I'm researching my grandmother (Lillian Frances Chapman Bersch b. 04 Dec 1906 d. 15 Aug 1973). Her father was William Joseph Chapman b. Aug 1867 in Winchester, VA d. 12 Oct 1933, buried in Lynchburg, VA. His mother was Fannie Swansey Chapman and I believe her mother was Susan Swansey.

The 1880 Fredrick Co Census shows this:
James Chapman age 30 head of house
Fannie Chapman age 27 wife

There is another 1880 Fredrick Co Census showing this:
Susan Swansey, widow, age 50, head of house
Ashby Swansey, son, age 20
Fannie Chapman, daughter, age 28, widow
Joseph Chapman, grandson, age 11
JOhn W. Chapman, grandson, age 8
Lide Chapman, granddaughter, age 10
James Chapman, grandson, age 5
Minnie Chapman, granddaughter, age 3

It appears that during the taking of the census Fannie's husband died and she moved in with her mother.
