I did a little more looking and see what you mean about the kenilworth Chaplins. I'd agree that we're either not related or related far enough back that it wouldn't be easy (or maybe even possible) to trace. I think there are at least 3 David Chaplins born about that time, if not more, in the general area. Thanks for looking.

Robert

Steve,

Okay, bear with me here- my geography of the Coventry area is not perfect, particularly as a lot of names seem to be used for the same places. I know, for instance, that I see Exhall, Longford, and Foleshill all used for the same general area outside Coventry depending on the date, and I basically understand their location and general relationship to one another. I'm hazier on the location of kenilworth and bell's green. I'm aware that there are two David Chaplins, one 1839 and one 1840- and although I may have the years mixed up for birth of both, I don't think I have the familys mixed up. "My" David Chaplin was born in Exhall/Longford 1839/1840, son of Thomas Chaplin (b 1788 Exhall/Longford) and Ann Warner (b. abt 1803, probably in Walcott, L). I do have another David Chaplin b 1839/1840 in my tree as well- David Chaplin (b Foleshill 1839/1840) son of William Chaplin (b 1805 Longford) and Mary Goode (b 1805, Longford). I presume then, that "your" David Chaplin is yet a third David Chaplin b 1839/1840? A number of my early Chaplins were associated with the Salem Baptist Church in Longford. Who were the parents of "your" David?

Regards

Robert

Hi Robert,
My family of chaplin's came from woodshires green
& rowleys green, the other family of chaplin's
came from kenilworth to bell green & longford
these are no relations to me, a lot of my family
are buried in the salem church in longford. i think
you are connected to the other chaplins, what might
be mis-leading you is that there was 2 david
chaplin's born with in a year of each other 1839 &
1840, my 4" grand dads back was born 1840 & died
1883, ive been to his grave, he moved to forton
HAMPSHIRE,his children were born down there, thats
why i couldn't find them on 1870 census,then they
re-appear in 1880 warwickshire census, is this any
good to you.

If by David Chaplin, 1877, you mean David Alfred Chaplin, b 1877, the son of David Chaplin (1839) and Mary Ann, then I have him being the grandson of William Chaplin and Mary Goode. David Alfred Chaplin is my 3rd cousin 3 times removed. David Chaplin (b 1840, Exhall) the son of Thomas Chaplin (b 1788) and Ann Warner (b 1803), is my 3rd great grandfather. Joseph Thomas (b 1850 Coventry) married Mary Ann Chaplin (b 1863 Foleshill, who was the daughter of David 1840 and Mary Ann Cattel. There are so many Chaplins in the area I want to make sure we have the right ones! Just to be clear, am I corresponding with two different Steves or the same one descended from Thomas Chaplin 1788?

Regards,

Robert Thomas

Steve,

I just now saw your reply to my post. I'm very interested in contacting you as it seems we are descended from the same family. I live in the States, but Thomas Chaplin, b. 1788 Exhall, father to David, was my 4th Great Grandfather. His son David married Mary Ann Cattel- they had 6 children. The eldest, Mary Ann, ran off with my 2nd Great Grandfather, Joseph Thomas, to New Haven, Connecticut, USA in 1879-1880. Joseph was from Coventry and at the time was an engineer on one of the ships for the Red Star Line plying between England-Antwerp-Philadelphia. They settled in New Haven and Joseph and Mary Ann had 9 children until her death in 1898 at which time Joseph gave up the sea to raise his children. I know that some members of my family traveled to the Coventry area in the 1930s and visited some of the Chaplins, Thomases, and Walkers (descended from Violet Chaplin, son of David, who married George Walker, b. 1862). Since then my family has had no contact with any English branch, but would be very interested in exhanging information. Thanks,

Robert Thomas
Atlanta, Georgia

My grandfather, Thomas Henry Chaplin (born at Gillingham, Kent in 1900) served in the Merchant Navy during WWI. Our family archive includes postcards from the Archangel area, suggesting he was involved in taking British troops to that town during the Russian civil war. His merchant navy ID card gives his ship as the "Orita". I gather this was an ex Pacific Steam Navigation Co. ship, but did it go to Russia and if so, when? Can anyone suggest possible sources of information on the merchant navy's involvement in this campaign? Thanks in advance.

She is burried at Krambach cemetry in the Mid-North Coast Area of NSW Australia. She was my great great grandmother. Would like to know more about our english heritage.
Hello again
Sorry I didn't realise you were only interested in the more recent members of the Chaplin family, living in Suffolk. The reason I responded to your post was that it is headed 'Chaplin family Bristol Somerset England'. I'm fairly sure there would be a link but just a different branch of the same family. I go back to a John Chaplin born around 1811. It's interesting too that I have Collards and Newtons that turn up in other Chaplin family trees. It certainly gets complicated doesn't it? I'm just trying to follow one line otherwise I think my head will expplode! It doesn't help that they all had so many children! Anyway, hope you have some success!

Hello!
I am researching a Chaplin family from Bristol probably a bit further back than yours but thought it was worth getting in touch anyway. I have started from a John b. approx 1811 and his wife Elizabeth (Nee Yeandle b. approx 1811, Wivelsicombe, Somerset)Most of their (many) children seem to have been born in Bristol (Bedminster)1830s to 1850s so perhaps one of them could be your grandfather's father? If you have any other details let me know and I'll see if I can tie anything up. Fingers crossed!
Happy New Year!

I am researching information on the Chaplin family who lived in Bristol c1865. My grandfather William John Chaplin b.1883 (approx.)moved to Norwich around 1922/3 and lived with my grandmother Grace (Charlotte Forster/Wheeler. They had eight surviving children, including my mother Joan b.1931. If there is anyone who may be connected to this branch of Chaplins I would be interested in hearing from you.

In the 1980's we made a visit to Highland Co, OH and tracked down some of the property that had been owned by William Chaplin and sons. Upon inquiring at a brick two-story rural home we found that descendants were still living there - if I remember rightly, descendants of Robert and Rachel (Chaplin) McLaughlin (she was a daughter of William and Sarah Chaplin)! Mrs. McLaughlin who then owned the house did share some older photos with us. I don't think any were earlier than 1880 or so. We took closeup photos of the photos - best technology at the time! Of course, my family has moved several times since then so locating them now would be a project. Oh, forgot to mention that my husband is descended through William & Sarah's son, Joseph who married Elizabeth Thompson. Until later, Laura Chaplin (familychronicler)

My husband and I began working on Chaplin genealogy many, many years ago and have pieced together many of the confusing, multiple, Chaplin families in Ohio. Life interfered and research went more on the back burner! But we did manage a trip out to Maryland a year ago. I am working on the theory that our original William Chaplin was NOT an English immigrant but was instead part of a long Chaplin lineage in Maryland and Virginia. In my online tree I've put it in what I believe are his parents, John Chapline and Rebecca Cheney. But this is still a theory and I welcome any help to prove or disprove. I'm glad to discuss further my reasoning and proofs. My full family tree was just recently posted to ancestry.com as a public tree. 25 years ago I had dreams of publishing a Chaplin Family history, but now don't know if this will come to fruition. Still, I'd like to keep updating all the William Chaplin and Sarah Woods descendants - my original goal. So glad to see other Chaplin researchers online in the past few years! I'm glad to share.

Thanks, I've got this. What I'm looking for are Benjamin Chaplin's ancestors -- the Chaplin trail seems to stop with him. There are lots of Chaplins in New England and in the South during his era, but he doesn't seem to be related to any of them. I've tried everything I can think of, but I can't find any record of his parents or ancestry. And on the other end, I'm looking for info about Walter Badger Chaplin's second and third wives and their relatives.

Thanks, Bill. That definitely seems to pinpoint Avis as the mother of LaWayne and Walter Badger. (Walter Harris Chaplin is Walter Badger's uncle.) Do you have any tips on how I can find out what happened to WBC I's daughter, Marian F. Chaplin (b. about 1901 in Georgia) and her daughter, Ruth Marian Chaplin (b. about 1928 in Florida)? They seem to have vanished into thin air after 1945. The last record I can find about them is the 1945 Florida census, where Marian is age 44 and listed as "Marian Reed," living with James L. Reed, age 32 (b. about 1913 in Florida), and Ruth is 17. But I can't find any marriage or death records on any of them.

Also, if there's no father mentioned anywhere for Ruth Marian, is it safe to assume Marian F. was unmarried when she had her?

Thanks much,
Kathleen

Thank you, Bill. I do have all that info already. But as I said in my message, I still haven't been able to keep Badger A's wives and kids straight. I can't figure out for sure who the mother of Ruth Marian Chaplin, La Wayne Chaplin and Walter Badger Chaplin are, although I suspect Marian F. Chaplin had Ruth Marian, and Avis Chaplin had La Wayne and Walter Badger. But I can't find concrete info on that. (Walter Badger was my father, and I'm trying to find out what happened to him after he and my mother divorced in 1962. I know he went on to have two more wives, but I don't know if he had any more kids, or what his life was like.)

I"m also trying to find out if there is any connection between LaWayne Chaplin, Maria LaWayne Reed, and Marian Reed. I'm hopelessly confused at this point. There are just too many Marias, Marians, Ruths, Walters and Badgers in this family!!

Thanks,
Kathleen Chaplin Summers

Seeking info about Walter Badger Chaplin of Florida

I'm looking for information about Walter Badger Chaplin (1924-1978) of Jacksonville, Fla.

His paternal grandfather (and namesake) was Walter Badger Chaplin (1857-1940), who was the son of Benjamin Adams Chaplin and Georgianna Badger. There's tons of documentation about the Badgers out there; the Chaplins, not so much. I have two main concerns:

* Benjamin Adams Chaplin's (1829-1902) ancestry. Try as I might, I can't find anything about where he came from.

* The fathers and mothers of the various grandchildren that Walter Badger Chaplin and his wife, Mary Myrtis Gannon, raised. For example, their son, Badger A. Chaplin (1899-1966), had three wives, and I haven't been able to keep them or their children straight.

Any help or suggestions would be most gratefully appreciated!
