais & Pete Chandanais? I'll be in touch when I find out more.

Hello Elaine: I was very excited to read your reply. This is very hard for me to find a date to give you on Rebecca's death. I have a few cousins in Sault Ste. Marie that my mom is trying to find some answers from. I was recently told that her fathers name was pete chandanais. Rebecca married peter grant and had 3girls, and a boy that died shortly after birth. If anything sounds familiar please let me know. My mother was never able to get much information out of her aunts, so we don't know anything about Rebecca's family at all and my grandmother died when I was 8 years old.

Also Charles married Elisabeth Bourget on Jun 13, 1712 and his parents were Gatien Chandonnet and Marguerite Leguay. Have you had a chance to study PRDH. It is online and some of the information is free of charge. It has a large database of vital records prior to 1800.
Ken

Hi ken,
My grandfather, Severin Bourdon was married to
Anna Chandonnet who was born March 24, 1874 in St Pierre les Becquets. She was the daughter of Placide Chandonnet who married Julie Paris 12 OCT 1858 in St Pierre. Placide was the son of Placide [the elder]and Henriette Boucher/ Desrosiers who were married in St Pierre 24 FEB 1835. Placide [the elder] was the son of Basile Chandonnet who married Felicitie Demers/Dumay 22 JAN 1798 in St Pierre. Basile was the son of Etienne Chandonnet and Genevieve Perrault married 7 MAY 1764. Etienne was the son of Charles Chandonnet born 1678 in France and married to Elizabeth Bourget/ Boucher . this from the Blue Drouin and is otherwise unverified. Laurel

Laurel
Olivine married William Choquette in 1883, in Adams, Mass. She was born abt 1862 somewhere in Canada. That is all I have on her. Do you have anymore on Anna?

Alexis Chandonnet married Theotiste Nault on Feb 1 1831 in St Pierre Les Becquets. He was born Dec 27 1801 in Gentilly. His parents were Charles Chandonnet and Louise Beaudet. They were married on Aug 25 1783 in St Pierre les Becquets. Let me know if you need anything else.
Ken

Laurel
We found Olivine in the 1880 census of Adams, Mass living with her brother Isaac. She was born in 1862 and he was born in 1852. He married Lovina ? They had children: Isaac - b1875 in NH, Dolor - b 1877 in Maine and Melina - b 1878 in Mass. According to Olivine's marriage certificate, her parents were Joseph and Louisa C.... I have not yet been able to find any information on them. I did make an attempt to (from The Blue Drouin) record all Chandonnet marriages.
Which Alexis did you need. Is it the one who married Theotiste Nault. If so I can take you all the way back.
Ken

Do we know Olivine's parents names? I think I missed part of this thread. I'm interested in that my grandparents Severin Bourdon and Anna Chandonnet [ parents are Placide Chandonnet and Julie Paris ]married in 1889 in Palmer MA. But Severin Bourdon and some family went through Adams as well.

Do you know who Alexixs Chandonnais parents were?

Erin
So far, I have not been able to find any additional information on Joseph and Louisa to see if they are listed as Chandonnets'. Other than Canada do you have a specific town where they were born? Based upon what you do knw, I believe it is highly probable that Lina and Olivine are the same. Although in genealogy it is very difficult to ever be 100 per cent sure. Ken

Erin
Does the marriage record for William and Olivine list their parents?
In the 1880 census records for Adams, Mass. It lists a Lina Field(born 1862) living with her brother Isaac Field(born 1852). Both were born in Canada. Isaac was married to a Lovina. They had children born in New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. A number of the Descendants of Alexis Chandonnet and Theotiste Nault(married 1831) migrated to the United States and changed their name to Field. Our lines probably meet up with Alexis and Theotiste.
Ken

Thanks for responding Ken and Laurel!

I really do not have much information, but here is what I know...

My GGGrandmother had a brother named William Choquette. His wife was Olivine (Olevene, Liva, Lina).

I have a Marriage Record for William Choquette and Olivine Chandonet in Adams, MA in 1883.
A birth record for Agnes Choquette in Athol, MA in 1897 - parents listed as William Chouguette and Olivinne Chandranet
A Birth record for Richard Choquette in Athol in 1906 - parents listed as Wm Choquette and Oivine Chondronet

I then have a Marriage record for Arthur J Choquette in Athol, Ma in 1910 - lists his parents as William Choquette and Live Field

I have one other death record for William Chaqueeth parents listed as Wiliam and Lina Field (I can't seem to find the year on that though..)

I am trying to determine if these are the same 2 people - everything matches up except the last name.

Thanks ,
Erin
