John Chatten was born Apr. 14, 1877, (as stated on his WWI Registration Card) the oldest child of Edward and Judy White Chattin. He was married three times, and twice divorced.

He married Rosa Watkins (Apr. 2, 1898); which produced seven children; Willie, Charlie, Dora, Cora, Rena, Calvin and Betty.

His marriage to Ida Martin (Dec. 14, 1919) produced the following children Callie, Jim, Elnora, Ilove, Mary, Gracie, Alfonso, Allie and Morie. Later, John married Mary Barbour (Jul. 30, 1949).

I don't have the exact date when he died but I know it was sometime in the 1950's.

Hello, thanks for the response. I am Ilove's oldest granddaughter. Hazel is my auntie. Have you been able to gather anymore information on the Chattin/Chatten family. I would love to know more?

Hi, I'm the youngest granddaughter of Charlie Chattin (1900-1987. My grandfather and Ilove were half-siblings.

I didn't personally know Ilove but my Mom Ellen Luck (1948-2005) knew her and her daughter Hazel.

Hi. My late Mother-in-law told me our William was born in Richfield Center 1865. He would have been close to your Walter's age so may have been a sibling or cousin. There were a lot of Chattens in the Bloom and Richfield area. I have not been able to determine the parents or siblings of our William. Do you have Walter's parents or sib names/dates? I would love to make progress on this brick wall. I can share what I have but unless we know their connection, it may not be useful to you. Do you have a tree at ancestry.com? Mine is:

I am related to the Chattens. My mother was a Chatten. My grandparents were Walter and Elizabeth Chatten. I think they had a son Bill. I am also looking for relatives of the Chatten family. I know all my aunts and uncles of my moms. We lived in the Bloom City area. I would like to here more about Walter Chattens family. I hope we can share information.

Jonathan and Grace (Graham) Chatten

From what I can find, Jonathan and his wife Grace traveled from England with their children, Eleanor, Isabella and Jonathan to the U.S. It seems they were in Missouri for a while where they had three other children, Bettie, Grace and Lewist(?). My biggest question is, how did they get here. I have checked every site I can find and cannot find any family traveling from England to the U.S. in 1870, which is what Eleanor Chatten stated when she came to the U.S. Any help would be fantastic.

They had 4 children: Claire James, Mae Helen, Grace LaPearl and Lola May-all b in WI.

ABRAHAM CHATTIN, a young Quaker, moved to the Woodbury Creek area of Deptford Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey in 1716. Soon afterwards, under the auspices of Newton Monthly Meeting of Friends, he married GRACE MILLS. In the late 1720’s he purchased 240 acres of land on the south side of Woodbury Creek, on which much of the present city of Woodbury, the county seat, now stands. After Grace, the mother of his eleven children, passed away, Abraham married in succession three widows. A husbandman, merchant, and then an inn-keeper, he died in 1761.

He was survived by his fourth wife and eight children. The book’s first chapter discusses Abraham, his wives and his two married daughters, the second chapter Grace’s presumed parents and siblings, the next six chapters, his six married sons and their descendants, chapters 9-11, three subsequent generations of Chattins in the author’s line, and the last chapter, three of Abraham’s grandchildren whose fathers could not be identified with reasonable certainty. The first two of six appendices provide genealogical information regarding several early Woodbury Creek families (primarily, KIMSEY, MILLER, NICKSON/NIXSON, WHITEALL, WILKINS and WOOD) and a description and brief history of the major large tracts of land along the creek. The next three appendices contain abstracts of Chattin items printed in the Pennsylvania Gazette, letters written 1912-1847 by Elizabeth Chattin and documents pertaining to the 1869 divorce of William Wood Chattin. The last appendix provides genealogical information regarding the TOMPKINS family of Chester County, Pennsylvania.

This x111+411 page 6” by 9” hardcover book is printed on acid-free paper. It includes 23 maps, numerous illustrations and signatures, an extensive “notes and references” section documenting all major findings, a bibliography and an all-name index. The price is $40.00 per book, including postage and handling.

It would seem that there maybe are more than one group of Chattens

The Battle of Culloden was in 1746 and there were Chattens already living in Dickleburgh, Norfolk around 1700 and others in Brockdish , Norfolk , ( close to Dickleburgh ) , in abt 1657.

as far as i know the name chatten is conected to clan chatten and they were involved in battle at colloden in scotland it was a small clan that was included in a collective of other small clans . hope this helps
