Chapman/Mason Ontario Canada

I am looking for information on the descendants of Thomas Morton Chapman and Ellen Mary (Mae) Mason. Their children were:

May Lillian Chapman bn 23 Oct 1889
George E. Chapman bn 6 Aug 1891/died 18 Aug 1891
Howard Chapman bn 28 Aug 1892 died 16 Feb 1917 in Montreal

I don't have any descendant info after these individuals.

I have a couple of photos that were taken at A.W. Ferguson in Prescott, Ontario in the 1860's or 1870's. They are possibly of Jane Eliza Knapman and George Woodward Mason, the parents of Ellen Mary (Mae) Mason. I'd like help in identifying them if any of their descendants can help.

In all of the research I've done I haven't found anyone working on these lines that has information on the Mason line past George Woodward Mason. I have that information several generations beyond and am happy to share it.

I know that there is someone working on the Chapman/Mason line living somewhere in the St. George, UT area. I'd really like to come in contact with that individual if at all possible.

Sincerely,

Shannon Lehr

Roy Orenzo Chapman in Pennsylvania

I am having an incredibly difficult time in even getting my husband's family tree started. His mother was very close-mouthed about her family.

The following are the facts that I have:
Roy Orenzo Chapman was a police officer. He married Jennie Prudence Rogers. The lived in Pennsylvania. Jennis Prudence Rogers died in 1952.

The had a daughter; Elizabeth Stella Chapman born 28 Aug 1924.

I do not know if they had other children or not. Any ideas?

Chapman Wedding Announcement

While searching for information on another family, I found the following news blurb from the Dec 27th 1894 edition of the Mt. Clemens Press (Mt.Clemens, Macomb County, MI):
"Married, Wednesday, Dec 26, at the home of Mrs. Savage on Union street by Rev. William Bryant, Mr. Thomas Hotchkiss of Lake Linden, Mich.,and Miss Marie Chapman of Macomb township. they left for the north via Utica immediatly after the wedding. This is the third wedding knot that Mr. Bryant has tied in the Hotchkiss family within a few months."
I'm not doing research on this family, but I wanted to pass this on. I hope it is of some use to someone.
Tina Scott

Ernest Chapman

I'm researching my granfather, Ernest L. Chapman, born somewhere in England. His parents, I don't know their names, were in the jewelry business in Syracuse, NY, around the turn of the century. He had one brother who died, then when his parents died, he came into "quite a little money", began traveling around and spent it quickly. He was living in Omaha, Nebraska when married Bertha Jane Burnett of Oklahoma in 1912. He was educated in England, traveling several times, maybe 8, across the ocean, training to be a doctor, but I don't think he finished his education. He traveled and put on sales for business going out of business. He had one son, Leonard Ernest Chapman, when he died at the age of 40 in 1917. Ernest told his wife if anything ever happened to him, to get in touch with his family in England and she would have an inheiritance coming, but would have to live in Englad to get it, so she never bothered checking it out. This is about all I know about him, except some stories I've been told but nothing to help find his ancestors. Can anyone help?

Bogus Genealogy on Ancestry.com

An Ancestry.com subscriber graciously provided me with some genealogical info about my ancestors through Isaac Chapman, who died in Orange VA about 1747. Immediately, I praised myself for never buying into that online genealogy site, finding it rife with many ridiculous errors. I compiled it, and present it here. According to Ancestry.com:
___________________________________________________________
Descendants of: Thomas CHAPMAN

1 Thomas CHAPMAN b. 3-26-1690 Charles, MD d. 11-18-1782 Culpeper VA
m. Sarah Cole b. abt. 1718
2 Nathaniel CHAPMAN b. 1712 Pamunkey, Charles, MD
2 Daughter CHAPMAN
2 Ann CHAPMAN
2 William CHAPMAN
2 ? CHAPMAN
2 Isaac CHAPMAN b. abt. 1716 Stafford VA d. 5-22-1746
m. 1739 Culpeper VA Sarah COLE b. 5-1-1718 Culpeper VA d. 1748 Orange VA
3 Isaac CHAPMAN b. abt. 1739 Orange VA
m. 8-15-1811 Rebecca STEWART b. Montgomery VA d. 1840 Lawrence KY
4 John CHAPMAN b. abt. 1750 Old Dominion VA
3 John CHAPMAN b. 1-18-1740 Orange VA d. 12-18-1813 Giles VA
m. 1761 Orange VA Sally ABBOT b. 1744 Culpeper VA d. abt. 1816 Giles VA
4 Nancy Nannie CHAPMAN b. VA
4 Annie CHAPMAN b. 1763 d. 1831
4 Isaac CHAPMAN b. 4-19-1764 d. 5-29-1836
4 George CHAPMAN b. 1766 d. 4-20-1816
4 John C. CHAPMAN b. 1771 d. 1796
4 Sarah (Sally) CHAPMAN b. 8-26-1776
4 Henley CHAPMAN b. 3-26-1779 d. 8- Apr 1864
4 Jemima CHAPMAN b. aft. 1780 d. 1837
4 Elizabeth CHAPMAN b. 3-31-1791
4 Lucretia CHAPMAN b. 1798 Montgomery VA
4 David CHAPMAN b. 1803 Montgomery VA
3 Jemima CHAPMAN b. 1745 d. 1778 m. Murdock McKENZIE
4 Polly McKENZIE b. VA
4 Daniel McKENZIE b. VA
4 Isaac McKENZIE b. 1758 Culpeper VA
4 Margaret McKENZIE b. 1768 VA
4 Elizabeth McKENZIE b. 1770 VA
4 Sally McKENZIE b. 1777 VA
4 Henley McKENZIE b. abt. 1777
4 Mary Ann McKENZIE b. abt. 1778 Giles
4 Baby McKenzie b. 1778 VA
4 Mary Ann McKENZIE b. 1778 Giles
3 Richard CHAPMAN b. 1742 Orange VA
m. 1760 Culpeper VA Margaret ABBOTT b. 1742 Giles VA
4 Abner CHAPMAN b. 1764 Orange VA
4 John CHAPMAN b. 1782
4 William CHAPMAN b. 7-27-1787
____________________________________________________________

Dissembling the information above, we first see:

1 Thomas CHAPMAN b. 3-26-1690 Charles, MD d. 11-18-1782 Culpeper VA
m. Sarah Cole b. abt. 1718
2 Nathaniel CHAPMAN b. 1712 Pamunkey, Charles, MD

which would have made Nathaniel about 6 years older than his mother, Sarah. But, a bit further down her list of progeny, we have:

2 Isaac CHAPMAN b. abt. 1716 Stafford VA d. 1747
m. 1739 Culpeper VA Sarah COLE b. 5-1-1718 Culpeper VA d. 1748 Orange VA

Sarah was very precocious, obviously, bearing one son (Nathaniel) 6 years before she herself was born, then producing another son (Isaac) 4 years later, a couple of years prenatally. But then, she apparently married her own son (Isaac). Later, I’ll note that Isaac was almost certainly NOT a son of Thomas.

Now, this Isaac had another son named Isaac:

3 Isaac CHAPMAN b. abt. 1739 Orange VA d. AL
m. 8-15-1811 Rebecca STEWART b. 1793 Montgomery VA d. 1840 Lawrence KY
4 John CHAPMAN b. abt. 1750 Old Dominion VA

who, when he was only 11 had a son John, whose mother was not to be born for another 43 years.

3 John CHAPMAN b. 1-18-1740 Orange VA d. 12-18-1813 Giles VA
m. 1761 Orange VA Sally ABBOT b. 1744 Culpeper VA d. abt. 1816 Giles VA

Pretty much accurate, except that Culpeper county didn’t exist until 1749, 3 years after wife Sally was born there. But the first child listed:

4 Nancy Nannie CHAPMAN b. VA

doesn’t appear in any other records. John (b. 1740) had a granddaughter named Nancy through his son Isaac (b. 1764), who might be misplaced here. The rest of the siblings check out, until:

4 Elizabeth CHAPMAN b. 3-31-1791
4 Lucretia CHAPMAN b. 1798 Montgomery VA
4 David CHAPMAN b. 1803 Montgomery VA

who were John’s granddaughters and grandson through son George (b. 1766). Incidently, Sally would have been 59 years old when/if she gave birth to David.

Moving onto the Chapman sister, Jemimah:

3 Jemima CHAPMAN b. 1745 Culpeper d. 1778 Giles VA
m. 1760 Culpeper VA Murdock McKENZIE b. 1745 Scotland d. 1805 Giles VA

Again, Culpeper didn’t exist in 1745, and Giles wasn’t formed until 1806. No matter, they’ll say, that’s what the county ended up being. If so, they should probably have Jemimah being born in Rappahannock county, along with brothers Isaac and John. The progeny are pretty accurate until:

4 Sally McKENZIE b. 1777 VA
4 Henley McKENZIE b. abt. 1777
4 Mary Ann McKENZIE b. abt. 1778 Giles
4 Baby McKenzie b. 1778 VA
4 Mary Ann McKENZIE b. 1778 Giles

Wow! At first glance, it’s five kids in 2 years; hopefully twins and triplets! But, looking more closely, we see Mary Ann born twice, again in a county that didn’t exist yet.

On to the last child of Isaac of Orange, Richard.

3 Richard CHAPMAN b. 1742 Orange VA
m. 1760 Culpeper VA Margaret ABBOTT b. 1742 Giles VA
4 Abner CHAPMAN b. 1764 Orange VA
4 John CHAPMAN b. 1782
4 William CHAPMAN b. 7-27-1787

Seems odd to have waited 18 years before having the second son; Margaret would have been 45 when William was born. Actually, John was born in 1760, William in 1762. But Richard, unknown to Ancestry.com, remarried: Susanna CONNELY in 1790. They had Edward (b. 1795) and Thomas.
_____________________________________________________________________

My conclusion: most of what you find in online genealogy is CRAP! While it may get you started, you should NEVER assume that it is correct. Then again, you shouldn’t assume published books are accurate, either. Years ago, I demonstrated that the 1st Isaac Chapman was almost certainly NOT a son of Thomas Chapman - that assumption was based on a terribly flawed genealogical work, George Roberts’ Genealogy of Joseph Peck (1955), lacking any evidence and acknowledging sheer speculation of a lineage of Isaac through Thomas. To this day, however, amateur genealogists pass on the mistaken assumption. Genealogy without documentation is mythology.

Am seeking any information on maternal G Grandparents Charles Chapman and his wife Isabella Purves of Southwark, London, England (dates of birth est. 1850's). We assume that Isabella died in the mid-1880's, Charles married a widow with several children, and then he died (assuming early 1890's). Grandfather George Harold Chapman (dob 1883)came to Canada in 1893 as one of the Home Children. According to his birth certificate, Charles and Isabella resided at #3 Short Street in Southwark. We also know that they had additional children, but have no names.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

It was taken by Excel Studio of Hammond.

This lovely 8x10 is black & white and in nice shape. I'd like to locate family to send it to. Aug 1867 in Winchester, VA d. 12 Oct 1933, buried in Lynchburg, VA. His mother was Fannie Swansey Chapman and I believe her mother was Susan Swansey.

The 1880 Fredrick Co Census shows this:
James Chapman age 30 head of house
Fannie Chapman age 27 wife

There is another 1880 Fredrick Co Census showing this:
Susan Swansey, widow, age 50, head of house
Ashby Swansey, son, age 20
Fannie Chapman, daughter, age 28, widow
Joseph Chapman, grandson, age 11
JOhn W. Chapman, grandson, age 8
Lide Chapman, granddaughter, age 10
James Chapman, grandson, age 5
Minnie Chapman, granddaughter, age 3

It appears that during the taking of the census Fannie's husband died and she moved in with her mother.

Looking for any info about the Swansey's or Chapman's in this area. Thanks!
Chapman in Frederick Co. Va.

Looking for information for ancestors of Daniel Chapman b. abt 1819, d. 19 Nov 1875. Daniel married Cornelia Swarts (b. abt 1824,d. 1896) on 19 Nov 1839. They lived in Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. But I believe that they may have been from Gainesboro(Pughtown) area.

The IGI has Daniel's father as Thomas William Chapman born Gainesboro. He supposedly married a Jemima Lyzon Schroyer. However the only record I have found is of Thomas Chapman marrying a Sarah Royer about 1810.

Daniel's children were:
Jemima L., Mary C., George W., John B., Fannie B., James M, Scott Lewis, Jacob M., Virginia, Franklin, and Hunter Boyd.

George and John were in the 23rd Virginia Cavalry in the Civil War. Fannie B. married Charles Warren. Mary C. married John H. Lupton. James M. moved to Baltimore and became a train conductor. Scott Lewis was a station master in Winchester, VA. Hunter Boyd lived in Woodstock VA, he owned Shenandoah Caverns in New Market, VA until 1948.

Does any of this ring a bell?

Bertha CHAPMAN, Caldwell Co, KY, 1882-?

Kentucky Marriage Index shows a Bertha CHAPMAN marrying J. S. ORANGE [John Spencer ORANGE] on 14 Jun 1900 in Caldwell Co, Ky. They had two children, Clarence (b. abt 1901) and Pearl (b. abt 1903). In 1910 John was still in Caldwell Co, with a 2nd wife, Minnie L. VANHOOSER; the two children are living with them. Did Bertha die or were she and John divorced?

On the same census page in 1910 is the household of Alfred GADBERRY, wife Belle Z [or E] and dau Etta. In 1920, Clarence and Pearl are listed with John and Minnie ORANGE; on the same page there are entries for Clarence and Pearl ORANGE in the "All GADBERRY" household, identifying them as step-grandchildren. The ages are each one yr younger than in the ORANGE household. The wife's name is obscured but the first name begins with a "B" and it looks like the initial is a "Z". Is this woman the same as the "Bertha CHAPMAN" who married John ORANGE?

Royal Jesse Chapman

Hello all Chapman researchers!

While further researching my direct ancestor Royal Jesse Chapman (1802NY-1890MN) I have tried to use some indirect methods to piece together his ancestory. I am descended through his first wife Eliza. They had a child Abigail Jane who married 1)John Confer and 2) Oscar Jay Smith. Oscar Jay Smith is like a 3gr grandfather.

I accessed the 1855 census of Livingston Co. New York, and found two of Royal Jesse Chapman's daughters. One was in Nunda, and her name was Louisa Stull, married to Peter Stull. The census shows that her birth place was in Steuben Co., New York. The other daughter was in West Sparta, and her name was Nancy Spicer, married to Asa Spicer. The census lists her birth place as Cayuga Co. New York. I did not find either Abigail Jane Confer nor Royal Jesse Chapman.

Has anyone ever located Royal Jesse Chapman on the 1855 census? Since this census lists the county in New York where he was born, it would be very valuable.

What is VERY, VERY interesting is that Nancy Chapman Spicer is living right next to the Jacob Chapman family in West Sparta. In fact, if you do a census comparison in other years, we see that the two families are always near each other. It is my belief that Jacob Chapman, (wife Nancy Hudnut), are closely related to Royal Jesse and further research into his lineage may provide important clues about Royal Jesse Chapman.

Also, while doing a cemetery search in Livingston County, I found that Jacob Chapman and his family are buried in Union Corner's Cemetery, West Sparta, Livingston Co., New York. Here, among the Chapman's, is buried Nancy, died 22 May 1823, Age 72 years. Wife of DANIEL CHAPMAN.

Now look at the coincidence: Daniel is the name of the first son that he fathered (by Phidella Youngs). Nancy is the name of a daughter by his first marriage (Eliza E.). It is also the name of Jacob's wife.

IS ALL THIS IMPORTANT IN ANY WAY?

Michael.
Mrs. Thomas Chapman almost buried alive

Appears in "The Ravia Herald" 17 October 1908, Ravia, Johnston County, Oklahoma

LIFE SAVED AT FUNERAL

Ellis, Kansas, October 21 - Timely intervention of a physician who was not satisfied with the appearance of the body yesterday prevented the burial alive of Mrs. Thomas Chapman, wife of a prominent citizen. Mrs. Chapman was supposed to have died suddenly Saturday last. The body was prepared for burial, but not embalmed. The funeral was to have taken place yesterday. Just before the casket was sealed, the physician requested permission to see the body. After confirming his suspicions the woman was removed from the coffin and placed in bed. While her heart is very weak, it is believed Mrs. Chapman will recover.
