Origin of the Chapin name

A second thought. When I was in the Paington church I was asked to sign a log book containing the names of all the Chapins who had previously made this same pilgrimage. The person who had signed in just before me was named Roger Chapin and gave his address as a town in France, the name of which I don't recall.

This might further support that the name originated in France.

One other "fact",I've heard the name chapin stood for those who carved the wooden shoes worn in France and Belgium. Who knows!

Wilda Augusta (Chapin) Mount (married 1905 Haven, KS) father of the bride: Milton Chapin

Wedding Bells.

One of the most delightful and enjoyable affairs of the season was the pretty home wedding which occurred on Wednesday March 1st at the beautiful country home of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Chapin about four and a half miles from Haven. In the presence of seventy guests, at high noon, their youngest daughter, Wilda Augusta was united in marriage to Edward D. Mount.

Preceded by Miss Lida Moore and Mr. George Lenert, the bridal party entered the spacious double parlors, to the strains of the wedding march played by Miss Eddie of Hutchinson, and beneath an arch decorated for the occasion, Rev. Buck performed which made the young people one for all time to come.

The bride was daintily gowned in white silk with bridal veil and carried a bouquet of bride’s roses. The groom was attired in conventional black. The bride’s maid was charming in a gown of white over pale yellow, and carried yellow roses. After the ceremony and Mr. and Mrs. Mount had received the congratulations of their friends, the guests were invited to the dining room where the wedding feast was spread.

In the dining room the colors pale yellow and white were in evidence throughout.

The bride’s table was a picture of itself not only in the decorations, but also in the goodies that were provided to satisfy the inner man. Long ropes of yellow and white crepe paper were twined from each corner of the table and fastened together at the ceiling with yellow and white roses, while here and there over the table large fern leaves were placed their glossy greens contrasting beautifully with the snowy whiteness of the cloth.

The presents were numerous and valuable thus showing with what high esteem the young people were held throughout the community.

The bride as stated before, is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chapin and in describing her there is only one thing to be said to know her is to love her. The groom is an enterprising young farmer and is to be congratulated on winning such a lovely girl to be the queen of his home. Mr. and Mrs. Mount will reside on a farm south of Haven.

Haven Weekly Journal
Haven, Reno County, Kansas
Saturday, March 11, 1905
page – 1 *** column – 3

-------------------------

Haven Priest Cemetery
Haven Township
Haven, Reno County, Kansas

Edward L.
Susan Dixon Case Obit (with John Chapin relative)

Found in the "Auburn Daily Advertiser,"Auburn, N.Y., (Cayuga Co.) Wednesday, December 23, 1908, pg. 7 (From the Buffalo Express)

SAW FOUR WARS, Former Auburnian died in Illinois at Ripe old age.
Mrs. Susan DIXSON CASE, one of the oldest settlers of Erie County, died December 6, 1908 at the home of her eldest daughter, Mrs. C. J. Vinecke, Galesburg, Ills. Mrs. Case was 96 years of age and up to within a few weeks of her death has enjoyed the best of health. She was a representative of an old Revolutionary family; her Grandfather, Anthony Palmer, having served with the Maryland volunteers, and died from a wound received from the British near Baltimore during the war. At the time of Mrs. Case's death, five generations of her family were living. Susan Dixson Case was born in the Town of Clarence, Erie County, April 13. 1812. At that time the place was a part of the "Holland Purchase," Clarence then included Alden and Lancaster. The log house in which she was born still stands on what is called the Wall farm, one and one-half miles southeast of the village of Clarence Hollow. Here her father, James Dixson, settled in 1809-10, coming into the country from Maryland by the way of Cumberland valley to the Susquehanna river, near what is now Harrisburg, Pa., and up the river to the Chemung valley, thence to the headwaters of the Genesee and down to Genesee falls, now Rochester, thence west to Clarence. This journey was made with two ox teams and wagons, and two saddle horses. Dixson brought with him from Maryland, two black slaves, Jim and Joe. The blacks ran away a few years after coming to Clarence and escaped to Canada. Dixson gave them their freedom and they returned later to visit him. James Dixson was living on this land when Buffalo, then a small village at the mouth of Buffalo Creek, was burned.

November 30, 1834, Susan Dixson married Colonel James Ely CASE, who died August 17, 1875. Seven children were born of this marriage, but with the exception of three, all have since died.Mrs. Case continued to live near her old home until after the death of her husband and in the year 1890, she removed from the home of her youngest son, H.J. Case at Auburn to Everett, Mich, the home of a daughter Mrs. Julia Turner. At Mrs. Turner's death she went to live with another daughter Mrs. C.J. Vinecke at Galesburg, Ills., where she remained until her death.
She is survived by one son H.J. Case of Auburn and the two daughters, Mrs. Katherine Vinecke of Galesburg, Ills., and Mrs. Caroline Smith of Edinburgh, Pa.
Also by twelve grandchildren: Mrs. I.E. Pearson, W.C. Case and Mrs. C.H. Manro of Auburn, N.Y.; W.E. Case of Waverly; H.J. Case of N.Y. City; Mrs. Caroline J. Norton of Galesburg, Ills.; Mrs. Harrit L. Kennedy of Nome, Alaska; Mrs. Ada K. Estas of Galesburg, Ills.; Mrs. Katherine R. Willetts of Brookline, Mass.; Mrs. Arthur T. Rockefeller and Mrs. Granville A. Richardson of Roswell, N.M. and Ely Bennett of Buffalo, N.Y.; and twenty great grandchildren, S.I., Nina, James T., John C. and Jo Sayles Rockefeller; Donovan Richardson, Genevieve Kennedy, G.V. Estas and James E. Willetts: Willard C., Laura K., Hugh E., George C., Wheeler K., H.J., Mary J. and Robert Pearson; Almet M., and John M. Case and Philip C. Manro. One great great grandchild, Isabelle M. Pearson.
Mrs. Case became a member of the Baptist Church of Clarence at the age of 18 years and attended church at Hunt's Corners, north of Clarence village from the time the church was erected up to the time she left the locality. Born during the War of 1812, she lived to see four wars come and go; 1812, the Mexican war, the Civil war and the Spanish war.
Following a short funeral service in Galesburg, Dec. 8th, the body of Mrs. Case was brought to Crittenden, Erie Co. where services were held at her old home before she was laid beside her husband James E. Case, who died there 33 years ago. Mrs. Parintha Case Chapin, youngest sister of James E. Case and wife of the late John Chapin of Buffalo was present at the funeral.
The grandfather of James E. Case, Daniel Case of Canton, Hartford County, Conn., also served in the Revolutionary army.

Mrs. Case has seen Erie county grow from a vast wilderness to a properous farming and manufacturing county, and has seen Buffalo grow from a small village to one of the first cities of importance on the frontier. During her time the Erie Canal was built and steamship navigation, the railroad, the telegraph and electricity were developed.

Richard Glen Chapin b.3/31/1890

My Grandmother's bother was Richard Chafin. But family history had his last name spelled wrong on his records. I haven't found any link to him after 1910. So in a effort to find him I have been looking at names that are close to his. Bring me to Chapin.

Well I found a Richard Glen Chapin born in WI. I sent for his military records in hopes they would show him to be my Richard. Well he is not.

Bad news for me but good news for some one. I have his military record if any one would like it. His father is Earl and his mother is Susie. They are for Burlington, Wis.

Please contact me if this is a relative and you would like his World War I record.

Sable, Zable, Mason, Lyons, Marsh, Reeves, Mkrobrad, Chapin

I have researched my father's lineage and have started on my mother's. All the information I have received and found is accurate, to the best of my knowledge.

My lineage: Henry Sable (Zable)(1830) married Phoebe Charlotte Mason (1834) - son - Adelbert (Delbert) Sable (1860) married Annie Lyons (1863) - son - Orion (Orin) Sable (1886) married Susie Marsh (1888,1889) - Hazel Viola Sable (April 26, 1922) married my Frank Reeves and had two children Frank and Frances; divorced and married Louis Mkrobrad (not sure if they had any children) who died in Europe during WWII. She had a daughter (JoAnn Dulyea-married name born in July 1945); which she adopted out. See then married my father Robert Wheeler Chapin (February 17, 1917)(Chicago, IL) on February 3, 1946. They had 12 children; of which I am one. However, details are sketchy as my mother passed when I was nine years old and we were sent in various foster homes. Robert Wheeler Chapin III (March 3, 1944), Phillip Maxson Chapin (September 22, 1947), Marvin (died in March 1951-house fire), Claudia (died in March 1951 - house fire), Theodore (died in March 1951 - house fire), Linda Lee (died 7 weeks after birth - pneunomia), Robin Lynn (November 7, 1950), Colleen Jill (December 12, 1952), Carl Herbert (January 20, 1954), Karen Leigh (November 10, 1955), William Charles (September 6, 1958) and Kathleen Marie (November 6, 1963).

Any information on her marriages and children would be greatly appreciated. I do know that she started dating my dad in 1943; but did not marry until 1946 when he came back from the services. I am looking for information on her parents, her siblings, my siblings and my mother's marriages and children from these marriages. Basically just about anything and everything.

I find it fascinating in looking at the past.

Cecil Chapin born 3-18-1894. On his marriage certificate he lists his place of birth as Jamestown, NY. And his parents are listed as Harry Chapin and Hattie Schermerhorn. I contacted Jamestown requesting a birth record but they had none. On his WWI draft registration he lists Buffalo, NY as his place of birth, they also came up empty when I queried.
I have searched 1880 - 1920 census records and have never found Harry and Hattie together. By the 1900 census, Cecil, who was 6, was living with a another family in Cleveland, OH. Therefore I have reached my brick wall on that side. Any info on Harry or Hattie would start to fill out this line.

Harold Chapin, American Dramatist, died WWI (1915)

Harold Chapin was an American citizen who fought and died for England at Loos, 26 Sept. 1915. I believe his mother, Alice Chapin,( author, actress and friend of my mother), was British. His wartime letters to his family, particularly, his young son (Dear Val") were remarkable. He was a successful playwright in NY City for many years before his death.I'm wondering if "Val" had children .Family interests were music and Theatre. Appreciate any help.

While doing some look ups here in Denver I came across a strange happening. Mary Jane Chapin, daughter of Howard C. and Louise Chapen of Denver,Colorado, eloped and married Homer Edwin James on 15 Mar. 1905 in Denver County. But, when looking at the marriage license she is listed as Mary Jane Bohonnon.
I have newspaper articles to corroborate this.
Would love to know the story of why this name? LOL
Good Hunting Everyone,
Frank
I am not related to any Chapin's
Mine is Henry. I would like to know and follow the line of Henry down past Chapin book. I would like to know all of those that are researching from Henry or any of his other children. I will make a list of researchers that might be able to help each other with documents, pictures, family history etc that they have found. Sound good? I think it is fun to link up and help others.

Someone asked awhile back if anyone has added to the Chapin books? Well I would like to see the Chapin family associatiion come back to life. At this time I'm trying to find out where it would be registered. Any one know where I might look let me know.

Looking to ascertain parentage of Persis Chapin and Mary Electa Chapin. I believe they were sisters. Both girls were in Ohio by 1822 and both were married that year. Persis to Levi Duke and Electa to Joseph Barnum.
According to Licking County Ohio records both were born in Homer in NY but their families originally came from Massachusetts.
Been trying to determine if any connection to Gideon or Luke Chapin of Cortland County. Also curious if any connection to Jonathan Chapin b. 1738 in Palmer Mass who had a son named Gideon.
Jonathan's childrens names parallel the names of the children Electa Chapin and husband Joseph Barnum had.
Augustin, Persis, Jotham, etc.
Any tips or leads much appreciated.

If anyone has time to look into his or her book I would appreciate some help.
I know Chloe Taylor, born Aug 5th 1807 /died Dec 16 1885, is a descendant of Samual Chapin.
She is mentioned in The Chapin genealogy book as marrying Otis Chilson May 8th, 1825. It goes on to list their children.
The book tells Otis was born in Glocester RI on Dec 2, 1797.
I CAN NOT find record of Otis birth and parents. Does this book have reference as to where Otis' information was obtained or who his parents are? Glocetser RI Town Hall does not have this record. I would very much like to find out who his parents were and if the book says anything more about the Chloe/Otis family.........
Anxious to hear from anyone that can look that up for me.
Thanks
Char

Does anyone have any additional information on them or can anyone help solve the mystery as to who his parents are...

Two Volume Chapin Genealogy

In 1924, Gilbert Chapin (and others) published a great two-volume genealogy of the Chapin family starting with Deacon Samuel's arrival from Devon, England in the 1630s. Does anyone know if the information in these two large books has been entered into a database of any sort? Also, has anyone attempted to add to this information (adding info from 1924 on or filling in gaps in the volumes)??

I am a direct descendant of Deacon Samuel Chapin. My ggrandfather's name was Sydney Herbert Chapin, born February 23 (year unknown). He married Violet Marion Hughes (date unknown) in England. They had 3 daughters, one died in infancy and one was my grandmother Margarita Elina Chapin, she was born in Guatemala, Central America. Sydney Herbert's father's name was Sydney Herbert Chapin, born September 23, 1847 in Union Village, NY, he died July 26, 1890 and is buried in the family plot in NY. Sydney Herbert (the father) was married to a Ellen Sapphire Merrill of Boston. She died Dec. 19, 1943 in California and is also buried in the family plot. Sydney is a direct descendant to Deacon Samuel Chapin's son Japhet who was born Aug. 15, 1642 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Mass. Stories told to me say that my ggrandfather was the black sheep of the family. I am looking for information on both father and son, birth, marriage, death etc.

Anyone looking for information on the decendants of Roger Chapyn/Chapin, should go the the GENCIRCLES web page.
It is a free database and has a wealth of information on this family.
I am a decendant of Roger Chapyn/ Chapin through Gershom Chapin, son of Joseph Chapin and Mary Nelson. This line is limited at GENCIRCLES, but I will be happy to share with anyone who is interested.
Levi H. Chapin born in Mass moved to New York then Wis.

Hello everyone. Hopefully I have the most luck with this part of my family since they seem to have a lengthy history here in this country.

My great-great-great grandfather was Levi H. Chapin born in Heath Massachusetts in Aug 19 1809. He died and was buried in Symco Wisconsin. In between he moved to New York and married Betsy Durfee. They had 4 children 3 of which were born in Leon, NY. I have heard that his travels took him through Pennsylvania and Ohio. Betsy died in Wisconsin in the late 1850's or early 1860's and Levi sent back to New York for her sister Loraine to take care of the children. They married in 1861 but never had any children. Please if anyone has information contact me! Thanks!

John Baptiste Chapin

Looking for information on John Baptiste Chapin whose daughter Augustine Chapin married Charles A. Powell 18 Sept. 1845 in St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in Florissant, St. Louis Co., Mo. I can't read Augustine's mothers name. Charles parents are listed as Willis J. Powell and Delphine Powell. In the 1850 census Augustine is listed as age 22 so she would have been about 17 at time of marriage. Their children in the 1850 census were Charles age 4 and Lucinda age 2. My ggrandfather was born in Dec. of that year thus not in the census.
