I've heard this as well with regard to my family. I'm a descendent of Tom Chavis from Cameron, SC (Calhoun County). Although, I've heard about the Cuban ancestry, I'm not so certain that they were Cuban but rather Beaver Creek Indian. My research shows that the Chavis surname is very prominent in the Beaver Creek Tribe that originated in the Orangeburg-Calhoun, SC area and that they were a multi-racial tribe (European and African-American). More research and info to come...

Hi,

I am an African-American descendent of Tom and Martha Haigler-
Chavis (my g-grparents)from Orangeburg-Calhoun County, SC. My grandmother, Mary Alice Chavis-Hickson is the only living child of Tom and Martha and still lives in Orangeburg. 2 years ago, we had our first Chavis family reunion. The reunion was small because we are unsure of where all of our relatives are. As part of the reunion, we did a homestead tour during which my grandmother took us to the place in Calhoun County, SC where she lived and was raised as a child. It is my understanding that my g-grandfather Tom Chavis could pass for a white man and that he was a very shrewd business man and owned a lot of land in Orangeburg County. Because of the dialect his name was pronounced Shavis, but spelled Chavis. From this pronunciation was derived Shivers and Chavez of whom I am also related, but not sure how.

He was brother to Frederick, James, MAtthew, Elizabeth and Sarah. We think his father was John. Perhpas John had brothers that connect to your line. Would love to trade information.
Hi!
I had a great grand-father named Archie Chavis and he was married to Elizabeth ( Lizzie ) English Chavis.
I have been unable to find Archie's father or mother, (she was a Locklear, I believe), on any of the census logs, although I know we are from the tribe around the Robeson County, North Carolina, and Marlboro county, in South Carolina. I was adopted as a child, but was told of my heritage. I always made sure to be true to my native blood, and learned as much as I could. When I had my DNA test completed, it showed 68% Native American, and then caucasian, and I want even more to find the rest of my
family line. If anyone has information on Archie Chavis, please help.
Thank you very much!!

I don't have a Laurano Chavis at all. I have been working on this for a few years but have no experience. The Chavis side has been really hard. Annie was my dads grandmother, so I started out with info from him and his cousin. Her husband was "Add" Chavis, William Addway Chavis. I could only find a few records on him. He was born in 1878 and died in 1953 in Chathum County GA. After several years of "nothing", I found in a little hospital book from my dads birth, where my grandmother had filled out a short family tree. It said Adds parents were Franklin and Lizzie. That is as far as I have gotten. I have found a few that may have been related but nothing concrete, like Joseph and Mary Jane Chavis. I wish I could help more. I would love to see your info sometime. Thanks Amy

Hello,

This thread is about six years old, but if you are still interested, there is a great deal of information on Anderson Chavis's father John, a Presbyterian minister and school teacher. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Anderson. Chavis is one of the most interesting figures of the early republic. The Wikipedia article is an introduction: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Chavis

Hello Miss Chavis,Im Stacy I cant say we're related cause I dont know for sure, but I found your message interesting since you claim you're indian.See I went to ancestry.com and saw 2 surnames next to my grandpa Thomas and his brother(my great uncle) they were Chavis and Maloney, another thing is Indian blood runs in my grandpa's family(I dont know what kind of Indian) but Ive been working on finding info on my full blooded Thomas ancestors and trying to find out how the Chavis and Maloney families were related to my grandpa &great uncle. U can email me back at stacy.thomas81@yahoo.com
