Re: Maria Cheeney born New York, married John Taylor 1850s

I don't know if they ever lived in Waukesha or that area. The spelling of the name was on my grandfather's death certificate giving Maria Cheeney as his mother. It was filled out by my grandmother and perhaps she had the spelling wrong. As far as I know they married in New York ( John came from England) and then moved to Winnebago County and then to Brown County and farmed near DePere. I did have an Uncle John Taylor who lived in Milwaukee b. about 1899-1901. It is such a common name it has been hard to trace. I do know from census records that Maria was born in NY about 1834. I don't know anything else about her. Thanks for the tip. I can check out the possible Waukesha connection.

Would you happen to have a Maria Cheeney in your tree? I have only the info from my grandfather's death certificate which states that his mother's maiden name was Maria Cheeney. She was supposed to have been born in New York ( I don't know which county) and she married a John Taylor in th 1850's. I do not have any more info on her and I am not sure if the spelling of her name was correct on the certificate. I have not been able to find this surname any where. She would have been born around 1834. Thanks for any info you can give me.

I took a whole roll of film on family grave stones. I found another sibling of Sarah's. His name is William. I do not recall if I found or if I took a picture of William's grave marker or not. If I did, I will send you any information that you may need.

Thank you so much for the lead. I went down to Ottawa area last weekend, and I stopped off in Elgin at the Elgin United Churh. What a treasure trove of information. I found Sarah Cheney and John Topping's grave stones. There were many Toppings and Cheney's. On her grave stone, it said that she was born in 1939, but I had information from another descendant and they had information that stated she was born in 1936. I also had information that said Lydia's maiden name was Hubbard. I am not sure if Lydia is buried in Elgin also. I found a grave marker next to George Cheaney, but all I could make out was the name Lydia. I would like to get in contact with the gentleman from B.C. for additional information.
