I found, later in the day, one answer to my question. Gibert Chapin attributes the numbering system to Orange Chapin , an earlier genealogy, 1860. He also doesn't use an "X" when there are ten or more children, as Henry does.
But the system is essentially the Henry system.

Patricia O'Brien-Chapin Libutti
libutti@gmail.com
www.obrienz.blogspot.com

Thank you!

Glad to take a quick tour of the numbering systems used in genealogy. This, does, indeed, look like the Henry System In the Chapin Book, each number has a dash between it and the next number. Gilbert Chapin published in 1924, Henry in 1935. Like many good ideas, there were probably many variations.

My mother was a Chapin (me,.too, different name),and I am interested in the activities of the new Chapin Family Society. When I got the Chapin Familty Books in Dublin, Ireland, there was an application form in the book for the old fmily society, headed by Gilbert Chapin (85 years too late). Grandparents handed me the family listing, code, with my Mother and I added on:1-1-3-2-5-2-6-6--5-2-1.
Does anyone use this anymore, in their family tree?

Addison S. Chapin

Hi, I'm new to this Chapin message board and have tried to read all the posts. Sorry if I am repeating a message someone already posted.

I'm looking for the ancestors of Addison Chapin. He married "Rose" in Indiana in 1899. Rose later marries a Hugh Munro and her three children, Charles Chapin, Lula Chapin and Addison Jr. live with them in Chicago. Not sure if Addision Sr. died or there was a divorce.

I think Addison was born in 1842 in Pennsylvania.

THANKS
seoyoder@hotmail.com

Do you have any idea what happened to Adelaide and Orrin's 3 children, Charles Albert, William and Nancy. They are on the
census records for 1870 in Ottawa, Ks,, then with Orrin and 2nd wife, Lydia Jane Chamberlin and their children in 1880.
I am assuming Adelaide died around 1870 give or take a few years or months, and Nancy as well, as she is not on the 1880 census with Orrin

Chapin, born around 1925, had approx. 16 brothers and sisters in WI, and I can't even figure out their names. Whoever can help me is going to have a big chunk of info to add to their tree as well.

Looking for information on a man by the name of James Chapin, who was a miller in a large grist mill owned by a relative of mine, David Cooper, in Rochester, Indiana in the 1870s. Mr. Chapin is mentioned favorably in my g-g-grandfather's journal, soon to be published. I would like to know if more is known about this man, particularly relative to his trade.

CHAPIN, Joseph S, b. NY state 1807, m Nancy Filer in ON, 1833, moved to PA c 1860

I am unable to link this man to the sea of Chapins descended from Deacon Samuel (and would LOVE to!). Joseph apparently born in Hanover Green, NY (not my research), moved to Ontario, had 10 children, moved with 9 of them to PA. My husband descends from the son left behind. One of HIS children listed ancestry as "WELSH" on a census.
Anyone have this man in their database, or info on any Chapin family living up near Lake Ontario in the early 1800's? Would appreciate any info. gloria

I married my Chapin husband in July 1966. At the wedding we served a wine produced by Chapin Freres (Chapin Brothers) of France (quite the coincidence--got it at the provincial liquor store). I still have one of the empty bottles. I have no info at all on the winery, its history or whether or not it still produces wine.
Other family legend of my husband's says Hugenot ancestry. In one of the Canadian censuses in mid-1800's the family is listed as of Welsh origin.
My own research stalls on Joseph Sanderson Chapin, b 1807 in New York State.
Gloria Shatford Chapin

Yes Deacon Samuel Chapin is a early settler. It is assumed that all Chapin's are desended from him. We can trace back about 15 or 16 generations going back to England. Our most recent ancestors are John,John Q.Charles A.Joseph and then Leo. don't know about the Mayflower---Grandma used to laugh when we said that. Judy

I went to Paignten, England several years ago and was looking for St. John the Bapist Church. It was a wet and dreary day and this woman walks up to me and asks if I want the Vicar...She proceeded to take me to his mans and when he opened the door, he asked if I was a Chapin. He then took me to the church and showed me the font that was most likely used to baptize DS Chapin and a listing of all who had come through the church. I did a rubbing of the engraving on the alter. I was very impressed, felt I was back in time, and felt very connected to my gggggggggggrandfather....I come from his son Japhet's line.

Bev Chapin Comyn

Deacon Samuel Chapin is considered to be the founder of Springfield, Massachusetts, although it appears that he may have been just one of the more famous people.

Nancy was assumed to have not survived in Kansas. My computer crashed a month ago and lost most of my gleanings that were only on the computer. But had found Charles Albert in Central Washington census. After Orin died in Eola Polk co., OR lydia applied for pension from Salem and then moved to Olympia or Tacoma with daughter who had a pharmacy supply or similar sales place. One source not checked would be the News paper for Bennington or Minneapolis. Bennington paper carried news of Alice (Galoway) Chapin and her children Charles and Nellie death. Also death of Parthena Smith Chapin Gilson in January 1880. The 1900 Census of Eola, Polk Co., OR, had Orrin, Lydia and a daughter and grand daughter. The daughter was a widow of an Allen. If you do a search for Merryfield in 1910 Washington it may bring up the Merryfield boys.

Hello again, Just wondering if you have been able to find out anymore infomation on our "Aunty Pearlie". What you have already told us is amazing because none of our family has heard anything about her for years. We are curious to know if she is still alive and well and where she is. We also know that she would be about 87 years old, so here's hoping.

Thanks for your trouble. Pat
