Charlton's in County Durham

Now I have much more information.
My grandfather was Alfred Peter Charlton. He was born in 1894/5. His father is William Charlton, who was listed as being a farmer. He married Elizabeth Carroll in March 1916. He was working at on the Pear Tree Farm, Blackhall Mill, Durham, and that is where they lived immediately after they were married. He was 22 and she was 22 when they were married. My uncle, Albert Robson Charlton was born at the farm in August 1916. My father - Edward was born on the 22nd of June, 1918, at the Lane Head Cottage, Ebchester. The family moved to Australia in November 1924, and when they moved they were living at The Loft House Farm, Lintz Lane, Burnopfield.
Prior to her marriage Elizabeth Carroll lived at 35 Pottery Bank, Newcastle. Her father was Edward Carroll, who was a boiler maker. She had a sister Rosie. I know Rosie remained in England, and had at least one daughter ( I have a photo of her).
I am looking for any information on both families and the places they lived.

Harry Charlton

Please can anyone help me with information on Harry or Harold Charlton born 1825. I believe him to be my ggggrandad. My ggrandma Alice Charlton was married to Thomas Hargreaves and I have had no problem finding them on censuses. However, Harry shows on the 1891 census as living in Oldham with Alice and Thomas and is listed as the Head's fatherinlaw, aged 66. I have also found reference to Harry Charlton's death the following year 1892 , aged 67, in the BMD Death Index so he was legally known as Harry. I keep coming across a Henry Charlton with a daughter Alice with the same age. Is it possible that Henry and Harry are the same peron? I really would appreciate any information anyone can give me. Many thanks, Pearl.

Charlton history - Ebchester

Further investigation makes me believe my original query is factually wrong.
Alfred Peter Charlton was born in 1890/1891, I presume somewhere in the Newcastle area. He married Elizabeth ( I am unsure what her maiden name is) in 1912/13. They had two sons. My father Edward was born on 22/06/1918, at Ebchester. His brother Albert Robson Charlton was born on 28/08/1916, but I don't know where. In 1922/23 they all migrated to Australia.

My Grandfather was born Alfred Peter Charlton, maybe on 29 March, 1894, at Ebchester. In later life he just called himself Peter. In 1924 he married Elizabeth Maxwell at Hexham, Northumberland. They had 2 children - my father Edward - born 22 June 1918 at Ebchester, and Albert Robson Charlton. They migrated to Australia when the boys were still children. Some of Peter's relatives migrated too. Vincent Proctor Charlton was one I know who came too. I also know my grandmother had a sister Rosie, who remained in England. I also have a photograph of a cousin of my fathers. She could be Rosies' daughter.

Thomas CHARLTON - Middlesex / Newcastle

Trying to crack a log jam in the tree.

I have Thomas CHARLTON born in Middlesex in around 1803, later married in Newcastle in 1823 to Mary HOWARD also of Middlesex.

Trying to find any record of Thomas' parents or details of why / when they moved to Newcastle. Suspicion is a previous family link to Newcastle but no evidence. He is on the census in 1841 as a Joiner and again in 1851 then dies between 1853 - 8.

Anyone with any ideas or clues gratefully received !

Andrew Charlton

James C. Charlton, Tennessee > Alabama > Mississippi

I'm researching my sister-in-law's Charlton ancestry, and using census records I think I've found her great-great-grandfather. Posting the information here in case anyone has additional information or leads.

James C. Charlton is the person in question. I've tracked him and his family through three census years, but have no other information or anything other than circumstances and locations linking him to my sister-in-law's great-grandfather, James Joseph Charlton, supposedly born around 1855 in Limestone County, Alabama.

The census records tell an interesting story, but many pieces are missing. James C. Charlton was born circa 1806 in Tennessee. He was married to Sarah ____, born circa 1819 in Tennessee or Alabama. James C. was a house carpenter.

In the 1850 census, the family is living in Limestone County, Alabama. Children are Mary, Nancy, George, Samuel, Sarah, and Martha, all born in Alabama.

In the 1860 census, Sarah and the children (George, Samuel, Nancy, Sarah, Martha, Elizabeth, and James, all born in Alabama) are living in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. James is to be found in the Alabama Penitentiary in Wetumpka, Coosa County, serving a sentence for manslaughter.

In the 1870 census, James (spelled Charleton) is back with Sarah and the family in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Children are Mary, Elizabeth, James J. (all born Alabama), and youngsters George and Samuel (born Mississippi).

I haven't yet been able to trace any of the family beyond these census listings, other than James J. I believe he is James Joseph Charlton, my sister-in-law's great-grandfather, who married Lena Jane Hill and raised four children in Arkansas, mainly in Phillips County.

I would love to confirm my suspicions, and link this family to any other Charlton/Charleton families living in the area during these years. I have posted a "work-in-progress" family tree at http://www.nebula5.org/charlton/cfamtree.html

--Julie Zetterberg Sardo

Both brothers births were registered in Lanchester. I have my dads address at birth as 23 Beechville Blackhouse, Edmondsley Road, Durham and I am not even sure if my uncle John was born there.

Although we are here in Sheffield, I am trying to trace part of my tree which is based up in Middlesborough with a earlier link to Newcastle. I only know a few details of my grandfather. These are:

His name is George Charlton, he was born around 1926-1930 he lived at Calfort Street (this house is thought to have been in the family for some time). Around 1956 he lived with my nan (Winifred Hagan). Together they had my dad Keith. George also had a daughter who was 11/12 years old at this time. Beleive he also had a sister called "Bella".

During the 1950's George worked on the buses most likely as a driver but not 100% certain. I also think that he may have married during the 60's

Any help either directly to these people or any help in researching to enable me to find these relatives would be much appreciated.
Charltons from Sunderland, Co. Durham

I'm interested in tracing descendants of my gt gt grandparents James Charlton (1840-1917) and Isabella Brown (1840-1883), of Monkwearmouth, Sunderland. Particularly interested in tracing descendants of their son Thomas Charlton (born 1866) and his wife Elizabeth (born 1868, maiden name probably Parkinson), who had (at least) 6 daughters: Elizabeth, Mary, Susan, Ammora (?), Sarah, Norah. Also interested in any descendants of their son James (1869) and his wife Esther Ainsley (1869) who had a daughter Genevieve in 1898. Finally, also interested in descendants of their son Robinson Bland (1880-1948) through the male line, via sons Robinson Bland (1907) or Arthur (possibly called James instead).
Regards,
Peter.

I am searching for info on Jane Ann Charlton. By newspaper account of her death; she was born Feb 27, 1852 in Pettonfell, County Durham, England. She married Elijah Allen and they lived 42 years in Renovo, PA until her death Dec 16, 1910. I can only assume she came to the US before 1868 or 69. She had 16 children, but only 5 lived to become adults.Bessie lived in OH and married Thomas Windburn. Charles Richardson, froze to death on Lake Erie in 1909. Another daughter married a Charles Long; and my husband's grandfather was William Allen. The last son listed is Walter Allen.

John and Martha Charlton c1712 to c1780 Lanchester, England

I'm looking for any trace of the marriage of John and Martha Charlton (or Charleton) in the English counties of Durham, Northumberland or North Yorkshire.

Calculating from dates of death John was born about 1712 and Martha 1716. First real dated evidence I have is when they moved in Whitehall, Parish of Lanchester in 1748. There were three children with them, John (born c 1742), Mary (born c1746) and Elizabeth. John's will has them as his children but Martha may have been a second or third wife of course.

Further children followed:

Martha 1748
Cuthbert 1750 (my direct line)
William (1752) and
Jane (1758)

Anyone else have anything at all on this lot?

Patchwitch
CHARLTON, CORNELIUS H.

Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company C, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Chipo-ri, Korea, 2 June 1951. Entered service at: Bronx, N.Y. Born: 24 July 1929, East Gulf, W. Va. G.O. No.: 30, 19 March 1952. Citation: Sgt. Charlton, a member of Company C, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. His platoon was attacking heavily defended hostile positions on commanding ground when the leader was wounded and evacuated. Sgt. Charlton assumed command, rallied the men, and spearheaded the assault against the hill. Personally eliminating 2 hostile positions and killing 6 of the enemy with his rifle fire and grenades, he continued up the slope until the unit suffered heavy casualties and became pinned down. Regrouping the men he led them forward only to be again hurled back by a shower of grenades. Despite a severe chest wound, Sgt. Charlton refused medical attention and led a third daring charge which carried to the crest of the ridge. Observing that the remaining emplacement which had retarded the advance was situated on the reverse slope, he charged it alone, was again hit by a grenade but raked the position with a devastating fire which eliminated it and routed the defenders. The wounds received during his daring exploits resulted in his death but his indomitable courage, superb leadership, and gallant self-sacrifice reflect the highest credit upon himself the infantry, and the military service.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Beckley, West Virginia

Cemetery: American Legion Cemetery

Born: 1929 East Gulf, WV

Died: 1951 Killed in Action -- Awarded Posthumously.

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_af/charl...

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelius_H._Charlton

Note: This is not my ancestry. I am not related, but he carried out an archaeological excavation on a site in Norfolk that I am working on - and we have no information about him whatsoever (awaiting death certificate as I type). I believe that he might have been born in Newcastle in 1867, possibly married in 1889 and 1907.

Sorry for the vagueness but I would much appreciate any information that you Charltons (and family) might have about him.

john

Matthew Charlton - England -> Oh -> IA -> IL -> IA

Looking for the parents of Matthew Charlton. He was b. Abt 1840/1841 in England, d. Bef 1900 Census, prob. in Appoanoose Co., IA. I do not know when he came over here or if he came over here by himself or with his parents. He married Lucrelion (Lucretia Ann) Batton 25 Jun 1863 in Athens Co., OH. Lucretia was b. Abt 1844/45 in OH, d. 10 Mar 1924 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., UT. In the 1870 Census they are shown as living in Drakesville, Davis Co., IA with thier first 2 children born in OH, thier next 2 children born in IA, and their last 2 children born in IL (so from the time they married in 1863 until the 1870 Census, they lived in Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, then back to Iowa). In the 1880 Census they are in Centerville, Appanoose Co., IA. In the 1900 Census, only Lucretia is listed with 4 of her children, she is widowed. By the 1910 & 1920 Census, Lucretia is living in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Matthew Charlton and Lucretia Batton's children are:
Lee b. abt 1864/65 in OH
Thomas William b. abt 1868/69 in OH, d. 13 Oct 1929 in Salt Lake Co., UT
Nellie b. abt 1869 in IA
Marcus L b. abt 1873/74 in IA
Laura M b. abt 1875/76 in IL
Seth b. 5 Jan 1879 in IL, d. 3 Dec 1937 in Salt Lake Co., UT
According to the 1900 Census, Lucretia had a total of 8 children with 5 living at the time of the Census so there are 2 more that I do not have names for.
Any information on Lucretia Batton and Matthew Charlton would be great.

Thanks,
Tracy
Mary Eleanor Charlton Graff

CHARLTON, GRAFF, BEATTY, KEMP, DELAPLANE, NORRIS, DYER, TALBOTT, ELLIS
Frederick County, Maryland, USA

Hi,

I am trying to get more information on a Mary Graff. From what I have found so far, I have the idea that she was born 6 Oct 1792/3 in Frederick Co MD to John Charlton and Elizabeth Beatty. She probably was a sister to the John Charlton who married Susan Kemp (1825), Sophia Charlton (md 1819 to John Delaplane), Elizabeth and Jane Charlton (md 1819 and 1822 to Basil Norris), Catherine Charlton (md 1824 to William Dyer), and Louisa Charlton (md 1832 to Hahlon Talbott). Mary married George Graff 26 Jun 1811 in Frederick Co. George seems to have moved the family to the adjacent Montgomery Co, where he died in the 1820s, and Mary along with the kids moved back to Frederick town. It seems she never remarried, but moved around with her children at various times. She died 8 Aug 1863 and is buried at the Mount Olivet cemetery in Frederick Co. She may have had sons Marcus Sebastian and George Usher, as well as a daughter Mary A/C who married Crosby W. Ellis in Frederick Co on 3 Jul 1843; there may have been a couple of other children as well.

So far, for me all of the above is just a reconstruction of various facts that I have found, none of which may actually be related. I'm hoping people out there may know of things and can tell me whether my ideas are correct or not. If you know something, I hope you will respond!

Thanks in advance,
Steve

---
Steve Gillispie <gillisp@earthlink.net>

Henry Charlton Of VA. in 1633

In Virginia a somewhat kindred case was that of one Mr. Henry Charlton of Hungar's Parish in 1633. For slandering the minister, Mr. Cotton, Charlton was ordered "to make a pair of stocks and set in them several Sabbath days after divine service, and then ask Mr. Cotton's forgiveness for using
offensive words concerning him."

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information, which comes from a webpage called "WebRoots Library U.S. Miscellaneous" The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce

http://www.webroots.org/library/usamisc/cpobdae1.html

I have an original old picture from the late 1800's of a man named Will Charlton taken in Portland, Maine. His name is written on the back along with "mother's cousin". He may be a cousin of the Swim or Ellis family. I am not related, I found this and other pictures at an antique store in Lakewood, WI. Please contact me if you are interested in having this picture.
Crystle Brockman ( bulblvr@aol.com )

Charlton's from Hott, Greystead Northumberland

Hello everyone, I am new to the list and would like to hear from anyone with Charlton ancestry from particularly Hott, Greystead area. Hott was a farmstead which was part of the Parish of Greystead from about 1811, prior to this it was in the old parish of Simonburn. My Charltons were baptised in the Scots Presbyterian Church at Falstone which is now called the United Reformed Church. If you can trace your Charltons to this area then please contact me.

Also has anyone contacted the gentleman regarding DNA testing for Charltons in his Boarder Reiving DNA project? He sent his message on 10th June 2004. I am always suspicious about people advertising services for money but as my family is from this area it is more than likely that I come from the Boarder Reiving Charlton family but was interested to know if anyone has had any positive feedback from it.

Regards
Bob Charlton/Australia
There are some notes the indicate she is the daughter of James Jr and others that indicate she is the daughter of James Sr and his second wife Hannah.

Also, Elizabeth was reportedly named the "Belle of Blacksburg" at one point. Would love to find any information on this that might be out there.

Thanks!

His sentence was commuted to transportation in 1811 but we have been unable to find any record of him after this, on the convict transportation registers 1787-1871 at the records office in Kew.

Yet in 1815 we have a document relating to his English wife, which states that she was 'a married woman;her husband transported.'

Any help with tracking him down would be appreciated.

Thanking you in advance.

Karen Charlton.
