Hello again Maureen,

Sorry I've taken so long to respond. I'm searching and searching for our kinfolk. I don't give up easily. I got sidetracked awhile by a couple of other family lines and sent some files to those relatives who had requested them. But this family doesn't seem to have any connections anywhere.

Thanks for the information about the Chapter siblings. It helps a lot. I know very little. But I'm looking through census and Websites for anything that might put a light on them. That German ancestry baffles me, because the name Chapter does not appear in any of the German surnames I've studied. I'm going to check the English possibility next. I wish records would not contradict each other. I guess that's part of it though. I'd love to travel to New York one day and see what I can find. But that doesn't appear to be in the near future. I sent for a tax photo of the place where William and Mary Pauline lived when she died. It doesn't really tell me anything about them, but I was curious.

I do want to keep in touch and will let you know of my progress. Yes, I have hopes. And should you discover any interesting tidbits, please let me know.

Happy hunting,

Beverly

I have some cousins who live in New York but have never met them. I met my Aunt Edna and her youngest daughter, who once lived in New York, but now live in South Carolina. My oldest son lives there, too. Here's a little information on my branch of the Chapter family:
William H. Chapter, born Oct. 1878, Brooklyn, married Mary Pauline Johnson, born Oct. 15, 1882, Baltimore, MD. She died March 14, 1919. They had six children:
Florence, born Nov. 9, 1903
Henry, born Oct. 9, 1905
Lester, born Dec. 28, 1909
Leona Adele, born July 10, 1912 (my mom)
Edna, born Sept. 5, 1914
Mildred, born May 1917

The children were put in the Brooklyn Industrial School Asociation and Home for Destitute Children. My mother came into the care of The Children's Aid Society in 1921 and was sent west on the Orphan Train sometimes after that. Probably the winter of 1921. She was raised by foster parents in Texas. About a year after she arrived in Texas, Mildred was sent here as well, and they grew up together.

So I understand about your difficulty in tracing family when you don't live in New York. My Aunt Edna doesn't remember anything. She was taken in by two sisters, but they both died when she was still quite young. Edna's in her 80s now and doesn't remember much so she can't help.

I have a copy of Mary Pauline's death certificate which gave me some information, but I haven't found her birth certificate, nor William's nor a marriage license. The census has helped a bunch, and I spend a lot of time on the Kings Co. website asking questions. There are some very nice people who respond.

Mother never talked about her early life, and I never wondered about it until one day I read an article about the Orphan Trains in the Dallas newspaper. Everything clicked. Sorry this is so long. Will look to see what else I have.

Beverly

Beverly,
I would appreciated any information you would like to share as I no longer live in NY.
The information I can share about brothers and sisters is limited and from memory. Kate lived on Long Island, I believe Vally Stream.I visited her as a child but that was a long time ago. Henry married a woman named Marie and they lived in boarding houses in Ridgewood which is part of Brooklyn. (I'm not sure if you're in NY) They had no children to my knowledge. Mabel married George Herbold and had a son named George Jr. and a grandaughter (don't remember her name). I don't know if there were other children or grandchildren, They lived in Maryland at least since 1950. George worked at a military base as a civilian employee. Mable died in Silver Springs. Gertrude's married name was Porson and she had a son named Peter. I met Lottie but don't remember her. My grandmother. Margaret married Ernest Wagner, also a lithographer in 1918.Ernest died in 1947 of TB. Margaret died in 1973 of cancer. She had a son I believe named Everett who died as an infant of meningitis. He's supposed to be buried at Cypress Hills in the"children's" section. My mother, Irene, was born April 27, 1920. She was Married twice, first to Harold Nelson and then to David Rich. She has two children, Harold George Nelson, and myself Maureen Rich, Hope this helped a little.
Maureen

I'm attempting to put together a genealogy of our Chapter family for my sister and cousins. I've found more than I expected, thanks to you and others who have answered my unending questions.
If you have information on William's brothers and sisters, your family included, I'd like to add them to my work.
I'm excited about finding you and welcome anything you want to share.
Beverly

Good Morning Maureen,

Thanks for the information about Gertrude C. Chapter. On my mom's birth certificate it shows one child not living, so this solves that problem. Gertrude was the oldest. Florence was born in 1903, my mom in 1912. I haven't been able to locate a marriage certificate for William and Mary Pauline yet. Do you know what religion they were? My aunt and younger sister of my mother is Catholic and she thought her family was, but she was only 4 when their mother died so she wasn't sure. I thought if I had an idea of the church they attended I might find a marriage record. The county doesn't seem to have one.

The 1850 New York census lists a Tho. (Thomas) Chapter, age 50 (I think), born in New York. His wife was Sara, though, so this must not be our Tom, William's father. I think I get more confused every day.

The 1880 census shows William's parents born in Bavaria and Catherine's parents born in Baden. That's a long way from England and Alsace-Lorraine. It seems more research is needed. 1900 shows parents born Germany, William born New York.

I'm happy to have this additional information and will continue digging. Let me know what else you find. I subscribe to the Ancestry census so if you have a hint where to look, I'll check it out. There is a William Chapter in the 1850 census, wife Mary, from England. (?) They were in Indiana. No children listed.

Happy hunting,

Beverly

I don't know when the Chapters came to America. I have a death certificate for William. It says his father's name was Tom(?),I can't decide because the T is not crossed, and he was born in England. His mother, Margaret Smith was born in Germany. My mother told me that William was born in Alsace-Lorraine which would make him French because at the time Alsace-Lorraine was part of France, but the death certificate says william was a lifelong resident of New York.
I looked at the death certificate for Gertrude Catherine Chapter, one of the infants buried in Evergreen, and she was the daughter of your grandparents.
Maureen

Maureen,

I am excited to finally meet some of my mother's family. Thanks for the information on Catherine and her parents. My grandmother, Mary Pauline Johnson Chapter, William's wife, is also buried in Evergreen Cemetery. She died of TB in 1919. The six children were placed in the orphanage, and I have no idea where William went. I've been unable to locate him for sure in the 1920 census. I have a possibility. The age is right but he's going by Henry, which was his middle name I believe.

The 1880 census shows an older son, Charles, age 7 and Gertrude age 4, as well as William, age 2.

So your grandmother was my grandfather's sister.
I think Mary Pauline and William lost a couple of babies which might account for some of the infant graves.

Do you know exactly when the Chapters came to America? I was surprised to see their parents were born in Germany. The name doesn't sound German. I've found a Peter Chapter in 1820 census, but don't know if he is related.
I'll look and see what else I have and let you know. I'm so happy to hear from you.

Beverly

Catherine was born to Joseph Mauer (18222-1895) and Sophia (?) Mauer ( 1823-1909). They along with a number of family members are buried in Evergreen Cemetery 1629 Bushwick Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11207-1849.
My grandmother was Margaret who married Ernest Wagner in 1918.
I know for certain you are missing Gertrude who was born in 1877 (?). She died in 1960 at the age of 83. My grandmother spoke frequently of Pete I don't know who he was.
In the burial records are several infants I don't know who'se they are.
Anna Chapter died 6-26-1875 10 months
Joseph A. Chapter died 10-29-1886 7 months
Irene Chapter 7-18-1895 17 days
Gertrude C. Chapter 11-29-1902 2 months ( don't think she is a daughter because this was not aunt Gertie)
Let me know if I can help with any other information. and if you have any I can use, I would appreciate it.
This is great!

Yes! I think we do!
This is from the 1900 Kings County Census, ED 525.
William Chapter lived at 25 Furman Ave.
born Nov 1848, married 28 years, born NY, both parents born Germany. He was a lithographer.

Catherine - wife
born Dec 1954
13 children born, 10 living
both parents born Germany

Children:
(According to 1880 census there were two older children not living at home in this 1900 census.)
William, born Oct 1878 (my grandfather)
Margaret, born Jan 1880
Katie, born Nov 1883
Harry, born Aug 1887
Henry, born Dec 1889
Lottie, born April 1891
Sophie, born July 1895
Mamie, born Feb 1897

It is so great to finally find someone who is kin. I'd about given up. I have corresponded with a woman whose husband is a descendant of Harry. They live in New York.

I don't know much more, but am delighted to share what I have.

Beverly
