Hi
Thanks for all of your information. Do you have sources for the parentage of the various people you have listed? I cannot find any corresponding names in either family search or ancestry. It sounds like it connects but I would love to know your references/sources.

To your question of relation between Peter (1820) and Mary Ann (1824), they had the same parents, Barcelona Chard and his second wife Catherine Wescott. There were some notes that said the first wife of Barce would be too old (60) to have Peter or MaryAnn and thus, I believe Catherine is his second and much younger wife. It shows her in a couple of Canada census living with her son in law Peter Weaver.

Re: Caldwell parentage. I cannot find the connection just yet so if you can advise on any of your sources again, maybe I can try and connect some dots.

I remain thankful,

Bronwyn Mason

Thank You! You verified my suspicions. I believe John T (maybe Thomas) Caldwell (1817)and his wife Elizabeth Rose (1820)were the parents of three sons one of which was Jacob Caldwell (about 1843)who married Sara Catherine Chard (1843)
The Caldwell and Chard Families owned property next to each other and also shared a grave yard in which were buried two young children one Chard and one Caldwell. I would love to give you the wonderful story of finding their headstones which I don't have room to tell today. John T's parents were William Caldwell (1793) and wife Mahala. Elizabeth Rose's parents were Jacob Rose (1799)and Gabrella Fulton (1803). Was Cyndrila Fulton related? Jacob Rose's father was DAR Patriot Baltis Rose. Family name is Roosa in the Dutch Reform Church New York 1750 with Jacob Roosa born about1728 Kingston New York. His parents Arien Roosa 1694 Ulster NY.

Sara Chard (who married Jacob Caldwell) parents were Peter Chard (1820) and Sara Anne (1819). Peter's father was Barcelona (Barce) Chard (1764) Fairfield,Conn.USA also DAR patriot. Was Mary Ann related to this family that I believe goes back to William Chard 1631 Mass., USA?

Can you confirm my suspicions that William Caldwell's parents were John Caldwell UEL and Julianne Miller?

The Williams family is UEL with Albert John Williams who was born in Conn. USA and fought with KRRNY when he was 18 years old. Can trace this side of the family to William Williams 1712 Fairfield Conn.,Mass. USA.

All these early families seem to have very close ties....

Thank You again for your confirmation.

Sincerely,
Claudia Williams
I realize your inquiry is quite a long time ago and I do not know if you have the answers already. However, Jacob Caldwell's parents are John T and Elizabeth (i do not know her maiden name).
I know this because one of my husband's ancestors is Cyndrilla Fulton who was adopted by the Caldwells when she was around 11. She married John Barce Weaver whose parents were Peter Weaver and Mary Ann Chard.
I am not sure who Sarah is related to but again, you may have this information already.
Good luck

I am researching my ancestors George Pickford Chard and Anna Maria Hall. I now have a two birth dates for each of them!! For George I have 8 May 1825 in London and 1812 in Keynsham Somerset. For Anna Maria I have 2 May 1830 and 1818. I found the shipping record for George and Anna Maria and some of his children from 1855 on the ship Fortune. Anna is listed as being 28 and George as 44. On one site I found some death dates as 2 Aug 1866 for George (I had the 1866 part) and for Anna Maria 4 Sept 1883 (I had the 1883). Looking for their parents/siblings and also their burial sites and any other information available about this family line. Cheers!

Re: Henry Coppinger Chard

Hi

My gr.gr.gr grandfather was Henry Coppinger Chard. I think he married Mary Mellish Power, who married a Mormon after his death. Her 2nd husband donated most of her Chard estate to the Mormon Church (as family lore has it). We do still have Chard cutlery with the Chard family crest on it in use today. His son was Samuel Courtenay Chard, who married a Miss Penty. One of their daughters, Constance Mary Chard, married a Tyrell (a descendant of Sir James Tyrell who was Constable of the Tower of London in +-1440's when the 2 young princes - sons of Edward IV - were incarcerated in the tower and are believed to have been murdered. Tyrell is believed to have been implicit in the plot to murder the young princes.)

I would dearly love a copy of the letter mentioned for our records and welcome contact from any Chard descendents. I live in SA, and have just returned from the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorkes' Drift where Lt JRM Chard won a VC for extraordinary valour. If anyone has personal accounts of John Chard's state of mind in the years following the battle of Rorke's Drift, I would love to add them to my family tree.

Tx, Megan

There's an awful lot of Chards, with very similar names and I am VERY confused. My family appear to all have been born around the London area, Clerkenwell seems to be the area more tha St Pancras. Most of my family on the Chard side were jewellers of one description or another. Does that help?

Clare
x:-)

I am a new member trying to trace my family name of Chard back as far as possible to establish whether we are related to John Rouse Merriot Chard of the Zulu war. So far I have managed to go back as far as William James Chard who would have been my great great great grandfather. I know that HIS son William James Chard was born in 1857 and was married to Sarah Anne Frost, born 1858 but am struggling to go any further back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :-)
D ear velpremus, great great info! many thanks for your input! as you know i have been stuck on the w chards for ages. it looks as tho you can`t always rely on the census ages born? they do seem to vary. I have a problem with my grt grandfather Charles Rowe b 1822? in the surrey census his birth place was st albans hertfordshire, i could only find the Charles Rowe b [ bradworthy devon,]i took that Charles Rowe to be my grt grandad, iknow my charles wife , was Hannah ? Anna? Ahearne? aherne? b 1821 22 Cork Ireland . cant find any marriages for her married to Charles rowe, they had a son [my grandad Charles Rowe b 1866 surrey] that was on the census surrey 1881. so have been folowing charles b devon right thru to John Roe b 1603 m Naiome [devon] my 2nd cousin has also tried to connect the rowe family and does not think it is the right ones, but has not come up with any other solutions. is there any chance of pointing me in the right directions, please , many many thanks xx

Hi Steve
Have found your URL from 2002 for your Chard history. Unfortunately it does not seem to be current. Is all that Chard information elsewhere. I am just about to start some research into a friend of mine's family tree and he is a Chard from Devon - although I am not sure if he originates from there.

Mary Ann Chard's Sydney gangplank interview says she was from Tiverton, Devon, though her husband said she was born in Wellington, Somerset, though they are not that far apart. Her parents were Robert and Mary Chard.

I found Robert and Mary on the census living on Silver Street North, Tiverton. Robert Ag Lab age 65, Mary 45(?)
Next door was a Charlotte Bryant, and C. Bryant was one of young Mary's signators.
Then on the Tiverton census Robert age 72 Labourer born in Wellington Somerset and Mary Chard 59 born in Tiverton Devon.
I have young Mary's death in Wodonga, Victoria, Australia 4 May 1876. She and Alexander Moon had ten children, the second last being my grandfather.
I haven't found young John in Australia but there are some Chards in NSW. I will have to look.
I hope your and my family turn out to be the same family.

I am a descendant of Edward Chard and Betty Wilmington, through their son Edward (and Mary Summerhayes) and his son Robert(and Mary Burford). My gg grandfather John Chard arrived in Australia with the British Army and married my gg grandmother Jessie McKenzie in 1856. I would love to find out more about our Chard ancestors.

Just found your message about Mary Chard.
My ancestral grandparents were Robert Chard and Mary Burford of the Somerset/Devon area and they had a daughter Mary. Her brother (Robert)John came to Australia with the British Army, who went awol whilst in Victoria and he was my gggrandfather. I have no knowledge if your Mary is part of his family, but it would be very interesting to find out if they are connected. Robert and Mary were buried in Clayhidon, Devon.

My mysterious Great Grandfather

My Great Grandfather's name was Rice Chard.
He died in St. Louis, MO in 1926.
The 1880 census lists him as living in Clinton County,
Illinois as a Farm Hand. He is shown as being from Ireland, like the farm family (the Ryans) he is living with. In the 1910 census, it shows him being born in Illinois. I am quite confused.
Verbal family history is no help as most have passed on.
