Several of us have much more information on them. Check through the old messages and you should find them. Looking quickly, i see responses from Patsy Scott and Gary Chapel, both of whome are in this line if I remember correectly. I also know quite a bit about them and their children, and have photographed their tombstones.

Hi Connie, I sure am interested. My son was able to go to a cemetery this summer out side of New London. It had a lot of Chappell's buried there, including Lt. Caleb Chappell & wife Ruth Royce Chappell. Is there any connection there? The first one that came over was George Chappell, Caleb's father in 1635.
I have been a member of Ancestry for about three years, and this is the first that I have come across this group of Chapels, Chappell & my maiden name of Chaple,

Are you a member of the NEHGS? If you are, it would be on their website, American Ancestors.org If you are not a member, I strongly urge you to join.

The NEHGS library is probably the largest genealogical society libary in the country (SLC is not a genealogical society library). It is certainly the largest for New England. I believe it is also the the largest genealogical society now that many others like NGS, NYG&B, have given up their buildings and their libraries. It is certainly the best place to research New England families. I aim to go their 4 times a year--mised July due to conflicts with work, but am planning on October. I often do Chapel research when there.

If you do not have access to the websire, and do not want to join the society, I have a copy of the article which I could scan into my computer (when at work Tuesday with the high speed copier-scanners) and send to you--just need your email address. Mine is BarbaradeMare@yahoo.com. You can send it to me there if you wish.

Barbara

If you give me your email, I wil scan it to you

Barbara,
How do I go about getting this article? Can I order it from somewhere? I have written down all of that info.
Now, Is there a chance your William Chapel is William H.H. Chappell. Probably not, with the spelling of the last name. I was in Logan, Utah LDS library this summer, and got several pages on the Chappell from "Record of New London County" 1905. I have a photo of the William H.H. Birth date was Nov. 1, 1840.
O.K. realized he isn't the same as I reread article & found out his birth date.

After Noah, I just have the names and dates of virth of his children.

It is interesting that both George Chappell and my ancestor, William Chapel, ended up in New London at the same time. Unfortunately for me, more is known about George.

I am 90% sure I came from George Chappell, who came to the new world in 1635 at Massachusetts Bay. Moved to Wetherfield, CT. by 1637, then on to Pequot.around 1649. One of his sons Lieut. Caleb Chappell 1671-1733) came out of Lebanon. One of his sons was Noah Chappell which is my line. What I don't have much info on is the next generation..Simon (Chapel)(1730-) who came from Lebanon. He was the father of Stephen Chapel 1785-1843. Stephen was the father of another Stephen Chapel1807-1873) who was the father of Henry Chapel( Chaple).1844-1930, my great grandfather. It's at the Stephen Sr. I start to see NY. I sure hope you can follow all of that.

I know I have been sent a photo of the Richard Chapel tombstone, but not sure about his wife. I have a list of who is in the cemetery, and have marked the names in which I am interested, but need to pull that out and look at it. It is in one of my four Chapel notebooks where I have the stuff I have organized and indexed. Too tired now that I made irt through a very long week! Will try over the weekend.

Barbara

I would be interested in seeing any of the photos you might have collected in Ct. Henry Chapel (great grandfather) was living in Bolivar, NY but after the Civil war he moved to Fitzgerald, Ga. I have tracked them from Ct. before they landed in NY. Any chance you are from that group of Chapel's?

Gary,

If you send me your email address, I will send you what I have. It is too long to put it in here--I preared a report from TMG going back 5 generations. It was done awhile ago, and some before I converted from Family Tree Maker to TMG, which conversion lost the citations for parents-children. This one I have no t researched since, as my ancestry is through the 2nd wife of Richard Chapel, Sarah Smith. I have verified that Richard married Grace in New London fron New London Church Records. They must have mpoved to Sandisfield about 1775, as the first child was born New London 1774 and the second Sandisfield 1776. I did not include the children in the report as far as I can tell, but could revise it to incluse that information if you wish. I have also not proofread the report, so it is as it comes out of the computer. Since I worked on this families I have made changes to the "sentences" which are the way in which the material prints in a report.

Finally, I see a lot of the sources are "American Ancestry of the Chapel and Kindred Families of _____ New England" by E.P. Chapel, a secondary source I do not recall to be necessarily accurate. If Baker is included, I know he has many mistakes. It has been years since I researched the Leach family, but know Baker has the Richard Chapel ancestry wrong, and also errors in the Comstock family. Another unreliable source as he relied heavily on Baker is my Uncle Bill, William Chapel. He spent many years writing his book, but it was before computers, etc., and also has tons of errors, not only from using poor sources like Baker, but in his own research, or perhaps his writing of it (has a father born before a son for instance).

Barbara

PS: my email address: BarbaradeMare@yahoo.com

I know they are the same--have done a lot of research on this family, and spent a lot of time in Sandisfield. It took me a long time to be sure but finally had definitive proof. "Jr" was used differently in those days than it is now. His son Richard with Grace also became Jr.

I have tons of deeds, wills, tombstone photos, etc for this Richard Chapel.
Chapel is one of those unusual names in our early history where spelling does matter. They all seem to have been literate, and were very careful to distinguish the two families, descendants of William Chapel and descendants of George Chappell. The important difference is the number of "P"s. Although both George and William appeared in New London at about the same time, more is known of George before his appearance there than of William. Descendants of both migrated to southern Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and both families also had settlers in and about Avon, in western New York. But the spelling differences remain to this day. The number "l"S on the end is insignificant as are various other slight differences.

You can browse through my tree "colwell" and one I just started to track this lineage "Original Chappell settlers" I have come by so much info so quickly the tr4ee has a few errors I have yet to correct. However, I went to New London, Uncsville, Montville and the like, connecticut and took a bunch of pics of chapel graves. There are over 300 Chapels buried in Connecticut, depending upon how it's spelled. check out "Find-a-grave" On the web. I'll try and catch up soon. I knew there had to be whalers in this family!!!
Connie

My Grandmother was Helen M. Chapel, who married Alexander Ross Benson of Hudson New York. Her father was Edward Chapel, a captain of a whaling ship, and he was lost at sea. His wife's name may have been Sarah. I don't know if he was based in New London CN or Hudson, NY, anoher whaling port. He and his familly lived in Hilo, Hawaii at some point. this was in the late 19th century. I am guessing he was born in about 1835.
Any information or news from fellow descendants would be very welcome.

Sincerely, Ann Chapel Osgood Howland

The Eugene Chapel Genealogy has Richard Chapel Jr b 3/8/1751 who Married Grace Douglas b 4/8/1753. It does not list any Crignons. I don't see any of the descendants you have listed coming from that marriage. I can send an electronic copy of the Eugene Chapel Genealogy, but do not know how to do it through this forum.

Hello - I am back researching this family, and discovered your message!

I have some information that links Mary Ann Chappell to some of the Horle families found in Skaneateles.

I believe all these families are related, and that they emigrated to the US from Banwell, Somerset England. I am interested in these families as I am a direct descendant of Thomas Horle, born 1821 in Banwell, to James and Sarah (maiden name unknown) Harl/Horl/Hurl.

I have more details if you would like to discuss.

Betsey Chapel was Philemon’s wife and gave birth to 8 children in the house all living to maturity.

Richard Chapel and Grace Douglas were Betsey’s parents. While I know lots about the Sage side of the family I know nothing about the Chapel side beyond Grace’s parents names.

Any thoughts on where to look?

Cheers:

Jim
I have information on the Chapel family connecting information provided by Theron T. Chapel in 1971 to Edith S. Wessler on his line back to Julius Chapel, s/o Lorenzo Dow Chapel and Margaret Clapp, and Mary Louisa Joslin, d/o Williiam Brown Joslin, b. 6 Sep 1814, d. 1892 in Springport MI, and Mary K. Brigham. William was s/o Israel Joslin, b. 1776 and Sally Brown. This Israel was s/o Benjamin Joslin, b. 2 Jun 1753 and Susannah Robinson, who had 10 children. Benjamin was s/o Israel Joslin, b. 1719 and Mary Brown. The Colonial immigrant ancestor of this line was Israel Joslin, b. ca. 1693, d. Aug 1761, who m. 18 Dec 1718 Sarah Bayley/Bailey, of Boston,d/o Joseph Bayley, b. England, and they settled in Connecticut. They settled in Killingly CT.

Now your name rings a bell! Don't believe all the stuff you read on line that does not have sources, especially royal connections. There actually are some royal connections in the Chapel or Douglas line (forget which at the moment, and getting ready for work,)as set forth in the Plantagenet book. The name that leads to them is escaping me at the moment.

I have a lot of information on Richard Crignon, including his will. I also have his ancestry back to England. If you would like, I can do a report for you from my genealogy program (TMG).
I only have Chapels that go back to Richard Crignon Chapel, dates unknown. but his son would be Joseph Richard Chapel born 5/8/1786 Sandisfiel, Mass. county of Berkshire. There is more info on Richad Crignon, but have not had time to communicate with another person on these posts to get it.If this is your line, I show that one of Crignon's wifes was Grace and that is on my line.
