This is interesting as my family is also from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I was able to find my father john Chapman in the 1930 census living in Philadelphia with a family named Grant, unfortunately because my parents are deceased, i am only able to act on hunches. I did have a psychic reading the other day and was told that "there was a spirit man from my family around me (possibly 2 generations removed)who was buried with a bible under his arm and was connected to Pennsylvania either born/lived/died there".

Pastor, please get in touch with me about the Universalist's cemetery. I have been to the Silverstreet (Newberry Cty) Chapman cemetery some years ago. My grandmother was Madison Elmina Chapman Smith, b 1887, daughter of Giles Chapman, b 1846. I know that he was buried at Bethel. I would appreciate seeing your video. I live in Irmo, near Columbia. Thank you in advance, Carolyn

I am the great-granddaughter of Giles Chapman, b 1846 in
Edgefield County. My Uncle Giles Irving,b 1886, married Vinneil Aubin,b 1898, a black woman from Greenwood, but moved to Phildelphia in the 1920s in order to marry her because he couldn't marry her in SC. I am looking for any link I can to communicate with family from this union. I have seen a PA census showing Giles and Aubin, but I know from some "family word" that there was a daughter. Several years ago, I went with some of the Chapman relatives to the Chapman cemetery near Silverstreet, in Newberry County and have seen several of the relatives. Would you have any information for me? Thank you, Carolyn

i am an African American, with roots in Saluda County, Edgefield, SC. My Father & great grandfater were both named John Chapman. In my search I found it interesting that my grandparents Eugene & Mary (Jones) Chapman were both in Edgefield when they seemed to be from Banberg (Colleton)County. Are both of these counties the same? What is the website?

Thomas and Mary Throop(e) Chapman of Ashford, Connecticut

Is anyone working on the descendants of Thomas and Mary? I have been working through their descendants in hopes of finding a connection for my 3rd ggrandmother, Susannah Chapman who was born in Connecticut (so says her census) 25 March 1795 (Robbins Bible) and married to Marshal Robbins 11 Apr 1816 in Groton, Cayuga (now Tompkins), New York (War of 1812 pension record for Marshall).

The only other Chapman living in Groton on the 1820 census was Samuel Chapman who I believe to be the Samuel b 28 Jun 1780 to Thomas and Priscilla (Leach) Chapman of Ashford. Samuel is reported to have married Martha Tyler (bios from Genesee Twp., Potter Co., PA). Samuel went to Independence, Allegany Co., New York ca 1824. A son of theirs, Job T. Chapman married Mary Jane Robbins, a daughter of Marshall and Susannah. I do not believe that this Samuel Chapman was the brother of my Susannah (Chapman) Robbins. The last child born for Thomas and Priscilla that I have, is Thomas Chapman b 1 Dec 1791 who married Marian/Monica Carpenter 1813. There are also Chapmans on the 1820 census in Locke, Cayuga Co., NY who I believe are tied to the Ashford Chapman's - Thomas and Timothy Chapman.

Both the Chapman family above and the Robbins family moved from Ashford to Marcellus, Onondaga, New York and then on to Cayuga Co. and my Robbins line to Independence, Allegany Co., NY and finally Potter Co., PA.

Other possibilities I have for parents of Susannah would be Joseph Chapman (s/o Thomas & Mary Throop); Christopher and Abigail (Chaffee) Chapman (s/o Thomas and Mary (Chaffee) Chapman; or Parker Chapman ( s/o Thomas & Mary (Chaffee) Chapman) who married Sally Chaffee.

When Susannah was applying for Marshall's pension, she had one Fredus Chapman who deposed that he was present at her marriage in Groton. According to census, this Fredus was born abt 1805. He later moved to Winnebago Co., Wisconsin. I have not been able to find further information for this Fredus Chapman.

Although my Susannah Chapman might not have been born in the Ashford area, I have found in my research that families and neighbors tended to migrate to the same areas.

Nancy

Can anyone tell me about the CHAPMAN who married Ethel Viola ACUFF? In the 1920 census of Tulsa, Oklahoma, his first name looks like Inman. Their children are Dewitt Chapman (10), Norman Chapman (8), and George Chapman (5). Inman, Ethel, and the 2 older boys were born in Mississippi.
Inman was born in Mississippi about 1881. Ethel was born in Warren County, Mississippi, in 1889.
Ethel died in Houston, Harris County, Texas, in 1967. She was a widow then, so Inman died sometime before that.

Chapman - Ragan Connection: One deed in Baltimore Co, MD

Jim Smith,

I am glad to see your query on this Robert Chapman/Urath Ragan. Thank you for researching on this family.

I am working and researching on early Ragan families of Anne Arundel / Baltimore County, Maryland spordically in the past until now. While checking the records in Anne Arundel Co, Maryland, Baltimore Co, Maryland and Frederick Co, Maryland for Daniel Ragan and his family. The data is coming together for this family.

I ran across one item from Baltimore County, Maryland deed records. I will copy it here for you. It is as follows:

"06 Mar 1735, Patrick Kelley, planter, of Baltimore County, Maryland to Charles Ridgley, of Baltimore County, Maryland, 5 Pounds, his claim in 1,000 pounds of tobacco, for maintaining orphan child named Henry Marsh. Signed Patrick (X) Kelley. Wit: Robert Chapman, Daniel (X) Ragon."

This deed made it clear to me that this Daniel Ragan/Ragon/Reagan, son of Timothy and Mary Lary Ragan, Sr., is the father of your Urath who was born in 1734, St. Paul's Parish, Baltimore County, Maryland..

That 1735 deed indicated Robert Chapman and Daniel Ragan as the witnesses. They must have been neighbors in St. Paul's Parish, Baltimore County, Maryland. So, your theory about Robert Chapman III married Urath Ragan is very likely to be true. I also thinks that your Robert Chapman III and Urath Ragan was married in Baltimore County, Maryland before their migration to Rutherford County, North Carolina.

In meantime, Daniel Ragan and Sarah Lewis, parents of Urath Ragan, moved to Frederick County, Maryland from Baltimore County, Maryland prior to 1755. He died about 1760 there. I found the deed in Frederick County, Maryland to prove that Sarah Lewis Ragan, his wife, was still living in 1761 and 1762.

Hope we can work together on Chapman and Ragan connection.

Will stop for now. Hope to hear from you soon.

Donald B. Reagan
801 Henrietta Drive
Knoxville, TN 37912-3627

dbrbear1949@comcast.net

I am seeking information on Harriet Chapman. She married Catlett J. Atkins or C J Atkins in 1820 in Warren Co., GA.

I have found conflicting information over her father an mother.

I believe Harriet was born about between 1803 and 1824. I need to find out if William Chapman is really her father and Elizabeth Cowan is really her mother.

I hope someone has proof of this or can give me information on who her father and mother were.

Thanks.

I'm looking for information on my great aunt Catherine "Billie" Wilkinson Chapman. She married a Chuck Chapman sometime in the late 1930's or in the 1940's in the Detroit, Michigan area. She then divorced him (don't when) and married a man named Harry Sorenson who owned a machine shop in the Detroit, Michigan area. Harry died in Southfield, Michigan unsure when and Aunt Billie eventually remarried Chuck Chapman. Billie died in June 1965 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetary in Detroit, Michigan. We're trying to piece together her life. Looking forward to hearing from someone who can help. Unable to find Billie's death in soc sec index.

Dawn Zuniga dczuniga@umich.edu

In researching my grandmothers family I have turned up a brother I wasn't aware of.

Great grandparents are: James and Hattie May Chapman, birthdates of 1864 and 1869, repectively. Among their children listed in the 1910 US Census for Beat 1, Hinds County, Mississippi is a Finly. Approximate date of birth is 1899-1900. I have another census, (can't find it at the moment) I believe is from 1920 where there is a son with just the initials DF who is of the correct age for Finly.

I only ever knew my great aunts and don't recall anyone ever mentioning this brother. Also, for some reason I can't fathom I keep thinking that his name should be David Finley ( maybe he was discussed in front of me and this is a latent memory) but can find no records under that name nor any records for Finly or DF after 1920 so he either moved or passed away or was an imaginary child. ;)

Does any of this ring a bell for anyone or does someone have time to do a records check, pretty please. Can someone steer me in a direction for any records post 1920 that I could try. I'm relatively new to genealogy research and would greatly appreciate any advice or help. Thanks, Donna
Re: Any links?

Hi Lauren. Welcome to the world of genealogy! A couple bits of advice to get you started.....

1. Write down everything you know about your family. Names, dates of birth, marriage, death. Include where the event happened, too. Also include any other significant fact you know about them, like what religion they were, where to school, military service (when, what service, where, etc). Include family stories, too. They may not turn out to be true, but often there is a grain of truth. Ask relatives for what they know. And document where you have actual proof (birth certificates, etc).

2. Include siblings of your direct relatives. Sometimes, you can't find anything out about your directs, but brothers and sisters can help your research when all else fails.

3. Use the hints and tips from genealogy websites to help direct your research. (Rootsweb does have a how to get started section). Ancestry.com is excellent. The LDS site has loads of help (www.familysearch.org).

4. Keep meticulous records about what you searched for and what you learned. It will help direct your next search and will prevent you from duplicating effort. I use Family Tree Maker software, but the LDS site (above) has free software you can download. I also keep a notebook with all searches noted, failed and successful.

5. Ensure that you have good sources for your data. And don't assume anything, it could send you down the wrong path.

6. When you post to a message board, try to include as much information as possible. So, what was your Chapman's name, when was he born, where? If you don't know exactly, give a timescale. That helps us determine if we have a match and can share info.

7. Don't put your personal email in the message. The messages are published on the web and you can easily end up getting spam.

8. Start from what you know and work backwards in time.

Long winded, but I hope it is helpful. I look forward to finding out more about your Chapmans. I have some, too.
Alix

Re: Hiram M. Chapman

My Grandfather was Hiram M. Chapman. I believe he had a brother George and several other siblings. He grew up in the Berkshires, but lived in NJ with a wife Margaret.
Tom Chapman d. April 9, 1904 Portland, OR. obituary

Date: April 10, 1904
Location: Oregon
Paper: Oregonian
Page 16

PIONEER AND VETERAN

Death of Tom Chapman, who Came to Oregon Nearly 60 years Ago.

The funeral of Thomas Chapman, who died early yesterday morning at Good Samaritan Hospital, will take place at Finley’s Chapel at 2 o’clock this (Sunday) afternoon. The deceased was a pioneer Oregonian and Indian War Veteran, having come to Oregon with his parents, Colonel W.W. and Mrs. M.F. Chapman, in 1847, and became a resident of Portland in 1850, when his father became one of the townsite proprietors with D.H. Lownsdale and Stephen Coffin. “Tom” Chapman was only 19 when he took part in the Indian war in Southern Oregon in 1855-6, for which he was granted a pension only a month ago. He was admitted to practice in the courts of the territory of Oregon May 4, 1858, and his certificate was signed at Portland by George H. Williams, Chief Justice, and R.P. Boise, Associate Justice; but he did not pursue the practice of law. He was in the different mines of Oregon and Idaho from 1852 to 1880, and took part in the Nez Perce war of 1877 as messenger for General O.O. Howard. When the Taylor-Street Methodist Church was first organized, Mr. Chapman was a member of its choir, and when the Weekly Oregonian was established in the Fall of 1850, he was one of two boys who distributed about town the copies of the first edition. Among the old-timers he had many acquaintances, all of whom will regret to learn of his death.

I am not related. I am posting for research purposes.
Eellitta

Re: Chapman - Ragan Connection: One deed in Baltimore Co, MD

Donald-thank you for your reply and positive responce on my theory about urith and robert chapman III.the deed you refered to was just one of the clues that has made me think urith was the dau.of Daniel Ragan and Sarah Lewis.I too have followed Daniel and wife Sarah into Fredrick Co.Md.with thier son(can't remember his name as this is from memory)I have not been able to locate a marriage for urith and robert at present.I don't know where they were at from 1765 to 1789 when Urith Chapman appears in Rutherford Co.N.C.I believe she had the following children 1-nicholas 2-Nathan dec.1802 Henry Co.Ky. 3-James dec.1849 Lawrence Co.Ind. 4-Joshua dec.1842/43 Jefferson Co.Ind.Robert IV dec.1815 Ruth/Burke Co.N.C.with wife Martha and a dau.who married Aaron Thomas probably in N.C. ca.1785-89 she was dec.by 1796 when Aaron marries Miss Sarah Silvey as his 2nd. wife in Rutherford Co.N.C.I just wish Robert Chapman III and Urith would have named a son Daniel. It would be a pleasure to share information with you in the future.
Hi, my name is Lauren Chapman. I'm new to this whole genelogy-search process and need some assistance in knowing where to start. My mother's maiden name was Dana Powell< but my fathers surname is Chapman. I know that my grandmothers on the chapman sides, ancestors came from scotland, her last name being Nickell. I"ve found many sites talking about the chapman name, but can't find any first names i recognize. So, I think i definitly need some assistance as to where to start this process. OS email me at lcluvs85@yahoo.com. Thanks!
