This may seem unusual answering your letter from 8 years ago but I had given up finding any information about my grandfather and was surprised to find this when I started researching again. Your information coincides with what little information I do have and I would love to research this info with you. I have some additional information about my father and uncles life that might confirm your information. I would deeply appreciate hearing from you.

Les Charleville
V.alechiller@gmail.com

His father, Leon Charleville, also born in Praire de Rocher, married to Marie Elvina Aubuchon, but have no info on him other than that. Does your research have any mention of Leon?

I have a copy of this book ..... if there are certain people you are looking for I can copy the relavant pages for you. I don't think this book was ever published outside of the university/libraries, there is no ISN numbers or anything like that on it. But you might check with your local library, see if they can bring in a copy for you if you want to see the entire book.

This goes for anyone here who wants copies of the information. I will help as much as I can

I got mine from a cousin, not sure where she got it... You might check your local library. It was written by Elizabeth Shown Mills, published in 1976... It was research on her own family, which is from the Louisiana area and this is what she calls the Cane River Creole Series... It also looks like Mississippi State University was involved, but I don't know in what way, the University is mentioned on the title page of the book .... If there is a specific person or family you're looking for, I can check my copy of the book and see if they are in there and copy the info that I have for you.

I came across some information on the randolph.iigenweb.net/kaskaskia website that might interest some. It appears that in May 1779 a Capt Baptiste Charleville and 1st Lt Charles Charleville were commissioned for the District of Kaskaskia to help set up a provisional government following the defeat of the British. This info was recorded in Col John Todd's Record Book on page 13, Item 54. I do not know if the Captain and Lieutenant are father/son or brothers.

Both of my JB Charlevilles were born in Illinois and moved to Ste. Genevieve area. I do know that, Aspasie, wife of JB, Sr., died in Bloomsdale, MO in 1856. So they could have lived in that area, too. JB, Jr., is listed in the Missouri 1850 census, age 28, with wife, Emilie, age 18. I also found in 1860 Illinois census, JB Charleville, wife Emilie, and family. JB, Jr. is also listed in Jackson Co., AR, in the 1870 census, with a different name of wife, few more children. From my research, it is the same JB Charleville. My gg-grandmother is among the first group of children. So the Charlevilles you mention, are probably not the ones I need. I appreciate you offering to make copies of the pages in the book. I'll send you a note if the church has any helpful information.

This book concentrates most on the Charlevilles of New Orleans area, with some info on the IL/MO Charlevilles... is your Charleville the South or Midwest (North) branch?
This list if descendants shows Jean Baptiste Chauvin dit Charleville, born 12/12/1797 married to Marie Aurore Rachal, so not sure if it's the same one you're talking about ...They do show 12 children, one named Jean Baptiste Julien Charleville, not listed as a junior, born about 1840, died after 1864. It doesn't show any marriage for him. no record found for him after the Civil War... I'd be happy to make copies of these pages for you if you think it will help

No, I'm sorry...I have some documentation on JB Charleville marriage to Aspasie Placet, and the names of their children, one of whom is JB Charleville, born 1/30/1821, but nothing past that. I got that record at the Church of Ste Genevieve, in Ste Genevieve, MO. They may have further records that I didn't see... You might find some marriage records there if the family stayed in Ste Gen. The Church, if haven't already been in touch with them, is at 49 DuBourg Place, Ste Genevieve,MO 63670-1306. They do searches I believe for a fee. Their phone #573-883-2731 .. Their receptionist is Deann Huck and her email is: huckd@valleschools.org
I will make note of the information you are looking for in case I come across it at a later date.

Hi. My ggg-grandfather was Jean Baptiste Charleville, wife, Aspasie, also from the area of Illinois you mentioned. He was born in mid-1790's. I believe Jean Baptiste had a brother named Charles. They (Jean B. and Aspasie) had a son, Jean Baptiste, Jr., who was from the same area. I am trying to find out the last name of the woman that Jean Baptiste, Jr. married. He may have married twice....not sure. In my records, I have an Emilie and a Barbara, with no last name of either. Do you have any information that could help me. Much appreciated. Ann

My name is Jim Charleville. My father's name was Edward Charleville born in Prairie Du Rocher, Illinois in 1911. His father was Frances L Charleville born in prairie Du Rocher, Illinois in 1878. His father was Edmond Charleville born in Missouri (Bloomsdale or Ste Genevieve) about 1854. His father was Charles Charleville Jr. born in Prairie Du Rocher Illinois about 1820. His father, Charles Charleville, Sr., also born in Prairie Du Rocher about 1790. I believe his father was Jean Baptiste Charleville, but I am not sure. I recently made a trip to Ft. Chartres in Illinois and found Edward Charleville stationed their during the French/Indian war. I have more information about their spouses and siblings if interested.

One of the Charleville's married Thomas Bittick - her name was Felecite as I recall.
Nora's first husband was (Unknown) Robinson.

Nora is probably Eleanore Charleville, born about 1858, daughter of Jean Baptiste Charleville and Emily (Unknown).

Jean was born 30 Jan 1821 in the Ste Genevieve area (maybe Kaskaskia, Illinois)

Census shows 5 children for Jean:
Josephine, Dunigen, Eleanore, Amanda, and John F.

1850 Census - Jackson Twsp, Ste Genevieve, Missouri
John B (28) and Emilie (18)

1860 Census - Prairie du Rocher, Monroe, Illinois
JB (49/40/39?) and Emily (31)
with Josephine (10), Dunigan(4), and Eleanore(2)

1870 Census - Village Twsp, Jackson, Arkansas
John B (52) and Barbara (38)
with Donnegan (13), Sonora (12), Amanda (5), and John F (6/12)
(The children show with last name as Duncan. I think that was probably a nickname for Donnegan and was mistakenly assigned as a last name)

Barbara is probably a second wife. John F is probably her son, not sure about Amanda.

Jean was the son of Jean Baptiste Chauvin dit Charleville [1793-1870](son of Francois Chauvin dit Charleville and Marie Louise Longval) and Aspasie Placet [1799-1876](daughter of Michel Placet and Marie Louise Aubuchon)

Francois and Marie are in the Chauvin dit Charleville book.
There is also a book (in French) called "Cousins de Ameriques" by Patrick Binet. It covers the Chauvin dit Charleville and other families and includes Jean and Aspasie.

Nora was born in St. Genevieve, MO around 1862 and her parents were from Illinois. We are trying to find who their parents were. Not sure if Amanda was born in St. Genevieve or not. We do know that they are of French descent. Nora married my gg-grandfather, Howell Jesse Hale in Arkansas, but some records show she was married once before him. Amanda married Tom Chrisler in Grubbs, Arkansas and resided there until she passed away. Can you help us? Thanks so much. Ann
Joe did not know very much about Alphonse because he had moved from St.Louis. I do have a Family Tree Maker "Family Group Sheet" that I could send to you but I really do not have much info on Alphonse. I would like to add any info you might have and would be glad to share with you what I have.
I saw your post re: the Charleville family. My grandfather was Alphonse Charleville, brother of Sylvester. I have just recently started looking into the family history and would appreciate any help you can offer. My grandfather lived in Omaha, NE and married Frances Elizabeth Carpenter. My dad was William Grant Charleville (b.1914, d.1992). I have posted a few photos of my grandfather on Ancestry.

Thanks!
Mary Charleville Chrisman

I connect to Felicite Charleville who md Thomas Bittick. Can anyone provide documents on John/Jean Baptiste Charleville and Aspasie Placet's children? I am finding conflicting names and dates for their children.

Thomas Bittick is the son of William Bittick and Parmelia 'Pamela' Smith, William is the son of Francis Bittick and Mary Stanfield. William died and Parmelia's father, George Smith, was made guardian of Thomas.

Thomas and Felicite' dau, Cornelia Bittick md Michael Charleville c1898. Michael d 6 Sep 1916 in Jackson Twp, Ste Genevieve Co, MO (death certificate online at the MO Archives Death Index). I believe Cornelia d 8 Dec 1935 in Jefferson Co, MO. Based on the info I've found - Michael is the son of Michael Roy Charleville and Louise Carron. Michael Roy is the son of John/Jean Baptiste Charleville thus making Michael and Cornelia Bittick Charleville cousins.

Any help is greatly appreciated. You can find information about Thomas Bittick and Felicite Charleville on our website, Show Me The Bittick's - www.showmethebitticks.com

Thankx, Mary Bittick Gallano

Thanks for responding to my request for Charleville info. I was aware that Benjamin Charleville had been married twice. My husband's cousin was his son Benjamin, Jr. They were very close, and it was the children of this cousin (who has died) that gave me an old letter that had been found in some of their father's belongings that gave me a lot of information about Joseph Louis Charleville and Benjamin Charleville. Hattie was mentioned in this letter. I don't have much information on Hattie Gausman. It is possible that Ben's family may have something so I am passing on your e-mail message to his daughters Mary Ann and Cathy in the event they might have some information for you.

I would appreciate receiving a copy of the obituary of Hattie as I like to reference the recorded information on the family members. My husband remembers the name Preston but does not recall anything about him.

Can you copy the obituary and forward it to me? Or I can give you my address.

Thank you again for your note.

Sincerely,
Marge Charleville
St. Louis, MO

Hi Marge,
I just stumbled onto this old posting of yours. Were you aware that Benjamin Charleville (1874-1949) was married twice? My wife is distantly related to his first wife, Hattie Gausman Charleville 1879-1910. Hattie was the mother of Benjamin's first three children, Gladys, Evelyn and Benjamin Jr. He remarried and had another son Preston.
I have the obituary of Hattie if you would like it. If you are already aware of this, perhaps you have additional information on the Gausman family that you can share with me?
Best Regards,
Ken Horner
La Canada, CA

My great-grandparents were Peter Charleville and Josephine
Levrard, married in 1873 in Ste. Married Lizzie (Elizabeth) Martin in 1901 in Madison County,
Illinois.

I find Alexander Sharleville in the 1900 census and the 1910, but
not in the 1920 or 1930 Federal Census.

His Mother, Josephine Levrard Allen, died in April, 1928 and
her newspaper obit does not list Alexander as surviving her.

I know that Alexander was a nuller and worked on barges along
the Mississippi River.

Any information would be appreciated.

Phyllis

Louise Therese Carron who married Michael Roy Charleville
never remarried after Michael Roy died in 1861. She, Louise
died in late 1800's.

She was my g-g-grandmother. One of her sons, Peter
Charleville, was my g-grandfather. I think her Mother was Judith Maurice.

Millie first married a Teaboe, then Louis Pelate (my g-grandfather), then a Weber. I have information regarding Louis Dunois Charleville's father (Louis Faro Charleville). It appears that Louis Faro Charleville and his lady friend had an alliance that produced the son Louis Dunois Charleville (born 1804). I can give you information from this line. I am still searching for the "french creole" named Theresa Adelaide Aubuchon with whom Louis Faro fathered the child. I have not had very much success at this time.

Please let me know if I can help you, and what additional information you have on Jeannette Forchet.

Leslie:
I just saw your Ancestry.com posting from Oct 2002. Sylvester Charleville was my husband Joseph Charleville's Uncle Syl. I have done extensive research on my husband's family over the past four years. I note Sylvester Charleville being born 1878 in St. Louis, Mo. His father, Joseph Louis Charleville was born in 1834, married Elizabeth Epstein and lived on a farm early in their life in St. Louis. His residence at the time of his death was 5973 Devonshire on Oct. 6, 1902. Sylvester was a building contractor in 1938 (taken from Gould's 1938 St. Louis Directory. His residence in 1920 was 3432 Osage, St. Louis. Along with Sylvester, there was Benjamin J. (B-1874); Mary E. (B-bet 1874-1875); Alphonse G. (B-bet 1875-1877); Catherine (B-1881); Florence N. (B-bet 1882-1884); and Joseph Louis (B-Feb 10, 1885). Joseph Louis is my husband's father. Uncle Syl is buried in St. Louis at Mo. Gatewood Gardens Cemetery (formerly Old&New Pickers Cemetery, St. Louis).

My husband especially remembers his Aunt Kate, Aunt Florence, Aunt Mary and his Uncle Ben. He doesn't have very much recollection about his Uncle Syl or Uncle Alphonse and did not know of the two sons you spoke of..

Does this sound like it could be the same Sylvester Charleville? If so, there is more I can tell you about the Charleville family of St. Louis that you may not know, and I'm sure there are things you could tell my husband. I know he would like to know more about his father and his Uncles and Aunts. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Marge Charleville
St. Louis, MO.
DOes your family tree include a Mary Clotilda Charleville and her brother Peter Charleville. Their father was Michael Roy Charleville and her mother was Louise Carron. Mary died Nov 7, 1920. If so I am a descendent of that tree and would love know more.
Jane

That sounds like it could be the same family. Since I posted my messages, I have found out so much more about the "Charleville" family. I have dated it all the way back to France in the 1400's. I haven't begun to check out the Boyer connection though.

My grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Pelate, born Feb. 20, 1882 in Prairie du Rocher, Illinois. She had a twin Sister named Sylvania Emily Pelate.

My grandmother married Michael John Sharleville (name can
also be spelled Charleville). Her twin Sister married Mr. John T. LaRose. They had 3 other Sisters and 1 Brother. One of
their Sisters married a Godier. Her name was either Nell or
Stell. One married a William Louvier, and a M.C. Crouis.

I have the Charleville line traced back to St. Francois County,
Mo. Ste. Genevieve County, Mo., Quebec, Ontario, Canada,
and AnJours, France.

My grandfather's parents were Peter Charleville and Mary J.
Mary J. also went by Josephine M.

Please e-mail me as I really think I have hit a breakthrough here.

Phyllis
