Edith Charlton b.1868 Ontario, Canada

Ok I'm looking for help with Edith Charlton, her parents are James Graham Charlton and Ellen (or Ellinor) Hill. She is listed with her parents on the 1901, 1891 census. I cannot find marriage or birth/death info for her.

I also have a mystery on the 1901 census . Bob (spelled Bot on transcription) is 5 yrs old but listed as James (age 80) and Ellen's (age 65) son. This Bob might be my great grandfather, other records for Bob show his mother listed as Edith Gibson. I suspect Edith had Bob out of wedlock and later married a Gibson but Bob never took the name as James and Ellen had no boys - at least that I can find.

If anyone has info on Edith and can help clear up Bob for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Letitia J McGill and her famly were neighbors to Absolam Charlton in Marshall County, WV in 1860's. Absolam's brother, John Robert Charlton married Lettie. Marshall County records shows two marriage dates, April 10, 1864 and March 14, 1869. Don't know why. John Charlton enlisted in the 7th WV Infantry September 2, 1861 and was wounded February 6, 1864 at Morton's Ford, Verginia. A minnie ball pierced his chest and left lung before exiting his back. They had three childre, Samuel (1865-1915), William (1870-aft.1930), and Edward Harrison "Harry" (at.1880-???). They moved to Cincinnat about 1870 and John was a mate on a river boat. John was a grocer in 1879 and they lived at 158 Eatern Ave. John died October 18, 1891 and is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery. In 1891, Lettie, Samuel, and William lived at 162 Eastern Ave.

Ok looked up some records based on your note and I do believe you have the right Robert. Vera and Robert weren't married until 1927 ish so Robert went to US alone - possibly for military reasons ? The border crossing shows Robert as single and lists Edith Gibson as mother matching that on his attestation records.

As far as i know Robert and Vera - (she went by Senny) lived where they died - chatham, newbury - Dave knows. Both children were born in canada and Elaine stuck close to home while Roberta travelled - mostly due to her husband being in military.

Thanks for all your help - I added you as friend on facebook - hope you don't mind.

Hi Tina, You made your enquirery..and guess what! something has come up. I have just begun my search for the same individuals.. yes. Robert James Charlton's daughter Elaine Charlton, mar. Earl Jewhurst.. Earl lives in Glencoe, Middlesex Co.Ont.Can., and their one son David Neal Jewhurst, is mar. to my friend, and neighbour Cathy JUNE, they live a few doors down from me.. I am trying too confirm if Robert (Bob) James Charlton,s birth date was Jan 17th 1897. he IS bur., Dresden Cem., Camden Twp.,Kent Co.Ontario Canada, with Vera Asenath nee LONGMAN.. just corresponded tonight with you and the other researcher of LONGMAN,s... I saw a picture this evening, of Robert James CHARLTON, at his grandson,s when Robert was young serveing for his country.. His military rec.,that I think was his, for Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Forces, he listed his mother..as Edith nee GIBSON.. Thats the tricky part, because I am pretty sure I found him listed with his gr.parents, not his par. listed as his gr.parents child.. They were a James Graham CHARLTON and Ellen nee HILL. David says Robert J. Charlton,s mothers name was Edith..not Ellen and Ellen was too old too be his mother on the cens. but there was a daughter too Ellen named Edith.. So its kinda a mystery right now.. But I think Vera Asenath and Robert moved too the U.S. abt. 1920,Detroit MI. and were bur. back in Camden Twp. Kent Co. Ont.Can. with her family.. although there are lots of Charlton desc. here.. looking forward too corresponding..Nancy from Newbury, outside Dresden,in Middlesex Co.Ont.Can. but near too Kent Co.

Isabella Charlton, b. 1812 in Durham

Does anyone have any information on Isabella Charlton, born November 1812 in Monkwearmouth, Durham, England? Her parents, I believe, were named John Charlton and Ann (unsure of maiden name).

Isabella married Joseph Lackenby and had children: Thomas (b. 1833), Jane (b. 1835), John (b. 1837), Joseph (b. 1839), William (b. 1840), Robert (b. 1845), Elizabeth (b. 1847), Isabella (b. 1850), Mary (b. 1851), Edward (b. 1854), and another William (b. 1857). It appears that the family lived in Hylton, Durham as this is where all the children were born.

Thank you!

Justine

Thomas & Bella(?) Charlton - Chapelry of Hayden, Parish of Warden

Hi,
I'm looking for any info on Thomas Charlton born about 1791 in Bywell, Northumberland and died between 1861-71 at Whitley Bay, Northumberland. He was married to Isabel (or isabella or bella) she was born about 1789 in Warden, Northumberland and died between 1851 - 61.
I have found them and my direct ancestors in the various census' (1841 - 1901), but have no other information except their childrenns names and approximate dates of birth. Thomas was a blacksmith, which is indicated in the 1841, 1851 & 1861 census'.
I know they had 1 son, Thomas Charlton, born about 1826 in Warden, Northumberland. He married Margaret, born about 1827 in Tynemouth (listed as Monkseaton in the 1881 census). They are found in the 1861 census, and have 5 children listed:
Isabella born about 1853
Thomas born about 1855
William born about 1857
Edward born about 1859, and
Robert born about 1861

I found them again in the 1871 census (Township of Whitley, Village of Whitley) with additional children:
Richard born about 1863
Alexander born about 1866 and
Mary born about 1869.

I found them again in the 1881 & 1891 census', and it lists that William (aged 24), Edward (aged 22), Robert (aged 20), Alexander (aged 15) and Mary (aged 12) at the same address as their parents. 1901 census, only William had left home and the others still living with Thomas & Margaret.

My GGGF was William Charlton, he married Mary Ann Dalton (born 26 Oct 1849) in 1882, in Tynemouth. They had 5 children:
Wilfred born about 1882
Margaret Alice born about 1884
Arthur William born about 1887
Thomas born 14 Jul 1890 (my GGF, he moved to Australia) and
Frederick born about 1893.

Can anyone offer any information on any of the family lines mentioned above please, any info will be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Steve B

You are right. Some of the Charlton's I am looking for including my father and his family migrated to Australia. The English lines are so hard to find. They make it hard to search for people and their records. I suppose there are so many and they have been doing it so badly for so long - its hard to correct. Another thing that makes it hard - the Charltons all seem to use similar names eg John, Thomas, Ann - there's hundreds of them. Good luck with your searching!

I'm sure its your line. Sarah Jane Hogg living on the farm as a domestic servant - and the other names match. I'm looking for my lot and I find yours!!!! lol. I wrote a letter to the Evening Chronicle in Newcastle and I have had 2 contacts now. One was just general information, but this one in a genuine reply. The ladies' name is Mrs Jean Murray, 17 Orchard Close, Prudhoe, Northumberland, NE42 5LP, England. Good luck. I still havent worked out how your line ties in with mine. We were always told that our grandfather and Proctor Charlton on the west coast were cousins. I suppose they may have been using the term loosely. Oh well - I'll keep searching!

She tells me Thomas and wife Elizabeth, farmed at Pear Tree Farm.
Thomas and Ann had a family - John born 1841, Thomas 1844, Robert, George ( her great grandfather), twins Ann and Elizabeth and William.
Yes I am in OZ. I work in Adelaide (I was born and grew up there) for 3 weeks, then go home in Victoria for 10 days. My family research is still going well. I am also investigating my mother's father's family in Scotland.
I have today received my grandfather's birth certificate. His father was William Charlton, and his wife was Ann nee Charlton. Now that is going to be interesting! I'll have to look the census forms and see if there is more family around. I think my grandfather also had a brother called Jack (maybe John). My father also had an aunt called Maggie. I remember her and have photos of her. So I presume she is my grandfathers sister.
My grandfather was worn at another farm - not far from the Pear Tree Farm - about a five minute drive!
I must contact the Durham Council about who owned the farms.
Well still more to sort out. I really want to pick up my grandmother's line. There must be some still in England. I would like to go to England next year and visit these people and places. I think I will have to place a separate board for her family.
Well back to the research!

Yes - very interesting indeed. We have a Vincent Proctor Charlton in our family tree too, and he came to Adelaide, South Australia but in 1949. There was a Proctor Charlton living over on the west coast of South Australia. I often heard people talking about him when I was younger - I wonder if this is your Vincent Charlton. He was supposed to be my grandfather's cousin. If so then our grandfathers share a common grandfather.
The Vincent Proctor Charlton I know is my grandfather's brother(he was born in 1901, and married Mildred Grace Bertram in 1932). They also had another brother Jack ( maybe John. I don't think Jack migrated out here.
But we have a definite link. My uncle ( father's brother - was also born at Pear Tree Farm, Chopwell (up the road from Blackhall Mill - about a 1km I think) in 1916, the same year his parents were married. Where are you? I wonder if the Durham council have records of land ownership. When my grandfather migrated, his occupation was listed as farm steward. I suppose that means he didn't own the land, but worked it for someone else. Odd though about the Pear Tree Farm! Too much of a coincidence.
I have also found out that my great grandfather i.e. Alfred's father was William Charlton and his wife was Ann - and I'm told she was a McLeod. But I have ordered the wedding certificate, and that should tell me that.
Well I think we will be in contact again! In fact I'm certain!

My GG mother was the daughter of John Kennan Montford Charlton. Do you have any information on John's branch? How are you connnected to this family. I know a little about John. He was a newspaper publisher in Augusta Ga. Had 4 children (Felix, Cordelia, William & Mary (my ggmother). He married Cordelia Reviere. According to verbal family history, Cordelia was related to Francis Scott Key, although I have not found hard evidence of this yet - only passing reference in some documents.

Mary - my GG mother was Mary Charlton, daughter of John Kennan Montford Charlton and Cordelia Reviere. I am fairly certain that John's father was your Thomas Charlton from SC. He was said to have been a physican during the revolutionary war and died of thypoid fever at a fairly young age. If you have any information to share on this branch of the Charlton's, please contact me via my e-mail at mallan5716-email@yahoo.com.
Hi Mary Lou,

I'm new to this so forgive me if this is wrong but I can't see the link at the moment. The Harry Charlton that is in our family lived in Lancashire, England, born 1825 - not sure but think in Lancashire also. His son-in-law Thomas Hargreaves, is reputedly part Irish but more than that I don't yet know. Pearl (my Aunt) posted about this in May but seems to not be responding to messages here. I've written to her by post to see if she can shine more light on this as I have no other knowledge yet, being a total beginner. If a link seems more likely, I'll let you know. Is there any possibility that you can see here, as an old hand at this?

Thanks so much for your reply.

Bws Hannah

I believe your connection to George Charlton is incorrect.
I have traced my family tree back to Thomas Charlton b. 1823/25 and his father Patrick or John b.1799 but I am unsure from whether they came to Canada from Ireland or England some documents point to England others point to Ireland & handed down word include Ireland. And I cannot find there port of arrival either.
1851 Canada Census shows Thomas b.1823/25 with Wife Louisa or Anna Hesse (Hess)b.1830 and Thomas's father Patrick b.1799 and his Unk wife living in Amaranth Township, Wellington County, Ontario.
1857 East Flamborough land registry & Township office shows that on Jan 9 1855 Thomas purchases 100 acres farm at rear of lot#7 Concession 10 east Flamborough, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada.
While living in Freelton,East Flamborough Thomas and Louisa or Anna have a total of nine Children all born in
Ontario with exception of Rozella (female) b.1873 Michigan,U.S.A. Two sons Thomas B.1860 and John Henry b.1858 and the rest Daughters.
It is believed that Patrick or John dies in Freelton.
The family remains in Freelton till about 1872 then moves to Redford Township Michigan. In 1873 Rozella born there.
Thomas believed to have died in Mich. about 1874.
John Henry b. 1858 later marries Ella McNeil b.1863 Detroit, Michigan U.S.A. They have two sons Leo Syvester
b.1882 Detroit, Michigan and John Henry b.1884 Detroit, Michigan. Leo and John later move their families back to Canada about 1900 to Sandwich/Windsor Essex County, Ontario. John Henry is my Grandfather and most of his ancestors remain in Essex County, Ontario, Canada.
So you can see my dilema, I have to find leads to my two Patriarchs John or Patrick Charlton b.1799 and Thomas b.1823/25 and find there Counry of origin or there ports of entry to Canada or how many other Charltons they came to Canada with.
Again Looks like there may be too many Charltons with names like Thomas, John, John Henry to get good results.

I do not believe any of the Charltons you mention are my ancestors. The Ancestors I am looking for is Thomas Charlton B. abt 03 Oct 1823 B. in England or Ireland. His wife was Anna Hesse (Hess) b.about 1830 in England or Ireland. I have just recently located information on Thomas's death he died 19 Apr 1874 Orion ,Oakland County, Michigan U.S.A. he was a shoemaker. It list his father as being John Charlton residence as England. I originally found earlier documents that seemed to indicate Thomas's father was Patrick b. about 1799 in Ireland (this has not been confirmed.)It could be John or Patrick. I do not have any name for his wife. But I do beieve that Thomas arrived in Canada with his wife and his parents arriving about 1845-52.
And later immigrating to Michigan.

My great-grandfather Thomas Frederick Charlton born about 1855 in London and died in Hornchurch in 1939 was first married to a Eleanor Valentine Smith born in 1859 in Mile End and then to a Laura Louise Betts. I would like to find out who his parents were and when they were born and where. It is possible that his father was called William Charlton and his mother Mary Ann Birkett but I am not sure of this.
Can anyone let me have any information. My grandfather was Frederick Thomas Charlton born in 1882 in Mile End and died in 1861 in Cheltenham

Yes you are right about the names, although ours all seem to be Alfred,Walter,Agnes, Hannah, Ernest, John.
I did know there was another family of Charltons who came to Aust - was it Queensland or N.S.W. Mine came to N.S.W. originally then came over to Western Australia.
There is a Charlton fellow who works at the N.S.W. Genealogical Society in Sydney, he maybe worth a try. I dont know his name sorry.
Good luck
Lorraine
