Heh. I only wish I *knew* what branch of CHAPMANS. None of us have found the first clue in over 100 years now.
Earliest records found for Allan Burton CHAPMAN was his student enrollment at Western Reserve Academy, Hudson Summit Co OH from 1879-1882. Over his lifetime he variously gave his birthdate as 8 Nov 1864, '65, and '66. On 1880 Summit census he was boarding with a SPRING/WARRINER household, as students did. He is not present in any household on the Summit 1870 census. 99.9% of the time he gave his birth state as OH, both parents OH.
He appeared next married Jan 1887, Fredericksburg VA, to Rosa L SKINNER, and took her back to OH. Next he is shown in Canton Stark Co. directories 1887-1892 as "Bert" AllEn Burtram CHAPMAN as an electrical engineer. Did he attend college in VA? We have no idea, but there were at least 9 existing there 1882-1887. Then again, a 15 year old in OH well could have taken college courses at WRA - but 1880s, *Electrical Engineer*" Go figger.
So I took a peek in CT, due to the Western Reserve/Ohio connection. I have no idea whose kid he was, have recently wondered, given the era, if he were someone's War Baby, some ahem indiscretion. Someone had the $$ to pay his tuition, books, room and board. And passed on blood type AB. His later career is very lively and interesting, 3 wives and families' worth and more. ;)
