Chaplins in Kent

I am researching the family of my great-grandfather, Philip Chaplin, who lived in Tenterden and Woodchurch in Kent in the early 1900's. He married a Jeanetta Hobden (about whom I can find nothing whatsoever!) and they had five children - Ronald (my grandfather), Stella, Agnes, Muriel and Iris. Philip's father was called John, a boiler maker in Woodchurch, who married Ester (maiden name unknown).

If anyone has any knowledge of the family, I would be very grateful for help!

I am looking for information on Susan Chaplin born 3 Jul 1806 in Rockingham Co, Virginia. She married Jacob Metzmaker (Messmaker) 20 Mar 1828 in Staunton Co, Virginia.

Her husband and her children all move to Virginia, Illinois in 1855, but she stays behind perhaps because her daughter Martha is having a child. Anyone have any information about Susan Chaplin Metzmaker or her daughter Martha who may have married a man named Syrcle.

Thank you for any help you might be able to give,
Doris

Lon Chaplin was born in New York in 1824 and died in Missouri in 1891. He was a blacksmith by trade. He served in the Civil War in the 23rd Missouri and the 43rd Missouri Volunteers.
Doug

A couple of points
Rebecca died in 1885
Rebecca's mother Elizabeth died in 1882
But,
Rebecca's father did not die until 1917.
Portion of the Tilbury Hall estate must have been willed to Rebecca after Elizabeths death.
Strange, why was it not passed to Elizabeth's hushand John Pudney. Also, John remarried after Elizabeth's death.
Also, interesting as you noted.... Rebecca had a will at the age of 28.
Also Rebecca died 23 Feb 1885
John Frederick Hollingsworth, her son was born 1885

Barry

Hi Doug,

I am starting to stray a little from the Chaplin, Collis line, but I have connections to both the Hollingsworth and Pudney lines. Frederick married a Collis when Rebecca Mary (nee Pudney) died. Do you have any further details on Rebecca ?
I do know that Rebecca is the daughter of John Pudney and Elizabeth Bentall. Elizabeth's first husband was David Taylor. I have no details about the Taylors apart from the fact he was a farmer at Tibury Hall when he died. My great grandfather was David Taylor Collis

Barry Collis
Chaplin/Chaplain Essex

Hi guys,

I'm researching Henry Chaplain/Chaplin who married Emma Jane Dale in 1894. On the 1901 census return they are definately called Chaplain, and they had a son David, and a daughter Olive (I'm Olives grandson). However, David was killed on the Somme in 1916 and his service record and memorial both give his surname as Chaplin.
The family were living in Leyton in 1901, but earlier census returns give multiple entries for Henry Chaplin and Chaplain, and I'm having some difficulty in deciphering the correct one.

Any info gratefully accepted.

Hello!

I am looking for any info on Ida May Chaplin and her family. She was born in Maine ( I would assume York Co., since that's where she was living when she was married, but that's just my guess...) in 1884. She married Frank A. Clarke in 1901 in Maine and they moved to Massachusetts (Worcester Co.) between 1903 & 1906. They had several children: Albert, Edward, Rachel, Lillian, Cora, Charles, and Walter. I have info on her husband's line, but nothing on her.

Hoping someone out there is related in some way & can help.
Please reply to my e-mail address if you have anything you think might be of some help to me. I appreciate your time & efforts!

-Andrea Clague

Elizabeth Chaplin is my g grandmother, she was first married to Wm. Krieg in the 1880s, had 4 children, he worked for the railroad in NB. and was killed, she took the children to Upper Michigan where she raised them, eventually marrying a Mr. Fulton. Her father was John Chaplin according to her death cert. I have a Marr. cert. that says she is "of" Reynolds, IL but I cannot prove this.

Frank and Lucy (Poole) Chaplin, Illinois

My Great...Aunt Lucy was from Somerset, England. Unsure if her husband was also from England. Their children were:
Virginia, Art, Clifford, Gerald, Robert, Mildred. I believe all have passed on except Clifford who may still be in a nursing home. I believe Virginia and Clifford were the only two that married. The family lived in Garden Prairie, Illinois. Lost contact before my Grandmother died in 1975, Ellen Rose McInnis, who lived in Nebraska. She was Lucy's sister. There was also another brother that came from England, Tom Poole, who settled in Belvidere, Illinois. I do not have any information on him. Would appreciate any information that may be out there. Thanks.

Col Daniel Chaplin 1820-1864 Maine

I'm trying to document a son of Daniel Chaplin and Susan Gibbe, of Bangor Maine.

In an obituary published on son Winfield Scott Chaplin 1847-1935, it is mentioned his father, Daniel, is a descendent of Rev. Jeremiah Chaplin, a Baptist minister who settled in Rowley, MAss. He (JC) was married to Marsha S. O'Brien of Newburyport, MAss and had 10 children.

I have found several trees on Winfield S. Chaplin but none lists a Jeremiah as a ancestor branch. Would anyone know who this Rev. Jeremiah Chaplin might be?

I found a bio on a Rev Jeremiah Chaplin(1776-1841) born in Rowley, the son of Asa and Mary(Bailey) Chaplin.

Would anyone know if these two are the same?? or is there another Rev. Jeremiah who Daniel might descend from or how he descends from a Rev Jeremiah Chaplin.

Tks in advance..,
Sheilah

William Chaplin from Essex?

I am just starting to research my Grandfathers ancestors. I am told my grandfather, Percy CHAPLIN, was born somewhere in Essex County in 1905. He emmigrated to Canada from England around 1913 with his parents, William Rufus CHAPLIN born December 6, 1879 and Florence CHAPLIN nee WRIGHT born September 28,1874, and 2 siblings; Violet-1907(born in Copton??) and George-1911. We think William Rufus had 6 siblings; Blanche, Claude, Charles, Herbert, Harry, and Elizabeth (married name DODDS); none of which emmigrated to Canada. William Rufus' father was William Walter CHAPLIN and he married Elizabeth CHURCH; no dates for them are known. A newspaper clipping of William Rufus death notice in March 1952 says that Elizabeth, Charles, and Herbert still live in Essex. Without placenames it is very difficult to research. I would appreciate receiving any information about where they lived. Thanks.

Chaplins from Scotland and a British Subject born in USA

Hi,

I have just found an intriguing possible link to Chaplins from Scotland and USA. I have Charlotte Chaplin living with a known relative in Ipswich in 1901 when she says she was born in the USA but is a British Citizen. Her entry in the 1881 census is as follows when she was staying with Jane Frith (66) and a widow in Surrey:

Geo. CHAPLIN Visitor M Male 68 Scotland Land Propt
Charlotte CHAPLIN Visitor M Female 49 Newport F, America

I have no idea of the relationship between her and my relative at present but will check this out when I can.

Does she ring any bells with anyone else?

Andy Wheatley

Were Alice ca 1555 (often 1551) and William ca 1556 Siblings?

There is much confusion over the parents of Alice Chaplin (who is often called born 1551, but was under 21 when her father's will was read in 1575), and William Chaplin b ca 1556. One of them (at least) was sired by William Chaplin b ca 1527 of Tarnes Farm, Long Melford, Suffolk, ENG, but if *both* were, then William 1527 had grandchildren who married each other. It goes like this: If William 1527 had Alice, (and Alice married Robert Parke b ca 1547) then his *grandson* was their child, Robert Parke b ca 1580. If William 1527 had William, Jr (and Wm Jr married Agnes Antsy b ca 1556) then his *granddaughter* was their child, Martha Chaplin b ca 1584. And the marriage of a Robert Parke and Martha Chaplin born about these two dates is well documented.

The only *relief* I can see is that some have William 1527 as marrying an Alice Thompson, while others have his wife as Ann Clopton.

The other *relief* is that some have Chaplin people from *Semer*, Suffolk, while others have them from *Tarnes Farm*, Long Melford, Suffok. (My 'geography' is weak here, but I hope these two are not the same place.)

Can anyone help???

(And thanks for reading this 'mess').

I'm looking for the ascendents for Joseph Chaplin or his wife Jemima Steward (I believe her father's name may have been John). Joseph and Jemima were married in 1795 in Baylham and any information on him or his ancestors would be of great help.

I believe Jemima Steward's father, John, was the son of Robert Steward and Jane Farthing.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with any information on Herbert Chaplin's ancestors. I am his great-granddaughter, and know this much about him: he was born c.1890 and had the following known siblings: Clara, Maud, George, Albert and William. He married Ellen Elisabeth Avis around 1910 and they lived the rest of their lives in Darmsden(?) a small village not far from Ipswich. I do not know the names of either of his parents. I have only just started my search but would be greatful for any info people might have.

Jonathan E Chaplin, Urbana, Champaign County, OH

I'm looking for information on Jonathan E. Chaplin, b. CT @1804. He was an attorney in the areas of Clark, Champaign, Hardin, and Union counties OH in the 1820-30's. He was later very prominient in the Methodist Episcopal Church in that area and Seneca County, OH. His son William R. Chaplin was born in Tiffin, Seneca, OH 26 Dec 1839, d. 20 Dec 1886, Louisburg Miami, KS. He was raised by an Aunt and Uncle, David and Eleamor Thomas in the area of Galesburg, Knox, IL or the Berwick, Warren, IL area. I don't know what happened to his parents/family in OH. They seemed to have disappeared. The only information I have on her is her name, Harriet, and that she was born in VT. William was their youngest son according to an obit from the Tiffin Weekly Tribune 6 Jan 1887. I have Williams descendants well documented in my line to him. His wife, Susan Elizabeth [Lewis] Chaplin is a Mayflower descendant of the Doty line. If anyone is familiar with Jonanthan or Harriet Chaplin thanks in advance for your help!
