Creton or Cretan CHANEY age 3 - 1910 census Who he?

Elisha CHANEY listed as step son. Who are these folks?

How are they related to Lon CHANEY, the actor.

Possibly not all the information shared/posted is correct as listed on the various data files on this web site.

See also earlier postings on this message board.

Here listed a copy of the 1910 census.

Patricia
cw
Seems this is a downline to a WARFORD - MILLS - BUCKMAN/BUCHANAN - STOUT - JEWELL family tree.

Wow. That is really good research.

As I mentioned, I am not certain that I connect up with this family or how. I hope I do but so far not anything to really document the relationship. I pick up my Chaney/Cheney's in Mason Co., Kentucky. But with the added information:

1) James Chaney/Cheney listed listed in the 1850 & 1860 census at being born in Pennsylvania in 1785

2) James has a brother Edward - probably older who had a bondsman of William Ricketts. Both James & Edward had dealing with Drake's & Boyd's - surnames also found in Huntingdon Co., PA.

3) ISAIAH Chaney is listed as a bondsman in Mason Co. KY in 1803 and ISAIAH Chiney is listed in the 1810 census there. Is there any possibility that Isaiah & family left for Kentucky after 1793?

There is an Ezekiel Chiney also enumerated in Mason Co.,KY in 1810 (since the census for Mason Co. was surname sorted, don't know if Isaiah & Ezekiel Chiney were neighbors - not Ezekiel looks like possibly young enough to just have married.)

James & Edward were in the 1810 Lewis Co., KY census. James was in the 1820 census but haven't located Edward - son John was born in KY but a couple daughters were listed as being born in Ohio with younger sons being born in Indiana and Illinois and Edward died before the 1850 census.

I did find an Edward Cheney in Greene Co., OH for 1820 and living two doors down from a Thomas Cheney.

I also found in 1820 census, some Chaney/Cheney/Chenney/.. in Champagne Co., OH - some of that county's history mentioned that these people came from Virginia? One was an Isaiah listed. (There was a family Cherry that was also possibly indexed as Chenny.)

Ok, I forgot we did find the parents. I don't have access to ask family members still alive since he'd left his first wife with small children and the kids were scattered, she was only able to get back two. (Ted and David) This is what I do have- b-Aug 24,1890 d-Nov 26,1960. He'd resided -Hardy Township, Holmes, Ohio. He died at Joel Pomerene Memorial Hospital, Wooster, Ohio. His wife was Mary J Estep Ohio. His mother was Lydia A Lawver b-1871 and father was AF Chaney b-1859.

It would kind of help us help you if we knew where. And what kind of information. I would start with the 1900 census if you are looking for his parents. I would suspect there are a lot of George or Harry or Jack Chaneys around. Some details from that obit for a start.

We're looking for information on George Harry (Jack) Chaney B-1890 D-1960. From my understanding, he rarely went by the name of George, mostly by Jack. I found a newpaper article of his obituary, but know nothing more. I'd like to know his parents and beyond. Current family members have no information since this family was torn apart.
I found Gilbert Chainey in Huntingdon Co., PA in 1790. On the same page are listed Isia Chainey and also Edward, Reason, and Chainey Ricketts.

Isia Chainey in 1790 census contained 1 male under 16, 2 males over 16, and 3 females.

I am trying to figure out Isia's family and whether he is the same Isaiah Chaney listed as the bondsman for Suzannah Chaney and Thomas Beatty in 1804 in Mason Co., KY.

Besides Suzannah Chaney's marriage in Mason Co., KY, there are Edward Chaney in 1803, Betsy Chaney in 1807 and James Chaney in 1807 plus a Nancy Chaney in 1814. (Edward & James are strongly connected - brothers. Edward's marriage bondsman was a William Ricketts - related to Isia's neighbors?)

Some people have this James Chaney of Mason Co., KY being the son of Edward Chaney and an Elander BUT I haven't found any appropriate Edward - Rev Edward Chaney seems out of the question.

Wow. How long have you been waiting. Your message doesn't show any responses. Ok. Margaret and George were my great grandparents. Their son Frank is my grandfather. I am not sure who you are related to but there were many children. Their son Frank married my grandmother Rose and Rose's brother married one of my grandfather's sisters. I understand this was not unusual. So I am related to George and Margaret in two ways. Yes there is family in Arizona. My mother used to communicate with a female cousin who lived there. I am doing a family tree on ancestry and can help somewhat with your questions. I have quite a bit but am still piecing it together. Beth

Interestingly I am looking for a Chaney connection too. My great-grandmother's maiden name was Chaney ... Her name was Lizzie Chaney Harper and she lived in Marengo and Clarke Counties, Alabama. She was born about 1840 in North Carolina. From what I understand she was an enslaved Native American (Cherokee) and sold to slave owners in Alabama. She is listed as a Mulatto on most census records. However I have not been able to find any of her siblings, family members with the Chaney surname or any record from before 1870....

Re: Chaneys in Bedford County, PA

Hi Lona. Thanks for replying. I know that Gabriel Chaney left Bedford before 1809 when he is listed as landowner in Highland Co., OH. He also served in the War of 1812 from Highland Co. I don't know what happened to the other 5 Chaney men who are listed in the History of Bedford Co. or how they are related to one another.
I've seen your John L. Chaney listed as John Lewis and a few researchers have tried to make a connection to Lewis Chaney of Broad Top. I don't know what that's based on or if it's accurate or not.
My Alexander Chaney was born in 1789 and the few records I've found for him always list his birth state as PA. There is an Alexander Chaney on the 1820 census there and my family has assumed this is our ancestor, but I don't have any proof. His wife was Margery (Marjorie) Donaldson and she was born in MD. These two people almost certainly are kin to the other Chaneys and Donaldsons who lived in Hopewell and Broad Top Townships, but in nearly 25 years of searching I've not been able to turn up a single clue to connect them to parents or siblings!

Hi, I think we have either exchanged Chaney info or I saw your postings. I've also tried to connect my 2nd great grandfather, John L. Chaney, to the ones in Ohio and Bedford Co., Pa. for a few years and keep hitting that brick wall. I find it interesting that your 2nd great grandfather was Alexander. John L. named his youngest son Alexander. He was born Feb. 10, 1868,in Pa. probably in Armstrong Co. and died April 4, 1887 Pa. He is buried in the Tidal Cemetery, Armstrong Co.,Pa. I don't know the cause of his death.

John L. was b. 1827 Bedford Co. and told his family he was from Broad Top. His father was Richard Chaney who died, I feel, before the 1840 census was taken. By the 1850 census, John L. is living in Armstrong Co., Pa. a single man.

I believe Edward Chaney is the one who moved to Ohio with his family. I don't know about the others. I have collected info from Ancestry, census, newspaper articles, on the ones who continued to stay in Bedford and Huntingdon Co. in hopes one would mention my line in Armstrong Co. but so far no luck.

I'm willing to share the info I've collected.

Lona

My 2nd great grandfather, Alexander Chaney, came to Meigs Co., OH from Bedford Co., PA around 1820. I've tried unsuccessfully for more than 20 years to connect him to one of the Chaney families who lived in Bedford Co. during that time. There are 6 Chaney males named in the History of Bedford County who lived in Broad Top Township. They are Edward, Gabriel, John, Lewis, Greenberry, and Zachariah. I need help to determine how these men are related to each other. Any information will be much appreciated.

I have in my notes that Margaret's Texas Death Certificate # is 30489, it would probably list the funeral home. I also have in my notes that she died 11 November 1909 in Teague, Freestone County, Texas. Does that help?

I can't find the family tree for Henry T. Alexander. Is there any way to send me a link to that tree?

My great grandfather Henry Thomas Alexander was Margaret's oldest brother. I have a news paper, front page story, about Hiram the day He was killed. I was suprised when I read the post about Jennie Ethel Chaney and that she liveed at 508 capitol. My grantmother lived, I belive, in the same block for about 12 yr. The 1900 cencus stated that Margaret was a widow. I do not belive that. Hiram's death certificate was signed by J. E. Childers (sometime spelled as Childress), who I believe was Jennie. Hiram Christian Chaney was the nephew of Hiram Cowden Chaney. Hiram Christian Chaney is buried in Forest Park Lawndale, Houston, TX.

Mark Emanuel Chaney

I am stumped. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a work camp for prisoners in the Muskingum/Coshocton County area of Ohio called "London Farm"?

The reason I ask...

I am looking for my ancestor Mark Emanuel Chaney. The son of Joseph Martin Chaney (1841-1919) and Malissa Ellen Billman(1852-1937), he was born 27 Mar 1887 in Pike Twp., Coshocton Co., Ohio.

According to his WWI Draft Registration Card he was living in Dresden, Muskingum, Ohio in 1917 and working as a farmer.

In Feb 1918 his name appears in the Coshocton Tribune as having a draft classification of 1-A.

However, I have a document (attached to this message) that has his mug shots on one side of a card and his description and notice that he commited larceny in Muskingum county and was sentenced to do time at "London Farms" beginning 28 Oct 1918. It then continues to say that he escaped "London Farm" on 31 Aug 1919 and offers a $25 reward for his capture.

After that he disappears (understandably I guess), until, in 1972, I find notices in the Coshocton Tribune that someone has gone to court and filed to have him declared legally dead.

What I'd like to find out (but so far have had absolutely NO luck) is

(1) What exactly is London Farm & where is/was it?

... and ...

(2) Does anyone have any ideas as to how I would go about finding out more about the circumstances of his arrest, incarceration and subsequent disappearance?

I've been pouring over old newspapers looking for any mention of his case, but so far I've found nothing. Any other suggestions?

Todd

P.S. I have seen his name from time to time on the internet as hiving died in Dresden in 1950, but have been unable to find any proof of that so far... Plus, if he had, then why would someone file to have him declared dead 21 years later?
Re: Chaney Family Ancestry - West Va.

My grandfather was Vincent Verlando Chaney who was (I believe) born in Elkins, WV and lived his life in Charleston, WV as an attorney where he raised his family. He was a senior partner in the firm of Kay, Casto & Chaney and was married to Caroline S. O'Neale. He had a brother who I never met by the name of Bernard(?) who lived in Alabama. His sons, my uncles Michael T. & Malcolm L. Chaney are still alive and both living in Charleston, married and have children. If any further help, my mother was Caroline Stuart Chaney and her sister was Patricia Saunders Chaney, both now deceased.

With respect to the Chaney family, I too am in search of information. My grandfather was Vincent Verlando Chaney, whose father I think was named Thomas Chaney. The only other information I know of is that my grandfather was born in Elkins, WV and had a brother named B. Owen Chaney who lived in Alabama. My grandfather was a long-time resident of Charleston, WV where he worked as an attorney. Aside from this and other rather limited information, I know nothing of my grandfathers' family. His wife's maiden name was Caroline O'Neale. My apologies for not being able to help in your request, but perhaps this information will be of some value to you.
