Chapa Land Lawsuit

In response to anyone wondering about the lawsuit. My family has told me about a lawyer that tried to organize a suit against a south Texas ranch that stole land from the family years ago. I believe it may be a portion of the King Ranch though I am not sure. I can probably find out more by asking around. I live in Austin and am originally from Round Rock. I would be glad to hear from someone so we can share information.

Tony Chapa

Information needed on Cesario Chapa

Hi,

my name is Sonya Chapa and I'm interested in doing my family tree but I'm at a dead end with my great-grandfather Cesario Chapa born around Feb. 25, 1891- died around Aug. 1975. I can't find his birth record since texas records weren't started until 1903. If it helps I'm connected through his son (my grandpa) Gilberto Chapa 1935-2002 whose son was my father Gilbert Chapa jr. 1954- present. Cesario was married to Cruz Rodriguez and I know some of there children's names were Cesario, George, Vicente...and I know I'm forgetting the rest.

I live in Florida, and so do all of Gilberto Chapa's children and grandchildren. All of the rest of the family is in Texas, most in the Hart and Tulia areas I believe.

If you have any information please email me at chopstix.rox@gmail.com

I am looking for information on Ramon Chapa. He is the godfather to Manuel Longoria. Manuel would like to know where his parents are buried as they died when he was young. Manuel was raised by family members and the only names from his past that he has to search by are on his baptismal certificate. Manuel was born Dec. 13, 1911 in Lagarto, Texas; baptised at Sacred Heart Church in Mathis, Texas and his godparents were Ramon Chapa and Maria Tapia.
As you can see this man is not young. Please help me help him before it is too late.

DNA Testing can help to see if we are true descendants of Juan B Chapa

I had my DNA tested a few months ago with the hope that eventually others with the Chapa surname would do the same. The YDNA(testing the male line) test can help us determine if we are related by sharing a recent common ancestor in this case if we are true descendants of Juan Bautista Chapa. So far my dna results point to a parental line of european descent. I encourage everyone to visit the following dna project: http://members.tripod.com/~GaryFelix/index63.htm
Here everyone who is of mexican descent can compare their DNA results with others. thanks Alex Chapa.
MY NAME IS SOPHIA JANKWITZ. MY GRANDMOTHER NAME IS SYLVIA CHAPA WHOS PARENTS NAMES WERE BONIFACIO CHAPA AND JUSTA FLORES. MY FAMILY WAS JUST APPROACH BY ATTORNEYS ABOUT THE LAND IN STARR COUNTY. I WANTED TO GET INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING ON BEFORE WE GAVE MONEY TO THIS ATTORNEY. I KNOW THAT A LOT OF MY MOTHERS COUSINS(CHAPAS) HAVE GIVEN MONEY TO ATTORNEYS FOR THE PAST 50 YEARS. MY MOTHER REMEMBERS STORIES WHEN SHE WAS LITTLE ABOUT THIS LAND. SHE ALSO REMEMBERS THE CHAPA FARM AND VISITING THE LAND IN STARR WITH HER PARENTS AND GRANPARENTS. I KNOW FROM WHAT THIS ATTORNEY IS SAYING IS THAT THEIR IS A CHAPA FAMILY RECIEVING MONEY FROM THE LANDS MINERALS. I JUST DON'T HOW OR WHY THIS ONE FAMILY IS DOING THAT. FROM WHAT I CAN GATHER BACK IN THOSE DAYS PEOPLE GOT RIPPED OFF AND I THINK THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED. ANYWAYS I WANTED SOMEONE TO EMAIL ME SO SHARE INFORMATION. I'M JUST NOW STARTING AND ITS HARD TO GET INFORMATION ESPECIALLY FROM BACK THEN. ITS NOT SO MUCH ABOUT THIS LAND, BUT ABOUT THE ROLE THIS FAMILY HAD IN TEXAS HISTORY. PLEASE EMAIL WITH ANY INFORMATION YOU ALL HAVE.

THANKS

SOPHIA
1st Annual Chapa Reunion

Hello everyone. Let me start off by introducing myself. My name is Brenda Jimenez-Smith, I reside in Houston, Texas. I am a direct descendant from Joaquin Chapa. As most of you, may have come to realize you yourself are as well. Well all my newfound cousin's and tia's and relatives...I am in the process of organizing our very own 1st Annual Chapa Family Reunion!! I am trying to set this for sometime in September, 2001. If anyone is interested, please send me an email at ChapaReunion@cs.com If anyone is interested in attending, please email me your name, email address, and the amount of people that you would like to bring. That way I can have some sort of idea on what I am going to have to work with. Any long lost cousins, brothers uncles, realtives. Everyone will be invited. I am not exactly certain on the location, although I may try and organize it in Kinsgville, Texas, as it is where my grandfather and my great grandmother still reside. They have a very big park and an indoor pavillion. Anyone who is interested in helping organize this organization, please email me immediately. So that we can dicuss this in detail. Meanwhile, let everyone know, and get their names and numbers together, so that once we decide on what date, we can issue out all the detailed information. I am going to start working on this immediately!!! So once again... please help me. Anyone you think might be interested, relay this message. Hopefully things will go well and I will be able to post new information every week. Once again... I need to form a commitee, so if anyone is interested or has any experience, please contact me either by email BrndSmith@cs.com, or by telephone (281) 416-0288. Thank ya lots!!! I hope to meet you all very soon!!!

Hi Chapas,

My name is Fernando Chapa and I am trying to find a link between me and other Chapa ancestors.

I hope someone can point me in the right direction:

Here is the info I have:

My Great Great Grandparents are:

Melchor Chapa & Maria Del Refugio (I would like to know who their parents were). Melchor & Maria were probably born in the mid to late 1800's (maybe even very early 1900's).

Melchor & Maria had at least 4 Chapa children :

Roberto (married Maria Teresa Casas), Maria Alicia, Oscar, and Olivia (all were probably born before 1920)

My dad, who is the grandson of Roberto, was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, so all these relatives may be from that area.

Any information that you may have that would help me link these people to other Chapas would be awsome.

Thanks,
Fernando Chapa
fernando@chapa.com

Linda,

You can start your search at the Clayton Library in Houston. Also you can request Catholic records from the Catholic Archives in Austin, or San Antonio...its been awhile since i got ours from them. It will save you a lot of time. They charge you like $8.00 dollars for your search and will send you a copy if they have it. The Clayton library has books from most of the counties down south. The books will tell you were you can obtain a copy of your record. I found most of our records at the church in Roma, Texas and the church in Mier, Mexico. You can call the Catholic church in Roma and they can look for you. Also the Rio Grande court house has marriage records. I hope this helps you out.

I would truly appreciate any information anyone can give me on the Francisco Chapa and Juana Maria Martinez family. (married September 12, 1786) I have traced my mothers mothers family back to them but have hit a stumbling block and can go no further with any kind of certainty. I know it will end up with Juan Bautista Chapa and Beatriz Olivares but I think I am missing a generation to get to them. Help..........................and Thank you!

Books on the Chapa's

Lately there seems to be a lot of interest in the background of the Chapa family. Did everyone gasp when they learned we are actually Italian instead of Spanish. The big question is why was the name shortened by Juan Bautista to Chapa?

Here are some books of interest
"Texas Northeastern Mexico, 1630-1690" by Juan Bautista Chapa & edited by William C. Foster.
"Spanish Expeditions Into Texas 1689-1768" by William C. Foster.

Did you know that Chapas served in the Civil War? And one on each side at that.
"Vaqueros in Blue" by Jerry D. Thompson

"Tejano Legacy, Rancheros & Settlers in South Texas, 1734-1900" by Armando C. Alonzo mentions a Chapa who helped establish the Mier settlement.

"A Wild and Vivid Land" by Jerry Thompson has a map on page 31 showing a Chapa ranch.

" Tejano Empire, Life on the South Texas Ranchos" by Andres Tijerina also mentions a couple of Chapa's.

"Tejano Journey, 1770-1850" edited by Gerald Poyo is of general interest.

The last book does not mention Chapa's but it is a fictional book about the ranchero life during the Texas revolution. It called by "Caballero" by Jovita Gonzalez which was written back in the 1930's. While the other books are recent, this one is hard to find and out of print. This is a very remarkable book and would be a great movie if Hollywood ever discovers it.

Lefty Ray Chapa
San Antonio, Texas
Chapa/Cardenas

I am looking for information on the family of Simon Cardenas and Leonisa Chapa who were both born and died in Mexico, possibly Chihuahua. They must have been born during the 1860s and married sometime in the 1880s because they had at least one daugher "Julia Cardenas" who was born on June 19, 1884. Julia married Ricardo Salas and had several children. At least one of their children and possibly all of them were born in Jimenez, Chihuahua. After her husband died, Julia migrated to the United States in 1915, living in El Paso, Texas until her death on October 6, 1950. Thank you for any help.
chapa-montemayor marriages

Mormon genealogy records show at least four marriages between Chapa and Montemayor families. Marriages were performed in the mid 1800's in Marin, Nuevo Leon. One of these couples is Julio Chapa and Maria de los Angeles Montemayor (my ancestors). Julia and Maria had several children, among them Maria Prisiliana, Ma Clemencia, Jose Bacilio, Jose Blas. The other marriages include Julio Chapa and Concepcion Montemayor, Jesus Chapa and Salvadora Montemayor, and Jose Maria Chapa and Catarina Montemayor. I understand I might have Montemayor relatives in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. and possibly in Marin, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. If anyone has info please e-mail me.

Hi , from Arizona I'm doing some research on the Chapa family (I'm Blanca's son-in-law) and I have found some information about a Norman P. Brown Collection of two boxes of information on the Chapa family. But I'm in Arizona and it's in Edinburg, Texas. So I'm listing it here maybe it will help someone else who could then let me know what they find.
Contact the Special Collections Clerk, Rio Grande Valley Historical Collection, University Library, University of texas Pan-American, 1201 West University Drive, Edinburg, Texas 78539-2999
Box 1: Chapa Family Notebooks, volumes 1 through 4
Box 2: A study of the descendants of Juan Bautista Schiapapria (Chapa)

I am looking for information about my great-grandparents, Juan Chapa, and Modesta Farias. I believe they were married in Atascosa County Texas or Wilson County, TX, sometime in the early 1900s. They had several children, one being my grandpa, Manuel Chapa, who was born in 1914. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am particularly interesting in knowing when/where they were married. Thank you!

Hi, my name is Olga Gonzales, I am a Chapa on my mother's side. Her father Pablo was born in Mier and his father was Juan de Dios Chapa. Am looking for family links. Juan de Dios had 4 children before he married my greatgrandmother (Emilia Bravo.) His first wife (may have been Mariana) He had 4 children by her. Their names were Isabel, Hermina, Daniel and Tomas. They all moved to Corpus eventually from Mier. Isabel and her family ran a club in Corpus back in the 30's by the name of Copa Cabana. Also Isabel had a son Daniel Torres who at one time was sheriff of Raymondsville. My Aunt an Uncles lost touch with them and now I am looking for them. Please let me know if anyone out there has any info.
Thanks
Olga Gonzales Austin, Texas

Maria Rafaela and Jose Cayetano Chapa

Received information from Mira Smithwick, President of "Spanish American Genealogical Association" on José Cayetano Chapa. José Cayetano is my Gr. Gr. Gr. grandfather and on pedigree papers pulled down from the Internet, titled only as "Descendants of Juan Bautista Chapa" it listed only one José Cayetano Chapa in the papers and this José Cayetano was the son of Florencio Chapa the son of Joaquin Chapa. Unless there is more than one José Cayetano Chapa and if not then that information is false.

The José Cayetano Chapa of my line, father of José Germano Chapa and grandfather to Maria Rafaela Chapa, is the son of Nicolas Chapa and Maria Gertrudis Treviño.

The information I acquired was off of a baptismal record. It shows that José Germano Chapa was born on May 30, 1799 to Cayetano Chapa and Maria del Carmen Buentello. Jose Cayetano married Maria del Carmen Buentello on Nov 21, 1798 in Guerrero.

Maria del Carmen Buentello is the daughter of Luis Buentello and Maria Juliana Solis. Carmen died and José Cayetano re-married, his second wife was Maria Guadelupe Gonzalez the daughter of Francisco Gonzalez and Maria Melchora Herrera. So for some of my relatives this solves the mystery of José Cayetano's bloodlines.

Sincerely

Rodolfo José Villalba y Gutierrez Aguirre Garcia Escobar Palacios

I found this name on my grandmother's Certificate of Baptism. Lina Chapa was listed as being a "sponser". The other sponser listed was Pablo Prumeda. The Document is dated 1/17/26 and took place in Kingsville, Tx at the St. Martin Church. I'm not sure if anyone was interested in this information. I am researching my own grandmother's past (she was very secretive) and not sure if Lina may have been a relative to my grandmother Maria Margarita Davila (born 6/27/25). If you have any information please let me know by e-mail. Thanks.

I am looking for information on my grandfather, Jesus Chapa Badillo. I have very little information on him. I know he came from Mexico (Pachuca?) and ended up living and dying in Laredo, Texas. I have no information on his parents or really on him. If anyone has any information, I'd love it.
