Hello, Have you been able to find the information you were looking for?
One way to verify this type of information is to check out the web-site Mes Aieux. They have almost all the marriage records in Quebec from close to the beginning of New France. They give you the marriage of the couple with the name of their parents. You may have more that one couple by the same name or there might been variations in the spelling but this is pretty helpful to get the lineage.
Hope this is helpful.
Re: Indian Trader Joseph Charpentier

My maternal gr-great-grandmother Sophia born 1832 in Iowa according to 1900 census was said to be the half sister of Marguerite Charpentier for whom we have birth record linking her to this Joseph Charpentier. Thus:

From Borromeo Catholic Church records, St. Charles County MO, Vol. II, page 401, 2nd entry., St. Charles County Translations of Parish records, Vol II.
"Marguerite Charpentier
The 8th of August, I baptized Marguerite Charpentier, daughter of Joseph and Louise Racine, born the 5th of June, 1830. Godfather - Francois + Racine. Godmother - Felicite + Moitie. J.B. Smedts."
Transcribed copy in St. Charles Genealogical Society. Family tradition recorded in letters states that she was actually born in the present State of Iowa, probably in present day Keokuk, but there were no Catholic Churches there then as Iowa was an Indian Territory, so baptism would have to take place in MO.
From Collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Vol. XII, 1892, AMERICAN FUR COMPANY EMPLOYEES-1818-19, edited by Reuben Gold Thwaites.
"When engaged: March 6, 1819. Name. Charpantier, Joseph, Time 3 yrs. Capacity, Boatman. Where engaged Montreal. Wages 600. Where employed, Lower mississippi. Remarks, With Laperche.
1816 LaPerche, Joseph, Mackinac, discharged on own account.
Names of St. Jean’s men. 1819-
Thomas Berthaume.
Amable Cadrieu.
Pierre Menard.
Joseph Charpentier.
Jean Bt. Desjardin.
Vol. X1, AMERICAN FUR COMPANY INVOICES-1821-22, pagees 370-
LIST OF TRADERS. ON THEIR OWN ACCOUNT AND RISK… Joseph La Perche, alias St. Jean, for his trade on the lower Mississippi. Michilmackinac, 30 July 1821. …
Joint Account With the American Fur Company. … Joseph La Perche and Russell Farnham, for trade of the lower Mississippi and its dependencies. Michilmackinac, July 27, 1822…
In a note on page 477: “Joseph LaPerche dit St. Jean was a Canadian who had come to the Northwest before 1801. In that year he was trading below Prairie du Chien, on the Mississippi. During the War of 1812-15 he was one of Dickson’s agents, being both lieutenant and interpreter in the Indian Department. In 1816 he was at Mackinac, and as here shown joined the American Fur Company. As late as 1821 he was still trading among the Sauk and Foxes. -ED.”."

Annals of Iowa, vol. 33, 1956, Article entitled "Rat Row in Keokuk".
This artical relies on a (then) recently discovered book of accounts kept by Robert E. Mott for the American Fur Company in Keokuk in the year 1833. I’ve been unable to locate the original book of accounts, Iowa Archives has no idea where it is, but the article names Joseph Charpentier as one of the residents of Keokuk who did regular business with Mr. Mott. Other than this there is little documentation for any of these traders to go on in that time and place.
It seems from this that Joseph Charpentier must have first worked with Lacloche for a year from 1818 and then been partnered up with Joseph LaPerche dit St. Jean. As the later was trading “on his own account and risk” precisely in the region of Keokuk, we must assume that Mr. Charpentier remained working with or without him until the region opened up to settlement in the mid 1830’s. By that time he had also established himself In St. Charles Missouri where he seems to have died.

BURIAL:
Borromeo Catholic Church records, St. Charles County MO, St. Charles County Translatins of Parish records, Vol II.

Thanks Judy. You're right about Charpentier/Carpenter. There are also other spellings which makes finding someone more difficult. The correct French spelling is Carpentier. Also, I've found many "Joseph Carpenters" are Native Indian. Seems to be a popular name. I will keep my eyes open for Alfred for you. Good luck to you too. Let me know if you find him.
I have read that Charpentier was the French version of Carpenter. The family first came to the US or Canada using Charpentier and changed it to Carpenter. I do not remember exactly where I read that, but I suggest you google "Charpentier family" or "Carpenter Family" and see what you get. And if you run into Alfred Carpenter born abt 1819 in NY, please let me know. There was a huge number of Carpenters in Herkimer Co Ny abt 1800.
Best of luck, Judy

He had been married three times (once in WA and two in BC Canada).
Help Please

My great-great-grandfather was one Alfred Duchemin Carpenter, born 1860 in Islington, London/Middlesex. I can find him on later censuses, when he is married + has his own family, but I can not find any evidence of a registration of his birth (and hence who his parents were).

I have come across an Alfred Carpenter in Islington in/around that year, but nothing with the name Duchemin, which not only shows up in the later records, but also has real significance in our family history (it is believed the family originated from France around the time of the revolution) - so it is unlikely just to have appeared/disappeared.

With the connection to France it has been suggested that the family may have Anglosized their name at some point (although it is not thought to have happened as I'm about to suggest). I wondered therefore whether Alfred may have been born a Charpentier (the French version of Carpenter). I have tried this variation aswell, but with no joy, however I may be doing something wrong.

Can anyone help me find Alfred Duchemin Carpenter + his parents please (or tell me what I'm doing wrong!)?

Regards, Emma Cooke.

Indian Trader Joseph Charpentier

I’m looking for the origin and parentage of Joseph Charpentier born in Canada probably before 1800, who came to the Mississippi River area working as an Indian trader and who left few records of his existence beyond female descendants. He may have had a brother Antoine Charpentier who signed up with him again later in 1819.
Joseph Charpentier appears as an employee of the American Fur Company from “Montreal” and at least from 1818 he was working on the upper Mississippi River.
“Names of St. Jean’s men. 1819 Thomas Berthaume.
Amable Cadrieu.
Pierre Menard.
Joseph Charpentier.
Jean Bt. Desjardin.”
Seems he didn't return, do you know of any candidates, men who took off and disappeared from Canada records about that time?

King of France Cathedral, St. Louis, Missouri, 1820 Baptisms "Fille naturelle de Joseph Charpentier
Marie Perault. E. Saulnier pretre
+ marque du parrain
X marque de la marraine
translated thus:
Natural born (that is to say, not “legitimized” by marriage) daughter of Joseph Charpentier
July 19, 1823 I undersigned had christened Marguerite daugther of Joseph Charpentier and unknown mother ( overwrite parent) born july 6, 1820. the godfather as been Joseph Odet and the godmother...

This daughter married Antoine Garcia in 1836 and then I lose track of her. Maybe among the Garcia's of Louisiana?
Then by 1830 Joseph took up with a half breed girl from St. Charles MO, and had another daughter named Margurette

The Catholic Borromeo Church records in St. Charles MO lists the following:
"Marguerite Charpentier
The 8th of August, (1830) I baptized Marguerite Charpentier, daughter of Joseph and Louise Racine, born the 5th of June 1830. Godfather - Francois + Racine. Godmother - Felicite + Moitie. JB Smedts (Priest)"

She always claimed to have been born in Lee county Iowa, no priest to baptize her there, but seems the family moved between Iowa trading posts and St. Charles MO regularly.
Looks like he died in 1841, if this is him?
1841, December 16th was buried Joseph Carpentier. J.B. Smedts

They are not listed on many other records, missed by the census, probably because they spent most of their time at remote trading posts?

I'd like to tie this individual in with point of origin and birth family. Any ideas or leads?
Thanks!
