Hello Ed, good to hear from you again.

If you could contact me at k4yaw@hotmail.com, and put Re: Chauncey line in the subject header of the email, I have many updates since this early posting.

I have long since stopped placing my "stuff" on open message boards...too many arguments to be concerned with.

My ancestor in SE Georgia was Samuel. There is a small, /slight distance between Samuel and Jeremiah. DNA has given us a lot of great help.

Robert

Hi Robert,
I attended a Chauncey reunion this past weekend near Waycross, GA and I'm back home updating my wife's family's database. She is a Chauncey on her mother's side through William Sylveser,Sr.> Mary Marilla Chauncey> Wade Hampton,Sr.> Jeremiah,Sr.+Elsie P. Osteen. Many from this Clinch County branch still live in the area. I also noted in boards that other Chauncey/Chancey reunions occur in the general area. We had corresponded earlier [per this string] and I'm reminded that you are part of the SE Georgia Chauncey/Chancey clan. Which branch? You have a very impressive knowledge of the Chaunceys, and I enjoy following the threads.
Ed Kelley

I have a correction to make for Rachel Chancey's husband, John Reding. His father was Joseph Reding. But Joseph's first wife was Elizabeth Jennings. He married again after her death to Sarah Pendleton, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Pendleton. Sarah was John's mother, not Elizabeth.

Elizabeth Chauncy/Chancey mid-1800s Geogia -> FL

Hello everyone,

I'm currently digging for my second g-grandmother, Elizabeth Chauncy/Chancey who married my father's maternal great-grandfather, Arthur A. Pinner. I was told she was the daughter of Nancy Moody. I thought I had this nailed down but now I'm not so sure. The problem is that my Elizabeth was always called Eliabeth GORE by my father's family, so all his notes reflect that. I could find absolutely nothing on her for 10 years now.

In 2008 I got a letter from a Pinner researcher that says her name was not Gore, but Chauncy, and she was the daughter of Nancy Moody Chauncy Warner. Evidently Nancy was born a Moody, married a Chauncy (who died young) and after having Elizabeth and a few other children, married antoher man named Warner. On the death record for one of Elizabeth' children, George, his mother's name is listed as "Warner", which is the only other evidence I can find of the Warner connection for Elizabeth's mother Nancy. That led me to believe the info I recieved was correct about Nancy and Elizabeth. However, I still had no info on Nancy's husband. I only had one name, Jeremiah Moody, who was Elizabeth's uncle and Nancy's brother.

So I finally found a family that contained Nancy and Jeremiah Moody and lo and behold, that Nancy Moody was listed as having married one Christopher Chancey (this coming from LDS I was happy, but cautious and looking for confirmation elsewhere). Only there was no more info on Christopher.

Just last night I discovered some posts here that suggest that Christopher Chancey married Nancy RAULERSON. I thoguht little of it---must be a different Chancey, in the same time, in the same place in Georgia I was looking for. But then the children listed matched with what I had for Christopher Chancy and Nancy Moody!

Can anyone out there there clear this up? Do I have the same Nancy and children, only the wrong last name (again??)? This branch is one of my brick walls I've been working on for a decade now and I can almost taste the solution...it's got to be close but I'm just not seeing it.

Here's my info such as it is:
1-Christopher CHANCY (1829-3 March 1863)
+Nancy MOODY (1832-October 1915)
. . . . 2-William Riley CHANCY (1858-4 November 1868)
. . . . 2-Jeremiah CHANCY (1858-25 November 1868)
. . . . 2-Isabel CHANCY (1858-6 August 1884)
. . . . 2-Elizabeth CHANCY (1859-after 1889)
. . . . +Arthur A. PINNER (1849-)
. . . . . . . . 3-Anna PINNER (-May 1969)
. . . . . . . . 3-Erastus PINNER (27 November 1879-1955)
. . . . . . . . 3-William PINNER (31 May 1881-1920)
. . . . . . . . 3-Limuel PINNER (5 August 1885-1957)
. . . . . . . . 3-Jesse PINNER (19 November 1887-1952)
. . . . . . . . 3-George PINNER (1 November 1889-24 March 1920)

Limuel Pinner was my great-grandfather. His daughter Josephine Elizabeth married my grandfather James Albert Vaught. My grandmother was named for her mother. My question remains, what was *her* mother's name? Moody or Raulerson?

thanks for any help or suggestions!!!

Steve Vaught

Hello, I am still looking for information about Moses, David and Andrew Chauncey, children of Moses Chauncey and Mary Warren. They were born in New York btw 1805 and 1830. Moved to Michigan btw 1840 and 1850. Moses (Jr) was a physician, David a stone mason and Andrew a farmer. If you are related, know of any of their relationships, or the rest of the children, I would be very grateful to have the help. Thank you, Barb

Charles was married to Mary Cutts prior to Joanna. She died in childbirth April 23, 1758.

Samuel was the 2nd(?) son of Charles and Joanna.

Here is what is printed concerning him:

"Their fourth son, Samuel, who became a sea captain, committed suicide; and the son of this captain, who was also named Charles, died in the insane retreat of that time at Concord, N. H.".
From the notes for Mary Cutts By JUSTIN HENRY SHAW.

By Charles W. Brewster
(Editors Note: C.W. Brewster was a Portsmouth columnist in the mid-1800's. This article includes his opinions and may not reflect current research or current values.)

Brewsters Rambles about Portsmouth #57

The fourth child of Charles Chauncy was SAMUEL CHAUNCY. He was born May 12, 1767. He was from his boyhood a mariner. At an early period he commanded a ship belonging to Col. Eliphalet Ladd. Afterward he became joint proprietor with Col. Ladd's sons, Messrs. Henry and Alexander Ladd. He ever evinced much prudence and intelligence as a commander, and was successful as a supercargo. In 1795 he married Betsy, the second daughter of Col. Ladd, and occupied a house on Daniel street, near where W. M. Shackford now resides. In about 1799 their only living son, Charles William, was born. In 1807

Captain Chauncy purchased a beautiful location on the southerly side of Islington street, fronting Ann street. Here he erected a large three-story dwelling-house, and commodious out-buildings -- the present seat of the family of the late Captain Lewis Barnes.

After this time he relinquished his marine pursuits, to enjoy the pleasures of domestic ease. The life of a landsman, he soon discovered, was not congenial with the requirements of his health, morally and physically. About the year 1815, he sold his pleasant dwelling-house to Capt. L. Barnes, and removed to a valuable farm and country seat owned by Mrs. Ladd in Stratham, some ten or twelve miles from Portsmouth, in the hope of finding advantages for health in a change of situation. Here, surrounded by the comforts of life, with leisure for reading and social intercourse, and the visits of friends, in agricultural pursuits he hoped to find contentment and health. But he still looked to the ocean as his home, where "rocked on the billows of the deep," he might hope to find rest for his unsatisfied, diseased mind. Under the impression that his circumstances demanded an increase of income for future support, on the 17th of March, 1817, he took command of the Hannah in Portsmouth, and set sail for Bremen. In October, intelligence came that Capt. Chauncy had ended his life by suicide, aged fifty-one. Mrs. Chauncy, a lady of very noble qualities, died Nov. 17, 1821, at the age of forty-five years.

Eliphalet Ladd and supposingly had only 1 living son, Charles William. They lived in Portsmouth, NH in 1807. In 1815, he moved to Stratham, NH.

Is it possible that Samuel had other sons?

Does anyone have Samuel's children and/or Andrew's children?

Blini

Re: Capt. Isaac W Chauncey, b Dec 15 1810, Maine, ancestry

Blin,
Nice to hear from you. I realize that his census returns list him (and all his family) as born in Maine. The fact that Portsmouth, NH, and Kittery, ME, are neighbors separated by Portsmouth harbor--with the state boundary slicing through--leads me to give less weight to what the census taker wrote--especially since the "Kittery" Chaunceys were in place. If Capt. Isaac W. Chauncey lived at a greater remove from the state line, I would give greater credence to the federal census listing. But state listings--and age reports--are usually the least secure information (I say this from 30 years experience).
I did look up Samuel Chauncey in Fowler last night, and saw that he was a son of Isaac Chauncey and Johanna Gerrish, born in 1767. Isaac and Johanna had quite a sea-faring family. An older brother of Samuel--Capt. Isaac Chauncey--died in a ship wreck in 1792. Sisters of Samuel married sea captains. This is very rare in the New England Chauncey family--another reason why your Capt. W. Chauncey seems so logical a relation. Fowler's correspondent for Samuel Chauncey's family was a physician in Portsmouth--a colleague of Samuel's son Charles William Chauncey. This doctor reported to Fowler that Charles William, when he died in 1863 (I think), was the last male descendant of that branch of the New England Chauncey's. I've always assumed that was true, weak though it is since it relies on a secondhand report, but your Capt. Isaac W. Chauncey is at least as strong a piece of circumstantial evidence that the line continued.
The fact that your Capt. Isaac W. Chauncey doesn't appear in the 1840 federal census is a surprise--but he may be there hidden by poor indexing. I don't know. He may well have been living with his father-in-law (or future father-in-law). An analysis of the 1840 census for Capt. Ladd might indicate something.
So, I agree, Blin, that how your Capt. connects is still mysterious--but the circumstantial evidence is, I think, slightly stronger for his connection to the Kittery Chaunceys than any other option. Internal family names, location, timing, all indicate a Kittery connection.
I'll let you know if anything turns up. I've been tracing all Chauncey families (from past to present) for several decades and I have quite a collection of papers and a large database. Good luck!
Cliff

Thank you Cliff,

I have never seen "Memorials of the Chaunceys" although I've heard many mention it and I wondered if my Isaac could be in there somewhere. I also wondered if Isaac was a son of a Portsmouth Chauncey. He may have been but the 2 census forms he shows up in states he was at least born in Maine. So somebody would have had to move but crossing over to Maine was not a big deal.

And the mystery continues...
Blin

Blin,
I'm not sure but will hazard a guess that Capt. Isaac W. Chauncey was a son of Capt. Samuel Chauncey (died 1817) of Kittery Maine. Samuel's wife died a few years after he did. William Chauncey Fowler, author of "Memmorials of the Chaunceys" (1858), wrote that only Samuel's oldest son survived--Charles William Chauncey--but Fowler was so vague about the other children of Samuel that I think a more detailed investigation is warrented. If I remember, Samuel was a son or grandson of Charles Chauncy of Kittery [I'm away from home without references--relying on memory]. The Chauncey's of Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME have several sons for whom Fowler gave no information. The early deaths of both parents--and the fact that Charles William became insane about 1828--are enough to cause a break in family structure.
I noticed that one of Capt. Isaac Chauncey's sons was named "Charles W" and it could be that Isaac was paying tribute to his ill brother.
If Capt. Samuel Chauncey is not the father of Capt. Isaac W. Chauncey, then I would look for one of his brothers (Robert...).
Cliff

I'm trying to find the ancestry of Capt. Isaac W. CHAUNCEY born December 15, 1810, and died Nov. 18, 1871 at age 61. His remains are in the 1st Baptist Church cemetary according to The Kittery Maine Record Book, pg 9.

He married Augusta PHILLIPS born July 7, 1815 and died Mar 23, 1855.
Henry is my link to Isaac. Henry is the son of Isaac W CHAUNCEY and I believe, his first wife Augusta H PHILLIPS. Isaac marries a 2nd wife, Olive, later.

1850 Census of York, Maine
Isaac Chauncey 39 Head
Augusta 35 Wife
Charles W 15
Sophronia 13
Mary 11
Julia 9
HENRY 4
Lucy 2

Another book lists an Isaac H born in 1844. Maybe an infant who died.

Here HENRY CHAUNCEY is born about 1846.
In the 1860 Census of York, Maine, Henry's birth year is calculated to 1844.

1860 Census of York, Maine
Isaac W. Chauncey 50 Head
Olive 48 Wife
Mary H 21
Julia 18
HENRY 16 (I think we have the same guy.)
Laroy F. 11
Then some GUNNERSONS are listed in the same family. Perhaps Olive married a GUNNERSON.

I can't find an Isaac Chauncey for the right birth year in an earlier census, so far.

Anybody have Capt. Isaac?
Blin

I found in the 1871 marriage records of Portsmouth, NH that Sarah A PATCH and Henry J. CHAUNCEY were married in Portsmouth, NH on February 6, 1871!

So now we have the link. But I still don't know why the grave has Sarah as a Patch and not a CHAUNCY. Oh well, doesn't matter now.

So Henry J. CHAUNCEY is found in the 1850 and 1860 Census of York, Maine. He is the son of Isaac W CHAUNCEY and I believe, his first wife Augusta H PHILLIPS. Isaac marries a 2nd wife, Olive, later.

1850 Census of York, Maine
Isaac Chauncey 39 Head
Augusta 35 Wife
Charles W 15
Sophronia 13
Mary 11
Julia 9
HENRY 4
Lucy 2

Another book lists an Isaac H born in 1844.
I found some additional information in York County, Maine Cemetery Inscriptions, Vol 3 page 2353

In the South Side Road Cemetery rest the remains of:

PATCH, George W 3-Sep-1809-5 Dec 1896
Elizabeth wife of George Patch 24 Sep 1816 -
30 July 1902
Patch, Charles H 1839-1928
Lucy A, wife of Charles 1837-1922
Sarah A, dau of George and Elizabeth PATCH
died 24 Oct 1874

1874 is also the year of the birth of Sarah W CHAUNCEY who is listed as living with her PATCH grandparents in 1880.
Could Sarah A not only be the mother of Sarah and Mable Chauncey, but also have died from complications of childbirth?

The mystery is that if Sarah is the mother of the Chauncey girls, (I have found no other female PATCH, from George W's family) why was she buried as a PATCH and not a CHAUNCEY?

Was she not married when she gave birth to the daughters?
If she were divorced, would she have kept her maiden name?
If she were married, wouldn't her grave say she was a CHAUNCEY?

There a lot of speculation but no proof yet on the Chauncey link.

Blin
I'm interested in Mabel A CHAUNCEY's ancestry, also.
She would be my ggrandmother.

You may already know this but others may not.

She is listed in the 1880 Census of York, Maine as living with her grandparents.

PATCH, George W, age 71, Laborer
Elizabeth, age 63, wife
Charles M, age 40, Laborer
CHAUNCEY, Mabel A, age 7, granddaughter
Sarah M, age 6, granddaughter

Next in the census: (neighbors?)

PATCH, Joseph A, age 32, laborer
(George's son see 1860 Census)
Martha, age 31 keeping house
William?, age 10 son
Mabel G. age 8 daughter

Who and Where were Mabel and Sarah's parents? Interesting that we have 2 Mabel's next to each other. Maybe named after a common ancestor?

LDS has a marriage date of George W Patch and Elizebeth CALL as June 18, 1833.

In the 1860 census of York, ME

George W PATCH, age 50
Elizabeth, age 43
Charles H. age 20
Daniel age 19
Joseph age 12
Sarah A. age 9

Do you suppose Sarah A. PATCH became the mother of Mabel and Sarah above? I can't find her married to a Chauncey yet.

I found a Sarah PATCH in the 1870 Census for South Berwick, Maine where she is 19. (age is right). She was working in a cotton mill. I can't tell if she was living with someone, or in a boarding house or if she is listed alone.

Blin
Mary A. CHAUNCEY married Unknown THOMAS

Mary was born in Ohio in 1854. I cannot find her family in 1860, but in the 1870 census she is still single, with her family in St. Joseph, Missouri. I cannot find her after that until 1920 when she is staying with her sister Martha J. (Chauncey Thompson) Watson in Englewood, Arapahoe, Colorado. Her surname is Thompson here. Any help is appreciated.

Murl Schmaljohann married to John McKinley Chauncey

My grandmother was Murl Schmaljohann and she was married to John McKinley Chauncey. I can find quite a family tree on the Schmaljohann's but nothing on my grandfather. I know he had two brothers but I'm not sure of their names.

My mother Leah was I believe the youngest of 4 girls. Margaret, Iola, Opal Ann, and Leah. Murl remarried a man named Tex Wells (I don't think that's his given name). They had a boy named Frank - I met my grandmother once but she was great. She worked the carnivals with my Uncle Frank.

I would love to share any information I have on my grandmother and maybe be able to get some info about my grandfather.
I,m not 100% sure which I'm looking for. A member of the family made the connection, but alot of names and etc we know are not quite right. So I'm basically started at beginning trying to trace family. Right now I'm concentrating more on Harrington line because we have very little info. Thank you for anything you might have to help me out.
