Just to update this thread...I found an army record that shows that John Charters (1769-1840) was born in or near Shannonbridge. He was in the British Army from 1793 to 1814. He is buried at Tisaran near Shannonbridge. He served as a Private and then Corporal in the 5th and 2nd Dragoon Guards, and then in the 11th Royal Veteran's Battalion.
His son Sergeant Major Edward Charters died, aged 33, during the Sepoy Mutiny in India in 1858.
