Hi. My late Mother-in-law told me our William was born in Richfield Center 1865. He would have been close to your Walter's age so may have been a sibling or cousin. There were a lot of Chattens in the Bloom and Richfield area. I have not been able to determine the parents or siblings of our William. Do you have Walter's parents or sib names/dates? I would love to make progress on this brick wall. I can share what I have but unless we know their connection, it may not be useful to you. Do you have a tree at ancestry.com? Mine is:
Ryan/Schilling Family Tree if you want to view it. Find William Chatten in the people index. Let me know how I can help. I would appreciate your help as well. I saw Walter and Eliz in 1910, 1920, census. Carol wacryan(at sign) hotmail.com

From what I can find, Jonathan and his wife Grace traveled from England with their children, Eleanor, Isabella and Jonathan to the U.S. It seems they were in Missouri for a while where they had three other children, Bettie, Grace and Lewist(?). My biggest question is, how did they get here. I have checked every site I can find and cannot find any family traveling from England to the U.S. in 1870, which is what Eleanor Chatten stated when she came to the U.S. Any help would be fantastic.

If anyone is requesting information pertaining to the Chattins that came to America on October 1652/53 you may contact me Ronald Chattin at nittahc@cox.net or call me at 540-362-0995. I am located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Roanoke/Hollins, Virginia 24019 I can either tansmit my computer or sent, my snail mail, the material or information. Maybe you have corrections or additions to my material. Due to the materail I have and according to the past and present researchers, and with the records located in Lancaster County Virginia of our line of Chattins, the spelling of Chattin was in for form of Chatwin. It has a win, wyn or wynd on the end of the name.

Thanks in Advance,
Ronald Chattin
Chattin/Chatten Book

Just wanted to let all my Chattin cousins know that a book has just been published on the Chattin line. If interested in purchasing this book, please fill out the following form and mail to Mr. William Fetters.

Thank you, Lil

Announcing……..

ABRAHAM CHATTIN (c 1692-1761) and GRACE MILLS of WOODBURY CREEK, NEW JERSEY and THEIR DESCENDANTS

By William Brooke Fetters

10450 Lottsford Road #5017

Mitchellville, MD 20721

fetters@ccconline.net

ABRAHAM CHATTIN, a young Quaker, moved to the Woodbury Creek area of Deptford Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey in 1716. Soon afterwards, under the auspices of Newton Monthly Meeting of Friends, he married GRACE MILLS. In the late 1720’s he purchased 240 acres of land on the south side of Woodbury Creek, on which much of the present city of Woodbury, the county seat, now stands. After Grace, the mother of his eleven children, passed away, Abraham married in succession three widows. A husbandman, merchant, and then an inn-keeper, he died in 1761.

He was survived by his fourth wife and eight children. The book’s first chapter discusses Abraham, his wives and his two married daughters, the second chapter Grace’s presumed parents and siblings, the next six chapters, his six married sons and their descendants, chapters 9-11, three subsequent generations of Chattins in the author’s line, and the last chapter, three of Abraham’s grandchildren whose fathers could not be identified with reasonable certainty. The first two of six appendices provide genealogical information regarding several early Woodbury Creek families (primarily, KIMSEY, MILLER, NICKSON/NIXSON, WHITEALL, WILKINS and WOOD) and a description and brief history of the major large tracts of land along the creek. The next three appendices contain abstracts of Chattin items printed in the Pennsylvania Gazette, letters written 1912-1847 by Elizabeth Chattin and documents pertaining to the 1869 divorce of William Wood Chattin. The last appendix provides genealogical information regarding the TOMPKINS family of Chester County, Pennsylvania.

This x111+411 page 6” by 9” hardcover book is printed on acid-free paper. It includes 23 maps, numerous illustrations and signatures, an extensive “notes and references” section documenting all major findings, a bibliography and an all-name index. The price is $40.00 per book, including postage and handling.

------------------------------------------DETACH HERE---------------------------------------------

Name:______________________________________________________

Address____________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________

Enclosed is my check for $_______for ____copies of Abraham Chattin (c 1692-1761) and Grace Mills and Their Descendants.

Hello, especially Jo-Ann and Philip. I have read your messages, and may be able to help. My mother is Mildred Miller, the daughter of Minnie Chatten-Stout, the daughter of Ida Chatten, the daughter of Daniel Chatten.

Philip, I am not sure how much you know of your family, but let me give you this--the Jameson (or Jamison)was your father's grandmother's maiden name. Your father and I are second cousins, one generation different (removed).

Jo-Ann, I am not aware of a Wilbert Hart, but I do have a Samuel Hart listed in my data. Samuel married Catherine Jamison, who is Philip's great-grandmother.

This means that Jo-Ann and Philip are cousins, and most likely, Jo-Ann, I am your cousin also.

If you would like to get in touch, my e-mail is RASteach@aol.com.

James,
I get the feeling you may just be getting started on your search. But I, or anyone else, would need more information then just the names.
--What are you looking for concerning them?
--What were the approximate\exact vital dates of their lives, and marriage?
--Where did they live? Where were they born, and\or died?
--What is your relationship to them? (For example: since your last name is Saxon, are you a grandchild??? ...an in-law???)
--Starting from you, work backwards, and give me\us something with which to work?

By profession I am a full-time educator. Thus, my time is limited. The Chattens I know are related to me, but I am willing to take a reasonable look at your concern. But to list two names tells me nothing of where to look, or anything else.

Regards,
Bob Smallwood

Chatten (Chattin) Family of Pittsylvania County, VA (black)

I am looking for any descendants of John Chatten. This family in the early 1900's lived in the Shockoe Community which is located in Java, VA. John Chatten was born about 1877. He was married twice. His first wife was named Rosa, born about 1885. John's second wife was named Ida, born about 1888. So there are two sets of Chatten, sometime spell Chattin.
The following are John Chatten's known offsprings:

John & Rosa Offsprings
Charles Henry (Charlie)
Willie
Calvin
Bettie
Irene
Dora
Clara

John & Ida Offsprings
Callie
Ballard
Ilove
Arlene
Elnora
Alfonzo
Gracie
Mary Emma
Morris (Morie?)
Alley M. (Allie ?)
Jim

My name is Renita Luck. I'm the daughter of the late Sarah Ellen Chattin Luck which was the daughter of Charles Henry Chattin. So I'm the granddaughter of Charles and great-granddaughter of John. If you are decendants of any of John Chatten offsprings, please email me.
My father has traced our fork of the Chatten name back to the 1700's. But there we are stuck. Apparently there was a George Chatten who was a foot soldier in England who went to India to fight with the British East India regiment. His father's name was also George. There is a grave site in India, but all info is lacking. The Chatten's we are interested in, I believe, all come from the Norfolk/Suffolk area. If you, or anyone else, has any info, it would be greatly appreciated.

My mother's family, (eleven siblings all born at Gorleston-on-Sea) is called Chatten. And I know there are several other Chattens in the area. I was always told that they were descended from the Scottish Chattan clan, which I believed were from the West Highlands and are quite well documented and have their own tartan. I have also been told that the Scottish clan was descended from a German family and I wonder if they are related to the Chattians, I group that are mentioned in some Roman histories and in Robert Graves' "I Claudius".

The RAF Chatten referred to in Saint Nicholas' church in Yarmouth is my Uncle Clifford, now deceased. The window was commission by his youngest brother Geoffrey, a relatively well know painter, still based in Gorleston.

I know that some of my older uncles are relatively well informed about their parents and grand parents origins in Norfolk. My Grandfather was Frederick Chatten.

My grandmother was Madge Margaret born 1893, had sisters Martha Harriet (1876), Kathleen (Kitty) Mary 1894. Other siblings who lived to maturity were Dora, Audrey, Belle and Frank .I am just starting to trace my family tree and am not getting very far. Hopefully you can help.

John Chatten

John Chatten was in the Delaware Militia 1799-1800; census DE 1810. Moved to Butler Co. OH about 1815. Known children: Kennard, John R., possibly Sarah. John's wife was named Mary; Quaker records DE 1795 mention a "Mary Chattin, formerly Corbit" having to leave Quakers because of marriage to person out of faith. John Chatten lived in Butler Co. OH until 1840s when he is said to have moved to Blackford Co.IN. Possibly a daughter's home? He was my ggg-grandfather. Does anyone know of John's background or of a Corbit connection? Thank you.
