Yes there is probably a great deal more information out there then back when this was first posted. It is amazing what a hundred or so undirected researchers can do when they can exchange info on the web. Volunteers are rewriting history. Being undirected volunteers, they can follow lines of thinking a paid researcher might not be allowed. Some like me were armed with clues not known to the community. I was one of those who had a clue that refuted the commonly held beliefs. My clue was ignored. I was a young man at the time and the internet was only used by the government. After 30 years of research I was able to cast doubt on the prevailing theory and elevate mine to something reasonable. I was able to see firsthand how things had changed.

Well, most of what I read has Clan Chattan being started by Gilchattan Mor, the 'baillie' (abbot) or servant of St Catan. But then I jusr read the the clan went even further back to Normandy under the name Catto or Chatto and that there had been an invitation by English royalty to come to Roxborough area...or somesuch. I certainly do not claim to be an expert.

Spend a hour on the internet and you'll see what I know. :)

Forgive me taking so long to respond...this is an email account I seldom go to.

Attached is a drawing of one version. I have an actual metal crest that says 'bot a glove'. There were other variations because other clans who became affiliated with Clan Chattan, which was a conferacy of clans who supported the Jacobites, also used the crest with the cat rampant and the same saying, e.g. the Clan MacPherson and Clan MacKintosh.

Many places online to find a crest and purchase...just look around. Sometimes Clan Chattan items can be hard to find, since we're not the most prolific (or profitable) of clans to market items to. But you can easily find if you but search.

I have seen several versions of the coat of arms, 2 shown here.

Stephen, I was wondering if you have the coat of arms for the Chattan family. We spell ours Chatten but our coat of arms had a cat and the motto touch not the cat but the glove. My parents had it and when I tryed to get on it wasn't the same. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

If anyone is requesting information pertaining to the Chattins that came to America in Lancaster County,Virginia, on October 1652/53, you may contact me Ronald Chattin at nittahc@cox.net or call me at 540-362-0995 or 1-540-525-3141. I am located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Roanoke/Hollins, Virginia 24019. I can either tansmit the material by either computer file or sent it by snail mail. Most likely, you may have corrections or additions to the material. According to the past and present researchers, and with the records located in Lancaster County Virginia, our line of Chattins, have various spelling of some form of Chatwin. Chatwyn, Chattwyn, Chetwin. I made a connection of our line, in England, by the spelling of Chetwin, Lancaster County, Virginia Deed Book 1, Page 99 and the Church of the Latter-Day Saints, Order Number 989976-Film Number 510659.

Re: Chattin from the Clan Chattan of Scotland

That was a good bit to read and I did not probably read it carefully enough.

Before I digress I have something interesting.

I have run into a Cattanach. I believe Chattan was really Cattanach at one time. The sept search engine places them as a Sept of Chattan like the Macphersons, Mackintoshs and Davidsons.

I am not an expert but I believe "Cluny" may be a relatively new term for the McPherson chiefs the name was linked to Cluny Castle. In Gaelic it means meadow, which surrounded the castle. It had been the McPhersons long long ago but fell into Mackintosh hands due to the lines of clan inheritance. The Mackintoshs lost it in the same manner in that the "Cluny" had no male son of proper age to be the next Cluny. There was no clear heir the two primary families of both clans continually intermarried since before recorded history. There were persons equally qualified from both sides. Lauchlan McPherson of Nuid had married the daughter of Clan Chattan's greatest foe Sir Ewan Cameron of Lochyell or Lochyell the Great, chief of the mighty clan Cameron. These two mega clan had been decimating each other for centuries. The marriage put an end to that. Some McPhersons claim Lauchlan's wife had her daddy’s fire. Seeing the dead lock for who was to inherit the Castle and title she grabbed the deed to the castle and ran with it saying there wasn't a REAL man in the lot. She stated any man was man enough to catch her, he could have the castle. Apparently, she was correct none were able to catch her. The losers were too embarrassed to protest much. This happened after Lauchlan ascended to chief in 1722. I do not believe the MacP chiefs were called Cluny when they did not have the castle. The title went with the castle. When the castle was distroyed in 1745 the linkage stopped. All cheifs of tthe McPs are called Cluny now.

The McPherson claim to have started Chattan but maybe they did not maybe your ancesters did.
Hello. My great great grandfather was John Chattin from Iowa. He had a brother Henry that lived in Montana. Is this the tie in that you need. I have some information regarding the Chattin family. I have also been in contact with another individual working on the Chattin lines. If you are descended from a John and Hattie Nottingham that lived in Missoula in the 1910 census, then we are related. You can contact me privately if this makes sense to you. Look forward to making contact and exchange info if this fits your linage.

Lisa

Hello! Yours is an old posting, but since I just found it, it's new to me. I hope you are still actively searching your ancestry, etc., and will get this message. My name is Deirdre, and I am a very distant relative to Abraham Chattin of Gloucester, NJ. His daughter, Mary Martha Chattin, whose mother was Grace mills, married Robert Zane III. Their son, William Zane is my ancestor through the Zane family line down to John C. Zane, my g-great-grandfather. They were all in and around Camden, New Jersey up until my grandfather, William Morris, moved the family, including my mother, to California.
Anyway, if you have come accross any information about Abraham Chattin of NJ, and his ancestry, please let me know. My e-mail is pictogramc@Yahoo.com.

Thank you!!!!

Deirdre

In searching for Shelton Vice, I ran across your information that mentioned him. Do you have any bit of information concerning any children he and Mary Devine (Divine) had. I am researching a Rosetta Vice which I believe may have been their child. According to Grandma, her mom, Rosetta, lost her father (possibly Shelton/Sheldon) just before she was born, making his death 1888. And her mother died before Rosetta was 6, thus leaving her as an orphan. Any information or pointers to information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dan I have check my [FTM] Family Tree Maker and I do not have any other those Chattins or names in my files. You know it is another line of Chattins that came in through New Jersey in late 1690's. But, still they could be related with my line of descent that came to America October 1652/53. I know I still have lots of mistakes in my FTM.

Hi Ron,
Have been looking for you! I was getting back into this and saw some work you have done...but there are some errors with the info you have (e.g. children from Dad's 2nd wife assciated with 1st, childless, wife). Since you seem to be a major repository for our family info (and a NEEDED repository at that!), i would like to do what I can to help make it accurate.

Let me know what the best way is to xmit this info to you. I do NOT have gencom or any other software. My family tree IS online here (SCHATTIN) and I think you should be able to access the info there. But let me know what ou be best and convenient for you.

Hope all is well...Best Wishes,
Steve
